Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource!!.......2003-08-01
Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.
Essential Resource.......2002-02-18
This is a terrific and necessary resource for anyone involved with the design or renovation of a child care setting. The author has clearly and concisely poured into the book her considerable knowledge and understanding of child care facilities, her passionate beliefs, and her attention to the details of good design. Her knowledge of child development is evident in all of her ideas.
The best.......2002-01-05
This must be the best book that exist about designing Child Care Center. It covers everything, but the most important is the focus the autor made on the children. This book is a must for every architect or people interested in design of this kind of buildings, specially if he/she is really interested in children well being.
The only but is that for the quality of its content, this book deserves a better paper and color pictures. (a 0 star here for MacGrow-Hill).
Probably this book is call to change the way a day care is seen today.
Long awaited, exceeds expectations.......2000-12-25
Preeminent authority on design for child care, Anita Rui Olds consummated a lifetime of deep concern and research into the needs of children with the publication of this magnum opus. Lavish use of illustrations--photos, sketches, floor plans, and examples--and attractive layout support Ms. Olds's incisive text to create a remarkably accessible book. Many hundreds of child care professionals and architects who have studied under Ms. Olds will recognize and welcome this work as the summation of the concepts that placed the author at the forefront of her field.
More and more children are in institutional care and, "in search of a model," day care typically happens in society's "leftover" spaces, church basements, warehouses, and places intended for adults. This book will help anyone committed to doing better for our children to "see that young children are raised in nurturing, spirited settings that honor their precious young souls." (from the introduction)
The book's only drawback is technical as the reproduction of photographs is of disappointing quality.
Tragically, Anita Olds did not live to see this book published. We can be thankful that she left it for us, full of her passion for children. In its use we will honor her spirit as we effect her designs.

Customer Reviews:
Not much for creative ideas. I returned my book..........2005-09-15
I was hoping to receive a book full of creative ideas for my daughter's room. What I ended up with was a book full of blah rooms. It just didn't seem like a book that is meant to give ideas by showing actual rooms. The pictures that were shown were only of one side of the room. There is A LOT of writing--not something I look for in a decorating book! There were very few decorative painting techniques or theme rooms. Most of the pictures are of frilly, wallpapered, rooms with canopy beds. Many of the pictures featured rooms with built-ins (bookcases, or beds, or window seats). The majority of bedrooms I have ever seen do not have any of these items. The author seems to go on tangents for much of the book--sections such as "designing family spaces" where they tell you how to layout a kitchen, or "Outdoor play areas" where they tell you about swing sets...
Nice colorful rooms....good ideas.......2005-09-13
This book has nice color in rooms and will give you some good ideas whether you use paint or wallpaper.
A very special and "user friendly" how-to guide.......2003-04-14
Kids' Rooms: A Hands-On Decorating Guide by interior design expert Anna Kasabian is a very special and "user friendly" how-to guide for creating wonderful rooms crafted especially to meet the needs of children. Filled from cover to cover with a wealth of tips, tricks, techniques, and enhanced with full-color photographs of delightful, inspirational, and friendly room designs and colors for young people, Kids' Rooms provides practical inspirations for home owners and apartment dwellers, from creating safe and fun play areas for children of all ages, to soothing bedrooms for boys or girls, to babyproofing for an infant's safety. Kids' Rooms is an especially enjoyable and very highly recommended instructional guide for parents wanting to cherish ambiance, practicality, and originality in the decor of their children's rooms.
A decorating "must-have".......2001-09-27
If you have children and are considering redecorating their rooms, you MUST HAVE this book! The details and suggestions are wonderful. There are even lots of helpful hints and project ideas which are practical and easy to do. I have rarely found so many unique ideas on decorating children'ts room all in one place. Especially appealing is the use of "real" children using their thoughts, ideas and actual rooms. A book well-worth referring to over and over again!
Search no further..........2001-06-08
Anna Kasabian has done it again! Her latest book will appeal to all pocketbooks and tastes. She offers a unique array of ideas from accents to basic furnishings in a concise, easy to follow style. The book is a wealth of creativity, practical and beautiful, to boot. The photographs are wonderful. The book even contains drawings by children of their dream rooms, which are both poignant and illuminating. Grandparents, this is the book you've been looking for. You can't go wrong. Best of it's sort.

Book Description
The invaluable handbook for all drawing students takes a practical problem-and-solution approach to a range of popular subjects, showing common mistakes and how to overcome them.
The book is divided into 12 themed sections to help teach specific areas of interest. Each section contains three to four spreads showing the common mistakes beginners can often make. Typical errors are shown on the left-hand page with annotations by the author highlighting what the problem areas are. On the right-hand page, Friend shows how a better, more realistic depiction can be achieved, looking at each component and providing comments for guidance.
After the problem-and-solution pages, the author shows how the drawing techniques covered can be combined to produce a complete picture which integrates all the lessons learned. The information throughout is presented clearly with plenty of useful annotations. The handy size also allows readers to take it wherever their sketching leads them.
Trudy Friend is an accomplished artist and teacher who teaches specialized courses in all mediums. She has also written for The Artist and Artists & Illustrators magazines.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent drawing course.......2003-10-20
This is the most helpful book on drawing techniques in pencil, there are so many books showing spectacular drawings without actually any hint how one can develop and reach that professional level. This book gives hundreds of very practical advises and helps to establish your own style.
Anyone who wants to improve drawing skills and make the process of learning more systematic and enjoyable do not hesitate, just get the Trudy Friend's book, and start practicing under experienced artist instructions!
An Excellent Reference.......2003-05-11
This book is worth the price if only for the author's wonderfully expressive drawings - and her detailed "before and after" solutions cover a broad range of the pitfalls that a beginning artist faces in learning to draw landscapes, forest scenes, still life, people and animals. The style is direct and readable, and Ms. Friend's drawings (I found the cat on page 109 irresistible) provide numerous examples of how much can be expressed using nothing but pencil and paper.
FINALLY....A BOOK ON LEARNING TO DRAW!.......2001-08-08
AFTER PURCHASING THIS BOOK ..., AND WAITING IN EARNEST FOR IT TO ARRIVE I WAS MORE THAN PLEASANTLY SUPRISED AT THE CONTENT FOUND WITHIN. THIS BOOK IS THE REAL DEAL...! TRUDY DOES AN AMAZING JOB DISPLAYING HER TECHINIQUES TO BOTH THE NOVICE AND THE EXPERIENCED ARTIST, REGARDLESS OF WHICH CATEGORY YOU HAPPEN TO BE IN.....EACH CHAPTER EXHIBITS A "DO" AND "DONT" FORMAT FOR EACH OF THE DRAWING THEMES, SUCH AS PORTRAITS (MY FAVORITE!), LANDSCAPES, ANIMALS, ETC. ON THE LEFT PAGE IS PORTRAYED THE "DONTS", WHAT NOT TO DO , AND ON THE RIGHT SIDE, THE CORRECTED METHOD, THE "DO"S IF YOU WILL.....BY ANALYZING THE LEFT PAGE YOU CAN THEN TRAVERSE ACROSS TO THE RIGHT PAGE AND SEE HOW THE TWO TECHNIQUES DIFFER, AND HOW TO IMPROVE YOURSELF..AGAIN,FINALLY A BOOK ON HOW TO DRAW!
Book Description
An iron-gray slate on a cold and blustery day, a respite from the summer heat, the engine of the city's notorious blizzards: Lake Michigan is an integral part of the landscape of Chicago. Bob Thall has been photographing the skyline and streets of Chicago for over thirty years, and here in At City's Edge he chronicles the twenty-five-mile shoreline where the asphalt meets the inland sea. Thall's stark yet rich images take viewers from the Evanston border on the North Shore down to 100th Street on the South Side, documenting the natural scenery, architectural structures, and people that populate the coastline. From the lakefront parks to summer beaches to the Air and Water Show, Chicago enfolds Lake Michigan into its urban character, but Thall's images make clear that the lake remains a dynamic and powerful force, with nature and civilization clashing at its rim. At City's Edge brings the lakefront to life in all its complexity, chronicling in its elegant visual sequence the sand-covered city beaches, the rock-studded shoreline, the running paths, and the buildings built along this unique intersection. Thall writes, "Since the age of five or six, I've spent much of my life at the beach, not only in the summer, but throughout the year. I can't imagine my life in this city without Lake Michigan nearby." At City's Edge redefines the shores of Lake Michigan as a vital element in the urban landscape of Chicago and reveals the complex forces that shape the lakefront as one of Chicago's most public communal spaces.

Book Description
Country school teacher, birth control pioneer, socialist journalist, freedom fighter, writer--Agnes Smedley (1892-1950) was on the battlefront of American politics, the Indian struggle for independence, and the Chinese Communist revolution. In this coherent, intelligible, and engaging book, the MacKinnons offer us a superb portrayal of one of the most significant female political figures in recent American history.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive biography that will stand the test of time........1999-09-29
The Mackinnons have done a great service in writing this book about a great American, as shown by their interviews which started on June 10, 1974 and ended on July 25, 1985. They also covered the world, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Calcutta, Zurich and in all parts of the U.S. Their knowledge and fluency in Chinese contributed to their research in ways that other biographers will have difficult in overcoming. Their devotion and sacrifice to their subject is amply demonstrated.
It seems to this reviewer that two themes came together in Agnes Smedly's life and in the interests of the biographers, the feminist movement and China's attaining its status on the world political stage. Unfortunately during the time that it took to gather the material and write the book, both of the movements have changed substantially and the people interested in them have moved to other concepts and ideas. Another cross lays over the book- is it to be an academic treatise or a popular biography? The academic treatise seems to have won out and in large sections become a rote laying out of dates, times and movements.
Not coming from the academic world, I have to assume that in order to have a proper foundation and references, this is the way it has to be done. Unfortunately, Smedly does not come to life. I had no feeling of the person involved. The parts that have fire and verve are those quotations from Smedley's own writings. Nothing is presented that contradicts her own analysis of herself and her point of view, whether from her novelized form, her personal correspondence or her other writings. I got the feeling that more of her own writings would have given a better picture than what was written.
The book is well worth reading, but its greatest value may be in bringing together the material about Smedly in an organized form and its whereabouts for either the MacKinnons or others to write the biography that will bring her to life.
(The MacKinnons were the principle organizers of the US/China Peoples Friendship Association of Phoenix in 1975).
This review was written on August 15, 1988 by Frank Kadish. Jan MacKinnon died on Sunday, September 26, 1999 in Phoenix, Arizona.
