Get ready to hang out! This unique anthology of poems takes you to the hot and not-so-hot spots of American nightlife, and what a night out it is! The collection showcases 125 notable contemporary poets, including Raymond Carver, Galway Kinnell, Susan Mitchell, Joy Harjo, and many more. From hamburger hells to heavenly hotels, weary waitresses to blurry bar hounds, Night Out contains the dreams and nightmares of those who find themselves in a very real twilight zone.
Customer Reviews:
Gritty and Real.......1999-09-03
The title of the anthology is what initially captured my attention. Although the theme may not be typical of an anthology, the poetry is wonderful. Yet, what I loved the most about this collection is the way each poem reflects a moment whether self-reflective, angry, or lonely clearly and succinctly without any exaggerations. I definitely suggest this book to those who like poetry that is beautiful through its honesty and simplicity.
Customer Reviews:
What fun!.......2007-06-27
These are classic books that expand imagination. How could you not love them? I especially like how they encourage kids to draw without making it *too* detail oriented. (Alot can be achieved with a few simple lines!)
Every child WILL love to create and draw!.......2002-07-30
As a child who loved to draw - but was all "thumbs" in drawing - Emberley's Thumbprintbook was an amazing gift. Suddenly, I could duplicate the art in a drawing book and then go on to create my own shapes and creations. As I got older, I moved onto his other wonderful art books (such as Red, Puple, Orange, Green), but my thumbprints always remained my favorite.
This is a simple but enlivening art book for preschool and elementary school aged kids. I used it over 25 years ago and it is still a huge success with kids today. Don't miss it!
Thumbodies are the best!.......2002-07-30
This is one of the most simple and entertaining art books to be found for the younger set, or those who just love to doodle. I am fourteen, and I still enjoy pulling this book out to create thumbprint pictures with my siblings. All you need is an ink pad, some paper, and a pen to begin making the fun characters Mr. Emberley presents here, leaving the kitchen table much cleaner than it would be after finger painting. And since the pictures consist of your thumbprint and a few simple lines and dots, children can begin trying to make these as soon as they are able to grasp a pencil.
Once you get started, the possibilities are endless, both on and off of paper - we recently made a T-Shirt for a friend's new baby with our thumbprint drawings all over it and the words "Thumbody loves you!" Like in all of Ed Emberley's books, the images shown are only starting points to encourage additional creative ideas to come forth from wee Picassos everywhere. I would highly recommend this for all toddlers.
FOR ANY CHILD AFRAID OF ART............2001-08-30
For any child afraid he or she cant draw well.... just buy them this book, and watch how much pride they have in what they can accomplish. This book is very basic and shows little characters you can make with a thumbprint (or circle or blob) but dont let your "limited adult imagination" think that is just a few things... there are TONS of things you can draw!!!!!! and they are very easy. I think this is a perfect first drawing book...or for a child who is already convinced that "I cant draw" i hear kids say that and i think its so sad.... this book is really a positive thing :)
A great one for younger audiences........2000-11-28
All the Emberly books are worthwhile, and this one is definitely skewed toward the younger side of the 4-8 age group. Even younger than four will enjoy this. If they can hold a pencil and draw dots and lines, they can make drawings. In fact, younger kids might enjoy just making the thumbprints and watching you turn them into people and animals.
Older kids may grow tired of it quickly but that's okay, becuse the Green, Orange, Red and Purple Emberly books are for them!

Book Description
Deluxe, larger-format reissue of this collectible, long out-of-print book. The marriage of David LaChapelle's vivid, high-octane images with graphic artist, Tadanori Yokoo's super-saturated designs, is an astonishing showcase for the lollipop giddiness of the original. LaChapelle exaggerates the artificiality of fame and Hollywood culture in a head-on collision of color, plastic, and whimsy. His photographs challenge ideas of taste and celebrity, while taking us on a roller coaster ride through a hyper-sensationalized galaxy. L'il Kim becomes the ultimate status symbol, tattooed in the Louis Vuitton pattern. Madonna rises from pink waters as a mystical dragon princess. Pamela Anderson hatches out of an egg. The acclaimed Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century recognizes David LaChapelle's 1996 LaChapelle Land as its 101st book. LaChapelle Land is packaged and produced by Callaway Editions.

Utmost synergism of fantasy, photography and art!.......2007-01-16
After having bought David Lachapelle's "Heaven to Hell" in the Taschen bookshop in Berlin last november, I was flabbergasted by its content. Coming home I immediately surf to Amazon.com to order the other two books of this trilogy: "Lachapelle Land" and "Hotel Lachapelle". To me his work is the utmost synergism of fantasy, photography and art! For me, without doubt the most impressive and striking artbooks I bought in 2006!!

Imagination in action..........2006-03-13
How about photographing what your mind sees? That's the journey Lachapelle takes us in every picture. Lachapelle, along with a couple of other great photographers, is what I would call an acquired taste and a bi-polar one it is. Either you love it or you hate it...
Anyone interested in serious photography should have, at least as a reference, any of Lachapelle's books.
As for this one, all I have to say is that I enjoyed the journey. And what a journey it was...
Pretty Good.......2006-02-24
I bought this book after being a fan of Lachapelle for a few years- and i've already got Hotel LaChapelle. This book doesn't really compare that well to Hotel Lachapelle, but its a good book to have if u want to document his work pre 1996, and although it has some stunning photographs, i was more impressed by the (presumably bigger budget) photos in Hotel Lachapelle, so. in a nutshell; if you trying to decide between this and His second book, get the second one, but this isnt a bad book to have.
A bit different from his more recent work.......2006-01-23
I purchased this book after viewing David Lachapelle's website, and while it is certainly a decent collection of photographs, the photos lack some of the style that Lachapelle's more recent work has. If you are a fan of the work found on his website, then I would suggest Hotel Lachapelle instead of this book.

David Lachapelle Rocks!.......1999-12-07
Lachapelle is one of my favorite contemporary photographers. His use of color is outstanding. Between the excellent technical quality of his work, and the whimsical (and sometimes arousing) subject matter, there is nothing about this book that is unenjoyable! I find the fact that not one of his images was digitally created or even enhanced to be a testimony to his talent and artistic vision.
Glamour and Glitz is David's Calling..........1999-10-01
Not many photographers can put together the camp, kitsch, gloss and lustre that this man can. Even the gaudiest of pictures can envelope you mind's taste buds... Its beautiful, erotic and camp at its best!
LaChappelle Land is such eye-candy.......1999-07-21
He is so creative and each one of his works are a break from reality. LaChappelle finds beauty in the most awkward places. Each picture looks like a mini-movie.
This book is the awesomest!.......1999-06-12
I adore David LaChapelle's work! I love how he uses colors, and his interesting subjects. His photos are beautiful. Does he have a website?

Tenth-grade loner Yugi always had his head in some game - until he solved the Millennium Puzzle, an Egyptian artifact containing the spirit of a master gambler from the age of the pharoahs! Now, Yugi has become Yu-Gi-Oh - and the Shadow Games has begun!
Book Description

Another great book by Jorge Ramos. Well written, easy reading, and very informative. He tells it "like it is"...
wonderful!.......1999-11-10
Purchased this book and started reading and could not put it down. Very good and coloquial narrative style. Also read Bajo la Mascara from same author, but this is far better,Highly recommend this book.
Congratulations to the author, waiting for the next one.

Travel writing to take with you........2007-01-13
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (1/07)
Being professionally involved with the travel industry for years, I've met my share of travelers and my share of tourists. Same thing applies to travel writing - some writers are tourists, some are travelers. Thomas Swick is without a doubt a traveler. His "A Way to See the World" is subtitled "From Texas to Transylvania with a Maverick Traveler" which immediately gives you an inkling on the scope of his writing. What the title does not convey is how deeply Mr. Swick explored every place described within this marvelous book. He delves into the usual topics of history, landscape and culture; and while all of those are great reading, in my opinion he truly excels when describing the people and their everyday lives.
No matter where his travels take him, be it to Cuba on a cultural exchange, to the Croatian seaside, a carnival in Trinidad or the one in Mobile, Alabama, a dinner with cartoonists in Russia, a baseball game in Chicago, the last leg of Oregon trail or searching for Hungarians in Transylvania, Thomas Swicks discovers the people and talks to them. More importantly, he lets them talk when they so desire. And he listens real well. His explanations are brief and only added when necessary. He discovers real people everywhere he goes, even on board of a cruise ship and in a tennis tournament in Miami.
His observations are keen and detailed and he captures the spirit of each place wonderfully well. Take, for example, this brief scene during the carnival in Trinidad: "At nine the next morning - five hours after the soca stopped - eight middle-aged Germans sat eating fried eggs and tomatoes on the terrace. `Winston, what time is it?' one of them asked the manager. `Time? I don't know. It's carnival.' Then Winston went and put on some calypso."
Or this absolutely brilliant description of Americans: "Restlessness is in our genes. It shows itself in everything from our national literature - `Moby Dick,' `Huckleberry Finn,' `On the Road' - to the short life of the average address book. [...] It seems no coincidence that our largest export company is Boeing. From a historical perspective, no other country could have beaten us to the moon. If, as is said, England is people and France a civilization, the United States is an experiment in perpetual motion."
Each of his stories in "A Way to See the World" is different and every single one is wonderful reading. Take them with you on your next trip, keep them in your car for when you have to wait somewhere or devour a whole book in one sitting when you are too broke or too busy to get on the road yourself - in each and every case they will open your eyes to how life-changing, exhilarating and wonderful travel could and should be.
A first-person journey which is stimulating, fun, and never too predictable.......2005-11-08
Thomas Swick's A Way To See The World: From Texas To Transylvania With A Maverick Traveler isn't your usual travelogue of wild and woolly adventures; for Swick chooses no ordinary path for his journeys. His accounts are unconventional at the least; from attending a hobo convention in Iowa to his search for James Thurber's spirit in Columbus, OH and his entry to the forbidden Cuba on a cultural exchange program. Colorful observations of counter-culture and local color provide a first-person journey which is stimulating, fun, and never too predictable. A fine armchair adventure awaits.
Beyond travel.......2003-11-16
Tom Swick has written not just an exceptional travel book, but an exceptional book. Period. Horizon broadening, mind opening, amusing, pure pleasure.
The world's mine oyster, which I with pen will open........2003-09-27
Delightful! Thomas Swick's writing is elegant, his observations about the places I've been to are perfect, and his descriptions of places I haven't seen make me feel like I've just been there. Highly recommended.
