what the heck happened to the 70s & 80s?.......2004-12-27
while this is a very concise history of the city, with a lot of material packed into relatively few pages, I find it extremely odd that the author skips from The Summer of Love in the late 1960s all the way to the earthquake of 1989. One has to ask, what informed the author's choice to ignore twenty years of history? Did the murder of mayor George Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk by Dan White never happen? Did the gay civil rights movement and the development of The Castro neighborhood into the most visible gay community in the world not happen? This seems an irresponsible omission on the part of the author. What a shame.
Extremely good.......2003-02-16
I really can't recommend this book enough. Mr Richards is a fine writer who breathes life into San Francisco's history using an array of colouful (and often hilarious) anecdotes. I've read a number of other books on the the bay area's history and for sheer enjoyment this stands head-and-shoulders above the rest.
Solid, concise review of an amazing city's history.......2002-11-05
If you don't have an affection for San Francisco history, you should have one after reading this short book. While I would have appreciated a few more anecdotes about San Francisco in this book, I really appreciated the breadth of history it was able to convey -- and in a reasonable length. Highly recommended.
very good.......2001-01-31
This is a very well-written and entertaining history/guidebook to San Francisco. The chapter on the Barbary Coast is especially interesting, as are the anecdotes from San Francisco's early history. Far better than the bilge offered by Lonely Planet and Time Out.
Fantastic San Francisco History...........2001-01-13
This book is a hybrid between a history book and a guide book. Each chapter historically chronicles a meaningful period of time betweensignificant milestones (i.e. the goldrush of 1849 or the earthquake of 1906). Following each chapter is a guide to monuments, landmarks, and musuems that have items pertaining to the preceding information.
There is a fair amount of illustrations and photographs and the writing style of Rand Richards is very readable. I highly recommend this book to anybody living in or planning to visit the San Francisco bay area.

Advice from a young creator
Even though this book is about game characters, it is still good for basic manga designs. I would definately recommend this book for those who have a little trouble with the concept of character design and personalities. It is also kid friendly! There is no nudity at all. However, I believe this book is more suited for those who are a little above beginner stage to intermediate. If this book isn't what you had in mind for character design, then try the "how to draw manga mastering bishoujo characters." It gives you a more extended list of girl characters as well as what they would wear and their hair styles. Both are good buys.
Ho-Hum.......2005-06-15
1st of all, this book isnt for begginers, so if youre starting out read something else, since you need a bit of expereince.this book was only ok, i suppose it might be of greater help to someone who is in the video game biz.I still have the same problem with this book as i had with all the other how to draw anime and game charaters books--the characters are generic.the girls seem a bit stale, cuz truly great games and anime and manga dont use these girls-- they use more original people.that isnt to say it isnt a bad book, it isnt.you will find many hints and tips.hope this helps.
This is an amazing book, very helpful..........2004-07-02
Tho its the last vol. I bought it first as well as vol. 3 (which I found was not very helpful unless you know few body poses and/or alignment of body parts when poseing... big disappointment for me -_- but I must admit it was a little hepful on things like reaching, sitting, running, and stuff like that.) when i read this book, and scaned details of characters and thier body language I found few flaws. I was amazed at how much better it was compared to other books I own. Like in the other volumes it show mistakes of begginers and does them over show the corrected areas. It also gives ideas for clothes, backrounds where to place the character in the backrounds, differnt angles, acsseories characters use, emotions, body language, poses, costumes, characters used in some manga stories/comics, and personalities of the characters. I wish I could show you a picture I drew using this book alone and how much better it was compared to earlier drawings. Also I helped my older cuz. (who confesed she couldnt draw to save her life) draw an almost perfect pic. of a character from the book. Altho I gave just a few tips Iv picked up from other not so helpful books I didnt do much of anything, the book did it for me (so to speak). I must confess that im not begginer tho im still learning and this book lacks the beggining steps such as... how to draw facial body parts like the eyes, nose, or ears and other such beggining things even tho its the last vol. its supposed to be a reveiw sorta, so that dissapionted me cause somtimes I cant get it off the top of my head and steps make it easier to remember but besides that it is all around a great book even for some adv begginers. In conclusion I give it 5, even if it lacks a small skill or two, I think Tadashi Owzawa and his book earned a 5 for everything being just about perfect. ^_^ Oh by the way you should get this book, begginer or not.
A good book.......2004-02-27
The fifth book in this series basically brings all of what you learned in the previous books together with some new features. The beginning of this book is dedicated to character types, their common facial features, clothing, etc. The bulk of this book is dedicated to clothing including school uniforms, nightwear, job uniforms, beachwear, skiwear, kung fu costumes, and many more. They also go into small details such as bags, shoes, and guns.
That said, I must say that I really didn't get as much out of this book as I did the other ones. Everything was basically explained in more detail in the previous books. This does give you nice clothes and character types, but you can also come up with that stuff on your own. It's up to you.

Selecting and Using Classic Cameras.......2001-11-27
Not as authoritative as other books on this subject, and I found too many personal assumptions that I had to disagree with. When I saw an opening page with a picture of a non-coupled rangefinder Argus model C identified as a "Argus C3", I was a bit disappointed. Also, the quality of the photos and the composition themselves is sorely lacking in a book by a fellow who obviously considers himself somewhat of an accomplished photographer. B&W photos often muddy, and poorly focused. That said, however, overall a fairly informative and entertaining read for the beginning camera collector, despite some errors.

The early '90s were busy! B.D. fails to marry Boopsie, but he does his duty another way--by getting back into uniform and heading for the Persian Gulf. Trudeau captures the monotony, boredom, and overwhelming dullness of a Desert Storm soldier's life perfectly, and it's a little disturbing to realize that we probably got more information about events in the Gulf through Doonesbury than we did through the rest of the media. Always ready to turn a quick profit, both Uncle Duke and Mr. Butts head to Kuwait. Duke opens Club Scud, while Butts hands out cigarettes to the brave boys on the front. If Iraqi chemicals don't kill them, American ones will!
Back in the U.S., it's election time, and after a brief romance with a crazed Texas billionaire, the American people elect Bill Clinton. How will the Doonesbury gang react to a president from their own generation? One mark of great satire is that it continues to be both funny and insightful long after the events portrayed have passed into history. This collection fits the bill perfectly. --Simon Leake

One of the best doonesburys.......2000-10-25
This was definetly one of the best doonesburys i've read (7 of them counting this one) It had a subject that I think trudea wrote about very well the gulf war and presidential elections which he always writes about well. My favorite part was the character list even though it was older It was still very useful. As the title says Portable it is very portable Its not to big and it has a heck of a lot of comics. I Think if your a trudeau fan this is definetly a book you need!

Like any journalist worth her salt, renowned news correspondent Cokie Roberts knows how to ask the tough questions. In We Are Our Mothers' Daughters, she poses what has long been a real doozy: "What is woman's place?" As you might guess, her answer is manifold, reflected by the table of contents, which reads like the Career Day schedule at a progressive girls' school: Sister, Politician, Consumer Advocate, Aunt, Soldier, First Class Mechanic, Friend, Reporter, Civil Rights Activist, Wife, Mother/Daughter, Enterpriser. Roberts makes no claims about this being groundbreaking research, or even an exacting investigation, rather, she explains that these are simply her own stories, and those of women she has come in contact with at different times and places in her life.
Having graduated from Wellesley College in 1964, Roberts explains that the women of her generation were pioneers in many ways--especially when it came to career and workplace issues: "We were the first women at almost everything we did, and most of us often had the experience of being the only woman in the room." Accordingly, many of her essays are political in nature: the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act (which included "sex" as a prohibited discrimination category by virtual accident); the work of consumer advocate Esther Peterson; and the history of women in the military. But for Roberts, it's clear that the personal is political, and many stories, while not overtly activist--her older sister's death, her circle of female friends, and her experiences as a wife, mother, and reporter--reveal the importance she places on a united community of strong women. Using clean, compelling language throughout, Roberts compiles these different stories to reveal a thread of continuity running through the fabric of women, summarizing, "We are connected throughout time and regardless of place." She ends with a message of encouragement for young women--that we need only look as far as our foremothers for inspiration. --Brangien Davis, Amazon.com Kids Editor
Book Description
In this bestselling collection of essays, renowned news correspondent Cokie Roberts examines the nature of women's roles, from mother to mechanic, sister to soldier, through the illuminating lens of her personal experience. Each essay introduces us to several of the fascinating women Roberts has encountered during the course of her reporting career; Roberts also relates moving anecdotes about the women ion her life, like her mother, former congresswoman Lindy Boggs. These intimate portraits of women become the springboard for more extensive discussions of women's issues, suck as women's positions in politics, business, motherhood, and marriage.
Sensitive, straightforward, and perceptive, We Are Our Mothers' Daughters celebrates the diversity of choices and perspectives available to women today and affirms the bond of female solidarity--a vital, powerful interconnection among all women, whatever their background.
"What is woman's place? That's been the hot question of my adult life."
Renowned news correspondent, Cokie Roberts, explores significant issues confronting women on the cusp of the new millennium, such as the balance of work and family, the diverse roles of women, and the connection and distinction between different generations of women. She addresses these critical topics through the lens of her reporting career, melding her personal experiences with the experiences of other exceptional women she has met.Sensitive, straightforward, and perceptive, We Are Our Mothers' Daughters celebrates the diversity of choices and perspectives available to the women of today, but ultimately affirms a bond of female solidarity -- a vital, powerful interconnection among all women, whatever their background. It's an important message, delivered by one of America's most respected and eloquent journalists.

Worth the time!.......2006-06-05
This book made me proud to be a woman! I learned a ton about women athletes, scientists, politicians, etc that I never knew. I also learned that even though I'm not a professional athlete, scientist or politician....we share many of the same experiences as women, wives and mothers. It's a great book and well worth the read. I recommend it for all women (and their spouses/significant others).
Women hold society together.......2005-02-19
Interesting history of women in different fields, and, importantly, shows why they don't have the same interests as men in all the same numbers.
Avows that neither gender has the desire to be the other, nor wants the other to be the same as them. Something that many of today's so-call social thinkers seem confused about. Many such thinkers seem not to want either gender to be the way they are, or not to want anyone to be an individual with their own values and choices.
Roberts demonstrates that it is the women who hold a free society together -- who make it a society, who tend to keep associations with old friends and family, while men tend to neglect these. While men and women share more than they differ psychologically, their differences are important. At their best they form a partnership, gaining more from life -- each with different, but overlaping roles.
(I've never had much use for Cokie Roberts as a political commentator, and as shown by the politicians she admires in this book, and as you would expect from government supported radio, NPR personnel are pretty much knee-jerk left wingers, favoring expanded government regulation and management of citizen's lives on all fronts. Fortunately, this is unimportant in this book.)
Beautiful work by Ms. Roberts.......2004-04-29
Beautiful work by Ms. Roberts. A treasure for all women to read and enjoy. The essays are poignant and well documented. This is a book that should live on through history and handed from one woman to another.

For all Women.......2004-04-14
This is a gentle book of celebration. Cokie Roberts is an attractive lady from a large family of achievers. She shares part of her life story with the reader and writes valuable information in the form of essays, about amazing women past and present; many of whom we have not been aware of.
I thoroughly enjoyed this easy to read book. I recommend it as encouragement to all women especially those hiding their talents.
Mostly though, it is a reassuring book in that we women are reminded to appreciate each other, ever learning, ever discovering new ways to contribute, even if our best efforts go unnoticed for a time; willing to step back or go forward as the need arises, and always share the credits.
With all due respect to the author, I find the title to be unworthy of this fine book. I am my daughter's mother; some women have no daughters, some daughters have no mother to encourage them - anyway perhaps I haven't gotten the point. Do read this book, enjoy it, and give it your own title!
A Must Read for Women in their 20's & 30's.......2003-07-18
I remember my mom telling me once that when she asked my grandfather for the money to take the college entrance exam he told her she should go to secretary school like all the other women. There was a time that women weren't allowed to seek their own destiny, be it successful stay at home moms or successful career women. I think my generation of women has forgotten about that and grown too comfortable with delegating our social and political responsibilities. I borrowed a copy of this book from a woman who is my mentor and bought a copy for my mom. But every woman my age and younger should read this so that they remember what came before us, and quite frankly as a career woman who still gets limited by my gender in the workplace, it is important to realize how far we've come and how far we still need to go. I didn't realize how good we have it, having lived on my own, bought my own cars and houses (the book talks about women not being extended lines of credit or losing lines of credit if their husbands died or divorced them --- as late as the 80s). The book has perhaps the best overall message that no matter what path you choose as a woman, what career or life choice, you have that choice now because of the women who came before us... our collective mothers. And it is our calling as daughters to make our mothers proud by not forgetting how valuable that choice is.

Excitante lectura.......2007-05-03
Gran viaje y gran libro. Apaga la tele y disfrútalo.
Rivetting! A wonderful tale of one man against the sea!.......2007-03-06
This is a true story that is more engrossing than pretty much any novel you are likely to find. After the end of the Second World War, the author's Australian wife is ten thousand miles away, and it is impossible for him to book passage from the States to Australia, what with the war just having ended and available shipping tied up for years. So he decides to do a solo sail in a small sailboat from Panama to Sydney.
Therein lies a tale of hardship, resourcefulness, courage, and (may I say it) at least one part bad judgment, as the author single-handedly crosses the better part of the Pacific Ocean in a small and primitive, but plucky sailing vessel. I am sure that I am not giving anything away when I tell you that the author stares death and starvation in the face on more than one occasion.
The author knows how to tell a good story, and I was unable to put this one down once I got past about the first chapter. I was up until 3 in the morning trying to finish it, unable to put it down or go to sleep. This is a terrific story with equal parts humor, desperation, and audaciousness.
This is a classic mariner's tale that anyone who loves boats or the ocean will want to read, own, and read repeatedly. Highly recommended.
Unbelievable read.......2006-10-11
Please get yourself comfortable, settle in and be prepared to be separated from your surroundings while you read this book from cover to cover. You will not be able to put it down. His story will transport you to a far away place and when you are done, you will have a hard time coming back! His story is just a fantastic adventure, reading it will make you feel like you are there. I was swaying to rhythm of the sea as I read. A wonderful modern day adventure story that left me very unsatisfied with my own life adventures so far. Eye opening and thrilling! Best read I've had in a long time. Highly recommended for anyone who can read, old or young.
I'm late for work!.......2005-09-03
I know there are already enough 5 star reviews, but I just finished the book and need to say, "Oh my gosh this book is great!" I allowed myself one chapter per night before lights out, and broke my own rules every time. I'd stay up so late I'd sleep in and be late for work. Now exotic imaginations are racing through my mind and heart. What a treasure. A book full of life in our time when so much entertainment celebrates destruction and degradation. This book renews the spirit and restores a sense of adventure. I'm 56 years old but feel like a 20 year old about to embark on an adventure, if only I can persuade my wife to sell all and head out to sea, after she reads the book! Oh Oh, maybe I should let her read it once we're out of sight of land.
Sea Adventure.......2005-07-28
Highly entertaining true narrative of an incomplete sailor attempting
a trans ocean voyage in a small sailboat, Some of the exploits described are difficult to believe, but this does not detract from its entertainment value. Target audience for this book is the amateur and
professional sailor who can best critique this story.

Too academic.......2007-09-22
This book dissapointed me in so far as I thought it was too academically written. It failed to capture my imagination.
Thank you, Mr. Leslie........2007-08-14
I have often wanted to write a thank you note to Mr. Leslie for this wonderful book. It is a touchstone for me. I re-read it once in a while to remind myself of the strength of the human spirit, the determination of character and the resourcefulness of our species. It also gives you something to think about when you think YOU are having problems! I appreciate that Mr. Leslie never assigns any of the successful survivals to the intervention of a devine being. To the contrary, scoundrals seem to fair better at the survival game than those who believe they have somewhere better to go. Certainly a keen interest in your own best interests and a refusal to give up on yourself is a factor in most of these stories. In short, this book is a guide book on survival for anyone who is mortal. Add to all this the fact that Mr. Leslie is a very talented writer and researcher, and you have a book that is a great read and refreshing to your soul. Thanks, Mr. Leslie.
Fascinating and well-written.......2007-02-18
This is a gripping account of how castaways and survivors struggle with nature and, sometimes, man. It is a huge book and I agree that the author could have eliminated the last section of the book. Actually, he should have written two books, one of them on the detailed survival of people like Alexander Selkirk and Herman Melville and the other book a short one on modern survivalists.
This is because the last section of the book is a different format than the first much larger section. On the last section, the author provides only brief synopsis of events and facts and most of them are WWII related nature-related survivals. I would have suggested that he expand one of two of the stories and save the others for another book.
However, what I enjoyed most about this book is the author's writing. He often used a turn of phrase that was unique, humorous and subtle. Don't get me wrong - the book is not humorous but the author has inserted a comment or phrase periodically that summed up someone's plight or segued into their next calamity. I found it very enjoyable and would mark the pages because I enjoyed that writing so much.
I enjoy this genre and know that well written books in this genre are a rarity so I gave this book 5 stars. Whether you like this genre or not, you will enjoy this book!
unforgettable and gripping!.......2005-10-26
this is one of the few books i've read that i can't get out of my mind. i keep thinking about the different stories. i lend it out far too often! you don't have to read it all at once; it's a great book to dip into.
Good book, readable and amazing.......2005-09-20
A very good book. The author writes in a way that holds your attention from the begining to end. Almost to the end, because he loses rhythm in the last chapter. But this does not reduce its value.
If you like knowing about how people behave under extreme situations, this is the book.

desperate voyage.......2001-11-01
Desperate Voyage takes the reader on a wonderful journey of discovery. This true life adventure takes place at the close of World War II and details the trials and tribulations of the author in his attempt to return to his wife in Austrailia. When he finds there is no transportation available, John decides to sail a small yacht the 8000 miles to Austrailia from Panama. Never mind that he has never sailed a boat before! His challenges are many and John learns many things the hard way. This book, which is hilarious at times and sad at times, keeps the reader always longing to turn the page and see what happens next.
