An exceptionally well written account of the building, builders, and custodians of a magnificent piece of history. Would that this sense of stewardship were more widespread.

Enjoy.

                Book Description

Thomas William Coke, the Norfolk landlord, was a legend in his own lifetime as a man dedicated to progressive reforms in agriculture and to the improvement of the conditions of his tenants. His Holkham estate was set up as a fine example to be followed by farmers and landlords alike. This book deals with the work of both Thomas William Coke and his son, their agents and their tenants at Holkham through the nineteenth century and into the early years of the twentieth. It shows how far even the most dynamic landlord needed a progressive tenantry and how far the tenantry relied on the landlord for the provision of good farm buildings and other capital expenditure. The building work of the estate in the erection of both farms and cottages is studied in detail. The aim of the book is to show life and work on the Holkham estate both from the landlord’s point of view and from that of the tenant farmer and cottager. Because the estate was among the richest in England and was by far the largest in Norfolk, it cannot be seen as typical of estate life in nineteenth-century England, but it does give us a picture of the best, and show the standards that were being aimed at by many lesser, but improving estates.

4 out of 5 stars All designs need to be enlarged.......2001-04-16

The only reason I gave this book a 4 is all designs need to be enlarged, and there are no pictures of the finished designs.

Below is a portion of the publisher's note within the book, that will give you some good information.

"Bevels and glass jewels add sparkling points of interest to any stained glass project. This book includes 83 floral, geometric, bird, butterfly, fish, Art Nouveau and Victorian style patterns that have been specially designed to highlight the faceted and shaped glass pieces that appear within them. The patterns appear in square, rectangular, circular, octagonal and free-form shapes and can be used for lightcatchers, door and window panels, box tops and glass projects. Bevels and jewels are no more difficult to incorporate into a pattern than regular stained glass sections."

Later in this same section they go on further about the contents of the book.

"The illustrations on pages 4-7 show the true size (and in some cases two views) of all the bevels and jewels that appear within the patterns on pages 8-64. The patterns, however, appear within the book at half their actual size and will need to be xeroxed at a 200% enlargement in order for the bevels and jewels to fit. The measurements that are printed next to each pattern give the dimensions to which it will be enlarged when doubled in size."

My impressions of the book, as I just received it are positive. There are some pretty nice designs inside from the tradition looking door insert types to some pretty intricate bird, fish and flower designs. None except for the cover are shown as a picture, all are sketches and drawings. Inside both covers are drawings with suggested colors of 11 of the designs within, but the rest only have the patterns in black and white. All patterns have other patterns on the back side.

                    Some details are:

8 butterfly designs (some with flowers)

                    3 birds

                    3 fish

7 flowers (distinctly flowers and not stylized geometric renditions)

The bulk of the book, is stylized flower or geometric designs. Really neat looking ones. This is not surprising as the bevels and jewels are limited to specific geometric shapes.

All in all a decent book.

3 out of 5 stars New York City captured in Still Life.......2001-02-27

Ricky Powll is most recognizable for his journalistic photography. He has worked mostly in taking photos of famous rappers, this work can be found in his other book "Oh Snap". The photography style shown here is Powell's attempt to show the city and people of New York in the eighties. Powell worked as a bike messenger and nightclub busboy in the eighties. The material presentes in this book is mostly photos taken of people as Powell bumps into them in his travels through New York City. There are no glamorous shots, or composed photos with zoom ins, but art at random. Powell found a bunch of people back in the day. You may recognize the people on the cover of the book, rapper Method Man, artists Basquiat and Andy Warhol, and actor Lawrence Fishburn. There are many pictures of everyday people too. Each picture has a caption of how, and where, it was taken. Powell states in the intro that his home town "feels like a theme park now", this is his attempt to capture how it was back in the day.

Worst is a gang-related title that deals with teenage boys fighting their way through high school in order to gain respect. There is no room for deceit and underhanded tricks at the notorious High School "Suzuran." These young men follow a strict honor code when it comes to brawling very reminiscent of the mafia in the early days. This series is what is traditionally called a "Yankee Manga" ("Yankee" having a different meaning and pronunciation than in English), which typically involves delinquent young men and thugs like "Han Tsukishima," who is making his way threw the ranks to rule over the rest at school.

Just finished this book and found it insightful, well written and extremely useful. Kupfer is that rare gem... a historian who can really write. This book is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful history from an even more insightful academic.......2007-02-13

I had the pleasure of studying underneath Charles Kupfer at Penn State Harrisburg and the next best thing to sitting down with him in a classroom is picking up this book. Dr. Kupfer is a thorough researcher and a skilled writer with the training of a journalist and a historian rolled into one. WWII history is a favorite of mine and I particularly enjoyed learning about this under-reported aspect to the war. I may be biased, but I would recommend this book to the casual reader of history and the serious scholar alike. An evening spent with Charles Kupfer, be it in written form or in a class is an evening well spent.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, well written book.......2003-11-20

Charles Kupfer, clearly a wordsmith of the top rank, has written a fantastic book about how the news media covered the enormously important events of World War II. Through clear and enjoyable writing, the author helps one understand what it would have felt like to be a member of the American public during this time. I found this book to be a wonderful discourse on a largely under-discussed aspect of World War II. While reading the book, I couldn¡¦t help ponder about the differences between today¡¦s media and that of yesteryear. The power of the press was never more important than during that time, as Dr. Kupfer clearly shows how the news media played a crucial forming public sentiment. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the media and/or World War 2 as it provides one a startling fresh take on well known historic events. I greatly look forward to reading other books by Charles Kupfer.

                          Book Description

What could possibly impel a relatively privileged twenty-four-year-old American—serving in the U.S. Army in Germany in 1952—to swim across the Danube River to what was then referred to as the Soviet Zone? How are we to understand his decision to forsake the land of his birth and build a new life in the still young German Democratic Republic? These are the questions at the core of this memoir by Victor Grossman, who was born Stephen Wechsler but changed his name after defecting to the GDR.

A child of the Depression, Grossman witnessed firsthand the dislocations wrought by the collapse of the U.S. economy during the 1930s. Widespread unemployment and poverty, CIO sit-down strikes, and the fight to save Republican Spain from fascism—all made an indelible impression as he grew up in an environment that nurtured a commitment to left-wing causes. He continued his involvement with communist activities as a student at Harvard in the late 1940s and after graduation, when he took jobs in two factories in Buffalo, New York, and tried to organize their workers.

Fleeing McCarthyite America and potential prosecution, Grossman worked in the GDR with other Western defectors and eventually became, as he notes, the "only person in the world to attend Harvard and Karl Marx universities." Later, he was able to establish himself as a freelance journalist, lecturer, and author. Traveling throughout East Germany, he evaluated the failures as well as the successes of the GDR's "socialist experiment." He also recorded his experiences, observations, and judgments of life in East Berlin after reunification, which failed to bring about the post-Communist paradise so many had expected.

Written with humor as well as candor, "Crossing the River" provides a rare look at the Cold War from the other side of the ideological divide.

Mark Solomon, a distinguished historian of the American left, provides a historical afterword that places Grossman's experiences in a larger Cold War context.

4 out of 5 stars A Unique Account of an Escape To The GDR.......2005-03-06

Between the end of World War II and the erection of the Berlin Wall, millions of eastern Germans escaped to what was, or would become, West Germany. There was a lot less traffic in the other direction. This is the story of one man who fled the West and wound up "behind the Iron Curtain" in East Germany. American-born Victor Grossman (né Stephen Wechsler) was literally a card-carrying Communist until he was drafted into the US Army -- a fact he did not disclose on a form asking whether he had ever belonged to any subversive organizations. In 1952, as an American soldier stationed in West Germany, Grossman received a letter requiring him to answer charges that he had lied under oath. Instead, Grossman went to then-occupied Austria and swam across the Danube into the Soviet zone. After being detained by Soviet intelligence, Grossman was given a new life and identity in the "German Democratic Republic."

Grossman was, is and remains a true believer in Communism. Grossman tells us that he got a thrill when he saw his first Soviet soldier, with the red star on his hat. Grossman justifies the building of the Berlin Wall and minimizes the wrongs of the Stasi, who except for dissidents were "unpleasant but less frightening than now portrayed." The book is written from a Communist perspective, which again and again minimizes the wrongs of the GDR and magnifies the wrongs of the United States. Yet, Grossman's argument that German communism did not necessarily preclude democracy collapses upon closer examination. A big problem for the GDR is that it had to live cheek by jowl with a free-market economy. If, as Grossman claims, the Berlin Wall was necessary to prevent GDR-educated professionals from fleeing and GDR-subsidized goods from being sold in West Germany at higher prices, then the GDR would have to remain a closed state to function. And that meant that GDR residents would not have the ultimate freedom to "vote with their feet" and leave. Grossman voluntarily chose to live under communism -- other East Germans did not have that choice. Their "revolution," such as it was, was imposed by the Soviet Union.

Nonetheless, even someone like me, whose political views are 180 degrees opposite from Grossman's, found the book engaging. One reason is that Grossman's story is so unusual. Very few American servicemen fled to East Germany and fewer probably met or interacted with as wide a range of people, including foreign celebrities like Jane Fonda. Additionally, there are very few memoirs written by Communists who came of age in the 1940s: most are written by those from the "popular front" era of the 1930s or the New Left of the 1960s. This book takes the reader to factory life in Buffalo, concerts by Paul Robeson and Pete Seeger, and all over the GDR. And the book is well-written: Grossman makes the most persuasive case possible for the benefits of his adopted country.

My personal opinion is this: As an American, I'm frankly glad that Victor Grossman left the country. Anyone who dislikes the American system as much as he does, and goes AWOL from the US Army to East Germany at the height of the Cold War, should live elsewhere. As a reader, however, I'm glad to have been able to read his book. While the author's views are (in my opinion) wrongheaded, the book never fails to be fascinating.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent and objective read.......2003-12-11

This is an excellent and unique work. It will not bore you in the least bit. Grossman presents a very human and objective picture of life in the first German socialist state. This is a very informative and interesting account and should be read not only by those interested in the GDR, but also by those interested in history in general, and those who enjoy a fascinating story. This work paints a very different picture of the GDR than the usual Western "totalitarian nightmare" type books. Highly reccomended.

                          4 out of 5 stars Fills a historical void.......2003-08-31

This engrossing autobiography relates, first hand, what happened post WWII with the diehard leftists in the eastern blocs when their dreams of socialism came crushing down around them .

The author fled his native USA while in the army and swam the Danube to seek a better world.

An honest insight that has not previously been told.
