Book Description

It was the American Dream by Mail Order —Smithsonian Americans have ordered from Sears, Roebuck just about everything they have needed for their homes for 100 years—but from 1908 to 1940, some 100,000 people also purchased their houses from this mail-order wizard. Sears ready-to-assemble houses were ordered by mail and shipped by rail wherever a boxcar or two could pull in to unload the meticulously precut lumber and all the materials needed to build an exceptionally sturdy and well-designed house. From Philadelphia, Pa., to Coldwater, Kans., and Cowley, Wyo., Sears put its guarantee on quality bungalows, colonials and Cape Cods, all with the latest modern conveniences—such as indoor plumbing. Houses by Mail tells the story of these precut houses and provides for the first time an incomparable guide to identifying Sears houses across the country. Arranged for easy identification in 15 sections by roof type, the book features nearly 450 house models with more than 800 illustrations, including drawings of the houses and floor plans. Because the Sears houses were built to last, thousands remain today to be discovered and restored. Houses by Mail shows how to return them to their original charm while it documents a highly successful business enterprise that embodied the spirit and domestic design of its time. "After decades of obscurity, Sears houses have become chic." —Wall Street Journal "These were … spacious, solidly built homes." —Parade "Don't be surprised if your own cozy bungalow turns up [in the book]."—Philadelphia Inquirer "A nostalgic and informative look at the tastes of Americans in the years before World War II."—Publishers Weekly "The bible to researchers of Sears' ready-cut homes."—Saturday Evening Post

5 out of 5 stars This is the Bible of the Sears Homes Enthusiast!!.......2006-01-19

I have had this book since it first came out and am now on my fourth copy of it as I have totally abused the others in my search for Sears Homes and while doing research for my book. This book is a valuable source of information and no true Sears Home Lover should be without it. This is the first book ever written about Sears Homes and it is still the one I turn to when I have a question. The author and I have been in many of the same interviews and videos but have never met, I have to rectify this. Let's meet Katherine!!!

3 out of 5 stars I expected a little more..........2005-09-17

This book is a great collection of designs and illustrations but what disappointed me most was that some houses did not have floor plans at all while some only had a downstairs and no upstairs floor plan illustrated. I was especially disappointed about those without any floorplans since I have seen floorplans elsewhere on the internet on various archive lists, the same goes for interior illustrations which I really expected to be many more of. I hoped it would be a 'Bible' or ultimate reference book to Sears homes but I guess I need to complement it with my own internet research.
I am not sure if I would recommend it to somebody who has high expectations and such a great love for these old homes like me.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Information.......2003-07-14

I found Houses by Mail to be very helpful and informative.

2 out of 5 stars size matters!.......2003-03-08

This book probably provides useful information for persons otherwise unfamiliar with this genre of house and architecture, but personally I found two things about it particularly annoying: first, its small size. Many plans are reduced to the point where they might just as well be heavy line diagrams, and second, I find direct reproduction of original text to be far preferable to the uniform re-typing found here. Original text tends to be just as legible and lets the reader know with no uncertainty what is, in fact, original text. In all fairness, I have to say that since I am an architect and very familiar with house plans in general, my review may not apply to all readers. I much prefer the direct reproductions, and without a doubt favor a larger format.

4 out of 5 stars Wanted a bit more.......2002-02-11

I was happy to see all the different style and enjoyed all the photos. BUT I really wanted to see the house size and the floor plans they were so small you could not really make out what size the rooms were. I wanted to see the sq. footage of each home. I also would have like to see what each floor plan size was. So if each page had been the floor plan so you could read it I would have enjoyed it more. What was hard is all the info was there just so small could not make out what numbers were.I think all the info in the book was good I guess I just wanted a little bit more out of it.

        Book Description

John Payne Collier (1789–1883), one of the most controversial figures in the history of literary scholarship, pursued a double career. A prolific and highly influential writer on the drama, poetry, and popular prose of Shakespeare’s age, Collier was at the same time the promulgator of a great body of forgeries and false evidence, seriously affecting the text and biography of Shakespeare and many others. This monumental two-volume work for the first time addresses the whole of Collier’s activity, systematically sorting out his genuine achievements from his impostures.

Arthur and Janet Freeman reassess the scholar-forger’s long life, milieu, and relations with a large circle of associates and rivals while presenting a chronological bibliography of his extensive publications, all fully annotated with regard to their creditability. The authors also survey the broader history of literary forgery in Great Britain and consider why so talented a man not only yielded to its temptations but also persisted in it throughout his life.

Arthur Freeman and Janet Ing Freeman are widely published independent scholars living in London.

          Book Description

Beyond Winning: Memoir of a Women's Soccer Coach profiles the birth of a small-college program in women's soccer. It also explores the rewards and tensions of the program's first season while commenting on important issues in small-college sports and especially women's sports.

          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Unfocused and unmoving.......2001-05-21

Dr. Hanna seems to be an interesting and amusing man. It seems he did a good job coaching his team. The memoir has some charm, and is presented with an air of rueful humor. It touches on a broad variety of topics, including (but certainly not limited to) the proper role of a coach and athletics in an academic environment, tension between men's and women's athletic programs, the dynamics of a team with a broad range of talent and experience, some details of the games played in their season, and a lot of light-hearted conversation among intelligent people.

Ultimately, however, it is an unsatisfying read. The author is a professor of English, so I had expected some provocative insights; however, none of the topics were covered in depth or with much creativity. I am left with no new insights into any of these provocative topics, and frankly the conversations and reflections aren't interesting enough to carry the book. This is particularly frustrating because I sensed an excellent work lurking under this treatment. There is some tantalyzing discussion of team dynamics; we are presented with a strongly polarized team in the beginning of the season, and a clearly united team by the end, but given no insight into how the union was forged. Ultimately, a book entitled "Beyond Winning" has to be about people, and the most interesting people in the book -- his team -- are rarely named and for the most part ignored.

I felt as if the book seeks to be everything to everyone, and so fails to be anything to anyone. It's not clear to me who would enjoy this book. Prospective soccer coaches will learn nothing about soccer. Sports fans will learn nothing about athletics. It's not funny enough to read for humor, not charming enough to read for joy, and most damning, no one will learn much about human nature.

          3 out of 5 stars Indeed a good read........1999-10-27

Let me quote an early assessment by the author himself. It is classic. To wit: "This book deals with an unknown author writing about a little-known college having a losing season in a minor sport played by women." I need add only that it is, indeed, a good read.

          4 out of 5 stars from a student's POV.......1998-03-18

Being a student of Dr. Hanna at Geneva College, I can say that he truly puts himself out onto the pages of this work. I am in a class which discusses the book, and Hanna is the same person in the classroom as anywhere else. Always ready to show something new, and smile the whole way through it. Beyond Winning tells a true account of a baseball coach and English professor who gets a job as a women's soccer coach in a small school and has a losing season. What exactly would make anyone want to read that? That question is exactly what made me pick the course and begin reading Hanna's work. See for yourself.

Sport Success Series: The Human Drama of Women's Athletic Competition

In the past several months the thrill of women's soccer, the storybook tale of the Williams sisters in tennis, the continuing success of the WNBA, the increasing popularity of women's ice hockey and the birth of women's football have made women's sports the number one sports story of 1999.

With so many children playing soccer and being more interested than ever in many different sports, a new series from Barron's, for children 10 years old and up will offer valuable insight to budding athletes and be entertaining reading. Winning Women in Soccer and Winning Women in Ice Hockey explore in-depth the dynamic world of women's soccer and ice hockey for young readers.

Uncovering the origins of women's soccer and tracing the evolution of the popularity of the sport in the U.S., Winning Women In Soccer details the personal stories of the sports rising stars and the exhilaration of championship and Olympic women's soccer competition.

More than a mere history, the book serves as a practical guide on how to play the game and the unique challenges of women's soccer. Of particular interest to women's soccer fans, are the in depth profiles of such women soccer stars as April Heinrichs, Michelle Akers, Briana Scurry and Kristine Lilly.

In addition to a detailed glossary and index, the book includes:
              - Soccer connections
              - Where to find more information
              - A further reading list
              - Bibliography
              - List of related web sites

Both books explore the drive, determination and talent behind the athletes that have propelled women's sports into the forefront of competitive athletics. Along with serving as a practical guide and handy reference source, each book tells one of the most compelling stories in sports today.
