Book Description
This beautiful book is a resource for those who want to create a contemplative garden or to better understand what it is to follow a contemplative path. It will be of interest to landscape architects and designers, anyone interested in the fusion of East and West in cultural expression, and garden lovers everywhere. It explores the innovative approach to garden and landscape design found in the work of Martin Mosoko, a landscape architect and Zen teacher working in the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado. Mosoko's work incorporates principles of Oriental and Western garden design to make bold and original statements in his landscapes. Mosoko explains how to deploy the materials of the garden so that their arrangement reflects the contemplative mind. The chief paradigm he uses is the mandala, a symbolic picture of the ideal world used in some form in many of the world's cultures. Rocks, streams, plants, paths, and structures of the garden each take their place in the mandala as one of its five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. The means to produce a balance of these elements is the mind conditioned by meditation and a clear understanding of its own nature. Inner harmony is expressed as outer beauty. Mosoko's approach to landscaping transforms space into spirit, infused with magic. It can be used to create anything from a small courtyard to a country estate, in any environment from the city to the suburbs. After explaining theory and method the book leads us into five of Mosko's gardens, each alive with the energy and excitement he brings to his designs. Although located in different parts of the country and created in different styles, each garden is a reflection of the mind of clarity and calm.

Extraordinary insights.......2004-10-18
This book is remarkable in at least three regards. First, it is so finely produced that we, as readers, can actually feel our way into the gardens it is showing us. Second, the principles of garden-making it offers us are profound, simple and flexible: we can see how the Mosko gardens emerge from them, and how our own might too. Third, and most unusual, it is deeply spiritual, coming from years of meditative practice in the Zen and Tibetan tradtions, as well as in unnamed native traditions of spirit. In the deepest sense this book is beauty as instruction.
landscape as spirit: creating the contemplative garden.......2004-10-15
this book's title, if the picture of the cover is real, is different from the Amazon title. who proof's this stuff?
Beautiful, Inspiring - a great gift.......2004-04-29
This gorgeously made and printed book will inspire ANY gardener or person who enjoys gardens. The photos take you into a world of amazing gardens. I'm not a garden nut, but I love a beautiful book and this one is on my coffee table. The writing is clear, creative, and very informative. This book is an excellent gift to anyone who loves architecture, design, or landscapes.
Landscape as Spirit.......2003-12-27
In this time of shortening days when everything but us hurry up humans is sensibly quieting down, what a pleasure and a treasure to sit down in a comfy armchair and open this book. Turning the pages is stepping into a contemplative garden and wandering the paths. Letting the colors and shapes and scents and sounds take you in. A beauty feast - massaging your worried mind, snatching speedy thought, soothing your bustling spirit.
And when, a timeless while later, you close the book and stand up in your feet again, you are changed.
Restored, refreshed and more in love with life.
How does a book do all this?
I don't know.
That is part of the delightful mystery and what I love about it.
Clearly, these two authors have been having a good time. Working hard, paying attention in their own lives to what it is that creates harmony and balance. Playing with rock, water, plants, and light. Listening deeply to the voices that seem to encourage us to stop arguing with reality and relax back into our natural sanity. Now, with gorgeous photographs and wise words, they are sharing with us what they've discovered along the way.
I suggest "reading" Landscape as Spirit once through just for the images. Turning the pages slowly and letting the gardens enter and speak. Then, a second time, for the words - inspirational and practical, for the professional gardener and layperson alike.
Thank you to Mosko and Norden for what you have given birth to and your generosity of spirit in offering it out into the world.
A spiritual and visual delight.......2003-11-28
Mosko is a Zen teacher and Landscape Architect and this book seeks to explain his philosophy by showing and describing how the teachings and practice of both disciplines relate to each other and with the external world.
Most people when they think of Zen and gardens can only think of the immaculate stone and gravel gardens of Japan. Mosko shows that the true understanding of the basic principles of harmony and balance leads to the creation of gardens that delight the eye and the soul.
Taking each element of the garden individually, Mosko explains the spiritual balance between the opposites and the harmony of that balance which, when translated successfully into a real garden, results in an immediate sense of 'rightness' when the garden is experienced. This 'rightness' is beautifully captured by Noden's photographs. The testament to Mosko's brilliance is that the gardens are 'right' for a spectrum of clients not just 'right' for Mosko. The superficial disparity between The Adobe and Flowers in Space lessens the closer you look and you can see the underlying principles of harmony and balance are exactly the same for both.
The beauty of this book for me is that I have found it wildly instructive and inspirational despite having little or no knowledge or understanding of 'Eastern' religion. I found that certain phrases and design concepts would arise in my mind long after I had read the book, infusing me with a desire to express those thoughts in my work.
This book is a must for anyone considering a contemplative garden and a very worthy reference for anyone wanting to design a garden of any sort.
Book Description
If it's Purple, Someone's Gonna Die is a must-read book for all film students, film professionals, and others interested in filmmaking. This enlightening book guides filmmakers toward making the right color selections for their films, and helps movie buffs understand why they feel the way they do while watching movies that incorporate certain colors.
Guided by her twenty-five years of research on the effects of color on behavior, Bellantoni has grouped more than 60 films under the spheres of influence of six major colors, each of which triggers very specific emotional states. For example, the author explains that films with a dominant red influence have themes and characters that are powerful, lusty, defiant, anxious, angry, or romantic and discusses specific films as examples. She explores each film, describing how, why, and where a color influences emotions, both in the characters on screen and in the audience. Each color section begins with an illustrated Home Page that includes examples, anecdotes, and tips for using or avoiding that particular color.
Conversations with the author's colleagues-- including award-winning production designers Henry Bumstead (Unforgiven) and Wynn Thomas (Malcolm X) and renowned cinematographers Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption) and Edward Lachman (Far From Heaven)--reveal how color is often used to communicate what is not said.
Bellantoni uses her research and experience to demonstrate how powerful color can be and to increase readers awareness of the colors around us and how they make us feel, act, and react.
*Learn how your choice of color can influence an audience's moods, attitudes, reactions, and interpretations of your movie's plot
*See your favorite films in a new light as the author points out important uses of color, both instinctive and intentional

Relevant and enlightening for film buffs and filmmakers alike, this unique book is already generating buzz among top Hollywood filmmakers. Color can be an incredibly powerful tool for filmmakers, yet many don't know how to maximize the effect it has on audiences: it can influence how audiences feel, act, and react and be used to further plot, character, and scene development. If it's Purple is based on Patti Bellantoni's groundbreaking color seminar at the American Film Institute, in which she teaches how to stop analyzing and thinking about color and start feeling it instead. Full-color film stills and gorgeous illustrations make this book as appealing to look at as it is to read. Conversations with the author's colleagues--including award-winning filmmakers Henry Bumstead (Unforgiven), Wynn Thomas (Malcolm X), Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption), and Edward Lachman (Far From Heaven)--reveal how color can be used to communicate what is

A great introduction to color's role in storytelling.......2007-09-19
This book is definitely on the beginners side of the spectrum. (no pun intended) You're not going to learn to be a production designer just from reading it, but it's a great start to becoming more aware of the use of color in film (or comics, video games or any other visual media) to influence underlying mood of the story. And once you're aware of color's presence, you can start making educated choices on how to use color in your own work.
Although a few more pictures would've been nice, the author does a good job of taking each of the six primary & secondary colors and defining its role in general and then giving numerous specific examples of the different visual and emotional tones each color can take.
If nothing else, this book added about 8 movies to my Netflix queue.
The Importance of Color.......2007-08-06
Unlike most books on the psychology of color, this one focuses on film and relies heavily on the author's personal experience teaching the subject. Useful for film students--and others.
Interesting but I don't buy all of the conclusions.......2007-06-08
This book is very thought provoking. Some of the theory is similar to other books on color and its importance and psychological, physiological impact, but keeping it completely grounded in the "sexy" world of feature films makes the book very readable and interesting.
My biggest issue is that many of the author's personal opinions are delivered as facts. Color is just not that black and white if you'll pardon the joke. If you can read it and be prepared - and well-schooled in color theory - to ignore or disagree with some of the author's conclusions, then you will like this book a lot.
Her research seems to have been pretty self-guided and ignores a pretty wide body of work. I also would have liked to have seen more interviews with the actual people who made the movies about which she makes certain assertions. In some cases, I'd think the film makers would disagree with her "facts" regarding their movies. In other cases, her insight into the color schemes are very interesting and thought provoking and some of them ARE based on the actual artists involved in the making of the films.
Basically, it IS an interesting book. There is really nothing else like it, but you need to take it with a grain of salt. Many of the other reviewers here are actually referenced IN the book, so you need to take THAT with a grain of salt as well.
At the same time, I bought "The Visual Story: Seeing the Structure of FIlm, TV and Media." It has a chapter or two devoted to color that seem much more grounded in "fact." But for a whole book on color in film, this is the one. ... and it's got a great title.

reasonably interesting ramblings on colour in film.......2005-10-06
Bellantoni's book is interesting, a nice light read on colour in film. It is nothing in comparsion to Bruce Block's 'The Visual Story' which explains colour, whereas this book is just a series of examples. It's both the author's interpretation and she's interviewed a number of DOP's etc of note. I'm not trying to say this book is of no value (it has good interviews, great colour stills and covers a lot of films), but I feel a more accurate review is required on this book given the other reviews are clearly written by Bellantoni's New York and LA friends. The back of the book says please review this book online, which indicates the publishers know the value of these reviews, and therefore seek to send out a few themselves.
color me satisfied........2005-10-03
Every now and then you come across a book that is both a revelation and a pleasure from cover to cover. "If It's Purple..." is just such a read. I'm a film editor and color plays such an important role in how I try to juxtapose imagery. Ms. Bellantoni illumuinates the use of color in some of my favorite films and has given me the joy of seeing some of them in a fresh and altogether revealing way. The book is an insightful exploration of familiar and lesser known works and how they use color as a remarkable tool to achieve their emotional and psychological wallop. It's a fascinating journey.
Book Description
Visual media artists-comic book artists, film and video storyboarders and animators, and creators of interactive games-must express purely with pictures everything that the writer can't communicate in words. As a result, truly effective visual storytelling must be compelling, dynamic-and have the appearance of reality. In Visual Storytelling, veteran comic book publisher Tony Caputo demonstrates everything the aspiring visual media artist needs to know in order to master sequential art. In Part 1, artists will discover, through clear illustrations and pictures, each stage of the production process, including plotting, writing, penciling and lettering, inking, coloring, and painting. Part 2 shows, step by step, the basics of figure drawing and anatomy, and basic light and dark techniques. Finally, Part 3 details the basics of page composition, layout, and design as well as the art of creating incredible comic book covers and splash pages. Filled with fascinating illustrations by such legendary artists as Mat Nastos, Jim Steranko, Neal Adams, Wally Wood, Andrew Loomis, Scott McCloud, Terry Moore and Jeff Smith, Visual Storytelling also features a ready-to-use guide that helps chart progress and skills in visual storytelling media.

great reference book for comic book artists or graphic novel artists.......2007-05-22
A fine book that will help anyone who wants to produce a graphic novel or comic book.
Advertising dressed as information.......2007-03-21
I was eagerly anticipating the information from this book, having studied the narrative artform for the past 3 years and having read through the Mcloud, Eisner, Janson and various books on film.
I couldnt believe how little actual information is in this book, it jumps from here to there with no flow and it's lack of content hidden in examples obviously from the works of those adding to the book.
Don't waste your time, buy Both Will Eisners Books on storytelling then Scott Mclouds books, leave this boring jumble of arse on the shelf.
misleading.......2004-06-18
This book is unfortunately very misleading in its content - Aimed as a multi format guide, the book rarely strays away from comic book technique.
For filmmakers/animators, this book offers little beyond rudimentary film theory and skills. Plus the majority of the example material is very sub-standard. Avoid this one.
Good read but doesn't keep its promise.......2004-01-12
There is no doubt this book is good value for money. What basically lets it down is its illustrations - much of the text is explained by illustrations and some significant examples are so poorly reproduced or so small that the meaning is lost.
On the whole, with a few exceptions, I found it skirting around the topics offering little depth.
The books gave a good general coverage and pointed out the areas to follow up with further reading/viewing.
This said, I still would recommend this book for anyone interested in the techniques of visual storytelling.
Don't pass this one up!!.......2003-09-19
This book belongs in the library of anyone who is or would like to be a storyteller whether it be comics, animation, film or any multimedia field. This is one of those rare books that doesn't get published enough. The fact that it covers more than one medium makes this an invaluable reference title. Besides, how often do you find a book that tells you how Steranko does it?
Book Description
Listen up, buddy. Here’s how it’s going to be, see? You’re going to draw noir comics. And you know what else? You’re going to draw them like a pro, see? Like Shawn Martinbrough draws them, see? Martinbrough--he’s the master. He walks you around the mean streets of shadowy high-contrast images, stark camera angles, chiaruscuro lighting, everything you need to create a somber, moody tone and a conflicted, angry antihero. He takes you through the dark alleys of layout, thumbnails, creating mood, staging action, and working with actual scripts. More? You need more? Why you dirty little....look, there’s a fourteen-page original story, written and illustrated by Martinbrough. You want him to draw you a map? He’s drawn it, punk.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for intro courses in animation.......2001-11-07
This book is excellent in giving the reader the "big picture" of foundational knowledge needed to learn technical animation. I strongly suggest using this book in introductory courses that teach technical-based animation, looking at techniques, not creativity.
3D Newbie Likes It.......2000-02-09
I'm entirely new to 3D modeling and animation. I found this book to be exceptionally well written. The author provides a clear and concise explanation of the principles of 3D computer graphics, with easy-to-understand examples throughout. As stated in other reviews, it is not software specific. If you are looking for an introductory but thorough 3D primer, I recommend this book without reservation. It should provide a solid foundation for those who have little or no prior computer graphics experience.
Outstanding classroom text!.......2000-01-05
As an instructor in 3D computer animation I find this book to be an excellent text for the classroom. O'Rourke knows his stuff and presents the material in a well-thought out, logical format. The only negative is that it's time for a new release.
Excellent Overview, But Go Elsewhere For Details.......1999-11-22
I agree with prior reviews that this book is well written and provides an excellent introduction to 3D computer graphics. If you're new to the field and want to learn about the general terminology and techniques of 3D computer graphics then this would be a top choice. Just don't expect, however, that after finishing you'll be ready to plunge into creating your own rendering engine or even be up to speed on using an existing engine. If you're looking for technical detail, then you'll have to look elsewhere.
well written, but sparsely illustrated.......1999-10-06
While Mr. O'Rourke's book does a very good job of explaining in depth the terminology of 3d computer graphics, the book is very sparse in illustrations that display how the concepts translate into final rendered imagery. With the exception of the middle of the book, which has glossy reproductions from actual computer generated 3d scenes, the book looks and feels like a high school algebra textbook.

Delightful and gentle real life account.......2006-05-09
A wonderfully written book about Nicholas Gatzoyiannis , and his four sisters making a life for themselves in the USA, with the father they have never met , Christos. This after the brutal murder of their mother by vicious Communist terrorists.
It is a journey of discovery , of America in the 1950's , 60's and 70's and about Nick's growth and reconciliation with his father. It covers his near descent into being a petty teenaged hood , and his rise to being an award winning journalist and author.
It also focuses on Nick's sisters and their marriages.
Lots of colour and humour in a delightful and gentle real life account.
Love never fails.......2002-04-23
If you've read "Eleni," Nicholas Gage's previous book on the life and death of his mother, the extraordinary Eleni Gatzoyiannis, you've probably wondered what happened to her children after they came to America. "A Place For Us" tells the story, with its focus on the relationship between a young Nicola and his father, Christos, a man suffering deep guilt for having left his wife to suffer in Greece.
The story is wonderful--a bit leisurely, but full of wonder and suspicion as the Gatzoyiannis girls (and boy) encounter America with all its strangeness and potential. There's enough humor to counter the grief and anger the family carried over the loss of Eleni, but it's Gage's account of his mistrust and resentment of his father that is the focus of this story. Long before Gage can seek justice for his mother's killing, he has to forgive his father, who turns out to be a better man than his son expects.
If this story is gentler in tone and pace than "Eleni"--albeit just as well-written, and spare in its language--it is because this is a story of healing rather than revenge. This is Christos's story rather than Nicholas's; the son's grief found a release in the search for those responsible for his mother's death, while the father devoted his life to the care of their children. Through that devotion, the Gatzoyiannis children came to thrive in their new country, finding purpose and strength.
In the end Christos and Eleni are reunited--their graves are side by side, and the epitaph speaks simply of the lifelong love between the two. A lesson for the family is made a lesson for all of us.
Wonderful Biography.......2002-03-01
This is a wonderful, moving story of immigrant children who came to join their father in America after their mother was murdered by fellow Greeks during the Greek Civil War. It tells of their struggles to assimilate into American culture while attempting to deal with the betrayal they feel over the loss of their mother and the instant family they have with the long-absentee father. It's anything but slow moving and is a rich portrait of the life of an extraordinary family.
A personal/detailed bit of history.......2000-01-09
This book is an excellent reach into personal experiences of a family that saw tragedy face-to-face. Great details and descriptions. Rather slow but worth your time. I read every word.
Greek Immigrant Family Story.......1998-04-01
"A Place for Us" is the successor to the best-seller "Eleni". If you haven't read Eleni, read that first; it is by far the better of the two, though both are fascinating true accounts about a Greek family and its journey through war, immigration, and assimilation. Nicholas Gage was the son of a Greek woman who was executed for protecting her children during the Greek civil war. Her story is told in "Eleni". "A Place for Us" is the story of her children who come to live with their father in America. It's a fascinating story of rich culture, hardship, and forgiveness.
