4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-08-04

This book offers beautiful examples of skies and clouds rendered in watercolor. It is worth keeping on the coffee-table just to look at and enjoy. In addition, it provides useful instruction, showing some of the techniques used to make some of the paintings. As indicated in the title, the techniques relate almost exclusively to watercolor, though the paintings themselves will inspire painters who use other media. This is a fine book.

Book Description

·Instruction on composing the shot and editing it digitally, keyed to outdoor subjects and outdoor conditions
·Selecting equipment for use in the field
·Illustrated in full color

A professional writer and photographer who has long chronicled his adventures as a mountaineer and wilderness traveler, James Martin is uniquely positioned to help others "gain the most from swapping chemicals for silicon." In Digital Photography Outdoors, he begins with the basics: how a digital camera works, special considerations for use in the field, and selecting the best equipment and most useful accessories for capturing outdoor action.

Martin presents the new rules of digital photography (why overexpose?) and reminds us of old rules that still apply (light and good composition remain key). He covers the fundamentals of digital editing, including selecting software tools, applying filters, creating the illusion of movement, and stitching photos together to create panoramas. It's about exploiting the advantages of digital, as well as meeting its challenges ("storing images safely becomes an obsession.") Martin also offers tips on care and maintenance of digital equipment in field conditions.

Very interesting book with several useful tips. It is focused in the "digital darkroom" processes and it becomes an interesting handbook while working with image processing software. Moreover, it gives some advices on photographic techniques specially oriented to digital cameras and their particular performance.

4 out of 5 stars Remember -- It is a Field Guide.......2007-07-23

As a novice photographer I found this book useful. There are better, more complete books available. But it is important to remember that this is a field guide -- a book you can take along with you and use as a quick reference, something to inspire ideas and turn snap shots into something better. Personally, I have learned a lot from it, yet it is not the last book I will read on photography. If you are considering picking up a copy of it, I think it is worth it if you plan on reading it during a vacation or while away from home.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2003-07-16

I am a keen amateur photographer on a steep learning curve and a tight budget. I spend a lot of time in bookshop cafes reading (for free!) any book about photographic technique that I can find. I am becoming quite technically proficient but I also happen to be an outdoor enthusiast who loves white water kayaking, mountain biking and nature photography. Therefore, I no longer want to learn about how to photograph animals in zoos (although I'm sure I can practice there!), nor do I really care about studio flash photography. I spied 'Photography Outdoors 2nd edition' yesterday and, after a quick flick through, I didn't think twice about spending AU$32. I haven't put this book down since, this is my type of photography and illustrates my type of subjects. The text is clearly written (point taken about mis-printed ISO rating p.83) and focuses on developing the readers creative potential using sound technique rather than rote learning about how to photograph particular subjects. More importantly, it is A5 format and thus is clearly meant to be carried and used!! I have no doubt that this book will become tatty and well loved (like my camera) and will reside permanently inside my pack, pannier or pelicase.

Note: This book is definately written for someone with a sound understanding of photographic principles wanting to pursue outdoor and adventure photography, rather than for beginners. Beginners wanting to photograph outdoor and adventure activities should therefore read this book in combination with Michael Langford's 35mm Handbook (like I did). You can't go wrong then.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative book!.......2003-04-29

Photography Outdoors is a must-read for any serious photographer. I read the book from cover to cover and it was easily as pleasent to read as a best-selling novel. Art and Mark present the subject matter in a way that keeps you constantly interested. Their writing is as good as thier photography.

I learned that lenses have a "sweet spot" aperture for producing the sharpest image.

I learned why my snow always looks gray, and why black objects always come out too light.

I learned more about working with my images after digitzing them.

There's too much to list here. I learned a little more about every topic they covered than I knew before reading the book. This book opens up a whole new world of techniques for you to experiment with.

There are tips and tricks inserted throughout the book. Many I transcribed into my PDA, others I scanned and printed to keep in my camera bag.

Buy it. You'll like it.

3 out of 5 stars It's All in There!.......2003-04-28

At first glance this looks like an ideal book for someone who is moving from the point-and-shoot stage of photography to something beyond snapshots. Everything most people want to know about photography from the relationships of f-stops, shutter speed and film speed all the way to underwater photography is in this book. Unfortunately the book throws the information at you so quickly and with so little discussion and few examples of applications that you may miss some very important concepts and confuse others.

It would be nice to think that a person could improve his or her photography without a lot of effort, but that just isn't so. It's not enough to have a new rule thrown at you. Most people need photography principles to be explained, usually in several different ways, with plenty of examples. You'd expect lots of pictures to be used to illustrate points. After all, this is about photography. But that is not the approach taken by this book. The principles are stated, and later in the book, restated, but not illustrated well.

It's really a shame, because this book is small enough to carry with you in case you want to check on something in the field. Art Wolfe, whose pictures appear throughout the book, is one of the great outdoor photographers (Gardner's pictures also appear to a lesser extent, but they aren't in the same league as Wolfe's.). Unfortunately the pictures aren't tied to the teaching points very strongly. That's a shame because stronger ties to Wolfe's pictures could really teach one about outdoor photography.

The book gives a nod to incorporating digital photography, but only in the most rudimentary fashion. For example, I consider an understanding of "white balance" to be essential for a serious digital photographer, but this book just barely acknowledges that there is such a thing.

There are several mistakes in this book. A chart on page 83 suggesting exposure guidelines for low-light photography captions a column ISO 50 (film speed) when it means ISO 400. Follow these guidelines and your picture will be hopelessly underexposed.

The author discusses pushing film. This process involves setting your camera as if the film you are using is more sensitive than it really is and then asking your lab to develop the film in a way that will make it that sensitive. The author says that pushed film is less grainy then film with a higher rating shot and developed normally. It's not true. If it were, all we'd ever need is one speed of film.

If I absolutely needed a guide that would fit in my pocket in the field I'd consider this book. Otherwise I'd buy a book like John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide. It's physically bigger, but will be more effective in improving your outdoor photography.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book for any skill level.......2001-09-25

I love this book because it is written right at the best level for everyone to enjoy and get something out of. I read and practiced on my Canon AE-1, and shared things with a friend who began taking better pictures on his "point and shoot" camera. Terrific book, great photo examples....

    Book Description

Inspired by Gulliver's Travels and set in the legendary days of the first flying machines in the 19th century, Castle in the Sky features evil pirates, power-mad secret agents, and Sheeta, a young girl wearing a mysterious blue stone around her neck. The stone lets Sheeta defy gravity — and float down into the life of Pazu, a tough young orphan boy. Imaginative settings, dramatic air battles, and memorable characters distinguish this classic Miyazaki adventure. In Volume I, Sheeta and her new friend Pazu must uncover the legendary secrets linking Sheeta's stone to the dangers and mysteries of Laputa, the Castle in the Sky.

    5 out of 5 stars love it.......2006-02-25

eh...I wanted to give 4 1/2 stars but you can't do that on amazon. I like Castle in the sky, a lot. I muchly prefered it over other Miyazaki movies. Of course not as popular as oh say, Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away (both just as wonderful). The mangas are very good, the movie was also very good. Kids enjoy it. Adults (like my mother) enjoy it. Miyazaki is so brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars A girl falls from the sky and the great adventure begins.......2005-05-04

Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli is the most beloved animator in Japan and when his film "Spirited Away" won the 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, there were plenty of people on this side of the Pacific who were interested in seeing his earlier films, which included "Princess Mononoke," "Kiki's Delivery Service," "My Neighbor Totoro," and "Castle in the Sky." The last is retold in a four-part series of graphic novels that are printed and intended to be read in the original Japanese right-to-left format (although you can get in a couple of dozen pages starting from the "front" before you are clearly on the wrong track).

"Castle in the Sky" ("Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta") is the story of Sheeta, a young girl who wears a mysterious blue crystal around her neck that allows her to defy gravity, and Pazu, a young orphan and apprentice miner who is pretty inventive. They meet when pirates after a treasure and government secret agents hungry for power start chasing Sheeta and Pazu saves her when she falls out of an airship (he catches her when she floats down out of the sky). Muska has been assigned by the Special Agency to obtain the levitation stone while Dola is the captain of the pirate's airship. The stone has been in Sheeta's family forever and there is clearly a secret connection between it and the mythical Laputa, a floating city built by a lost race of people. This is probably my least favorite Miyazaki film, but is still well worth watching, or, in this case reading.

For those who have read what photo-novels of movies are like before, you are not really going to be prepared for what they will find in this graphic novel (it really is more like a comic book). Whether you have seen "Castle in the Sky" or not you will find this an interesting story and there is even a cliffhanger at the end of volume 1 to inspire you to move on to the next part. When you make the mistake of opening to the "front" of the book look over the guide to "Castle in the Sky" sound effects used in the "manga" (comic book) style adaptation of the actual anime (animated movie). The sound effects are usually written in the phonetic characters called "katakana." If the instructions are too complicated do not worry because there are three pages of annotations (three column per page) translating every sound from "whoor whoor whoor" to the final "kaasboom."

    4 out of 5 stars I liked it! ^_^.......2004-09-12

with the original sound effects (at least in my version) it has a very nice storyline and the art is very nice! elegable for thke whole family to watch and read ^_^

      Book Description

The story of World War II was told first not by historians, but by reporters. And no one told that story with more impact than Edward R. Murrow and the remarkable band of reporters he assembled.

World War II on the Air recounts the dramatic stories behind these extraordinary correspondents. And it lets you hear their actual broadcasts, culled from the archives and collected here—many for the first time—on audio CD, narrated by Dan Rather.

When war broke out, there was no TV, no satellites, no Internet to spread the news. There was radio. Murrow and his fellow CBS radio correspondents reported directly to listeners as news unfolded. They invented a new kind of reporting while bringing the events of the war into America's living rooms from capitals and battlefields all over the world.

Hear the history of the war through more than 50 broadcasts, including reports from:
--a rooftop looking out over London as German bombers buzzed the skies, to…
--a clearing in a forest where Hitler was laying down the terms of France's surrender…
      --a Normandy beach on D-Day…
      --soldiers parachuting from a C-47 into Holland…
--a street battle in a crumbling German city before the Battle of the Bulge…

Experience World War II as it happened—with the reporters who lived it and the broadcasts that defined the war for a nation.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay, good but not great.......2007-09-23

I bought this as a gift for my stepdad who is interested in all things World War II, and I could tell by his reaction as he read it that it wasn't the most engrossing material he'd ever read.

      5 out of 5 stars Great history.......2003-12-28

I read the Rise and Fall on the 3rd Reich in high school, and I had always thought of Wm Shirer as a historian - I had no idea that he was a reporter during the war, and had a unique seat and understanding watching the Nazi drama unfold.

Great book. You can really appreciate the difficulty of getting a live broadcast from Europe done in 1938, and how hard Murrow and company worked at it. There was no "press freedom" then, and the deference the press is shown today didn't exist then. They were a courageous bunch, Morrow's boys. And look at the roster! Murrow and Shirer, Eric Sevareid, Howard K. Smith, Charles Collingwood, and back in New York, William Paley was calling the shots and rooting Murrow on. What a collection of talent. Amazing.

The only irritating thing about it concerns the CD - why did Rather narrate it and not Walt Cronkite? Cronkite had front line reporting experience in WWII (was on the beach at D-day and made a jump with the 101st) and ended up working for Morrow after the war. Every time I hear Rather narrate, I have the feeling he doesn't deserve to be talking.

Otherwise the radio clips are superb.

5 out of 5 stars More than 50 actual broadcasts, and an audio CD.......2003-06-19

Collaboratively compiled and written by Mark Bernstein and Alex Lubertozzi, World War II On The Air: Edward R. Murrow And The Broadcasts That Riveted A Nation presents the stories behind the implacable and courageous radio correspondents who brought the reality of war itself into living rooms across the nation for the first time in history. More than 50 actual broadcasts, and an audio CD narrated by Dan Rather, enhance this unique and very highly recommended look at World War II events and personalities as the home front experienced it through the medium of radio broadcasting.

5 out of 5 stars Edward R. Murrow Reports From WWII London.......2003-06-11

This is a unique and intriguing book which creatively captures the history of Edward R. Murrow and "Murrow's Boys." The book includes a CD containing 51 broadcasts just as they were heard live during World War II, with narration by Dan Rather. The text has symbols throughout, keying the reader to the CD track which compliments the written words with the voices of these brave men as they broadcasted from all over the world. The text includes concise profiles of the various members of Murrow's team: William Shirer (author of RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH), Eric Sevareid, Howard K. Smith, Larry LaSueur, Charles Collingwood, Winston Burdett and Richard Hottelet, among others. To those who remember WWII these names will be very familiar, and for those who do not, they tell the war's story with passion, intensity and professionalism. The authors have painstakingly researched the intricate details of how William Paley took the embryonic Columbia Broadcast System from a largely soft entertainment network to the premier news gathering and reporting organization which eclipsed all others during the war. The role Murrow plays in this evolution reveals a man of tremendous commitment to his craft, despite almost no previous experience in radio, with a great capacity for judging and selecting the others who became the critical reporters on his team. The travails of Murrow and the others as they faced death in flights over enemy territory, beach assaults and other combat assignments and suffered the tyranny of technological challenges with equipment strained to the breaking point make for great reading. The authors weave the complexities of personalities, politics, warfare and technology into a comprehensive and coherent book. The CD is haunting and chilling as these now dead voices bring back to the present momentous events which told America about the fighting of the war and the slow and painful process of winning peace just as they were happening. This book will be a superb addition to the library of any student of WWII and is also recommended for any reader who enjoys fast paced history in the making.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book! Relates to my life .......2007-02-08

This is a good book. In the story, shy Tina is a fan of soccer, especially the fact it's a team sport where she won't stand out to much, which is good, because Tina hates getting attention. When she joins a new soccer team, everything is great until her coach asks her to do something for the team...play keeper!!! That horrifies Tina. Everything about keeper, even the uniform, stands out! Can she overcome her shyness to play the best she can? This book appeals to me partly because I am rather shy, and play a lot of keeper on my team, so I stand out. However, playing keeper has helped me overcome most of my shyness and be a good player, on and off the field, just like Tina.
