ARMCHAIR TRAVELERS WILL LOVE THIS !.......2006-02-23
Marrakech, that magically mysterious place in Southern Morocco - just the sound of the name gives birth to visions of intrigue, romance, secrets. It is, perhaps, the city many of us dream of visiting. Well, if Marrakech is not included in your vacation plans this year you can enjoy an in-depth colorful tour through the pages of this beautiful volume.
Readers will find a telling description of the glories of this city: "With the coming of twilight Marrakech gives itself up to all manner of seduction, the senses discover the thrill of happiness. On the horizon it seems that all the purple in the world, in its infinite shades, has chosen the Atlas chain as its domicile...."
Thanks to the spectacular photography by Florentine artist Massimo Listri we know this to be true. His camera takes us behind the high walls and enormous cedar doors of Moroccan houses to discover magnificently decorated interiors, with a melange of colors, fabrics and lighting all reflecting the blend of cultures found in the city - Berber, French, Spanish and Arab.
One finds traditional homes called Dar as well as the magnificent palaces with interior gardens known as Riad. Some 27 residences are featured as well as twelve outside of the city. Each is unique, delightful with shaded yards, fountains and pools enhancing the lives of those who dwell on the edge of the desert. Where else would we find a pool with mother-of-pearl lining the bottom or a home in which artists have used "what might be called chiffon painting," which involves "processing the layers of plaster with a thin fabric, the only way to obtain certain faded blues and linen grays...."
Daniel Rey, author of numerous travel accounts for Conde Nast Traveller and the Louis Vuitton City Guides, divides his time between Rome and Marrakesh. His narrative is a splendid companion to Listri's photographs as he details behind the scenes life in this contemporary Eden.
If you have not already dreamed of Marrakech you surely will after browsing through this lush volume, which is surely one of the most enticing books to be found.

Book Description
The most up-to-date survey available of one of the best known and best loved forms of Islamic art.
Walter B. Denny, Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts, offers new perspectives on one of the most popular Islamic art forms. Covering both Iznik pièces de forme and the famous Iznik tiles that decorate Ottoman imperial monuments, the book integrates the entire spectrum of Iznik production, both titles and wares, with the broader artistic tradition in which it originated.
Professor Denny begins with a discussion of the particular nature of Islamic art under the Ottomans. He then examines the relationship between the court style of Istanbul and the ceramic ateliers in Iznik in nearby Bithynia, and the crucial role of two stylesdubbed by the author the "enchanted forest" and "heavenly garden" (the saz and aux quartre fleurs styles)and their creators, Shah Kulu and Kara Memi. Finally, he covers Iznik works with human or animal imagery, the patronage of non-Muslim communities within the Ottoman Empire, and the chronicle of destruction and damage of tiled monuments due to war, earthquake, and fire. The book ends with a look at the extraordinary historical legacy of Iznik ceramics, from early imitations in the Ottoman Empire and Europe to the astonishing appearance of ceramics in the Iznik style created by European studio potters in the nineteenth century.
The first study of Iznik ceramics to combine these different thematic elements, the book reflects Professor Denny's ambition, almost thirty-five years after completing his doctoral dissertation on Iznik tiles and after well over a dozen publications on the subject, to create a comprehensive overview of this beautiful and popular art form. 250 illustrations, 230 in color.

16th Century Artistry........2007-07-20
The book tells a fascinaing story, accompnied by beautifully presented colour plates of work done by skilled 16th century craftsmen. Some of the pieces and tilework can still be seen in Istanbul today.
Life-changing book.......2007-06-12
I'm not a fan of art or religion, I'm a practical sort of girl. I took a class on Islamic art though, and found myself fascinated by Ottoman ceramics. Finding this book in the library, I sat down and flipped through it, and to my surprise, found myself crying. Crying, because everything in this book was so beautiful. I've never done that before. I have to buy this book. I must own this. I've never felt so moved by anything my whole life, and I don't say that lightly. The photographs are exquisite, the details visible are finer than the unaided eye can see. The colors are beyond words. The historical context presented is well-written, interesting and exciting. I told my teacher after the class that she'd opened the door to a whole new world for me, and this book just blew that door off its hinges.

The pictures will hypnotize you.......2005-05-23
This is an excellent book, no matter how many times you go through it you are completely captivated by the pictures of the stunning mosques, mausoleums, palaces, etc. It actually makes you want to visit the whole muslim world country by country.
From Esfahan, to Cairo, From Samarkand, to Cordova - (countries included: Morrocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Syria, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Uzbekistan and Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India) obviously it can't have every country and every monument but it has the main ones and is reasonably priced.
Gorgeous!.......2005-01-20
This book is full of wonderful photos! An excellent resource book for anyone who is interested in studying the visual richness of this medium.
Good photos but poor texts.......2004-05-07
I understand that it is almost impossible to write about many different centres of Islamic tiles but at least the authors should try but not just put a lot of color pictures of the tiles and write short text about it. This books is just good title and size.

Book Description
Ceramic tiles have been produced for over a thousand years in the heartlands of the Islamic world, from Iraq in the ninth century to Turkey in the nineteenth. The wealth of designs and colors used to decorate mosques, shrines and palaces later provided inspiration for European artists and designers. This book first explains the various techniques of the craftsmen and then traces the development of tilework, beginning with pre-Islamic tradition, through the major periods and across a wide geographic area. Superb color photographs and informative text make this book a treasure for anyone interested in art and design.
Customer Reviews:
NO RESPECT FOR TURKISH ART.......2002-10-11
It is very dissapointing to see an example of an Ýznik tile (Turkish) on the cover of a book under the name "Islamic Tiles". Anyone with the least respect to art, to the very origin of that art and to the country (TURKEY) where that art has flourished should be more selective in choosing a design such symbolic of our country. Either the title or the picture on the book should be changed. Our precious inheritance deserves to be named or used correctly. If knowledge isn't sufficient, please refer to books by dear Nurhan Atasoy or Azade Akar. ART certainly deserves respect and so does nations.
Good history, but no color pictures.......1999-04-24
This is a good book if what you're looking for is the history and description of Islamic tile styles. I was, however, disappointed that all the illustrations/pictures were in black and white. Bummer. The best part of Islamic tiles, as far as I'm concerned, is the use of color! I was hoping for lots of color pictures of Islamic mosques, etc. Nope. Anyway, I guess it's good as an art history book.

The Koranic proscription against human and animal imagery turned centuries of Islamic artists and architects inward, to create unmatched examples of geometric and decorative art. This lavish, authoritative book, with gorgeous photographs by Roland and Sabrina Michaud, provides an introduction and overview to, as the subtitle disarmingly puts it, "Eight Centuries of the Tile-Maker's Art." The often-anonymous Islamic artists whose work is featured here, however, were far more than tile-makers: they were astonishing draughtsmen, dazzling colorists, hypnotically inventive creators of endlessly spiraling design. The Michauds' photographs are complemented by text from the scholar Michael Barry. The book is lent increased interest by the fact that some of the landmarks featured are now off-limits to many Westerners, especially Americans.

Sumptuous and Substantial.......2005-05-21
No doubt about it, "Design and Color" is a rare and true feast for the eyes. Better yet, it's not just pretty pictures; it is also a surprisingly informative and well-written survey of the art of tile-making in (primarily Central) Asia. I can safely call it my favorite art book.

Customer Reviews:
Awful, absolutely awful.......2005-04-23
This book is absolutely awful. It's full of ad hominem remarks and plays to the emotion of women being in prision. Why are most people (not just women) in prison there? Because they commited a crime!!! The author blames men for most of these women's crimes throughout the book - they were abused at a young age by men, they were poor . . . excuses. When will people take responsibility for their actions? The book has some beautiful photography - they should have taken the ink used for the text and put in some more pictures. Don't buy it, don't read it. I'm sorry I wasted my time.
Compassionate photos and text about women in prison.......2000-10-10
This an extraordinary book of photographs and text about women in prison. The title of the book is an apt and ambiguous description of the plight of the women prisoners she describes, for two of her major points are that they generally lead more barren lives than men within prison walls and also are often given heavier sentences than men for comparable crimes.
Jane Evelyn Atwood is a compassionate American who has spent most of her adult life in France, and has become one of the outstanding photojournalists in the world. While other talented photographers earn a lot of money taking pictures of fashion models and high society, Atwood's committed outlook has led her to depict the less-fortunate specimens of the human race. Her subjects have included blind children and Parisian prostitutes. Years ago, she was the first to photograph the terrifying physical decline of a man dying of AIDS, which broke new ground when her reportage was published in Paris Match.
In Too Much Time, the striking and poignant photos, in black and white, are reason enough to buy the book but that would be only half the story because Atwood is one of those rare photographers who can write as well as they take pictures. Indeed, when I became engrossed with the text, not only her own words but also transcriptions of what American women prisoners told her, I almost forgot that it was a picture book.
Jails on pictures.......2000-04-09
The authors visited about 40 prisons. The pictures she took are of very good quality and very expressive. She interviewed the women in jail. The stories of those prisoners are really moving. It's a moving, respectful book about the life of women in jail.

You discover facts and truth from often expensive experience.......2005-01-19
Larry Garza's book describe his risky and expensive experiences with Far East, Middle East and South East Asian cultures, religions and civilization.
Coming from Nigeria, I know and have seen what misguided fundamentalist Muslims have done in wrecking havoc to that country, especially, Northern Nigeria.
The stories and experiences of Mr. Garza accurately portray Islamic beliefs and the truth about Islam that needs to be known.
While in the USA, we have room for everyone because of democracy, freedom of religion, tolerance and inclusiveness.
However, our Government and peoples must exercise caution in not allowing Islamic fundamentalists a foothold or the introduction of Sharia Laws as in some Northern States of Nigeria.
Many of the Islamic leaders secretly like Western Civilization and freedoms, yet they continue to repress their people and disallow freedom of religion in their domains such as Northern Nigeria, Iran or Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Garza's personal experiences of several Eastern Religions, historical accounts from Islamic countries he visited decribe a transformed man with geniune Christian love for all peoples.
I highly recommend his book (The Destruction of the Veil of Islam) if you really want to know the facts about Islam and it's violent dispositions.
Revealing the truth about Islam.......2005-01-18
This truly is an incredible account of a human life. Larry Garza reports his life testimony, and tells of his travels across Asia. At the same time he dispels any misconceptions about the religion of Islam. He relies on the FACTS not on personal opinion, which lends this book credibility. Through this work, I have come into a greater understanding of the misunderstood religion. There is a reason why this book is called "The Destruction of the Veil of Islam". A truly fascinating and captivating book. Larry Garza is a hero of Democracy. I promise that you won't be disappointed if you invest in this masterpiece of historical Literature.
MUST READ FOR ALL WHO WANT OBJECTIVE TRUTH.......2005-01-09
This is truly one of the greatest writings of our time. This book is a combination of both thrilling accounts of the authors journeys into forbidden lands and eye opening truths about Islam, its history, foundational teachings from its founder Mohamed and its agenda in the world today. This is a must read, the most captivating book I have ever read.
A Wake-Up Call To All Nominal Chrisitans.......2005-01-07
I found the account told by Mr. Garza to be accurate and compelling. Anyone interested in learning more about Christianity as a 'practiced' belief and the desire of the Islamic world to resist the Christian ideal of democracy, will enjoy this front-line account.
It appears to me he is one of the true doers out there - pushing forward, using peace and love as his motivation.
I saw the author on the O'Reilly Factor January 4th and found his historical knowledge to be consistent with the context of his book.
Dont Read This.......2005-01-06
I would ask anyone who wants to know about Islam to not read this book. This guy has no idea what he's talking about. I saw him on the O'reilly Factor and he made a fool of himself. I am muslim. I know about Islam. Nothing this guy said made any sense and he had all his facts wrong. Books like this are destroying America. Instead of this book, read Inside Islam
