This is an excellent introductory overview of practical problems and solutions relating to moisture control in buildings. The diagrams are outstanding! The emphasis is on moisture problems and solutions in low-rise framed buildings. My only disappointment is that the underlying physics are not described and that predictive techniques are not presented. An excellent reference book for builders, and a must read for anyone involved with trouble shooting, inspecting, insuring, repairing, and restoring building envelopes

How odd it seems that the very first lesson in this book is to `Begin with Seeing,' yet without awareness of the world around you, how can you create a world within or without, the one in which you live?
This truly is an amazing creative book. For example, get a spray bottle out of the kitchen and study it until you see a creature emerge from the contours of the bottle. If you have trouble seeing something different, squint, or turn your head to the side, because you will be able to see a wild animal that is dangerous or a creature that is gentle, or battle raiment for your hero or villain. Something is there waiting for you to find it, much like stereographs.
This is the power of fantasy art.
The book will take you through the basics of fantasy drawing, the tools you will need and additional supplies that come in handy. You will see sketching & shading techniques known as hatching, crosshairs, contour lines, and others. Darker lines make deeper the shadows. If you want a sword gleam, keep it light while all around it is muted and darker.

This book is an excellent resource for learning how to draw all kinds of different things that would appear in a fantasy setting. It's got fantastic tips about shading, texture, and coloring. I just wish there had been a bit more information about some basics, like proportion for people like me who haven't had any formal training in how to draw.

well Shane, you kinda already know what i think about your book, but im here to tell everybody out there about how great and super helpful this book is!!!
the night i got this book, i spend 2hrs reading and studying everything cover to cover. the way its writen is easy to understand and the little tips are very handy to use. the next day, i made a few little sketches of many different creatures and humans. then i tried clading knights in a wide range armors and giving creatures much needed textures. i finally drew a small pic of a dragon and show it to my mom to ask what she thought of it. she could tell a great improvement in my art, with lines, postitions, textures, structure, etc.
i used to always draw the same thing, little cartoon characters, mostly using the same format. im starting to learn to draw different things now, letting my imagination wander further and try new things. i never use to draw multiple sketches to decide on were things should be or the position of the character. now i do and i have a better understanding of how things should look, im more organized. backgrounds werent my favorite thing to do, most of my drawings and sketches dont have them at all. slowly, more of my pictures are starting to have enviroments for the characters to be in.
this book has helped me in so many ways, im still improving on things. i use it for refernce all the time and have it next to my sketch book. its just an excellent book to have, i really really like it alot!!!

I used to draw animals and buildings years ago and decided I wanted to go back to that. And add fantasy creatures to my ability.
This books covers drawing people, creatures and buildings. If you already having some drawing skill, this book is a great help.

Magnum, a name synonymous with upper echelon of documentary photography. Just a mention of the name brings instant thoughts of Capa, Parr, and Bresson. The most recognized name in the photo world brings their take on a very photographic country: Ireland.
If you are looking for beautiful scenic and landscape shots of the Irish countryside, look elswehere. If you love reportage/documentary photography than this will instantly become a photo book favorite of yours, even if you do not have much interest in the country itself.
What lies here is Magnum's best work from the past 5 decades, breaking each into it's own section. We get some brief text to start each decade, drawing a light timeline for us, and then it's on to the pictures.
You would think the 50's would be mostly black and white shots, but think again. Along with some great shots by Henri Cartier-Bresson, we get some vibrant color images by Inge Morath. All the photos simply have one thing in common: capturing life in this country in all aspsects. Depicting people lounging, fighting, and dancing, and the objects, places, and buildings in which they dwell.
You get over 30 of Magnum's top names, including Eve Arnold, Martin Parr, Steve McCurry, and Bruce Davidson, who lend photos covering both Ireland and Northern Ireland. I didn't recognize of a few of the Parr photos, and I have nearly all his books including Photographs of the West of Ireland, so I am assuming that some of these photos may be appearing in book form for the first time.
It's a real treat for Magnum and documentary fans, and at the price I see right now on Amazon (way, way below list price) this is a must buy!

Funny and revealed and well-observed.......2000-04-10
I may be biased, since I, too, was seven in '75, but I found this collection to be quite entertaining. There are several true stories from Ms. Forney's childhood each told through a series of 1-page comics. Each one includes loads of small details from the 70s that will be familiar to most readers (from CB radios to Pop-Rocks to rainbows on everything to Judy Blume, and so on). Most of the amusement comes from the asides that the author makes while relating the stories (although they are all told from her childhood perspective) and from the pre-cynical view that most of the characters have of the world. My favorite stories are the nudist camp story and the forced book report on Judy Blume's Forever.
Ms. Forney's artwork is mostly simple and pleasing, and she does include some more detailed drawings done from photographs of her childhood.
A family album like no other.......1999-11-02
Ellen Forney's look at her childhood will make you laugh out loud as she lets you relive her (and your own!) best and worst moments... You can't ask for a better tribute to one's family than this.

The best I've read.......2002-05-13
George MacDonald's "Robert Falconer" is perhaps the best of his works that I have ever read. It deals extensively with a boy's search to know God personally while struggling with the concepts about God presented to him by his extremely strict Calvanist grandmother who raises him. It contains some of the best advice on Christian ministry that I have seen in a novel and I recommend this book highly. If you only want an entertaining book this may not be the best one since it is written in the phonetic Scottish accent, which can be difficult to understand. A few times I had to read it aloud in order to comprehend what he was saying. Still, the content is absolutely excellent, the story is entertaining (if you can get around the accent) and I am going to buy this book for my personal library when I can get some money together.
To know God is to obey God........1997-11-07
Robert Falconer should, in my opinion, be required reading for all who profess the faith of Christianity. The plot is simple and straightforward in that it does no more than recount the life and times of one man, Robert Falconer. Yet the lessons taught would be well-heeded by all who proclaim the Son of Man as Lord and Savior of their lives.
The story vividly portrays the misery, despair, confusion, hope, and all-consuming search of one small boy as he makes the arduous journey into manhood-a journey that too few seem either willing or able to make. Robert is forced to put away childish things, to submit to a stronger will and greater power than his own. He learns, not from his pious and orthodox grandmother, but from a bitter battle of endurance between God and self that the Father and Creator of all is also the greatest servant of all. He discovers that it is not through ritual and church service, not through hymns and rote prayers, but through service and obedience that one may know God truly. In order to serve God, one must serve his fellow creatures. There is no other way-"faith without works is dead."
This novel is founded upon a search-Robert's search for his Heavenly Father and his earthly father. While the plot line may not contain the action and intrigue desired of many, it is a perfectly realistic account of the battle that ensues when anyone would truly know God. It is the conflict between life and death. In my opinion, there is no greater battle to chronicle.
I invite you, nay beseech you, to walk alongside Robert Falconer as he begins a pilgrimage to Eternity. You will uncover much you may have forgotten of your own struggles, or you may find that your battle has not yet begun. If you can read this book with no pangs of conscience, no convictions of guilt, no mists of doubt, no desire to search your own heart, no compulsion to seek your Father then you are, indeed, to be commended or damned.
