4 out of 5 stars Fascinating variety of mosaic styles.......2007-01-22

This book was written by a mosaic artist and teacher who's travelled extensively and kept her eyes open (and her camera ready)while sightseeing. The breadth of her scope is very satisfying (ranging from the ancient Greek and Roman to the very, very modern, with every significant school represented). She absolutely knows the medium, and gives sound and practiced techniques for creating various types of mosaics. She also includes photographs of all kinds of different work, so the reader can be inspired by a style that speaks to him or her. My only reservation about this book comes from the fact that my taste and hers differ, so there are other books available which (in my opinion)offer a more pleasing selection of mosaics to be inspired by.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book, It's One to Buy.......2004-04-05

This book, along with "The Encyclopedia of Mosaic Techniques", is a must for you whether you are beginning mosaics or have some expertise. The background material provides enough information to give the reader an appreciation of the historical, as well as artistic, perspective on the art. The technical information is sufficient to allow the reader to further their craft. Definitely a must have!

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Mosaic Book!!.......2003-12-10

5 out of 5 stars Together at Last - Inspiration and Technical How-To.......2003-12-08

This is absolutely THE book to have on mosaics, whether you are seeking historical/geographical information, artistic inspiration, or technical know-how. I own and use just about all of the mosaic books currently available, but this is the one book on the subject that I would say is essential, whether you're a beginner or an experienced mosaicist. No skimping on the beautiful and detailed pictures (over 500, all of them luscious), and the author's friendly, inclusive tone makes it clear that mosaic art can be joyfully and successfully participated in by just about anyone who wants to play.

Creating mosaic art is an interesting field - it can be both highly technical and joyfully simple. Sonia King's book is by far the best I've encountered at bridging those two ends of the continuum; she discusses the properties of materials used (necessary to know so that your stuff will stick to your other stuff and not fall apart), the wide range of materials available now that can be utilized in successful mosaicking, and step-by-step how-to, but also makes it very clear that this is a field wide open for your own experimentation and self-expression. Maximum info, minimum rules - wahoo, what more could you want?

And beautiful! Never mind whether or not you ever intend to cement a shard of glass to backing - the wonderful photos in this book make it well worth owning for anyone that appreciates art. She covers both historic and contemporary works with well-photographed pictures and in sufficient detail that the truly obsessed can examine them essentially tile by tile. Just looking through this book is inspiring, whatever your aesthetic sense or medium of expression. It will get your creative juices flowing, and once you are inspired it will lead you through the steps to create beautiful works of your own.

Cynthie Fisher brings her passions for zoology, taxidermy, and big game and bird hunting to her book about how to paint deer, elk, moose, and other hooved animals. After a brief introduction to materials, Fisher suggests sources for study and emphasizes the need for sketching: "The number one piece of advice is sketch, sketch, sketch! If you can create a good representation of an animal through your own observation and freehand talent, there is no limit to the creativity and enjoyment you can derive from painting." An anatomy primer examines a selection of popular species and describes how hooved animals are built. The bulk of the book zeroes in on specific species: white-tailed deer; mule deer; elk; moose, caribou, sheep and antelope; and other hooved animals. Each of these chapters includes brief painting demonstrations. The final chapter illustrates how to create finished paintings in acrylic and includes two complete step-by-step demonstrations of whitetails in a forest and elk in the snow. Fisher possesses an impressive mastery of her subject, and her paintings sometimes resemble photographs in vividness of detail and natural light. From the majestic golden curves of a Marco Polo sheep's horns against a steep snow-covered mountainside to the bold stripes of zebras set amidst a shimmering yellow plain, Fisher brings the drama, nobility, and grace of hooved animals exquisitely to life. --Mary Ribeski

5 out of 5 stars Wildlife Painting.......2006-11-04

The author is extremely knowledgeable about deer and antelope. She breaks down the bone and muscle structure so that the artist may show the animals in any pose and be accurate. My wildlife paintings are more realistic now that I have intimate knowledge of the muscle structure underneath the skin and fur.

3 out of 5 stars ok book.......2005-12-23

it is ok but i only wanted to draw big game such as deer and elk that are in North America in the wild not zoos such as the zebra it is just a waste of money to me

5 out of 5 stars For any wanna-be wildlife painter.......2002-01-17

This is a great book to use for anyone interested in wildlife painting, specifically hooved animals such as deer, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, zebras, etc. Obligatory information such as surfaces, grounds, brushes, acrylic paints and gathering reference material is provided. Each animal gets its own chapter and each chapter follows a standard format. First, anatomy and how to sketch the featured animal is shown, then mini-demonstrations that show close ups of key features such as the head, neck, eyes, legs, etc.

The format of each demonstration is clean and easy to follow. There are numerous reference photos of the various animals as well as photos of the painting process. The close-ups of painting things such as fur and antlers is particularly helpful. The final chapters show step-by-step demonstrations of the environment as well as the animals and the author supplies ideas for how to compose your own original paintings from reference material. I would like to mention that although the author uses acrylic these painting techniques work just as well for other types of opaque paints. Even though I use acrylic paints myself I plan to use these techniques for some wildlife paintings using casein as well. The only painting media I use that might need other techniques than those demonstrated here are watercolor and pastels. Overall, an excellent book for any beginning wildlife painters reference shelf.

CYNTHIA HART'S SCRAPBOOK WORKSHOP: A Complete Guide to Preserving Memories in Archival, Heirloom-Quality Books (Workman Trade Paperback, $19.95, 1998)

I thought it would be nice to create a scrapbook for my son's first year at school, and so I started scouring the bookshelves for interesting scrapbooking titles. It was VERY hard to find ones that aren't hokey and super-cutsey. CYNTHIA HART'S SCRAPBOOKING WORKSHOP was one of the few books that somewhat appealed to me. You may be familiar with Cynthia Hart's Victorian art calendars. Her designs in this book are quite elaborate and definitely reflect her Victorian tastes, but the book isn't entirely Victorian-styled. There are plenty of contemporary ideas, which I actually didn't care for as much as her vintage-style page layouts.

The book is comprehensive and an excellent source for the novice "scrapbooker." She covers the basics of how to use archival materials, how to restore damaged photos and prevent photos from future deterioration, and she also offers helpful information about tracing your family tree. Then she gets into the heart of how to create a scrapbook: the basic tools needed, planning your pages, incorporating three-dimensional objects, color and design schemes, and detailed instructions for making your own album covers.

The rest of the book is devoted to lush, full-color scrapbook designs. Each design is accompanied by detailed instructions. She covers a wide variety of occasions, including baby, wedding, bar mitzvah, sweet sixteen, 50th wedding anniversary, sports, kids' artwork albums, holidays, travel, and pets. My favorites were the designs in which she worked with old photographs. The "Childhood in Collage" and the "Special Grandmother" layouts are gorgeous.

This book is extremely well thought out. It offers detailed, easy-to-follow instructions for creating a memory album. And it features a wide range of scrapbooking ideas that will inspire readers to do something creative with their shoeboxes full of old photographs.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not your usual book of layouts!.......2001-04-06

If you're buying this book for more layout ideas, you might want to look elsewhere. Yes, there are plenty of ideas but the focus here is on the entire album - not the individual pages. Cynthia Hart shows the reader how to actually craft an album - from cover to cover (literally). About 90 pages are devoted to instruction, 90 pages are devoted to designs and about 50 pages are of art and templates (which can be copied for personal use). The scrapbook designs range from the usual wedding scrapbook to a rollerblade scrapbook. There's even a horse show book made in the shape of a horse's head! Supply lists, color photos and instruction are included with each design. While I may never be as creative as Cynthia Hart, I'll view my scrapbooking from a new perspective thanks to her book!

Sure it has beautiful layouts and if you are not a newbie you might enjoy it. It is way to advanced to start out with.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring. Makes your fingers tingle with the urge to create.......1999-07-21

I have always liked scrapbooking, but this book has given my hobbie a whole new perspective. This is the first book I bought on this subject and it made me burst with creativity... I was thrilled to discover all the ideas Cynthia Hart proposes along her orderly advice and guidelines. The book is rich with pictures and examples, and going through it for the first time - without concentrating in the written material - is enough to start with. I was overwhelmed with the richness of the material. In your second reading you can go through the written guidelines.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for beginner, Beautiful presentation.......1999-02-26

I just began my scrapbook project. Cynthia Hart's book literally helped me prepare the project with advice on the tools required, the resource guide, etc. The pictures and the step-by-step instructions are beautifully presented. She gave a lot of ideas without limiting our own creativity.

Scrapbook projects aren't as intimidating anymore.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Admirably honest about himself, but with no insight!.......2007-06-25

Because I have thoroughly enjoyed Patrick Buchanan's columns criticizing President George W. Bush's war in Iraq, I decided to catch up my reading of Buchanan's books by reading _A Republic, Not an Empire_ (1999) and _Where the Right Went Wrong_ (2004). Having been favorably impressed with these two books, I turned my catch-up reading next to _Right from the Beginning_ (1988; 2nd ed. 1990). It is a remarkably well-written and remarkably honest autobiography. At times it is very funny.

As a boy and a teenager, Patrick J. Buchanan (born November 2, 1938) was a fist-fight waiting to happen. Being expelled from Georgetown for a year (1960-1961) enabled Buchanan to overcome his earlier proclivities toward fisticuffs and turn his energies instead toward verbal combat.

Buchanan does an excellent job of explaining his cultural conditioning in the 1940s and of explaining how this cultural conditioning posed great difficulties for him in the 1960s:

"Americans who had grown up in the late 1920s and early 1930s had memories of a time when the United States was denounced at home and abroad as an unjust and failed society, a country that exploited the poor and sided with the exploiters. We [who were children in the 1940s] had no such memories. The 1960s were thus more of a shock to us than to them." (p. 30)

This is a remarkable admission. Buchanan here acknowledges that he is the product of his narrow cultural conditioning in the 1940s. He also states that "[b]etween 1941 and 1945, that idea of America [as "a glorious and militarily invincible Republic"] was stamped upon us for life" (p. 30; also see pp. 139-140).

But hold on! In his epigraph to chapter 7, Buchanan quotes St. Paul as saying, "When I was a child, I thought as a child, I spake as a child, and I acted as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put off childish things" (quoted p. 175).

So when is Buchanan going to recognize that his cultural conditioning as a child in the 1940s is something that he now as a man needs to put off, rather than cling to it?

From the evidence that Buchanan himself presents in this book, it is possible to argue that his cultural conditioning in the 1940s skewed his consciousness too strongly toward brashness -- that is, toward an over-developed tendency to get angry and want to fight. When he returned to Georgetown after having been expelled, one of his teachers asked him, "Why are you so angry?" (p. 229). I would argue that at least in part he was angry because of his cultural conditoning as a child in the 1940s.

--Thomas J. Farrell, author of Walter Ong's Contributions to Cultural Studies: The Phenomenology of the Word and I-Thou Communication (Media Ecology)

        5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2007-04-09

The man is brilliant and an extremely talented writer and TV commentator. Another great asset this author has is a sense of humor. He does not take himself seriously. He is loyal to his friends in good times and bad. He does not apologize for his ethnic heritage, his deep love of his native land, his deep religious faith, his Jesuit education. He is a well rounded person. I am always impressed with his TV appearances in that he never raises his voice or tries to speak over another guest. His manners are genuine. We need more Pat Buchanans!

A very insightful and readable biography
        of American perpetual Presidential Candi-
date Pat Buchanan, who used to be very
good on the McLaughlin Group. Buchanan
got my vote in 2000 when he ran on the
Reform Party tix and I was 4th District
Delegate in Ches., VA. Buchanan's troops
marched off with the matching funds, Buch-
anan started a silly Newsletter and a new
Third political party of hacks and started
        using that stupid 'judeo-Christian' moniker
again. I threw in the towel on him after
trying to talk sense into his brainwashed
followers. His sorry Newsletter was always
late and I ordered a bumper sticker from
his website store and got his Amer. 1st
Party Newsletter instead. What a bunch of
idiots he has working for him! Poor old
guy. His follow-up books are not very good.
They all leave out the United Nations /N.W.O
connection to everything. How the mighty have
fallen. I can't beleive a man this intelligent
is involved in the Knights of Malta and his
heroes are Reagan [one of the worst Presidents
of all time] and Nixon [one of the worst men
ever in the Whitehouse. Can you believe that
Nixon had Joe Namath on his enemies list? JOE
        NAMATH?!] What could have been...Sigh.

5 out of 5 stars If only this man had been president.......2003-10-13

Pat Buchanan has been labeled everything from dangerous to nazi. This book proves that he is just the opposite: a strongly principled man who wants what's best for his country.

Buchanan explains his conservative beliefs within the framework of growing up the son of a devout Catholic scrapper and the student of tough Jesuit priests. Although he spent much of his childhood raising hell, his upbringing was about morals and care of the soul. In Buchanan's time, care of the soul meant defending American freedom from the encroachment of Leninist communism. He didn't hate the Russians, but the system of government that was devouring half the world's freedom.

To the left-leaning critic who is undoubtedly screaming, "what about America devouring the other half": you're preaching to the choir. Buchanan has consistently asserted that we shouldn't be meddling in other countries' affairs. He recalls traveling to Japan and concluding that we were wrong to indiscriminately A-bomb the populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He goes on to say that our president prodded the Japanese into attacking Pearl Harbor so that he'd have an excuse to enter the war. That's hardly the voice of an imperialistic interventionist.

Nor is Buchanan a cut-throat capitalist. At the end of the book, he talks about an America of morals being infinitely more desireable than an America of laurel-resting decadence. He observes that democracy is by itself an empty vessel that can be filled with evil intentions just as easily as it can with good intentions. The moral fiber of our people, says Buchanan, is what ultimately defines us. Compare our grandparents' generation to ours; Buchanan's point is painfully obvious. To recapture our country, Buchanan insists we recapture education, freedom of religion (rather than tacitly mandated secularism or cowtowing agnosticism), and the Supreme Court. No arguments from me.

Some people have speculated that Buchanan is a closet white supremacist, an accusation which this book shoots down. Having grown up with two black maids, having recoiled at the treatment of a southern black man who couldn't enter a whites-only restaurant to mail a letter, and having a brother who speaks of dog-tagging an equal number of dead white and black Americans in Vietman, Buchanan clearly has no time for racial discrimination. He writes about welfare depriving black Americans of their dignity, and even suggests that an ammendment prohibiting racial discrimination be added to the US Constitution.

Other than the pleasure of glimpsing into the life of a man I greatly respect, I took from this book many lessons about where our new and supposedly more advanced society fails. By deemphasizing personal responsibility and blaming our problems on society, we're creating a generation of excuse-makers and softies. By acquiescing to anybody's ideas and summarily treating all ideas as equal, we replace values with anything-goes. When people don't have something to believe in, they don't believe in nothing; they believe in anything. There are many more nuggets in this book.

        4 out of 5 stars Insightful Autobiography.......2003-06-16

Buchanan is straightforward in telling why he thinks what he thinks in this intimate portrayal of his developmental years. In the 1950s Washington, D. C. was not the metropolis it is today. Buchanan grew up in the nation's capital during a time of innocence and traditional family values. He describes the cultural influences he had in that era and how strong Christian values established his worldview. The impact individuals had on him, such as his dad, are discussed as he talks about the influence being more by example than rhetoric. He mentions sensing change in the air in the nation's collective viewpoint while in graduate school at Columbia University. Buchanan is a gifted writer. Books like this affirm the essence of what has become cliche, i.e., that truth is often more interesting than fiction.
Buchanan connects his personality with something larger than self, however as he links his life with the nation. He discusses where the country has been and the direction in which it is headed. He contrasts that with the social consensus found during the days of his boyhood. One senses that he feels that as others have passed the torch from one generation to the next, he feels responsible for making sure generations following him inherit a nation for which to be thankful.

        Book Description

From a brilliant young legal scholar comes this sweeping history of American ideas of belonging and citizenship, told through the stories of fourteen legal cases that helped to shape our nation.

Spanning three centuries, Black Trials details the legal challenges and struggles that helped define the ever-shifting identity of blacks in America. From the well-known cases of Plessy v. Ferguson and the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings to the more obscure trial of Joseph Hanno, an eighteenth-century free black man accused of murdering his wife and bringing smallpox to Boston, Weiner recounts the essential dramas of American identity—illuminating where our conception of minority rights has come from and where it might go. Significant and enthralling, these are the cases that forced the courts and the country to reconsider what it means to be black in America, and Mark Weiner illuminates their lasting importance for our society.

5 out of 5 stars The Intricate Web of Storytelling is Immaculate.......2004-11-11

What a fascinating book which at its heart attempts to answer the question "what does it mean to belong?" Not only is that a question of actual acceptance by one group, but one of perceived acceptance by another. The book is extremely well structured. The author, in examining, what it means, specifically, to be American, takes us seemlessly through the history of the Afro-American in the US through poignant discriptives of key black trials. Each story is told with meticulous, at times excruciating, detail down to the color of Indian cloth for which young African boys were traded. Every sight, smell, and stutter of speech noted to present the reader with an immaculate image of the moment.
I am sure that Prof. Weiner's conclusion that the Afro-American now "belongs" (i.e. is not an outcaste in American society) is debatable by both liberals and conservatives, but the history and the final arguments are well stated and worth the time to read.

                        Book Description

A father-and-son road trip through some of the most musically fertile and diverse landscapes in America.

Long-distance father William McKeen watched his son grow up during summers, holidays, and long weekends. Now, with Graham in college, the two take a summer road trip down Highway 61, the legendary road of the blues, from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. In cheap motels and smoky bars, with obscure bluesmen and barnstorming guitar heroes, they discover how the highway links rich and poor, black and white. As they venture together through magnificent country, walking the hometown streets of Bob Dylan and Mark Twain, standing at Robert Johnson's haunted crossroads, William searches for an epiphany to define his relationship with his son at this time of change. Journeying from the Delta Blues Museum to the Alachafaya Café, father and son come to realize that they have a permanent connection that can never be broken by age or distance. 10 b/w photographs.

                        1 out of 5 stars Falls Flat.......2007-01-28

Aging, Dylan obsessing baby boomer takes his teenager on a car trip. A one dimensional documentary of a road trip taken by white, middle class, status-quo folk. I was excited when I saw the title, "I thought Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", I thought "Grapes of Wrath", I thought "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". I thought, "Characters, baby, situations man." But no, McKeen writes dialog like someone who, well, tries to write dialog from an armchair. He keeps talking about Gonzo, but man he could take a few lessons on keeping it real, keeping it desperate, keeping it edgy and tough. Hell, he won't even settle for a regular old domestic beer in his book. How real is that? This book sags like middle age paunch over a coach belt.

                        5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2004-02-22

What a great book, and for a kid who is just learning about rock and roll, I found it quite educational. I just hope my Dad is cool enough to take me for a trip like this when I am 18. I especially liked it when they ate food all the time. Buy this and give it to your Dad if he likes rock and roll, the older stuff, not like Radiohead or Third Eye Blind. Doyn doyn.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for someone you love.......2004-02-05

A wonderful book about the love between a father and a son. There's also a lot of humor and rock'n'roll as dad and son travel 6,000 miles down the middle of the country.

3 out of 5 stars ok we get the point.......2003-09-07

This book is a quick and dissapointing read. Let me say I'm a Dylan and blues fan, and wouldn't have read it if I weren't. But McKeen is obsessed with Dylan, or "His Holy Exalted Bobness" as he calls him. Almost disturbingly obsessed. In fact, he can hardly write 5 pages without dropping his name or thinking "how it felt for Bob to do (insert action here.)" Yeah, I'm sure they're on a first name basis. His whole commentary and conversation is just annoying and feels forced. In short, the real Highway 61 and Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" are indescribably better. Buy the album and drive the highway....that is a lot more fun than reading irritating book.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Journey Well Done.......2003-04-18

William McKeen has accomplished what would seem to be an almost impossible task: combining the lure of a road trip, an encyclopaedic knowledge of rock 'n roll history and a chance to delve deeper into his relationship with his son without turning those disparate elements into a chronicle that is weepy, academic or melodramatic. What arises instead on these pages will satisfy both the rock historians and the road trippers out there -- all of whom will want to fire up the car and stoke up the cooler once they read this book.

McKeen and his son, Graham, who grew up apart from his journalism professor father, take this trip through the literal and figurative heart of America, off the beaten path and down the back alleys of music and kitsch. Along they way, they rediscover America's cultural heritage and their own place in each others' lives. McKeen has a tremendous sense of humor, as dry as some of the stretches of highway he traveled. The ghosts of Dylan, Handy, Holly and Robert Johnson haunt this book and the drive south along a legendary stretch of pavement.

Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car.
