New Directions In Tropical Asian Architecture.......2007-09-06
A high quality publication with good essays for those seeking to understand the trends in architecture in some Asian countries. Worth having in the bookshelf.
BEAUTIFUL.......2007-07-11
This book was given to me as a birthday gift from my mother-in-law. I absolutely love this book. There are many beautiful photos. There are places and subjects that I never knew had so much beauty. Because I am already a huge fan of art and architecture, it was fun to learn about the many influences to Filipino style. I liked it so much that I had to buy a copy for my father (Born in Las Pinas - Metro Manila, Philippines)
Tropical Inspiration.......2007-01-31
I'm an Architectural Designer that lives/works in Jamaica and Bermuda and I'm also a fan of modern/contemporary architecture. I own a number of books on the subject, but few tend to address basic climatic issues that we in the Tropics face (and rightly so, since they are about projects north of the tropics). I've just received the book from my freight forwarder and had a chance to browse thru it. It really looks interesting and certainly provides inspiration for projects that can be successfully executed in our hot, humid climate.
The inclusion of architectural drawings (Plans, Sections, Elevations) is also welcome - too many books on Architecture neglect this very important point. I think this may be the telling factor for deciding whether this is to be another one of my coffee-table books, or a serious informative reference for ideas and inspiration. For now, I'm leaning to the latter.
Eye Opener.......2001-01-04
This book is a great book for young Filipino Americans who need some inspiration. As a Filipino American growing up in USA, I never really felt any connection with the Philippines. I was brought up by knowing only the stereotypes that sometimes make a Filipino American want to shy with embarrassment. Stereotypes are everywhere within any culture. By reading this book and flipping through the pages, I saw that Philippines is a beautiful place. Everyone needs take a look at this book. It's a great eye opener for Filipino Americans who have problems accepting their own skin.
A Good Christmas Gift For Relatives.......1999-10-26
I bought this book for myself. It's a true treasure trove of visual treats. Have you wanted to know how the homes of the rich and/or famous in the Philippines look? The variety of materials available for buidling and furnishing homes in the Philippines is astounding--rich woods, a wide spectrum of fabric, ethnic carvings and woven work. Linger over the detailed photographs in this book! Now I know what to get for my sisters and in-laws for Christmas!

Not really an Art Class -- At best: Good for a High School Art Teacher reference book.......2007-09-15
Okay book. If you're a beginner you may like it, but it lacks so much that is essential for the beginner. Being an art teacher, the flow of the book really makes sense. It works you from still life all the way up to portraiture. You do however need to know how to draw prior to purchasing this book and start painting. It does not provide you w/excersises for learning the elements of art (for example: form and how to create it through value, line, space, and being able to give the object spatial sense). Otherwise, it is a good beginner reference book in the sense that it'll give you direction if you're trepadatious.
In the back there is a sort of art equipment index explaining types of materials and suggested ways to use them. There is also a small glossary of terms.
At best though, it's a good reference manual for teachers and I'll tell you why. It has breif explinations on materials, just enough to jog your memory (if you haven't used the material in a while). Has a good chronology for a curriculum if you are teaching a full year or 2 consecutive years of a painting and drawing course.
There is no history included, but it does show different approches for the same purpose. Example, people approach going to canvas in different ways: 1. carefully sketching in water soluble pencil, 2. sketching in charcoal, 3. Using a very light wash, 4. no pre-sketching at all. In other words, it gives you multiple methods to achieve the same end--how you work depends on which you'll chose.
Not a bad buy, not a great one either.
You're better off buying "The New Artist's Manual: The Complete Guide to Painting and Drawing Materials and Techniques" by this author. It is this book and "the artist's color manual: ..." rolled into one.
One of the most profuse and well illustrated books on Painting.......2007-04-11
Art Class: A Complete Guide to Painting
by Simon Jennings
This book is one of those for which you could give more than 5 stars. It is one of the most profusely illustrated books on the subject of painting, and these are color illustrations. Nearly every single page has nearly half a dozen or more of the most vibrant, colorful, and well appointed illustrations that I have ever seen.
So what's the downside of the book? There is no downside. This is 192 pages of the most wonderful instruction on the use of painting that I have ever seen. I discovered this while visiting the art galleries and shops in Taos, New Mexico.
The book shows Simon Jennings to be the "general editor" and Sally Bulgin to be the "Consultant Editor" and several other names are included in advisory roles. I don't understand the identifications concerning "authorship" but certainly this is a book to stand out above and beyond the ordinary instruction on painting and the uses of color.
In my reviews of drawing books, I've always warned people of the use of buzz words and gimmick phrases such as "complete-guide-to" as a marketing gimmick. That's because almost no books live up to the promise. "Art Class: A Complete Guide To Painting" is most certainly an exception to this.
"Art Class" is one of those texts that stands so far above the other books on painting that it eclipses the entire field. It is one of those books that is so visually stunning that it is well worth the trip to a book shope to flip through its pages.
I liked the opening paragraphs on page 14, Chapter One, titled "Where Do I Start" where "Art Class" says:
"This book covers many levels of ability, but this page is amed at the absolute beginner rather than the painter whose interests have been focused and techniques honed through years of dedication and experience."
Absolute Beginners! That's who gets the most benefit of this book. It shows all the materials you need to work in water color, oil, acrylic and what you need to work either indoors or out; but the text is so encyclopedic that you are not surprised to learn that the authors also were advised by technical experts from WINDSOR & NEWTON, which is the company that makes fine art paints. This is the most visually compelling art book I have ever seen.
It's all about what you need to know to start working in color. More surprising still is the author's division of the book into three sections, instead of the typical ten to twelve chapters. Even the glossary is done in a unique manner. The page backgrounds are yellow, rather than white, and the outer edge of the glossary pages are trimmed in a beautiful red. This book is entirely designed by people who understand visual beauty and how to bring to life all things visually presented.
"Art Class" lists the basics as these classifications:
Color, Paints, Diluents, Mediums, Primers & Grounds, Varnish and size, Brushes, Knives and accessories, Palettes, Canvas, Boarrds and panels, Papers, Painting techniques, Pastels, Drawing Equipment. This book is so unlike everything else I have ever seen that it is one of my genuine treasures on the book shelf. If you get a copy, expect it to become "dog-eared" from constant use.
I haven't been so utterly overwhelmed by an art book since I discovered Jack Hamm!
Back to Art.......2007-02-23
This a great book to get someone started painting or as a refresher course for those already painting. Good ideas for getting over the mental blocks artists sometimes encounter.
painting for all levels.......2003-10-25
This is a very complete reference for what seems like all you need to know (and then some) about painting. I am not an experienced painter so I was almost a little intimidated at first with all the information presented here. The issue with me though was not the book (which is well organized) but putting the brush to the canvas...
It's definitely worth the price, often I'll resell a book that I just wasn't "in to" but this is a great reference that covers so much I know I'll have it for a long time to come (I've only owned it for 3 weeks at this point...)
fabulous compendium for beginning and intermediate artists.......2002-02-24
This is a remarkable resource -- comprehensive, well-organized and understandable.
I am not blessed with artistic talent, though I love art and have always wanted to try painting for pleasure. This book is perfect. It is divided into three sections: Where Do I Start, What Should I Paint, and What are the Basics. It begins at the beginning, discussing the choice of medium and theme; the selection, acquisition and care of supplies; and the choice of subject. It then moves on to technique: how to render a three-dimensional object on paper; how to compose a study; how to paint color, pattern and texture; painting space, depth and distance. These instructions are augmented by lots of pictures. You will see the step-by-step way to paint a tree, a face, a still life, a landscape etc. The final section really covers the basics -- mixing colors, types of paints, brushes, accessories, palette layouts, preparing canvases, paper, correcting mistakes, pencils, inks .... Every page is interesting. I learned so much. A glossary and index complete this wonderful resource.
The writing is clear and the many photos and illustrations are fabulous. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you are interested in teaching art or learning to paint, you cannot go wrong.

Customer Reviews:
Quite disappointing.......2001-09-24
This slim volume includes brief and elementary advice on equipment and film, composition, and exposure. Despite its title, it includes very little advice about dealing with nature as a subject.
The 114-page book includes 38 full-page or near-full-page photographs along with the photographs on most other pages. This reader would have been happy with more smaller photographs and much more useful text. Also, while there are some fine images in the book, there are many surprisingly weak ones which seem more than artistically or subjectively out of range - they look like amateur snapshots.
In its favour, this book offers a simple and accessible introduction to the elementary basics of composition. It also offers more examples than many better books do of a few of the topics being discussed. For example, a discussion of eliminating clutter from a frame has three large photographs of the same subject illustrating the topic.
However in the end I can't recommend this to anyone other than rank beginners in photography. Many of the elementary ideas in the book are found other beginner's guides and magazine or web articles. The purported subject of this book - nature photography - is far better introduced and illuminated in books by John Shaw and Tim Fitzharris, and in stunningly-beautiful books by Niall Benvie. Many of these books, too, offer much of the basic advice found in this book, and are a smarter buy.
A Beautiful, Insightful Photography Book for All Levels!.......2000-08-29
Judy is a magnificent and insightful photographer and teacher. One of the world's foremost outdoor photographers and certainly the best woman in her field. Her images are beautiful and her dignified teaching methodology is understandable, down-to-earth, and inspiring to amateurs and experts alike. There is something here for everyone. Her powerfully beautiful animal portraits and landscape images by themselves are worth the the price of the book--the descriptions of how each image was made is the frosting on the cake. Enjoy!

More amusement from Garth Ennis.......2005-12-05
If you're a fan of over the top superheroics or of the other 'The Authority' collections, this book is probably not for you. Seriously. It has none of the wonder, wit and widescreen formula of those stories written by Warren Ellis or Mark Millar.
What this does have is Garth Ennis...and that's enough for legions of comic fans. Ennis is the creator behind The Pro, Preacher, Dicks, Hitman, and the writer of some of the best stories involving The Punisher. His comics tend to involve characters that overly enjoy drinking, aren't afraid of sex and always dazzle me with their use of violence and profanity. And, most importantly, they always test the boundaries of political correctness, if not those of good taste.
I hate to use the word parody, since it really is The Authority characters, but it's kind of like that. Maybe I should use the term 'social commentary'? How about 'adolescent fanboy fantasy'? What if I just call it 'good fun'?
If this sounds like a good thing to you...and be real, how could it not, these stories won't disappoint.
Why?.......2005-08-11
This volume collects the Authority: Kev story and the More Kev mini-series. I am just unclear as to why these were ever written. Kev seems to exist mostly to annoy the Authority.
Kev is a BAMF working for the British government. He is in an unenviable position because a previous case went very badly (a minister was eaten by a tiger). In the first story Kev is hired to take out the Authority. Kev manages this almost without trying and then his troubles really begin.
In the second story we find out the history of "the thing with the tiger" and some of the current repercussions of it. With most of the Authority Kev must work with Apollo and the Midnighter on a retrieval mission in order to ward of an alien invasion. Of course with Kev involved things get pretty dicey for a while.
I am a big fan of The Authority and many of its related titles but this one just did not do it for me. There always seems to be a point to Authority stories but none can be found here. The distasteful Kev (first seen sitting on the loo) and the bizarre aliens seem to be an attempt and bad twisted humor. Add some less than stellar artwork and a major plot thread that doesn't make sense and you get a book that many will prefer to forget.
Book Description
Garth Ennis, creator of PREACHER, writes this fast-paced, uproarious story that spins out of the hit WildStorm series THE AUTHORITY.
The world is a lonely place when you're a man without a home -- just ask down-on-his-luck Special Air Service Corporal Kev Hawkins. After murdering his boss in a nasty government scheme, he's been banished from the United Kingdom under pain of death. What does the world hold for a man with little life experience or job training beyond wetworks and assassination? Then again, with a past about to catch up with Kev in the most violent and terrifying way possible, what the world holds for him may soon be beside the point.

Kev Done Right.......2007-06-18
Although I was not that fond of the earlier Kev stories, as a completist I had to check this one out. I am actually glad I did. Without trying to be goofy with The Authority characters, Garth Ennis was able to treat Kev the way he should be.
Some of Kev's past comes back to haunt him and his buddies. An people die and Kev is on the run, Kev has to find sanctuary and figure out just what is going on and who is after him. Eventually Kev figures it out and begins to make plans as only a man of his talents can.
This story brings the tale of Kev to a satisfying conclusion and ties up a lot of loose ends. Although still as foul-mouthed as in earlier books Kev's crudity has been played down in this story as has his utter distaste for gay males. This is a hard-nosed adventure tale that avoids the goofiness of the earlier stories. I was happy to see Garth got it right this time. Check it out.

Book Description
Imagine a secluded little house in the woods by the sea on the Maine coast. Down a bumpy lane, out of harm's way and the clamor of the modern world, Frankie's Place is a sublime summer retreat, with mussel beds out front, blackberry bushes out back, evergreens all around, and lovely views of forested mountains and a glacier-carved fjord full of lobster buoys, seabirds and sailboats.
One summer, Jim Sterba, veteran war correspondent, accepts an invitation for a weekend visit from a woman he barely knowsauthor Frances FitzGerald. He arrives and discovers a perfect writer's nest. He visits against in the fall. The next summer he stays for a week, and gradually falls in love with his host as much as her place.
Icy plunges into Somes Sound christen their island mornings, and long periods of dutiful writing are following with rigorous mountain walks, forays for wild mushrooms and sailing. In the evenings, Jim and Frankie prepare simple meals with local ingredients. These two couldn't have had more disparate childhoods - Jim grew up on a struggling Michigan farm while Frankie lived in a Manhattan townhouse and an English country estate. But their intelligence, ambition, and independence propelled them both into writing careers and kept them single until they met each other later in life. In this Tracy-Hepburn romance, the down-to-earth newspaperman charms the sophisticated New Yorker - their long path to real love makes us cheer Jim on as he walks up a mountain to propose to Frankie, and has us itching for a visit to Mount Desert Island.
Customer Reviews:
What's the point of this book?.......2006-12-02
I live on Mt. Desert Island so I guess I'm not captivated by Mr. Sterba's anthropological examination of his brief stays each year on MDI. I read the book while traveling to capture that 'sense of place' I was missing while away from MDI. That's about the only thing I find captivating about the book.
There is no apparent organization to the rambling narrative which touches on wealthy but non-ostentatious 'summer people' and the 'quaint ways' of the locals. Random observations, lots of words in 'quotes'...kind of irritating. A few factual errors about directions and where things are located (surprising for a reporter) won't bother the average reader.
I found the book disorganized and saccharin, but I'm happy that Mr. Sterba is happy.
What a wonderful pleasure it was to read this book!.......2006-06-21
There are not enough words to say how much I enjoyed this book. For anyone that loves Maine, seafood, politics, humor and history, this is a book you will devour. Having spent time vacationing in Maine while growing up, Jim Sterba's descriptions brought some of my favorite childhood memories back to me. As an avid reader of the New Yorker, I will now always, with a smile, think of the New Yorker as Toi Lit.
A Journalist's Heart.......2006-02-08
This is the best kind of travel memoir -- it has recipes, witty anecdotes and characters, natural and social histories, and enchanting descriptions of the land, sea, and sky. Oh yes, and lessons in battling house mice, an overabundance of tomatoes, and the encroachment of crass non-natives. But mostly, it has a narrator whose personal contributions to all of the above make it an even richer experience. Sterba has a journalist's innate curiosity about everything, a journalist's objective stance, and a journalist's heart -- he knows, in other words, wehere the stories lie and he knows how to spin them. He makes you want to know the people as well as the place. Frankie's Place reminds me of Peter Mayle's Provence stories, only less contrived.
Oh, Auntie Em, there's no place like home!.......2005-07-05
Jim Sterba's Frankie's Place is an engaging autobiographical sketch with at least a little something for almost everyone: from an Horatio Alger story and the revival of a fractured family, to the history of seacoast Maine (Mount Desert), to favorite recipes, to a too brief recounting of his quite brilliant career as a NYTimes and WSJ reporter. What resonates most is his infectious delight when he at long last relinquishes the vagabond life for matrimony and a home of one's own -- albeit shared with various in-laws and sundry rodents. It's a love story for the final nesting of a man who came in from the cold.
I couldn't help but wish that Frankie, the historian Francis FitzGerald, could have become more than an elusive presence, but I could understand his need to respect her privacy. (That is the way of the Wasps.)
A Love Story for Maine's Rocky Coast.......2005-01-15
Woven through Sterba's account of summers in Maine are bits of travelogue, Maine history, his experiences as a foreign journalist, recipes and his relationship with Frankie. The reader succumbs to that rapport with author and a well-loved place the same way as with Under the Tuscan Sun.
The character of New Englanders and of those drawn to its scenic shores is faithfully rendered in this book. I envy him his time in that scenic area that he brings alive for us. My mouth waters as I read of the culinary treats and I begin to feel I know the paths through the woods and the friends and locals who inhabit his pages.
Immerse yourself in this book if you are traveling to Maine anytime soon or use it as a substitute if you can't go.
