Book Description

New York between the wars: the city of Babe Ruth, Checker cabs, and Zelda Fitzgerald's infamous dip in the fountain at the Plaza Hotel. That is the city that comes gloriously to life in this fascinating collection of 100 historical photographs of New York's notable streetscapes and landmarks. Discovered serendipitously by author David Stravitz when he was on a hunt for used camera equipment, these rare photographs of the city are accompanied here by informative captions and an insightful essay by architectural historian Christopher Gray.

Not only are these photographs being published for the first time, but the clarity and detail of the images, taken with a large-format camera, are astonishing. One can read the signage on the sides of buildings, examine the items in store windows, and see how people on the streets and sidewalks are dressed. From Trinity Church to Harlem, from Coney Island to Yankee Stadium, these images transport the reader into the heart of a vanished era, when men wore fedoras and the Empire City sparkled with promise. AUTHOR BIO: David Stravitz is a professional photographer, an industrial design consultant and product creator for many Fortune 500 companies, and the author of The Chrysler Building: Creating a New York Icon Day by Day. Christopher Gray, the author of Abrams' New York Streetscapes and other books on New York City architecture, has written the "Streetscapes" column in The New York Times since 1987. Both authors live in New York City.

5 out of 5 stars GOLDEN AGE OF NYC.......2006-10-26

I love the fantastic black and white images in this book, you forget how spectacularly beautiful the New York skyline was before the 50's, 60's and 70's international style of Mies and SOM ruined the skyline blocking many of these breathtaking buildings from view and altering an iconic american image forever. At any rate, this is a really good book, with well researched, interesting text and aforementioned great photo's. As you look at all the beautiful buildings and lament the loss of so many over the years, you can't help but want to throttle Robert Moses and David Rockefeller.

No regrets but I wish there were more photos of the city and street scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Every brick and window.......2006-06-04

When David Stravitz bought around five hundred glass negatives from a New Jersey photo shop in the late seventies I bet he didn't realise what a nice little earner he was onto. This treasure trove of images has so far produced two books, the amazing day-by-day building of the Chrysler Building (ISBN 1568983549) and now 'New York, Empire State'.

Both books follow the same format, page after page of very detailed architectural photographs of the city in the first fifty years of the last century. This book has a hundred images (thankfully in 175dpi) taken by commercial photographers Peyser and Patzig probably for architects and builders as a record of their endeavours.

It is the detail in the photos that makes the book so fascinating. Taken on eight by ten glass negs after carefully selecting the right position reveals street scenes and buildings where you can read the road signs and study the detail work on skyscrapers that would be impossible to see from street level. Nearly all the photos are of commercial property though near the end there shots of tenements, shops, sport arenas and Coney Island. Needless to say many of the buildings shown came down years ago.

Each picture has the name of the building or city area and Christopher Gray adds more detail on six pages at the back of the book and this is where I felt the reader has been badly let down by the publishers. There are 130 photo pages yet only sixteen have page numbers, which makes nonsense of Gray's page numbered captions and the three page comprehensive index. Strangely page 105, with a whole page photo does have a number and this, I assume, was to be the case with every page but someone screwed up! Very frustrating (and do I get a refund?).

I recently reviewed a similar architectural photo book about New York City with 170 stunning photos taken by Samuel Gottscho between 1925 and 1940. Included are some marvellous Manhattan night photos as well as shop and house interiors. Gottscho's work helped to define the popular skyline silhouette image of the big American city. Have a look at 'The Mythic City' (ISBN 1568985622) by Donald Albrecht.

4 out of 5 stars Ageless and timeless New York.......2005-07-19

A wonderful pictoral history of early 20th century New York. One will be astounded at the space between the buildings of the city and the level of architecture throughout. In our daily hustle, this book reminds us of the beauty of the many buildings that make up the skyline of New York. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars New York, Empire City 1920-1945.......2004-12-01

I found David Stravitz's new book (New York, Empire City 1920-1945) every bit as thrilling as his book on the Construction of the Chrysler Building, building an Icon Day-by-Day. The photos are spectacular, oversized and chuck full of detail of a grand era in the history of the greatest city in the world. The big question for me is "is there another book to follow?". Can't wait! Lisa Franciosi

4 out of 5 stars Abstracts .......2006-04-24

I thought this book of abstract arts are full of lines and shapes similar to the cover but I was wrong. I forgot that different artist has different views of their abstract art. There are some pieces of abstract inside that contains only very simple shapes like circles or triangles, but it's a masterpiece already! I wonder why? but it's great to have this book... :-)

5 out of 5 stars A Plethora Of Modern Art.......2005-12-17

This amazing book by Muncie Hendler is great in many ways. The primary use is obviously exposing children to some of the greatest abstract art in the history of the world in a fun and interactive way. It succeeds brilliantly in that goal, but it is actually a good way for adults (especially young adults or people new to modern art) to learn about and appreciate abstract art as well.

The book is nicely printed, and features nice (but relatively small) color images of the original works of art as well as the actual pages to be colored in black and white.

This is a great way to expose people to the joys of abstract art. I think it is a brilliant little book, and is the best of the series by Muncie Hendler.

5 out of 5 stars Great for adults, too.......2003-01-05

There are 30 different abstract art masterpieces represented here, so it is definitely worth the price. All pieces are shown in color on the front and back covers, and each individual page has the name of the artist (years of their birth-death), title of the work, date created and type of medium used. So, it's educational and fun. I recommend it for all ages.

    Book Description

Two hundred color photographs by David Muench show rock paintings and petroglyphs in the arid regions of western North America, extending from Baja California north to Washington and from Wyoming west to California. Most of the locations are remote; many are secret. The photographs are organized into ten geographically-based styles: Great Basin and Mohave Desert, Green River, Colorado River, Little Colorado River, San Juan River, Gila River, Rio Grande, Columbia River, Chumash and Anza Borrego, and Baja California. Anthropologist Polly Schaafsma describes the cultural and physical context of each of these stylistic traditions, which range in age from six thousand years ago to the historic era.

      Book Description

Now available only from UNM Press, Stories on Stone introduces young readers to the rich history and mystery of rock art in the Southwest. As a youngster growing up in the American Southwest, Jennifer Dewey became fascinated with the images she saw carved in stone years before by the area's natives. For this book, Dewey has produced original color drawings that vividly recreate the images painted and carved into rocks centuries ago. Dewey explores who the original artists were and what their rock art meant, introducing young readers to the beauty and mystery of these images and stories on stone.

Dewey begins by pointing out that rock art is a mysterious but readable record of early human history in the Southwest. The author goes on to describe how rock art images came to be chipped and etched on stone and suggests some of the likely inspiration behind the images. Throughout the book, Dewey helps readers encounter the past with respect and understanding while opening their imagination to the stories told in these ancient works of art. This striking book will appeal to anyone wanting to share the power of rock art's ability to intrigue.

"What could be a dry and difficult subject is made enjoyable in a brief, readable text surrounded by Dewey's soft monochromatic illustrations of common rock art subjects. This attractive book will provide background knowledge for families who are planning to visit the Southwest and could be used in the classroom as enrichment for a unit on ancient cultures."--Booklist

The fourth collection of strips from Eric Orner's syndicated comic, "The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green," flips back and forth between the latest developments in Ethan's life--including his on-again, off-again romance with Doug and a new job as a personal assistant to a closeted celebrity weatherman--and hilarious one-off gag strips like "Really Pretty Far Off the Circuit Circuit Parties" and the "Dream Date Alphabet" ("Umberto is Unfaithful, and Vincent is Vicious"). Part of the joy of reading Orner's work in these collections is that it highlights the strength of his long-range storylines, which include a cast of nearly a dozen supporting characters, from his best friend, Buck, to the wacky Hat Sisters--who, in one memorable strip, provide their own delicious solution to the Clinton impeachment crisis, including washing out a certain independent prosecutor's mouth with soap.

      Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Real, Funny, and Sad-or-Real Funny and Sad.......2001-07-09

      Poor Ethan.

Orner watches his world carefully and with sympathy and empathy he brings his characters to life and makes me laugh.

A few of things spouted by characters in Ethan's world are direct quotations from my ex-boyfriend (Who now, by the way, has frosted his hair and gained 30 pounds---he looks like a bloated Vanilla Ice. I'm not even vaguely bitter.)

I bought all the Ethan books at once and never tired of his antics.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Literature.......2000-07-29

I will be brief. This book by Eric Orner is often hysterical; but it goes beyond being funny and those who have read Orner's three previous books know this. It is a journey into a world where humor, love, death, and relationships are explored in entirely new and different ways. A book that will make you laugh at loud and then rush to mirror asking is this me? Is this my life? And it is, in all it's saddness, comedy, and moments of bumbling glory.

5 out of 5 stars More Exposure Wanted.......2000-02-02

Ethan Exposed is the third in the published series of the cartoon adventures of thirty-ish gay guy whose life is so instantly recognisable to all of us, and the friends and lovers who share his social circle somewhere in New England, judging by the odd clue - Cambridge Massachussetts, perhaps? The drawings are well draughted (English spelling - I'm English), and the real joy lies in the tiny incidental details, which means that to get the most out of an Ethan Green cartoon, it needs to be revisited constantly, and this is always a pleasure.

The character of Ethan himself, who is sympathetic but by no means perfect, just like the rest of us, is the true reason why these cartoons are so good. We see him coping with his ghastly Jewish family on compulsory visits home, consulting the mercenary (though Eth doesn't realise this) Madam Zolna about the future, trying to persuade his on/off lover Doug to commit himself and buy a house with him, and indulging in cybersex only to be interrupted by a chatty instant message from his adoring mother.

Other joys include the Hat Sisters, supportive of Ethan at all times, Ethan's almost-human cat Lucy, who acts as a kind of Greek chorus on much of the action, and the odd cartoon which does not involve Ethan at all, but is a kind of commentary on other aspects of gay life.

This book, and the other two, are collections of cartoons published in the Washington Blade and elsewhere, and long may Eric Orner continue to draw them, and observe the gay scene so realistically.

People become writers, in large part, because they are in love with language. Wordstruck is the story of one such writer's unabashed affair with words, from his Halifax childhood awash with intriguing accents to life as a traveling journalist who "delighted in finding pockets of distinctive English, as a botanist is thrilled to discover a new variety of plant." Each aspect of Robert MacNeil's youthful existence prompted yet another linguistic thrill. Childhood churchgoing "did not provide me with any spiritual awakening ... but it anointed me with language." His mother's passion for the natural world and his father's life as a ship's skipper gave him two more complete vocabularies. And "If you define yourself by the language you acquire as you enter different spheres," MacNeil writes, the absurd language of "cricket was another piece of my self-definition."

MacNeil is best known as a novelist, coauthor of The Story of English, and onetime executive editor of the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. In Wordstruck he imparts a passion for Shakespeare (in particular, Hamlet), Dylan Thomas, and T. S. Eliot, whose ear for the English language, he says, was "the equivalent of perfect pitch--for the harmonic range of our tongue, its rhythms, and all its voices." Wordstruck is a charming memoir from a man "crazy about the sound of words, the look of words, the taste of words, the feeling for words on the tongue and in the mind."

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars English Language in Perspective.......2003-03-10

This book explains MacNeil's love and passion for the English language through his firsthand knowledge of it. He describes his first glimpses at the beauty of words by telling us the story of his childhood. Although it tells the story of a child growing up in a time of war in Canada it contains information and stories that everyone can find relatable. Any lover of the English language will enjoy this book. He hits you with just the right combination of history and personal experience to make the story real for the reader and yet informative at the same time. The information provided in this book is a mixture of both fact and opinion. Mr. MacNeil provides the history of his life and gives his opinion about how experience has influenced the initial spark and continuing devotion to the English language. I found it intriguing to look at the English language through such a different perspective than my own.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully original tribute to the English language.......2001-04-30

Any person who is passionate about the English language -- and not only as it is found in literature, but in conversation, in theater, in any kind of storytelling, everywhere--;who is fascinated by its many dialects and its complexity; and who fondly remembers milestones in the history of their own relationship to the English language, will realize what a treasure this book is.

What is particularly wonderful about it is how MacNeil combines an intelligent tribute to and reflection on the English language with personal memoir. Not every bit of the book is about reading, storytelling, or even language in general, although that is the major theme. A great deal of it strays from this into childhood in general...and it is so interesting and moving, especially for a person who grew up in and still lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. (I have to apoligize for this obvious bias...but I can't write from my heart about this book without revealing it)I have never seen my own city written about so articulately, and never really learned about its history. I always thought I lived in a pretty boring city with very little history...relatively speaking, of course. I certainly didn't think anyone existed who actually possessed nostalgia about this place. But he does! And he is a wonderful writer, so thankfully, he expresses his nostalgia well. Every Canadian should read this book, and others should as well-- perhaps an American or two out there might be interested in the experience of a Canadian, as dull as they might think it will be. It's not. What's impressive and unique is that there is nothing EXTREME in MacNeil's childhood. Most succesful memoirs, of course, have much more drama, and seem to all document extreme abuse and misery--eg Angela's Ashes, The Liar's Club... MacNeil's childhood is so simple, perhaps even (gasp) common, and yet all the more touching because of this. The drama and magic of childhood without the distraction the extreme situations is wonderful and refreshing in a literary world overwhelmed by stories of extremism and the 'abnormal'. One gets tired of eccentric and quirky characters and extreme situations-- it seems to be the easy way to be original, for a writer.

Anyway, I know I'm becoming a little long winded and have revealed an obvious bias which might make that New Yorker or Californian reading this cross this book off their mental list and look for another exotic account of an African adventure or heartbreaking memoir of life in India to read, but I had to simply speak from my heart. I feel so strongly about it...I read this book when I was in Japan teaching (sigh, leading to even more bias), when I was surrounded by a strange world and a strange language, and it made me feel more strongly than I ever have about my homeland and my language. Tears came to my eyes...yada yada yada O.K. I'll stop there...I don't want to obliterate all credibility... As much bias as exists behind my review, I must, say, even if you have no interest in a boy's childhood and coming of age in Halifax, Nova Scotia during World War 2, you should still read it. It isn't just about that (That actually makes up a fairly small part of it). This book is really about the story of a man's relationship with his language-- in childhood and as he came of age. As an aspiring journalist and writer, for this reason alone I find it to be a jewel. It is a very personal memoir about a lifelong love affair, which any of us who read reviews on Amazon.com likely share...a love affair with language.

5 out of 5 stars King Kenny will never leave the hearts of Liverpool Fans!.......2001-03-01

This book is one of the best I have ever read. It gives you more information about him, more then the newspapers could give you in 5 years. He tells you about all the good times he had at Liverpool being both manager and player. Explaining some of the arguments as well. My dad has met Kenny in the late 70's. He went to go and watch Liverpool play and on the way home he got on the bus with the full squad. My dad also stayed with them and in the morning Kevin Keegan asked him to nip down to the chemist for him. So the helpful man my dad is he zoomed off to the chemist but only forgot the money!!! So he had to run all the way back for the money. Now back to Kenny Dalglish. The greatest footballer Liverpool have ever had. This book is one of a kind. I would reccommend anyone to buy this book.
