Book Description

Although highly regarded during his short life--and honored by artists and architects today--the American artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-78) has been largely ignored within the history of art. Matta-Clark is best remembered for site-specific projects known as "building cuts." Sculptural transformations of architecture produced through direct cuts into buildings scheduled for demolition, these works now exist only as sculptural fragments, photographs, and film and video documentations. Matta-Clark is also remembered as a catalytic force in the creation of SoHo in the early 1970s. Through loft activities, site projects at the exhibition space 112 Greene Street, and his work at the restaurant Food, he participated in the production of a new social and artistic space.

Have art historians written so little about Matta-Clark's work because of its ephemerality, or, as Pamela M. Lee argues, because of its historiographic, political, and social dimensions? What did the activity of carving up a building-in anticipation of its destruction--suggest about the conditions of art making, architecture, and urbanism in the 1970s? What was one to make of the paradox attendant on its making--that the production of the object was contingent upon its ruination? How do these projects address the very writing of history, a history that imagines itself building toward an ideal work in the service of progress?

In this first critical account of Matta-Clark's work, Lee considers it in the context of the art of the 1970s--particularly site-specific, conceptual, and minimalist practices--and its confrontation with issues of community, property, the alienation of urban space, the "right to the city," and the ideologies of progress that have defined modern building programs.

4 out of 5 stars Great Artist. Nearly Great Book........2000-10-24

This book is about all there is on this guy. Kudos to Pamela Lee for sticking her neck out and getting a book out on him. It's WAY overdue. At times the analogies and stuff are a bit tiring... though maybe I mowed through it in too much of one sitting.

This guy cut up buildings and would jack parts of them up with foundation jacks for chrissakes. Damien Hirst on steriods 20 years early.

5 out of 5 stars an object to be preserved.......2000-04-21

Gordon Matta-Clark is one of those artists largely understood lightly, if at all, partially because of the lack of coverage of his work in most of art history. Lee's book goes a long way toward building a scholarship of G.M-C's work, especially in terms of its conceptual and analytical underpinnings.

When seen in conjunction with P.S. 1's retrospective of his drawings in 1998, and the recent republication of the only big monograph, G.M-C seems poised to be included in newer histories of art, which does a great service to everyone.

I read a good chunk of this book flying from JFK to SFO, and I found it to be well-written, cogent, and compelling as a document of G.M-C's work. I came away inspired. Hopefully his films will be the next portion of his oeuvre to be rereleased.

2 out of 5 stars Wasn't alllll that pleased with this one..........2002-10-18

This is just about the hardest-to-use 'beginner' book I've ever bought. ...:::

First, the organization of info about materials & tools is primarily keyed to & part of each project. So if one *doesn't want* to do those exact projects, one must flip around through the book for much of the necessary basic info. ... ...

Second, some info appears to be either lacking or misplaced (I couldn't find it, anyway). Some of the lacks are merely curious but some are downright irritating.

Just 2 off the top of my head ...
In the fasteners section, there's no mention -- let alone picture -- of toggle clasps, hmmm only the most popular, easy-to-use, most-varied-design fasteners around at the moment ...
and in the bead embroidery section, for a couple of stitches, until the *actual instructions* there's no mention of the *second threaded needle* which one was SPOZED to have at hand. ... ...

...If you've already mastered several basic embroidery stitches, this book probably won't offer you any bead embroidery techniques you haven't already figured out on your own.

For more helpful instructions & drawings, at least in the area of beginning bead embroidery, I'd recommend instead The Beader's Companion by Judith Durant & Jean Campbell -- also available here at Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Guide for the Beginner.......2000-01-04

I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about beading. For this purpose it was great. The description above says that there are 40 color images; be aware that all fourty of these images are on the first 6 or so pages and the rest of the book contains line drawings in black and white.

Each technique is introduced with a new project and the projects were very simple. They were just the type to start a beginner out. I was very glad to see an introduction to off-loom netting, because I wanted to make some of those collars of beads that sometimes are seen.

Each chapter is short and concise with one or two projects included. I especially liked the glossory of terms, the photocopiable project designer's sheet and the check list for a beginning beader's tool box.

      Happy Beading!

      1 out of 5 stars Confusing!.......1999-01-30

I bought this book hoping that I could learn how to bead. But what I found is that book is far from complete and confusing in its instructions. A major disappointment.

      5 out of 5 stars A one-stop beading extravaganza........1998-12-09

Complete Beading for Beginners is, first and foremost, a well-written text for the novice beader. It is a well thought-out manual that provides clear instructions on the basics and the technically complicated. You can begin immediately on a simple project, such as the Lace and Bead Choker, or you can go directly to a more technically advanced project, like the Bead Embroidery Sampler. Every beader can be assured of a beautiful looking piece of beading jewellery.

Instructions are clear and concise. As well, diagrams and callouts are scattered throughout the manual, giving the reader a sense of confidence that beading can be so easy. If you do encounter a problem, there's a trouble-shooting section to help you out (something many instructional manuals do not provide). I find this section more helpful in that I can learn and prepare for the potential pitfalls.

As well, the text is a fairly comprehensive authority on the art of beading. While other texts may elaborate more fully on specific aspects of beading, the Complete Beading for Beginners brings it all together. You don't need to go to a library to research beading; it's all at your fingertips. Also, the author has finally provided written instructions on beading techniques that had previously existed only by word of mouth.

I've got a copy for my family and I've just purchased another copy for my niece. Should any other family members show an interest in beading, they will receive a copy of Complete Beading for Beginners. Without a doubt, I bead you not.

      Book Description

In Radiant Identities, photographer Jock Sturges explores issues of youth and the liberation of body and spirit. These unforgettable images are made from his own circle of acquaintances and family; the settings are their homes and stretches of naturist beaches in France and Northern California. In superb reproductions, Sturges evokes the classical spirit of Old Master paintings and late-nineteenth-century photographic tableaux, while probing concepts of emergent sexuality and psychological intimacy.

Aperture's 1991 publication of Sturges's first book, The Last Day of Summer, came shortly after the FBI's much-publicized raid on his home in California, the confiscation of thousands of his images--deemed "pornographic"--and the subsequent rejection of the case by a federal grand jury. Now in its fifth printing, The Last Day of Summer has outlived and transcended that ordeal, drawing both critical and popular acclaim throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and bringnig Sturges well-deserved artistic recognition.

Radiant Identities is the second volume in Sturges's ongoing work. Physically and psychically revealing, these deeply felt images are glorioiusly natural and wonderfully compelling.

Elizabeth Beverly's introductory essay, drawn in part from conversations with Sturges's subjects, adds a new dimension to the photogarphs. These personal reflections shed light on the unique collaborative process by which Sturges's remarkable photographs are made.

In the book's afterward, noted photography critic A.D. Coleman places Sturges in the context of current debates surrounding censorship in the arts, and discusses the themes of innocence and sexuality in the photographs.

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning........2007-08-02

Many of the images in this book hold me totally spellbound, even after enjoying it (in hardcopy) for several years. I experience a sense of "beckoning", a call to enter the images and pursue the stories that most of them so strongly hint at. The cover photo so captivated me that I bought a official/authorized print of it.

3 out of 5 stars This is one of the few negative reviews you'll read of this book........2006-03-14

While Jock Sturges has almost flawless control of the technical aspects of the photographs in this book (excellent exposure and placement of the subject matter): the moments it captures leave much to be desired.

Perhaps it is simply that I am looking at it from the wrong perspective, and I am expecting of it something that cannot be expected of straight portraiture, but I dont beleive this to be true.
As I said, the black and white photographs are very well done in that they have wonderful transitions of gradient tones, and the subject matter is alwasy very clear and concise with little confusion as to what aspect of the photo you should be concentrating on. What i dont like is the overal emotional aspect of the photographs, and the reacions of the people in them. For me, there is only 2 photographs in this book that have any sense of emotive quality that i would actively seek out - and even those two photographs have problems.

      - In the photograph of the boys holding hands, and in several others, I see apprehension on the faces of the subjects. I see someone looking at a camera not knowing if they should be going about there normal bussiness, and someone who is unfamiliar with the person taking the photograph. It is not outright anger or dislike - just apprehension.

      - In the photograph of the girl and the boy leaning on each other on the beach; it is a bueatiful sentiment and it is well done, but you can see, you can FEEL the boy looking at the photographer with a sense of protectiveness, a sense of disconnection from his activities in order to be watchful of this person taking photos of them.

And in all but a few of the photographs - the person being photographed is looking at the photographer or the camera itself. this is fine in most photography - but the setting of this book is not the studio, and it is among other people. I would like to have expected an interaction with the people around the subjects, with the surroundings, or at VERY LEAST, an internal reactions of the subject themselves (wonder, happyness, sadness, questioning, SOMETHING).

I am of the school of photography that beleives in capturing the essense of a moment, the little tricks the body does to convey an emotion, that wich is a moving changing thing, that has a reason, a direction; an engagement.
You'll see them every now and again in the people your around a lot, a furrowed brow, an upturning of the mouth.
Part of all of this, the person should never be looking at the camera. they should be looking at you. at the person behind the camera - and not at a photographer, at a person with whom they FEEL something towards. and if they are simply looking at the camera, there should be something more in it then simple apprehension.
Personally, this book fails in all of those things for me. It is titled "Radiant Identities" - but I see no identities, I see no emtional personality, I see only bodies who are unsure and aware of a man taking photographs of them. I give this 3 stars becaus the techniques are well done; and becuase as a resource for artists, it has a few selections that are wonderufl anatomical and surface muscle descriptions that are hard to find elsewhere. From the perspective of art however I would give it a 2 at best.

5 out of 5 stars The early Jock Sturges.......2006-03-13

I first came across this book about ten years ago and when I did I instantly became a Jock Sturges fan. But it wasn't until resonantly that I realized just how powerful and deep his art can be. Visiting an art gallery I was stunned by the detail, contrast and the three dimensional quality of Jock's full sized prints. The images you see in his books might have been taken with a medium format camera such as a Hasselblad. Viewing his full sized images, with all their extraordinary detail, you become aware of just what an 8 by 10 view camera can achieve in the hands of a true master. The models seem almost alive.

But this wasn't my only surprise. Many of the images I saw at the art gallery had never been published and I thought that these were Jock's most profound and challenging work. One such print, "Julien et Antoine, Montalivet, France; 2004", really knocked my socks off. We see two beautiful young twin brothers, as naked as the day of their birth, in a bedroom. We know this to be an adult's bedroom as there are no toys or other childish things about, only an adult sized backpack beside the bed. The translucent canopy draped over the large bed and the house plant visible in the upper left corner gives the room a romantic, almost feminine feel. Yet the boys, still a year or two from puberty, seem to own this very adult space.

Antoine is seated on the bed, very relaxed with his arms at his side. Julien stands before him and with an almost sensuous sence of self-confidence he establishes a relationship with us by gazing directly into the camera. His arms are crossed over his chest-perhaps for protection-but, like his brother, he makes no attempt to hide his exposed genitals. His weight is resting on his left leg and his body is shifted sideways in a pose that suggests he is well aware of his beauty and emerging sexuality. This little boy is no longer entirely innocent. He knows that evil exists. He is aware that there are those who would see his beauty as an obscenity and his trust as a come on. We feel privileged that this beautiful boy has allowed us, the viewers, to examine every detail of his stunning body as he meets our gaze without fear or shame. But at the same time we feel challenged. The boy knows that if there is any indecency the fault lies not with him, or with his brother, but with us the viewers. If there is evil then that evil is in us, not him. This picture is worth much more than a thousand words.

If "Julien et Antoine, Montalivet, France; 2004" were to be compressed to the point where it was small enough to fit in a book-or be posted on the net-the stunning technical skill and detail of the photo would be lost and as a result it might well appear pornographic. I felt as if Jock had lead us right up to the edge of the void and then, at the last possible moment, pulled us back to safety. This is surly one of the most beautiful, powerful and potentially disturbing images of the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding works of art!.......2006-02-22

Read my review on "The last day of summer" if you are looking for a book to sexually excite you. In my opinion this is his second best book, maybe is the fact that the book is not as "complete", as it covers too many different surroundings. It still is a 5 star work of art, go ahead and buy it, you'll be pleased!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful work, great book to own.......2005-10-07

Mr. Sturges second book, by now he'd fully developed the style his fans all know so well. Some of his best nudes, and clothed portraits, are featured here. This is one of the better photo books I've got, maybe one of Sturges better books.
The most notable feature are perhaps the two contributed essays, the one at the front of the book quotes unidentified subjects of Mr. Sturges on their feelings about posing for him, you won't find anything else like that until the most recent book "Notes".

Ranma 1/2 is a keen social satire about a young martial artist who turns into a girl every time he is splashed with cold water. This time, Ranma must protect the magic string that ties his pigtail.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars So THAT'S why he/she wears a braided pigtail..........2003-04-15

In the first half of this book you learn what is up with that braided pigtail that Ranma is always sporting, and why he/she rarely takes it down. In the second half, several of the group end up winning tickets to a hot springs obstacle course. The prize is a trip to any hot or cold spring in the world. Guess where Ranma and co. want to go... Partners are switched a dozen times and Ryoga actually makes it to where he wanted to go--sort of. Avid fans of Ranma, you will like this book! But it does get very confusing very quickly.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say? Wow........2000-06-09

Well, I've finally read the entire Ranma 1/2 series (if you want to know where I read the untranslated novels, e-mail me). All I can say is wow. I love Takahashi-sensei more than ever now, but I can't help feeling a bit sad about it. This review is just to tell all you folks out there that have never read Ranma, (or have only read a little bit of it and disliked it) it's truly a great accomplishment. A few reasons why I like it. First, it's very, very funny - it appeals to my sense of humor exactly. But here's the interesting thing - Takahashi-sensei doesn't just leave it at that. In some of the later novels, Ranma is positively dramatic, and I'd be lying to you if I said I didn't cry on more than one occasion. Of course, I think perhaps the main reason that I like Ranma 1/2 is the romance, which is Takahashi's forte. Ranma and Akane's relationship goes so slowly, Takahashi just gives you little momments between the two, yet ultimately it is enough. Another huge part of Ranma - the action, of course! This is what draws many people in to reading Ranma, what first appealed to me. Takahashi is so fantastic with her action scenes, it makes you wonder where she gets it from! She can do a love scene, a comedy scene and an action scene all rolled into one. I haven't even mentioned the art-work yet. At first when I picked up Ranma, I made the mistake of thinking it overly simplistic, which I've come to realize is not the case. It's true that Takahashi goes for a simple style, but it's beautiful in it's simplicity. Takahashi truly communicates with her art in a way that others miss.

To conclude: read Ranma 1/2. Trust me when I say it's worth it. There will always be a special place in my heart for Ranma 1/2. Thank you Takahashi-sensei, for sharing your gift.

        5 out of 5 stars I can't get enough!.......2000-03-22

O.K. so you want a funny manga? Get a Ranma book! This halarious series will make you laugh until your sides are aching. Rumiko Takahashi is genious, she adds enoug confusion to make this book funny but you can still understand it. If you haven't read a Ranma book before the story line is a little like this: so you've got a hot guy right, well the only problem is that he and his father have a little...well, accident... so when ever he is splashed with cold water he turns in to a girl, on top of that he's forced to become engaged with his dads best friends daughter. Confused? Just read the books. In addition to awesome drawings Rumiko Takahashi creates a hot of halarious and twisted (Kuno, Hopposai ^^) characters. I really recomend this book. P.S. sorry about my spelling heh heh heh ^-^'

          Book Description

Fear and Loathing creates a sharp and savvy profile of one of the most provocative voices and distinctive personalities of our time. To Hunter S. Thompson, being a Gonzo journalist means doing whatever it takes to get to the truth; everything from dropping acid with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters in the 60s, to participating in wild orgies and getting his nose broken while chronicling life with the Hell’s Angels, to founding the Freak Power Party and running for sheriff of Aspen in 1970. A virtual icon, Thompson has regularly trashed the prime directives of reporting—accuracy and objectivity—yet he nonetheless always produces some of the sharpest political and cultural analysis around. Surrounded by submachine guns, fistfuls of colorful pills, and the ubiquitous Wild Turkey, Thompson careens through his life and career, unfolded in this book in all its decadence. New art by Ralph Steadman and over 20 black-and-white photographs are featured.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Narrative but Dated. .......2007-01-26

Well, I really enjoyed this biography of the Gonzo Master, but I have to warn potential readers that the work was written in 1994 and was then reissued in 2004. It's narrative ends shortly after 1990, and, had I known this beforehand, I would not have bought the book. This was a bit of a disappointment because the later years of his life are deservant of full chapter treatment--and then some. His suicide is a mystery that cannot be illuminated here so be forewarned. As far as Perry is concerned, the author's perspective is outstanding as he clarifies much of Thompson's enigmatic personality. The sources he selects are also very enlightening. This Fear and Loathing, just like the original, was wonderful, but Perry's tale is not definitive unfortunately.

5 out of 5 stars The Devil is in the details.... superbly crafted !!!!!!!!! .......2006-03-28

A piece of history... not unforgotten. Details very well documented. Impressive and an amazing writer. Looking forward to the next one.

          5 out of 5 stars Where do I start?.......2005-11-11

This is a fun book, no doubt about it. Granted, it's not Hunter Thompson writing, it's his life story, but it's certainly worth reading up on. The story is really fascinating and I will probably read it again before too long.

I originally bought this book out of necessity, I had to write a mammoth paper on The Good Doctor back in May and was short of sources. This was the best-looking book that I could find on Amazon, and I wasn't dissapointed by the package I recieved, just in the nick of time to read and then write my paper. Without this book, I would have been in trouble. Thank you Mr. Perry for writing this book and thank you Mr. Thompson for the life it documented. RIP Hunter.

5 out of 5 stars Hunter S. Thompson Product of His Own Era.......2005-04-12

Well written biography by Paul Perry that makes for great journalism in its own right. Portrays what he sees in the drug-induced, wife-slapping, self-destructive mind of his subject. Were Hunter S. Thompson in the public school system of Louisville today, there is no question that he would be ESE and on somebody's caseload. A brilliant but tragic figure, he self-induced his own fate. Wanted to be Hemingway but wasn't. Rather, he was his own creation.

5 out of 5 stars "I said it was a rumor to that effect.I made up the rumor........2004-08-04

Just finished this great unauthorized biography of HST.After having read several of HST's books,I was curious as to what he was really like and what made him tick.I am also a long time fan of Trudeau's Doonesbury and see the obvious similarities between the Duke and HST.Though a very enjoyable read, HST still remains as mysterious as ever.Maybe Perry has told us everything possible, and we might just as well accept him at face value. We're not ever likely to find out from the Dr. himself, whether he even knows or much less cares. The book gives us a lot of insight into his women folk and some of his cohorts.I use the word cohort because from this book I got the feeling that the idea of a friend is very different in the mind of HST.The most curious character that comes out in the book is Ralph Steadman.,the artist who seems to be cut from the same log as Hunter. It is definately a shame that about 20 or so of his drawings were not included. The cover certainly whets one's appetite for more.Anyone who has read a HST book should really like Perry,s book.

          A late note!!!
The Doctor died on Feb 20,2005.
Rolling Stone Magazine has devoted practically its entire March 24,2005 issue to Hunter S. Thompson.A "must have" for any fan.
