Photographic journal that will definitely spur some new ideas. Most are more modern, but reminiscent of the Frank Lloyd Wright style of architecture with very strong lines. Multiple settings and unique media usage. Every structural artist who plans an endeavor in the garden should have this!

Book Description

This book will have beginning artists of all ages drawing faces that are strikingly realistic and detailed. Artist Carrie Stuart Parks honed her fast and effective drawing skills as a professional forensic artist. Here she makes drawing fun and easy, showing beginners how to render vivid self portraits and portraits of others, all in a matter of hours.

Artists will successfully learn how to master proportions and map facial features accurately. They will then study shapes within a composition and learn to draw them realistically. Lastly, artists will study the subject's values and use them to bring life and accuracy to each portrait. A final "checking" step helps artists capture heightened realism and accuracy.

This book features clear step-by-step instructions, before-and-after examples from students, and proven drawing exercises used to train artists throughout the country.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces.......2007-04-11

This book was recommended to me by someone who is an artists for crime victims. It was used in the classes she went to. I am practicing drawing eyes at the moment. I have to say that I am now drawing the best eyes ever. This book explains more that where to put the features. It explains how to make the features come to life.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing Techniques Analyzed and Simplified .......2007-03-23

Again, I checked this one out from the library before purchasing. I did not want another book that just told me to sit down and 'draw what you see'. When it comes to faces, the proportions are the hardest part for me. This book goes into great detail explaining how to 'measure' the features of a real person, not the imaginary kind we see in fashion layouts. I have actually seen great improvement after only a few drawings. The best way to improve is to do separate studies of each facial feature until we get them right, and this book explains how. Practice is what brings the progress. Finding time is the problem. This book makes it very clear that anyone with good eyesight can learn to draw peoples' faces. It's just like learning any other skill. This woman teaches this course to police artists, ordinary people with no previous artistic training. It works!

5 out of 5 stars This book really helped!.......2007-02-08

I love this book, I got it from the library, but I had to have my own copy. I was able to actually capture a likeness for the first time! Her technique of measuring can be applied to more than just faces. I bought her second book, but this one is better.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing Realistic Faces.......2007-02-07

I am very happy with this book, gives you a step by step insight on portraits. This book was also shipped to me within two days, fast and efficient!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Learning to Draw Realistic Faces.......2007-01-10

I love to draw, and most know the Hardest thing to draw is the face. Drawing a Face Realisticly can make or break a Masterpiece, before i was ok my sketchs were nice. I got this book and Practiced, every step, very easy to follow, and understand. Within weeks, i was creating some Portrait Quality Sketches, Now all my friends and Family are asking me to Draw them. I would Recomend this Book to anyone that loves to draw, especially Realistic Drawing.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing Portraits.......2005-08-12

This is the second book of Mr. Civardi's that I have purchased. I am impressed with the way he imparts his knowledge and expertise to the pages of this book. I highly recomend this book for anyone interested in learning to draw portraits. The detailed steps from start to finish are easy to understand and follow.

2 out of 5 stars Contains mostly drawings, little description.......2005-07-12

This book had a lot of examples of Civardi's work but not a lot of tips or instructions about drawing it. In the beginning, there is a full page of suggestions but that's about all there is to it. Lots of pictures of body parts, no step-by-step, no breakdown of lines or sections. Basically, the book shows you the finished products, not really the process of drawing. As another reviewer said, if you would like a book with a lot of examples of his work, this is it.

I would suggest Jack Hamm's "Drawing the Head and Figure" over this book. Lots of substance, and the instruction is done in a way that leaves lots of room to create a unique style.

1 out of 5 stars Not Much Substance.......2005-06-10

Civardi is a talented artist, but there was little substance to the book. There was very little detail about the actual drawing process and skills that might be helpful. After actually seeing the book, I was very disappointed. I had the same problem with his drawing techniques book. Both were very brief, expensive and short on substance, more like pamphlets than instruction books. If all you want is a slender book with some examples of his work and you don't mind the price, you might like this, but someone looking to learn portraiture would be best served elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars good fo beginners.......2004-11-03

if you are interested in realism drawing this book will put you on a right track

4 out of 5 stars Good examples of realist drawing.......2003-11-15

I'm something of a fan of Civardi's books because I like his clean, "classical realism" style. This book is rather thin and light in describing the details of technique or giving exercises. I wouldn't recommend it to an absolute beginner (if you're just learning to draw, you would probably be better off with Betty Edwards' flawed but effective "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" or a similar book). But if you've started regular drawing practice, and want some good examples of realist portrait drawing along with useful general advice on appoaches to the subject, this book may be worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE!" Hollywood Glamour Book.......2001-05-09

In 1994 celebrity photographer Len Prince began an ambitious project of photographing contemporary stars in costumes and settings that evoked the "golden" era of Hollywood. Using a Deardorff 8x10 and lighting techniques that pay homage to George Hurrell, he produced a magnificent collection of images which include Drew Barrymore, Jack Lemmon, Patrick Stewart and Martin Sheen. To say Prince's images are breathtaking would be nothing short of an understatement.

Not to be missed is Prince's comments on some of the sittings. My favorite being his sitting with "Miss Piggy," which includes the incident with the "buffet" and how he had to sustain himself through the afternoon shooting on a single grape.

The book introduction is by writer Dominick Dunne and is alone worth the price of the volume. In presenting Prince's work he recounts a time long gone when style was in vogue and Hollywood was the home of STARS.

      5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......1999-12-08

Truly beautiful pictures. It's almost a puzzle trying to figure out who they are. He takes people like Drew Barrymore and Jack Lemmon and turns them into glamourous, untouchable stars to be worshipped of the 30s and 40s. He has put stars back in the time when they were STARS. The intro by Dunne is heart warming and sad as he remembers the big movie era.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous author!.......2001-11-07

I have been a faithful Hooters restaurant'regular' since 1992, and I must say this book really captures Hooters in its full glory. The pictures are hot...and April is a goddess. (...)I found her humor to be exactly in line with what goes on at Hooters. At least the 32 locations I've been to. We all love Hooters, the girls, and the food (...)!

      1 out of 5 stars A MAJOR disappointment !.......2000-12-20

At least the calendar phots of the waitresses are beautiful ! Very liitle else can be said for this unfunny waste of [money] ! Bland, dry, inoffensive humor, peppered with insults to various anonymous customers as well as unflattering "tidbits" regarding the waitresses' only goal of working at Hooters (cash, by way of acting like ditzy airheads).

Avoiding this book may be able to keep the illusion of Hooters as a fun place to visit, at least until you become a "regular", which the author considers an over-tipping regular customer. If you don't overtip, then you're just a "jerk" or an "annoyance".

Sub-par rip-offs of Letterman's top 10 lists are semi-frequent, with results rarely conjuring more than a slight chuckle.

For anyone who really wants to know of the inner workings of Hooters, visit a restaurant, and chat with your waitress(es). You'll get as many different answers as you ask ladies, and at least you can enjoy a beer and some good food....

The author, pictured on the cover, enjoys a career as a scientist. Here's hoping she keeps her day job !

1 out of 5 stars Al least the pictures are good !.......2000-12-19

Sadly, the same can't be said for the text.

The author, who is pictured on the book's cover, enjoys a career as a scientist. Hopefully, she will be very successful, so as not to try another attempt at humor writing. Most of the humor is dry, unfunny, and rarely warrants more than a slight chuckle, not to mention the occasional stab at anonymous customers the author considered "jerks".

For the true Hooters experience, go to one of the restaurants, as this writer can truly attest to a 99% guaranteed good time. The only thing this book is good for are the approximately 80 calendar type photos of Hooters waitresses, mostly in bikinis. But save yourself a couple of bucks and buy a calendar at your next restaurant visit.

4 out of 5 stars A Must for any Fan of Hooters.......2000-10-25

This book is a must for any fan of Hooters. Lets you know what the girls think of the regulars and the jerks. A must read if only for the photo of April that is in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on the workings of Hooters.......1999-07-27

Great book for anyone who loves the Hooter's chain. Tells all you need to know about the inworkings of the stores and the girls. Must read for a regular

5 out of 5 stars A witty look at gay life in the early 1990s.......2003-06-07

"The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green," by Eric Orner, is a series of comic strips that focus on the book's title character: a young gay man. Because there are some continuous story elements, the book almost reads like a graphic novel. The copyright page notes that the book's contents have copyright dates from 1990 to 1992.

Orner fleshes out Ethan's world with some entertaining supporting characters, such as his friend Buck and lesbian couple Liza and Beth. But my favorite supporting character is Madame Zolna, Ethan's deliciously sarcastic "psychic" advisor; the Zolna episodes have real bite.

Along the way Orner satirizes love, dating, politics, "outing," sex, representations of gays in popular culture, and other topics. Celebrities (like Madonna and Kitty Kelly) are occasionally spoofed. Orner's drawing style is fun, quirky, and occasionally a bit raunchy. Overall, this is a witty, intelligent, compassionate, and very entertaining glimpse at gay life. Essential reading for fans of cutting-edge comics.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy, Stirring, Funny & Wise!.......1998-10-28

Author Eric Orner has his finger (ahem) on the pulse of Gay America. His character, Ethan Green, is a kind of gay Everyman. He makes wrong choices in dating, fashion and sexual positions. But we love him anyway. Because he is us. And we are him. We bottoms of the world really should unite, at least for brunch some Sunday afternoon. I say, July in Provincetown.

Thinking Like An Entrepreneur is a yes-you-too-can-achieve-your-dream-power-of-positive-thinking self-help motivational book coupled with some very serious business analysis. While some people dream of coming up with a hot idea and taking the next great Internet company public, this book focuses on building a real business with real profits. Such businesses can make the founder worth millions of dollars in only a few short years without the company ever becoming public. This book is written for entrepreneurs who want to make their company profitable ASAP.

But to build such a business demands an understanding of simple financial and business decision making. Thinking Like An Entrepreneur teaches you to understand the fundamentals that underlie intelligent decision making for your small company.

The book covers many important topics (cash flow, profit margins, and the time value of money, etc.) and will help get a new entrepreneur started. Whether or not you wish to grow your company to a substantial size, this book will help you succeed in business by teaching you to think more like successful entrepreneurs--to make fundamentally sound decisions. Some of the book's highlights:

If you choose not to grow your business, but just to do "your own thing," Chapter 23 covers becoming a consultant in some depth. This is a viable avenue for computer programmers, graphic artists, videographers, and, of course, web page designers today. The chapter is a short primer for deciding if you want to become a consultant and is an introduction to some of the basic issues consultants face. The new area of online consulting is briefly discussed.

If you choose not to start from scratch, but rather, buy an existing business, Chapter 26 goes into detail into buying a business. You will learn how to value a smaller company, including valuing intellectual capital. A rather lengthy chapter you might choose to skip unless you really are going to seek a business to buy.

Chapter 17 shows you why it is important to incorporate your company and discusses the option of creating an S-corporation. Issues of taxation and liability are discussed. The chapter helps you understand how to minimize your overall tax bite and get the best liability protection possible.

Chapter 9 discusses the role of personality type in building a company. It is important that you start a business that is suited to who you are as a person. A great market opportunity is not a great personal opportunity if you won't enjoy the business. This chapter is written to help you find a business suited to you.

Chapter 4 and 5 go into detail explaining how thriving businesses bootstrap themselves to financial success. You are introduced to the concept of compounding intervals and rates of return (which are further developed on Chapter 16 which is dedicated to the nature of compounding money within a business). Proprietary products are discussed. This tread of thought is continued in Chapter 12 which deals with cash flow and how cash flow issues can affect your company's growth rate. A hypothetical game company making "Lifers" is considered. These chapters alone probably make the book worth reading.

Chapter 7 discusses the author's personal views on how the Internet is changing business today and what the Internet means for Microsoft and other established companies. An easy-to-read chapter, but with no hands-on advice on how to create your site.

Chapter 13 is a comparison of the fields of computer programming and computer-based training (CBT). The goal is to get the reader to see where value is created within the type of business he or she will start.

Chapter 15 discusses the role of luck in business and explains why Bill Gates is the richest man alive today. You will learn how to play the "game" of business appropriately allowing for the role of luck.

The book is written in an irreverent fashion, and might be subtitled, "Entrepreneurship Lessons From The Movies" as the author refers to several films to make his points. Although light-hearted in fashion, the book gets a bit mathematical in a few chapters. But those chapters are well worth the read to anyone serious about building a company.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some useful info and an easy read.......2005-08-25

A sense of humor and sarcasm guaranteed to make you cringe, a very limited set of cases (mainly IT), examples and industry references and too many mentions of Bill Gates are the bad points of this book, but all in all I found it useful. A sort of business and entrepreneurship for dummies guide. Highly recommended starting point for those want to become business people but know that their knowledge of business basics is lacking. Perhaps not so useful for people not in this position. Sections on compounding and cashflow stick as two of the more useful.

3 out of 5 stars Very good for a newbie entrepreneur.......2005-07-16

Mr Hupalo's book is a very informative read for a newbie business person or wannabe entrepreneur. He explains some of the great things about a business and why it's important to choose the correct, high margin business. The book is well written and informative but could have been edited a bit better to make the read clearer.

The chapter on corporations I don't agree with. Mr Hupalo feels all entrepreneurs should establish a corporation rather than a sole proprietorship. This is not the way June Walker feels in her excellent book: "Self Employed Tax Solutions". This book lists the advantages for an entrepreneur for using a sole proprietorship such as:

                * You and your business are one and the same.
                * A sole proprietor and his business use the same tax year.
                * It's income or loss is your income or loss.
                * It's debts and assets are your debts and assets.
                * Assets, originally for personal use, can immmediately be used in your business without paperwork and without negative tax consequences, and there can be positive tax consequences without any cash outlay.
                * It's the easiest, quickest, and cheapest business structure to set up and maintain with regard to recordkeeping, accounting, legal procedures, and fees.
                * It does not require a separate tax return (a Corporation does).
                * A sole proprietorship allows for a simple, direct deduction of home office expenses.
                * A SP can immmediately reduce your other taxable income.
                * A SP allows for the most advantageous tax remedy when husband and wife work in the same business.

Mr Hupalo has written a good book about business which any new entrepreneur should read but just skip the chapter which advises incorporation immediatly. For most single person businesses a Sole Proprietorship works best. After you have an employee or two, then you should think about incorporating.

4 out of 5 stars Smart Choices for Entrepreneurs -- Great Stallbusting Ideas!.......2004-09-25

The title of this book is a little misleading. It is not helping you learn how to think like an entrepreneur. In fact, the book teaches you how to more accurately make assessments that entrepreneurs have to make. If you do that, your entrepreneurial success should be higher.

I like books about avoiding thought patterns that delay or derail progress, and thoroughly enjoyed this one. In many ways, the book parallels the outstanding book about personal decision-making, Smart Choices, that I strongly recommend you read as well.

Why, then, did I rate the book at four stars rather than five? Basically, the book didn't quite get the editing it deserved. There are some minor misspellings of the sort that should have been caught. More seriously, the book indulges in unnecessary vulgar language in a few places. If those things don't bother you, see this as a five star book. It certainly is in every other way.

Some of the subjects include how to overcome risk aversion, how to lay off risk, picking the type of business to go into, establishing a business model that has the best chance of success, and how to have the business match your personality and preferences. These are subjects I feel are important for any entrepreneur, and are often not covered by business books. I was especially impressed by the focus on ethics and high moral tone of the advice.

This book will have value both for people who are thinking about becoming entrepreneurs and those who are already running small businesses. Since the book often focuses on computer consulting and computer-based training, those who are in those fields will find the book to be especially valuable.

As a test of the value of the book's content, I applied the concepts to my own management consulting firm and found that the analyses were accurate and useful. So you can add management consulting as another business type for which this book is good.

One of the things I liked about the book is that it realistically encourages people to think about entrepreneurship. Even if you decide that having your own business is not for you, this book will give you a better basis for feeling confident about that decision.

If you do decide you want to buy or start a business, I suggest you share this book with your spouse and a person who already has a business in the same area. Then discuss your ideas with each of them in terms of the concepts in the book. Their feedback will help you form a more realistic view of your ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for existing and future biz owners.......2002-10-15

Finally a book written on entrepreneurship that has so much to offer! A guide for fledgling IT entrepreneurs as well as a resource for those faced with the myriad problems of the modern business environment. It is also an introduction to computer consulting and building a multimedia company. Readable, concise, precise, and pragmatic. The in-depth coverage and sound counsel make this a book that should be in every business person's library. I've read my copy twice. It's twenty-seven chapters of very good, easy-to-read inspirational reading. A must read for anyone thinking about starting or expanding their existing business. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Entrepreneur Highly Informative.......2002-08-12

This book's got a lot of good stuff in it--those critical factors that help contribute to making good business decisions. I've already seen some improvement in business growth. In fact, the usefulness of Entrepreneur's information is a lot like Guerilla PR: Wired: both have tons of really useful info to entrepreneurs on how to build their business.
