Book Description
Does fame empower architecture or undermine it? Does the star power or cult status of an architect enhance the art or dilute it? This issue of Perspecta -- the oldest and most distinguished student-edited, university-based American architecture journal -- examines the inner workings of fame as it relates to architecture though media and culture. It looks at how the commodification of architecture affects the design process -- whether fame emphasizes all the wrong aspects of architecture or provides the only way an architect can produce truly ambitious projects. How does architecture generate fame? And how does fame generate architecture?
Celebrity permeates all levels of contemporary society; architecture, academia, the architectural press, and the mainstream media all play a role in promoting the mystique of the designer genius. The tradition of learning through apprenticeship and the struggle to have projects commissioned and built perpetuate the importance of the famous architect. Does this serve architecture or only the architectural star? The contributors to Perspecta examine both sides of the argument: Architecture moves forward through a process of innovation; fame provides the architect with the leverage needed to accomplish innovation. Or is it that fame, because of its relationship to the media and popular tastes, inevitably dilutes the quality of the architecture? Does "famous" architecture glorify only itself and neglect the people, the values, and the functions that it must serve?

Out of Date.......2006-06-06
Hard to believe this book's still in print. The author apparently died before the book was published in 1991, and it badly needs updating as the MF camera information dates from that era. Nothing on recent MF cameras, digital, Russian Kievs, etc.
It's pretty light in the information department as well. A casual review of camera models and the author's use of a few of them on a trip here and there do not make for an intensive education in the field of medium-format photography.
Medicore.......2003-02-09
Between digital and lack of acknowledgement of Soviet equipment I found this book medicore in the classes I taught. Wish I'd saved the money for a new camera
Not too bad, but very good for beginners.......2001-10-17
Lief Ericksenn has created an interesting introduction to the medium format field. Many of his pictures are excellent - especially those centering around the space program. The text is a little light, possibly designed for a beginner like myself. Still, there is a great deal of information about composition, darkroom and manufacturers. Perhaps an update to the text is in order. However, considering the number of books written on the subject, I would consider this a must-have for those interested in MF photography.
An initial look at Medium Format.......2001-06-24
This is a good reference and primer for those wishing to explore the medium format world of photography. The logic and language of Ericksenn is easy to read and understand. It is obvious from his work shown, that he is a professional and earnest about this topic. Most serious photographers would not find this text challenging or "new" enough, but a novice may. Some helpful references are the scenics pictured, taken with different lenses and film sizes to demonstrate perspectives etc. Most of the information about the cameras discussed is basically correct, but much of it is dated as of this writing. Some brands of equipment are largely ignored. I found this book "okay", but then I have been deep into this hobby for decades.
Don't buy this book if you need real information!.......2000-04-21
While this book boasts excellent print qualities, along with top notch photo reproduction, it lacks any real information of substance. If you are looking for a book to help you learn the ins and outs of medium format, keep looking. It will not help you with the intricacies of lighting, composing for medium format vs. 35mm, or any other "important" information for the neophyte medium format photographer. I was looking for this type of book, and I was sorely disappointed after reading this title in one evening. Please Mr. Ericksenn, try again.

Medium Format Photography/a User's Guide to Equipment and Applications
ASIN: 1584280425 |
Book Description
Medium format cameras, which use a larger negative than 35mm cameras, are the tools of choice for most professional photographers. In this guide, the techniques that make medium format photography so popular with professionals are explained in language that even hobbyists can easily understand. All aspects of medium format photography are explored, including equipment selection, composition techniques, and the differences in images produced by single lens reflex and twin lens reflex medium format cameras. This is a great resource for beginners as well as those who wish to improve their medium format photography.
Customer Reviews:
Absolute beginners book.......2005-10-07
I bought this book because I was a serious 35mm amateur photographer who wanted to move into medium format because of the increased quality. I was totally ignorant of the basics of medium format, such as the difference between 120 and 220, so anything I read was helpful. I agree that this is a book for absolute beginners. If you are interested in camera models and history and want a book to add to your photographic library in this category, then you will find this book useful. I really wanted a book with more artistic content, such as extensive discussion of composition in various medium formats, especially 6x6, but was disappointed. In hindsight, I would not buy this book. One would be better to study books of photographs by outstanding medium format photographers in order to enhance understanding of the creative aspects of the medium.
Very informative for a novice........2001-09-08
I read this book because I wanted to move from 35mm to medium format but had no knowledge of or background in it. I really found this book to be helpful to me. It explained the very basics of medium format, cameras, TLR, accessories, metering, etc. very clearly and in terms I could understand. For someone who doesn't have a clue and wants to learn more it really is a great book to begin with. I agree that anyone with a working knowledge of medium format would look for something more advanced, but, for the novice it's perfect.
a book for beginers in medium format.......2001-08-24
I've found the book is writen in a very simple terms. For beginers can be useful, but if you are not a beginer, you won't learn much thinks reading it. As a conclusion, if you want to buy a medium format camera and you don't know anything about it, you can buy this book, but if you are not a beginner, don't spend your money with this book.

Creating World-Class Photography: How Any Photographer Can Create Technically Flawless Photographs

Book Description
Learn the advantages and capabilities of medium-format cameras and examine all aspects of medium-format operations, including SLR, twin lens, panoramic, rangefinder, wide angle, press, and view cameras. Also explained and illustrated are lenses and their accessories, motor drives, films, flashes, filters, slides and slide projectors, and more. Includes black and white and color photographs and drawings to illustrate proper use of equipment and various techniques, effects, and possibilities that produce successful photographs with the best possible image quality.
The medium format is truly the format in the middle. It combines many of the benefits of 35 mm photography with those of the large format, making a medium format system an excellent choice for almost all types of photography from candid action with a hand-held camera to critical studio work from a tripod. Special chapters are devoted to these different applications and the type of equipment that most likely meets your photography needs. This book explains clearly the medium format's benefits, advantages, and disadvantages and provides a comparison of the medium format to other formats so you can decide whether it is right for you and your photography.
*The definitive book on medium format, cameras and technique, the most commonly used format of commercial photography
*New material on panoramic format, apochromatic lenses, aspheric lenses, tele extenders, glass and relative illumination, and motor drives
*Updated information on perspective control, tilt controls, built in metering systems, and use of apertures.
Customer Reviews:
Wildi is conservative but makes his point.......2001-06-24
I am a big Ernst Wildi fan! That said, some observations should be noted: Wildi writes lucidly, logically, and tries to teach the reader in every one of his works. His photography is excellent and he really does not hide the fact he is a Hasselblad guru! Perhaps, he assumes that some of his points that are written and diagrammed to demonstrate, are obvious to all readers, and does not go into great depth. Yes, I got it! People wanting more from Ernst on techniques should check out his book, "Achieving the Ultimate Image." These 2 works could have been combined into one; re-titled "The Ultimate Image in Medium Format" or similar.
More focus on Medium Format please!.......1999-08-15
Ernst Wildi's book was quite a disappointment to me, as the title made me believe, that it would be a competent appraisal of the different formats and a recommandation of fields of photography where the size of medium format would win the game. But after a couple of chapters concerned with different formats, cropping and camera types the rest is just an ordinary photography primer with really no news. Additionally the illustrations are often handdrawn and really not of the quality you would expect to find in a book like this.
I feel seriously misguided by the title and wonder if I dare order the other wellknown Ernst Wildi title on a specific medium format brand...

Is nothing sacred? Not to John Callahan, about whom "The Far Side" creator Gary Larson says, "There are two basic reasons I enjoy Callahan's work so much: first, I think his cartoons are just plain funny; second, he makes my own work seem normal." Callahan does a number on canines in his book Get Down!! Dog Cartoons. He's also the author of a memoir that stands tall in American literature: Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot, which tells the story of how he got drunk, crashed his VW, became a quadriplegic, and won fame as a writer and cartoonist. He has no shame, no self-pity, and no respect for any shibboleth. Find out why Jonathan Kellerman, Richard Pryor, and pretty much anybody who discovers him is a lifelong Callahan fan. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
There is absolutely nothing funny about a quadriplegic in a wheel chair. Unless, of course, that person is John Callahan. For nearly a decade this politically incorrect, brutally frank, and wickedly hilarious cartoonist has shocked America with his own special brand of dark, edgy humor. In the world of John Callahan, nothing is sacred, nothing is taboo, and nothing is funnier!
Customer Reviews:
Woof.......2002-09-10
I bought this book because Callahan is one of my favorite cartoonists. He has a razor wit and creative bent unique in our time. However, this book is merely a retrospective of the development of Callahan's art over the years (I'm assuming; the panels are undated). Many of the early pages are useless as humor; their only value is for an academic or a family friend. Many of the drawings are crude (early career?), and many of the concepts are repeated or are just not enlightening as humor. I was hoping for a collection of his finest work. Digested and passed in twenty minutes. Woof.
If you like The Onion you'll love this book.......2002-05-29
If you are not afraid of humor at its darkest, sickest, strangest and certainly most un-politically correct you'll love this book. These cartoons reminds me of Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Animation Festival. It's also nice to see a Callahan book with a theme (Dogs). On the other hand if you like your humor simple & sweet I suggest you stay with Family Circles.

"IMP" gets her due.......2007-07-28
In 1943, belief in what we today would call libertarianism was at its ebb. Collectivism, in the form of bolshevism, fascism or even the non-totalitarian movements of socialism and New Deal liberalism, seemed to be the order of the day. Individualist anarchist Albert Jay Nock was in such despair, that year he published his autobiography under the title Memoirs of a Superfluous Man.
Yet also in 1943, a counterattack began in the guise of three books written by three different women. Two of those women, Ayn Rand and Rose Wilder Lane, are better remembered today, Rand as the founder of Objectivism and Lane as the editor (and possible author) of the Little House Series of books and of her our books of life on the frontier.
But in terms of formulating the freedom philosophy, the third woman, Isabel Paterson, less well today, was probably the most important. Paterson was born in humble circumstances in the middle of Lake Huron. A Canadian by birth, her somewhat shiftless father moved several times along the American and Canadian west.
Though she had little formal schooling, Paterson was a voracious reader and taught herself what she missed at school. Despite the lack of formal education, she ended up working in newspapers, initially along the west coast of the US and Canada (one of her bosses ended up as Prime Minster of Canada). By 1925, she was an editor for the influential "Books" supplement to the New York Herald Tribune, somewhat mischievously signing her "Bookworm" columns with the initials I.M.P. Along the way, she managed to write a few books of her own, briefly hold the altitude record for a woman in an airplane (though a passenger) and marry and quickly discard a husband (who she never seems to have divorced).
Professor Cox really has a feel for his subject. He does lose some objectivity as he is quite taken in by her. But he is willing to show her negative points. Paterson comes across as intelligent and gifted, a self taught intellectual, but as someone who was difficult to get along with. She had a tendency to break friendships over ideological grounds. Yet she also found friendship with her immigrant neighbors.
The book is well written and researched and while the last few chapters, detailing Paterson's retirement and decline in health drag a bi, it is understandable as her earlier life was so interesting. Paterson's importance in American political history cannot be understated. Paterson's 1943 book, "The God of the Machine" would help Rand formulate her philosophical system. Paterson also corresponded with Russell Kirk and worked for William F. Buckley. Those three, who would help shape the philosophical battles in post World War II America, each got something different from Paterson, and in turn, influenced American political discourse.
So why is Paterson not well known? Professor Cox provides the answer - Paterson was "a committee of one". Rand had Objectivism, Lane had the Freedom School, Hayek and von Mises their academic activities, Friedman his web of like minded academics and the ear of presidents. Paterson had her column and her novels. Cox notes that she resisted calls to teach at the Freedom School, and she had a tendency to drop her friendships (such as breaking off relations with Rand and Lane).
Cox's book rights a great wrong and hopefully puts Isabel Paterson back into prominence. Anyone interested in the roots of the modern conservative and libertarian movements should read it.
Isabel Paterson's America.......2004-10-31
Those who known the name Isabel Paterson probably know her from her outstanding 1943 work THE GOD OF THE MACHINE. That work, as Prof. Stephen Cox noted in his 1993 introduction, is "one of the few original theories of history that have been developed in America."
Paterson was also a successful novelist and one of the most important columnists and book reviewers of her time. Her life also intersected with many of the most important thinkers in the libertarian and conservative individualist tradition, including Ayn Rand, Russell Kirk, Whittaker Chambers, William Buckley, and H. L. Mencken. Certainly Paterson deserves a full-scale biography and Prof. Cox has filled this gap with this admirable work.
Paterson is also well known for her influence on Ayn Rand. Prof. Cox sheds new light on their relationship. Paterson was a compulsive reader, particularly in history and politics. Rand, on the other hand, appears to have read little in this area. Rand would talk to Paterson for hours at a time, and many of Rand's ideas flowed from what she learned from her. They were both strong-willed and difficult people and their relationship began to show strains when Rand accused Paterson of using some of her own ideas without credit. (Rand had an exaggerated sense of her own originality.) In 1948, Paterson said something offensive to Rand and their relationship came to an end. To Rand's credit, she continued to recommend THE GOD OF THE MACHINE.
This book is something of a "life and times" biography of Paterson. There is much of interest concerning the politics of the time, the New York publishing scene, the nascent libertarian movement and the like. Unfortunately, only THE GOD OF THE MACHINE remains in print and it doesn't appear that an anthology of Paterson's non-fiction writing was ever produced. Hopefully Prof. Cox or someone else will remedy this situation.
An original and brilliant libertarian woman.......2004-10-25
I really enjoyed reading this biography of Isabel Paterson, mostly I suppose because she is a fellow traveler to me. An American living from 18861960, Paterson was a libertarian intellectual who lived mostly alone in a world which did not understand. She is best known today for her book about the source of America's greatness, The God of the Machine, but she was also a famous literary critic and a novelist. What makes Paterson special to me, her political values, will probably cause most people to dismiss her.
Stephen Cox gives a good deal of information about the life, relationships, and character of this woman. But, as a bonus, along the way the reader also gets short introductions to many other important people who Paterson knew. These include Ayn Rand, Rose Wilder Lane, John Chamberlain, Leonard Read, William F. Buckley, Herbert Hoover, and many more. The interactions with Rand are especially interesting because Rand achieved surpassing fame as a novelist and movement leader. Rand admired and learned from Paterson, who was 19 years older. On many occasions they sat up and talked most of the night.
The reader of this biography gets a good review of each of Paterson's novels, a few of which show characters much like Paterson herself. From having read a few of her novels, I would have guessed the author was considerate, polite, and feminine a welcome contrast to Ayn Rand. But the reader of this biography learns that Paterson was routinely rude and ill mannered, and like Rand she broke off many relationships in cold ideological rejection.
Probably this book should be called scholarly; it has lots of footnotes. It seems carefully edited and produced. I noticed only one typo.

From Peddie, Appleyard, and Shepherd to Wee Hughie Gallacher, Albert Stubbins, Jackie Milburn, Wyn Davies, and Malcolm Macdonald, as well as modern-day icons such as Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, and Alan Shearer, they have been a mixed bunch. Some have been masterful in the air, while several struck the ball with terrific power; others have possessed the art of placement and, a few, the ultimate poacher's instinct in front of goal. But all had the same mission: to score goals. And whatever their style, if they donned the center-forward shirt for Newcastle United, they were treated as gods. Shirt of Legends is about all of those players—the many different characters and personalities in the center-forward role who have worn Newcastle United's No. 9 shirt since its introduction in 1939.

HEAVEN FOR FANS OF THE TOON.......2006-02-24
I'm keen to review as many Newcastle writers and Newcastle themed books, I've been once or twice to the city and it's something special. This one has to be in there.
A nostalgic look at the heroes we have cheered on from the terraces of St James's.
Jackie Milburn, Shearer, Macdonald, Hughie Gallagher, they're all there. A must for all Newcastle fans.

Shearer's 4 star story.......2000-10-09
A book explaining the life of such an incredible player HAD to be interesting, no matter how poorly written, and even if it was in another languege. Luckily, this is very well written and very interesting. And most importantly, its in English. It tells you lots of interesting facts, and tells about his most important achievements, plus some humorous stories. It jumps around a bit, but explains from childhood to just about now, and is well worth reading!
