Book Description
When we think of the gardens of Southern California, we tend to think of the enormous semiarid landscapes of the Huntington and Rancho Los Alamitos, often built on the sprawling grounds of former ranches. But there is another garden tradition in Southern California: the modest, rectangular suburban plots designed by the most famous architects of mid-century modernism: Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Gregory Ain, Raphael Soriano, Harwell Hamilton Harris, A. Quincy Jones, and John Lautner. These architects saw the garden as an outdoor extension of the space of the houses they designed, rather than a neo-Spanish fantasy to be added later by a "landscapist." Their modern gardens made use of low-maintenance, drought-resistant plants, and made room for informal outdoor living by children and adults with an emphasis on recreation and exercise.
The first book of its kind, Private Landscapes profiles twenty significant gardens-and their accompanying houses-by these celebrated architects. Using contemporary photographs by Julius Shulman and newly commissioned color images, along with plans and plant lists, Private Landscapes provides a never-before-seen look at these gardens. As beautiful and practical now as they were 50 years ago, these designs continue to provide inspiration for gardeners and designers everywhere.

Surprising Depth of Information.......2006-05-08
Although this is mostly a coffee-table book (great pictures and original & later landscaping plans), it does give an unexpectedly generous amount of historical background on the modernist architectural movement in Southern California.
It also focuses on specific examples of modernist houses and gives the background on the thought process of the architects and landscape designers, how they designed the houses and landscapes in relation to the lots and surrounding areas.
I think the best part of this book is how it juxtaposes pictures and plans of each house from the past and how they look in the present day. Thus, you can get an immediate sense of how well the designs have held up over time. Some of it looks dated, but much of it remains relevant (especially with the resurgent interest in mid-century design). Also, you get to see how some of the houses were revised by later architects and designers. You get to see how the original plants have aged as well.
I borrowed this from the library, but I may end up buying it.
Private Landscapes: Modernist Gardens in Southern California.......2003-06-08
Kathryn Smith's erudite introduction and the authors' texts add historical resonance to this enticing collection of new and original gardens (including several by Burton) that set off classic houses by Schindler, Neutra, Soriano, and Quincy Jones. The plans and photographs are reminders of how Garrett Eckbo and others led the way in integrating modern architecture with landscape, inspired by Neutra's vision of the house as "a machine in the garden." (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
Book Description
Artists and others who appreciate sublime depictions of the natural world will relish this contemporary exploration of what constitutes the poetic in landscape painting today. The luminous, richly rendered paintings that grace these pages all illustrate the book's fresh, timely approach that landscape painting represents a source of emotional and spiritual well-being, a fitting antidote to the hectic alienation of modern life, both for the artist who creates the work and the viewers who derive pleasure from looking at it. The author proposes that through his or her imagination, intellect, and feelings, an artist can evoke an emotional response in the viewer by the arrangement of the landscape's natural elements. In thoughtful examinations of her paintings, the author analyzes their color, time of day, season of year, climate and atmosphere, and the more elusive qualities that define this genre: a sense of place recognition and grace of line. The book is full of fresh insights that will enhance landscape painting for years to come.

Study the pictures, forget the essays.......2003-07-31
Ms. Mowry is a talented artist, with great finesse in shaping dramatic landscapes. This book is filled with fine, instructive examples of her work. She does tend to get carried away, though, as she writes about the significance of Art, and Life, and Stuff. All that palaver tends to wear thin after awhile. But the pictures are well worth studying.

A Beautiful Book...............2002-06-07
I found that this book was one of the best art books that I have read in a long time.Ms. Mowry's insights into the poetic landscape will stay with you .Though I do not work in pastels I found that the ideas expressed by the author will be of insight to all artists regardless of medium used. The paintings illustrated are beautifull and express the meaning of the poetic landscape. This is a great book for artists looking to make thier own statement. If you do not paint this book will be of help in appreciating art and it may make you want to start painting!I strongly recommend this book to landscape painters and anyone who appreciates fine art.It will become one of your most read books.
Sublime.......2001-11-12
I became lost in this book. Better than any "how-to" book on painting landscapes, Ms. Mowry opens ones mind to the poetry and philosophy of creating great art. The time spent reading this book is like attending a very, very good workshop where one learns to paint with his or her heart. And even if you never read the first word of this book, it's worth owning for the exquisite reproductions of Ms. Mowry's landscapes.

A compelling argument for vacationing in Maui.......2006-07-21
Hawaii is one of the few of the fifty United States that I have not visited. This book of photographs, collected to commemorate the Maui News' 85th anniversary, is enough to convince me that I should go there soon. The pictures are stunning in their beauty; it truly appears to be an island paradise. You see tropical forests, pristine beaches, sugarcane fields, modern buildings, old buildings returned to their original states, beautiful tracts of ocean, fields of flowers, and beautiful people. Some of the people are doing Hawaiian activities such as surfing, snorkeling and sailing. Others are doing tourist-like activities such as playing tennis, golf, sitting or laying on the beach or walking down the street taking in the sights.
I don't know if the designers intended to create a tourist brochure, but they certainly succeeded in doing so. This is one of the most convincing arguments for visiting a place that I have ever seen.
Maui On My Mind.......2004-01-05
This book captures all of the wonder and beauty of Maui! The artwork and photo on the dustjacket of this book makes it wonderful to display on your coffee table. Once you open this book you will want to look and read through it in one sitting. If you have never been to the Hawaiian Islands this book will definitely make you start to dream of those tropical islands and those shimmering beaches. From the top of Haleakala to the road to Hana this book has it all.
Maui On My Mind.......2001-05-21
Beautiful book full of georgous photos, excellent narritives of the Island of Maui. Pretty much covers all the different areas of Maui. We read it before we went to Maui for the first time and used it as a travel guide of places we wanted to see while we were there. Couldn't resist reading it again after we got home! I'll never part with my copy of this outstanding book!
Maui on My Mind.......2000-08-12
This book is the perfect example of the beautiful natural scenery and vacationing actvities that Maui has to offer, without getting commercial or advertising. The pictures are a beautiful descriptions themselves and each page provides a brief explanation of it. I also like the way the book is divided up into the main geographical areas of Maui and how it provides a bit of history of these areas. I didn't purchase any other souvenirs from Maui, but this book since it this was the perfect keepsake for me. I praise Rita Ariyoshi the author for bringing back to me such beautiful memories of Maui back to life and full color. This book brought on such nostalgia, that I vow to return to Maui someday and make this paradise displayed in the Maui on My Mind, my home. Mahalo...

Amazing Agent Luna is the story of Luna, the perfect secret agent. A girl grown in a lab from the finest genetic material, she has been trained since her birth fifteen years ago to be the U.S. government's ultimate espionage weapon. But now she is given an assignment that will test her abilities to the utmost - high school. In order to uncover an evil plot, the government sends Luna to a prominent high school to pose as a student. But the one thing Luna has not been trained to handle is her own feelings. They are powerful and out of control, like your average teen, but without parents or the usual interaction with her peers to guide her. Putting her in high school is lighting the fuse on an emotional bomb of adolescent confusion. Especially when she starts making friends, creating rivals, and having her first big crush on bad boy Jonah, the son of her arch-nemesis, Count Von Brucken! This publisher is a new client to Diamond Book Distributors!
Customer Reviews:
One of the best Mangas I've read!! :).......2007-04-18
I love this manga it is so great. I think it is new and refreshing to acctually have a villian who is funny! IF you read the Manga closley you can tell that Luna works for America. I wonder what will happen next.
AMAZING AGENTS AND INNOCENT VILLAINS.......2006-07-22
Count Heinrich Von Brucken is the leader of the rogue nation of Bruckenstein and he's not a very nice guy, even though we get no information on what evil he has committed to warrant the role of villain in this series. Nothing is told about how he treats his people or the bad things he's done to the world. We just have to go by the author's word that he's bad. Anyway, when 15-year-old genetically engineered super agent Luna breaks into his embassy she finds out about a secret plan called "Project Scion" which Brucken just happens to keep lying around on his desk for even his maids to see! The content of the files points to something shady going on at Nobel High School, where the sons and daughters of diplomats, scientists, and world leaders get an elite education. Luna is sent in undercover as a student, with her handler, "Control", and her shrink Dr. Collins posing as her parents. Having been raised in isolation and with no contact with anyone of her age group, she finds making friends and adjusting to school is harder than she thought. And what is going to happen when Baron Brucken's son, Jonah, enrolls at the school?
Amazing Agent Luna is the first manga I have read from the publisher Seven Seas, and boy, did it stink! It is a horrible mockery and pale imitation of Japanese manga. First, the art. Instead of using shading in her drawings, Shiei sticks almost exclusively to using pre-rendered dotted patterns which marks a lazy drawer in my mind. It became very annoying after a while because it showed the artist didn't want to take the time to give it a professional look. A lot of the female characters look EXACTLY alike except for headband. The character designs were just completely lacking and you got the feeling like you were looking at some of your dead relatives. There was just no soul underneath. The story too was awful. It was the worst blend of cliches I have ever experienced. Again, there is no evidence Brucken is evil. We are basically given no info as to who Luna and her handlers are working for. For that matter, we don't even know where this story is taking place. It seems like a Japanese type school, but again it seems a mock-up like the Truman Show. Maybe that's what this is all about. This manga doesn't even really exist and I could look behind the back cover and see wooden boards supporting it. Another mark against it was that it lacked humor. Maybe once every 50 pages or so, you would laugh, but it needed more. I have no idea how this book got published. Steer clear from this book, a "world manga" gone bad.
I love this!.......2005-04-16
The big thing has to be the artwork. I actually got to talk to Shiei! According to her, she had to work really hard to draw it all on a deadline.
The storyline is so alluring, I even fell in love with Oliver!
As It Says.... AMAZING!!.......2005-04-03
At first, even despite the beautiful artwork, I rolled my eyes. "Oh, great, another 'girly secret agent' manga." I thought. And, well, it kinda' is. But it's also more than that!
I found the characters cute and believable, the story one that you don't want to put down, and (as I mentioned before) the artwork gorgeous.
Yes, some of it is a tad silly and unrealistic--but what secret agent story usually isn't? Besides, all it's good qualities far outweigh the bad.
Sweet; a charming series, and a book you definatly want to add to your collection.

"One of the 25 most important Chicagoans of the century."-Chicago Magazine
"Through the years my family filled many of his columns, some critical and some supportive. But whether you agreed with him or not, you had to respect his honesty and his love for the city. No one captured Chicago like Mike Royko, and his many fans will savor this book capturing his colorful life."-Mayor Richard M. Daley
This illustrated biography is the first account of the colorful life of Chicago newspaper columnist Mike Royko, Pulitzer Prize winner, best-selling author, and legendary journalist who personified Chicago in all its rough-edged charm. Drawing on exclusive photos and interviews with Royko's family and intimates, the book chronicles Royko's rise from a "flat-above-a-tavern" youth-raised above a bar on Chicago's Polish northwest side-to one of the best-known names in American journalism.
Readers will get the inside scoop on Royko's epic battles with Mayor Richard J. Daley and other politicians and his hilarious columns featuring "Slats Grobnik." They'll also meet a softer, largely unknown, side of Royko, through the love letters he sent to his wife-to-be from an Air Force base in Washington State.
More than 100 photos-many never before available to the public-capture the man and his times. Millions of readers-in 800 newspapers around the world-followed Royko's work and life. In The World of Mike Royko-he lives again.
If you ever wanted to sit on a bar stool at the Billy Goat Tavern next to Royko, now you can.
Customer Reviews:
OK book, decent biography of Mike Royko.......2000-12-18
The book gives glimpses of his personal life, his upbringing, along with his professional life as a journalist for the Daily News, Sun Times, and finally the Tribune. I have read the Tribune for many years but never did read Royko's columns. I read this book to get an idea of why he was such a revered journalist.
I found that the book had some great stories in it and overall it was an enjoyable read, but I did not emerge as impressed with Mike Royko as I thought I would be. A good book for a nice overview for someone trying to figure who Mike Royko was. If you are not interested in learning about Royko this book will bore you out of your mind.
Slats when we need him the most........1999-12-30
My oldest son,now in his thirties, greatly suprised me earlier this year when he responded to my question of what book had the most impact on him when he was growing up.He said it was more than just a book;it was the columns of Mike Royko, particularly those describing the views of Slats Grubnick."They countered all the dining room table"liberalisms"you and mom always were urging on me".While Slats and his creator,Royko, are no longer with us to directly influence my son's son on a regular basis, they are brilliantly brought back to life in this loving and honest book by Madison newspaper columnist,Doug Moe.I don't recall reading if Moe ever met Royko in person, but in this absolutely enjoyable gem, written with the cooperation of Royko's family and cohorts,Moe writes with an authority and wisdom that The Great Royko himself would love.See for yourself! As for me,I'm planning atrip to The Billy Goat tavern where I plan to hoist a few:to Slats,Royko, and Doug Moe.Thanks for the memories and inspiration.
It's about time.................1999-12-26
This book is a wonderful look at one of the great journalists of the 20th century. Whether you are a long time fan of Royko or are just curious about who he was and why his writing had such an impact on readers, you are in for a great read. The photos and text work very well together as Doug Moe masterfully takes you from the humble beginnings of Royko's life down through the years to his final days as the most syndicated columnist in America. Royko's story is fascinating. He was not your typical journalism school product since he, in fact, never went to journalism school. He was a self-taught, street-smart genius who learned his craft while on the job. As this book makes clear, he quickly mastered the fundamentals of sound journalism and then went on for decades entertaining and informing us all with his great writing. The book covers the highlights as well as some of the intriguing details of how it all unfolded. I recommend you read it and pass it on to a good friend.
Good, but also left me wanting much more.......1999-11-26
This is far from a comprehensive biography, but still supplies a lot of information that I was always curious about. The pictures alone are priceless. Perhaps some day Studs Terkel or Bill Grainger will write the definitive Royko bio. But for now, those of us who dearly miss Mike's face on Page 3 of The Trib will have to be content with this.
Excellent - captures the flavor of Royko & Chicago.......1999-11-19
Like millions of others, I followed the columns (read: exploits) of Mike Royko when he was in the Chicago newspapers. Doug Moe's biography serves his subject well in lean, workmanlike prose, capturing the flavor of the Chicago streets and neighborhoods as well as the man himself. Moe brings it alive so you can almost feel the ink smudges on newsprint and smell the Old Style in the corner bars in the dim light of winter nights. Photos and anecdotes complement the narrative, which Moe relates with his usual straightforward understated virtuosity (in other words, no sentences like this one), compelling the reader to turn the page to see what is going to happen next. Indispensable reading for anyone who wants to learn more about Royko, the writing life, newspapering, and a certain now-vanished and legendary era in Chicago journalism. The book fills a welcome niche on the bookshelf.

In this comprehensive study, Professor Tappy rounds out the study of the Iron Age strata at Samaria that he began with the first volume of this work, published in 1992 (The Early Iron Age through the Ninth Century, HSS 44). Tappy's goal is to provide a thorough-going analysis of prior archaeologists' work at this important north Israelite site, with a view to providing a complete reconstruction of the depositional history of the site during the Iron Age. The two volumes together are important, not only for the history of the city of Samaria, but for the archaeological sequences of the Iron Age in northern Israel.

harley 2.......2002-12-14
Terrible. No theme to follow. There doesn't seem to be a story of any kind that we could follow. Is this supposed to be a mystery, suspense, xxx rated or what? It also skips from one scene to another and really lacks common decency
Bittersweet with characters that matter.......2002-10-29
A bittersweet ending that brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. This is a story of triumph over adversity. The intermingled descriptions of the seasons and the countryside will be recognized by mid-westerners. The author skillfully paints the picture of life in an immoral orphanage and leads you into the adult lives of some of these orphans. It is a book you want to keep reading because the characters are real, they matter. You want to know what happens to them. I did not want to put the book down!
A riveting story.......2002-10-16
The simple title of this book is misleading in that it doesn't convey the masterful story around characters in a midwestern town.Riveting descriptions of characters you actually CARE about abound in this book as well as every human condition...sex, pathos, humor, irony, it's all here...it reminds me of the great plots of Charles Dickens mixed in with the details and descriptive style of Michener. I wish this would be made into a movie!
