Book Description
One of the most influential landscape and garden designers of the twentieth century, Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1993) has inspired generations of gardens around the world. His sweeping forms and painterly approach to planting were revolutionary when they first came to public attention in the 1930s, and many contemporary designs today owe his vision a great debt.
Born in Såo Paulo, Brazil, the son of German emigrants, Burle Marx studied painting in Rio de Janeiro, an aspect of his work that persisted throughout his career. Drawing on his masterly knowledge of Brazil's rich tropical plants, his fine-art training, and his love of music and sculpture, he began with private landscape commissions before his work caught the eye of architects Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. With them, Burle Marx created some of his most memorable works in Brasilia and elsewhere around Brazil. His later commissions included numerous parks, private institutions, and his own residence, the magical El Jardin de las Maravillas--The Garden of Wonders.
Publications on Burle Marx have been few, despite his world renown. This book is the first major publication in a decade. Before his death, the author worked closely with Burle Marx during the writing of this book, and gained unique insight into the life, ideas, and work that are outlined in the introduction. The core of the book is twenty-six projects, presented through plans--some redrawn from Marx's now vanished or ruined originals--specially commissioned photographs, planting schemes, and some of Burle Marx's own paintings. An extensive reference section includes an exhaustive chronology and bibliography.
At a time when landscape design is more lively and influential than ever, this tribute to an acknowledged master of modern design is destined to inspire gardens and landscape design for years to come.

This is a beauteful book about the life and work of this very important Landscape Architect. I am pleased to have it in my Collection.
Book Description
As Joseph Zbukvic explains, in order to set the mood in a composition, artists need to set their clocks--their watercolor clocks, that is. The watercolor clock is a simple, but ingenious teaching device Zbukvic created to show artists how to manipulate watercolor materials for dazzling, atmospheric effects.
The "clock" accompanies every visual example in this book, helping artists anticipate how the condition of the paper (wet, dry, moderate, etc.) will react to various watercolor mixes. Based on this teaching principle, Zbukvic guides artists through step-by-step demonstrations that clearly illustrate how to: identify a subject; plan a painting; control color and value; manipulate edges; add the right finishing touches.
With this book, artists can achieve a greater level of mastery with watercolor and deeper, richer paintings.
Customer Reviews:
Full of Inspiration.......2007-01-23
This is one of the best books available on watercolor painting. I consider it on par with Ong Kim Seng's book on painting light and shade by the same publisher. Mr. Zbukvic's painting are not only stunning and inspiring, but full of joy. He offers plenty of demonstration and examples in his book, along with explanations of his techniques and thought processes behind each painting shown in the book. Highly recommended for an intermediate painter.
An absolutely stunning book!.......2005-10-08
This book was far beyond what I expected. It is filled with photos, lots of instruction, the images are beautiful. Zbukvic very definitely does capture atmosphere. In his demonstrations, he'll often tackle a subject from three different perspectives or in different lightings. This is especially helpful if you are trying to make changes in your own painting but are not quite sure how to go about it. The artist admits that he doesn't particularly like green and downplays that in his paintings. This was reassuring since it is also my least favorite color and I was fascinated by the way he worked around it. The only tiny drawback I could see in this book is that Zbukvic is almost TOO facile, too good, but this might just be thought of as having a developed style. I would definitely recommend this book for new artists and experienced ones.
Excellent for Intermediate to Advanced Watercolorists.......2005-07-22
Zbukvic is a rising star in the world of watercolor. His art is magnificent! The cost of this book is worth it if it were only to have a coffee table collection of his art. However, I found this book to be extremely well-written and effective instructionally. The main thrust of the book is to examine the variances in watercolor application as it relates to the degrees of paper wetness and paint dilution. Using practical terms that demonstrate those consistencies, Zbukvic systematically instructs the student as to the instances in which each combination should be utitlized. I LOVE the fact that he does not bog down the experienced watercolorist with the token chapters on "Watercolor 101" skills. He does share his palette choices and typical technique pitfalls, but primarily sets right out into his technique demonstrations. The text is very interesting, unlike most watercolor books I have in my library. The only disappointment I had with the book is that, after reading it, I still don't paint like him! LOL!
Addressing another reviewer who criticized the book for using Australianisms like the word "tyre" and for supposedly mislabling a large painting with smaller dimensions, I would like to refute both of those assertions. The word "tyre" is the only Australianism I saw. There may be others, but it is most certainly not to the point of distraction. Also, if you will read the text beside the photo described as mislabled, it clearly explains that the smaller painting served as the springboard for the larger class demonstration in the other photos. The only slight criticism I have of the book is that much of the text is written in a light gray color which was difficult to read in the evenings under lamplight.
simply and comprehensable.......2005-03-11
This man really knows how to create stunning images! This book won't confuse you with long chapters on color theory. What you will get from this book instead - is a firm grisp of how much watercolor pigment to use on what kind of surface (dry, moist, wet, damp) and what effect this achieves. I think this book is worth every penny.
Do you want to understand how to be a better painter?.......2004-08-04
This book has been waiting for you. You will learn how to "look", how to "see", how to paint! If painting atmosphere on your paper is your goal, this is the book for you. The water clock is an easy to grasp concept for experienced painters. It provides a kind of time line for your work in progress. There are step by step illustrations that keep you informed of all the conditions as the author demonstrates his complete control of the medium. Any watercolor student should buy this beautifully illustrated book for their library.

Try to find something else.......2004-10-02
I have bought and used many Visual Quickstart Guides and they have always been great when getting started with something new. However, Final Cut Express 2 for Mac OS X is an exception.
Instead of explaining a sample project and then taking you step by step so you can get your feet wet, Lisa Brenneis instead decides it is more valuable to explain each item on each pulldown menu: whether you will need it or not.
She discusses in excruciating detail the various ways to save a project and how to open previous projects whose files have been misplaced, etc...without ever mentioning how to start a new project. In Chapter 3 she explains how to make a 'Custom Shortcut Button.' That's nice, but since she doesn't explain how to get video IN to FCE2 until Chapter 6, I have no idea what I would want to create a custom shortcut button for.
The first couple of chapters were full of so many details with no hands on experience or practical explaination...I was asking myself: "where's the quickstart?" oh...that doesn't come until page 145.
In Chapter 2:
"To restore a project:
1. Choose File>Restore Project
2. In the Restore Projects dialog box's pop-up menu, select the archived project you want to restore
3. Click Restore"
DUH!
Now at this point, reading from the beginning of the book, I have no idea what restoring a project means, why I would want to do it, nor do I even have a project to restore!
I sat for a few hours with this book and a simple video project I wanted to complete in FCE2 and instead of getting some good experience and information, I decided a better use of time would be to come here and write this negative review. Afterward, I am going to work on the project in iMovie; possibly tomorrow I'll look for another book and try again.
Visual Quickstart Guides are usually great, but this book is NOT like the rest.
Do yourself a favor, find yourself something else. But if you still really want this book, send me a message, I'm selling mine.

Product Description
When Jim Brannigan's uncle commits suicide, Jim suddenly finds himself the owner of a failing stud ranch at the age of nineteen. His uncle's old Indian friend, Grey Dog, as well as his loyal ranch hands, help him pull it back from the brink.
Jim's abilities are tested time and time again. The young man with a natural way with horses finds himself having to struggle against horrific storms, treachery and death in his goal to somehow fulfil his uncle's dream of breeding the fastest horse in the land. His life is enriched when he falls in love with the charming young daughter of his new foreman.
Up on the mountain above Jim's ranch stands a beautiful wild stallion. He stares down remembering the torment and brutality he suffered at the hands of humans.
His name is Ghost and he has developed a taste for raiding horse ranches. He steals the mares to enlarge his herd. Ghost is the cause of tragedy at the Brannigan ranch after stealing their prized black filly, Ebony Wind.
The union between them produces Blue Taboo, who was born during a terrifyingly violent storm. The trauma of his birth mysteriously leaves the huge colt with strange electrifying powers.
The lives of the young man on the ranch and the wild blue stallion of the mountain gradually become entwined with amazing results.

Art Buchwald's delightful romp through 1948 Paris is a witty tribute to the city he fell in love with. Existing on the GI Bill's munificence (until he's docked for skipping school and must work for the Herald Tribune instead), Buchwald recounts his youthful quest to become a great writer. He tells of when he met Hemingway (who asked if he'd ever wrestled a bear), lauds the pissoir as one of France's most civilized monuments, pays tribute to the café life, and writes of his hobnobs with James Thurber, Gregory Corso, Lauren Bacall, and Lena Horne (who found the priest who married him to Ann). From his Montparnasse garret to his induction by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, he's a consummate storyteller, and his Paris is a witty gift.
Book Description
"ART BUCHWALD DOES IT AGAIN. . . . A GREAT READ."
--Larry King, USA Today
In 1948, an American innocent named Art Buchwald set sail for Paris, France, determined to crash Hemingway's moveable feast and make himself famous. What's more, he did it.
Now he remembers those golden years--when he wrote for the Paris Herald Tribune, fell in love, spoofed Hemingway, dined with gangsters, and crashed costume balls in Venice. Everything that has made Buchwald one of the world's best-loved writers is in this funny, enchanting, poignant book.
"HONEST AND MOVING . . . A CONSUMMATE STORYTELLER."
--The New York Times Book Review
"ROLLICKING . . . The book gallops and gambols along. . . . Buchwald is a master of the anecdote."
--The Baltimore Sun
Customer Reviews:
Entertainment Superb!.......2007-02-19
This is the third book by Buchwald that I have recently read.
The books were the ones identified in his last column in the Washington Post a month or so ago.
Leaving Home reminded me of my "up bringing" though I had it much better that Buckwald in most respects and I was too scared to join the Marines in June 1950 though I now regret that decision!
Buckwald's books are humorous, heartwarming and most enjoyable, even "Too Soon to Say Goodbye" which I sent to my 86 year old sister who has lived alone since her husband died 25 years ago. Recommended reading for those who need a break from novels and non-fiction "stuff".

Hilarious and nostalgic.......2006-02-20
Art Buchwald deserves a place alongside Mark Twain, Will Rogers, Robert Benchley and Erma Bombeck as the creme de la creme of American humorists.
Speaking of creme de la creme and other things French, Buchwald's career began in the City of Light, where he went in 1948 on the G.I. Bill, hoping to become a great writer in the style of his hero, Ernest Hemingway. Instead, he became a great writer in his own style and has long been a hero to other humorists (including yours truly) who wish they had even a fraction of Buchwald's talent.
"I'll Always Have Paris!" is not a collection of newspaper columns, as most of The Master's 33 books have been. It is the second part of his classic memoirs, the first being the wonderful "Leaving Home."
In "I'll Always Have Paris!," Buchwald wittily recounts talking his way into a dream job as a columnist for the European edition of the New York Herald Tribune, despite having had almost no professional experience.
He then recalls his exploits as a bon vivant and a humorist nonpareil. Best of all, he tells a magical love story -- his wooing of and marriage to Ann McGarry, a redhead from Pennsylvania who made the most romantic city on earth even more heavenly for the kid from Queens.
Whether the tears are from laughing or crying, you'll shed them. I've never been to Paris, but I hope to get there one day. Until then, thanks to Art Buchwald, I'll always have "I'll Always Have Paris!"
Light and fun to read!.......2004-01-23
I picked up this book at the used bookstore not knowing anything about Art Buchwald; I was more interested in reading about a person living in Paris than I was about Mr. Buchwald himself.
I thought the book was delightful and I came away liking Art. His stories are funny, touching and sad, but always mixed up enough to keep the book lively and fun. I consider it light reading; a great escape from the office at lunchtime.
Witty tribute.......2002-10-14
Heard the taped version of I'LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS: A
MEMOIR, written and read by Art Buchwald . . . Buchwald has
always been one of my favorite humorists/columnist, though I
regret that he doesn't appear in my local paper.
This book is a follow-up to his earlier LEAVING HOME . . . it is a witty tribute to 1948 Paris, a city he fell in love with as he began his quest to become a great writer . . . there are a lot of cute stories, plus much name-dropping (Hemingway, Bacall, etc.).
I also liked hearing about how he met and fell in love with
his wife . . . his trials and tribulations as a father also had me laughing . . . as he notes, "..."
Overall, I enjoyed it . . . though this is one time where
a professional reader would have helped . . . Buchwald's voice
is not the easiest to understand--or at least not on these tapes.
City of Love.......2001-08-28
I first read this book last year after a trip to Europe which included a brief and wonderful trip to Paris. Buckwald has captured the essense of life in Paris. For those not in love with the city, this might lead to the thought that this would be a dull book. However, this book is a witty scream which left me at times reading with my mouth hanging open in amazement and at other times laughing out loud as I read turned the page. I wish I could have met him - or better yet, been able to attend one of the parties mentioned in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is fascinating, irreverent and jovial. A great read.
