      Book Description

The characters from manga-or Japanese comics-have begun to dominate the world of kids' cartoons and comics. Now kids can learn to draw their own manga-style characters with Kids Draw Manga, the newest addition to the Kids Draw series. Young artists will find a complete introduction to the basics of manga style, from the well-known shiny eye to manga-style noses, mouths, and body types. Pages of step-by-step drawings offer a diverse range of cool manga characters with appeal to both boys and girls, including a basic manga girl and boy, a schoolgirl, a mysterious swordsman, a hero knight, a flying robot soldier, and a laser fighter. More elaborate manga characters, like a spaceship commander and a dark-magic sorceress, are offered for kids who are either older or have worked through the book and are ready for the next level. As in all Kids Draw books, each dazzling spread is easy to follow, fun to look at, and guaranteed to charm a new generation of artists!

      4 out of 5 stars A good start, but..........2007-06-13

I was completely terrible at drawing, but I wanted to learn how to construct manga characters. This book is good for basics, a few eye shapes, head and body shapes, basic motion. There's even a bit on robots, so mostly what I expected. My only qualm, no mention of hair or clothing technique. Now, I've only had it a day, and I can spit out a generic face. Also, I can draw a much nicer circle.

2 out of 5 stars Don't delude yourself into thinking this is authentic........2006-02-27

My sister had bought this book because she was interested in drawing manga a small bit. I flipped through the pages and found it very misleading for a "manga" instruction book.

First off, this isn't manga; though it may seem very stylistic and similar to the real thing it's not showing you how to draw manga, it's showing you how to draw American cartoons. The reason that it's not manga is that they pinpoints in the style of Japanese comics were missed a bit. The eyes were probably the worst aspect of this book being "fake", they were opaque circles with random shines within them--all style, no substance. The hairstyles did not show diversity, all spikey, while real anime/manga hairstyles had meaning to them or certain patterns. The sections on drawing character stereotypes were very pointless and long, considering that the author could have just written "here are the features of a [insert anime stereotype(s)]" insteading of having a detailed instruction that wasn't even necessary.

The best aspect of this book was the detailed instruction to drawing anatomy and proportions, not manga. That seemed to be the only somewhat useful part in the book.

Overall, this book receives about a 15% in grades, not good. If you're looking for an introduction to drawing MANGA, buy Katy Coope's book, but if you're looking for a simplified version of drawing anatomy and proportions, buy this--don't let "manga" in the title delude you into thinking that it is the real thing.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Manga.......2005-12-22

Excellent book, excellent drawings, great instruction. Christopher Hart shows the development of his drawings in a clear, step by step fashion, allowing you to see his thought process. This is fun for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2005-10-24

I bought this book for my daughter who is 12, and she loves it. She said it has helped her learn how to draw Manga character arms, hands, and facial expressions better. It is easy to follow with lots of examples.

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2004-07-24

I loved this book for its innovative way of simplifying with out loosing the creativity.
Basic four to six steps to creating the figure, motion & expression that makes up the character. Brining the book home instantly drew kids from our neighborhood to our kitchen table where they all gathered around for a morning full of fantasy. I'll probably back to purchase another one of the series soon.

      Book Description

Kids flock to manga—they watch the television shows, they go to the movies, they carry the licensed products everywhere. And the most popular manga of all is manga shoujo (pronounces MAHN-gah SHOW-jo), a clean-lined style with stories about friends, romance, school, and magic. Girls love it, boys love it, and parents love it, too, because it's bright, cheerful, and appealing. Kids Draw Manga Shoujo starts with basic heads, faces, bodies, and costumes, then goes on to show dozens of high-energy characters in Christopher Hart's easy-to-follow step-by-step drawings and clear, engaging text. Teens, school kids, magical girls and boys, fairies, elves, demigods, and goddesses are all part of the world of manga shoujo—and now kids everywhere can be part of that world with Kids Draw Manga Shoujo.

1 out of 5 stars This is not manga........2006-08-16

Being a manga artist myself, I must declare- Hart is not a manga artist. His work is just mere cartoon with a little touch of manga. Before buying this book, I advise you to look inside. If you are going to buy this book for your child as most people do, then buy one of the HTDM (How To Draw Manga). If you present this as a first manga book for your child whatsoever, then it will just ruin his or her art style.

As of what I have seen, this book will attempt to make you or your children copy his mere artwork. All of his steps are exactly like many other manga books, only the art is much much worse.

My final line is, I DEFINITELY do NOT reccommend this book. If I could, I would have rated this 0 stars. If I was him, I wouldn't go selling books before I learn more about Manga.

      1 out of 5 stars To western!.......2005-12-24

I am a huge shoujo fan and this is deppressing. The art in this book doesn't even LOOK like manga. Even a begginer can figure that out. I mean I showed this book to my friend who doesn't even like manga and she could even figure out that Hart is terrible at manga. Beggieners or advance stay away! Instead of wasteing your money on this dinky little 60 paged book try the how to draw manga series. You might accually LEARN how to draw real manga!

I like Manga, as do my children. We have bought other Manga Shoujo books but we prefer this one, by far. We enjoyed the drawings, the step by step instruction and how Christopher Hart captures the Manga Shoujo attitude. Our family really enjoyed this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-03

I teach art and have had many requests to teach anime. I don't draw in the anime/manga style and struggled to do so. Christopher Hart's book is a great tie-in or introduction to Fantasy Manga. His style is similiar to mine in that it is a bit more cartoony than traditional anime/manga style. While some people might criticize the book for that, I think it's an awesome book with lots of color pictures. It even had some tips and tricks I didn't know. It would be useful for a beginner or a resource for someone more experienced. If you are looking to draw like someone else or in the more traditional style of anime/manga then this book is not for you. But if you are looking to develop your own style or like the more Americanized look to your anime/manga drawing then I would highly recommend it!

        5 out of 5 stars fantasy rocks.......2006-04-23

Motivating for the young beginner cartoonist. My kids loved this easy to follow instructive book. Fantasy goes wild with just a few tips and direction. Beginning with the basic figures, adding hair styles, eye shapes & general body posture brings the magna life & character. Many examples to follow or just be inspired by makes this book a fantastic entertaining guide to manga drawing

            5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2006-08-01

I came across this book many years ago in a bookstore and bought it immediately. Always interested in Russian history, this was a fascinating glimpse into the past for me. As the previous reviewer said, its like the pictures were taken yesterday. Well worth the price for someone interested in this period of history.(I think I paid $35 for it new, a tidy sum for a book then)

4 out of 5 stars The way they were..........2000-08-11

If you landed here through a title or subject search, you've probably already seen this book in the library. You have my sympathy on learning that it is out of print. (If you came here through my personal page, I'm flattered!) This is a book of photographs of Russia from the decade before World War I. Thing is, these are mostly _color_ pictures. This early color process produced images that are about as good as the color photos in the Sunday newspaper today. The photographer, S. M. Prokudin-Gorskii, showed the images in the form of a slide show to Tsar Nikolai II, in hopes of having similar exhibitions in Russian schools.

The subject matter is fairly prosaic. The images are postcard views of rustic villages, broad rivers, wooden dams, happy peasants at work and at leisure, exotic Caucasian and central Asian tribespeople in colorful native dress, lots of onion-domed churches and shrines. Prokudin-Gorskii meant these pictures to show the pageantry and glory of Mother Russia.

Today, they are painful reminders of a world that has been smashed forever. The peasants would die in the Great War, or starve in the postwar famines, or butcher each other in the Civil War, or be executed in the Red Terror. The public works would go to ruin due to the incompetence of the commissars who would run them after the bourgeois engineers had been eliminated. The colorful tribespeople would be exiled. The churches would be looted and demolished. The peaceful meadows would be paved over by ill-conceived, gigantic heavy industrial plants. The villages would be burned by civil war and foreign invasions. Seeing all these images which look like they were taken yesterday, and knowing the fate that awaited their subjects, is quite an experience.

Contrast this book to another book of pre-war Russian color photographs, _Leonid Andreyev, Photographs of a Russian Writer_. His vision is much more personal, but no less poignant.

            4 out of 5 stars TAKEZOU'S FAMILY REUNION.......2005-08-23

Haruna wins a raffle contest at a store for one night and two days at a beach resort in Izu so the gang is off for a little fan service and fun in the sun. But what is that giant black fin cutting through the water? Is this a scene from Jaws? It's up to Takezou and company to find out what exactly is cruising in the depths beneath their feet. Takezou's sister, Shinano, a fellow otaku, and his brother, whose mission it is to bring Takezou home, arrive at Maniac Road! And then a fire at the store might just bring all their dreams burning down.

This final volume of Maniac Road has a little more drama, which isn't much, than the other volumes. We get glimpses of a romance between Aoba and Takezou, and also hints of Takezou's dark family secret. Volume 3 is very well written and seems a little more about plot than conveying the author's primary otaku interests. And it's still pretty funny, in a respectable way. Good series.

The final volume of Maniac road is almost as tight as the previous two books, but not quite. That being said, it is still a rather enjoyable read and the last few chapters are inspiring.

All the otaku goodness is still there, but in a few forced storylines. A trip to the beach brings about the discovery of an antique submarine (the main subject of of otakuness after many pages of the girls in swimwear), Takezou's heretofore unmentioned brother, sister, and father all get page space (guest star, reoccuring regular, and cameo in respective order), and something happens that changes Maniac Road forever.

It's a good book, and I'd buy it purely for more Maniac sweetness alone and the final chapter where everyone comes together in the end for the greater good. The only problem I have is bringing in all these extras, such as Takezou's brother, and making his sister a main reoccuring character when you're just going to end the series with this volume anyway. Wasted Potential.

But, I guess that's what PRETTY MANIACS is for... in which his sister takes center stage at the store! Mwaaahahahaha. Good Marketing... but I want more Takezou/Haruna goodness (if that's where SK was leaning... towards the end there, it seemed like he was priming Takezou and Aoba for a little romance).

            Oh well... BUY IT!

              Book Description

Finding Annie Farrell is a stirring memoir of a daughter's search for her mother's secret history. This true story begins in the depths of the Great Depression, when a woman dies in childbirth in Mechanic Falls, Maine, leaving behind five daughters and a newborn son. Their father names the baby Franklin Delano Roosevelt Farrell, but the family's faith in a faraway president cannot protect them from poverty, fires and floods. They lose their home on the banks of the Little Androscoggin River; the children are sent to live with strangers, and their father goes to jail. One girl, Annie Farrell, moves to New York with glamorous dreams of becoming a model. She marries a war hero who fought with the 101st Airborne in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, and together they raise their own family. But away from the evergreens and lakes of her native Maine, surrounded by the decay of Manhattan in the 1960s and '70s, Annie Farrell falls into a numbing depression. Trapped in a housewife's role, and haunted by her Dickensian childhood, she withdraws. Only when she travels to Maine each summer to vacation in a rustic cottage on a lake does she come alive again.Twenty years after Annie Farrell's death, her daughter, Beth Harpaz, embarks on a journey to explain her mother's relentless sorrow and to understand why those summer sojourns in Maine were the magic cure for her ills. The author mines the memories of her four elderly aunts, discovering two hidden brothers and other family secrets along the way. And she undertakes a genealogical hunt that goes back 200 years, uncovering among her ancestors a mysterious Indian great-grandma, French Acadians, and Michael Farrell, an Irish immigrant from whom hundreds of North Americans are descended. Most importantly, she finds the keys to her mother's nightmares, and finally understands why Annie Farrell could never let go of the forest primeval.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for lovers of Maine---an amazing book.......2004-03-01

I am not sure when was the last time I read a book with which I felt such a connection. The author's quest to understand her mother, who grew up in rural inland Maine in the 1930s, and who wound up a very depressed housewife in New York City, would be a compelling tale even in less able hands, but the wonderful writing here makes this an amazing book. I grew up in Maine, but in coastal Maine, and I think reading this book was one of the first times I truly understood the vast difference between coastal Maine and inland Maine, even after reading and re-reading the wonderful We Took to the Woods, written about the same time period as Harpaz's mother's childhood. Annie Farrell's sisters are both well drawn individuals and also so much like so many women I knew in Maine, especially during the times I spent in Aroostook County as a young adult. The gradual unfolding of family secrets, and the realization that some stories can never really be confirmed or disputed is something most of us have found in learning about family history, but few can tell it as well as this book does. If you love family memoirs, geneology, Maine, New York City, World War II stories, or in fact just good reads in general, I highly recommend this book!

                Book Description

Paul Lambert has had an amazing career, becoming the first Scot to take advantage of the Bosman ruling, signing for Borussia Dortmund. There, he inspired his star-studded team-mates—among them Andreas Moller, Matthias Sammer, and Jurgen Kohler—to their European Cup triumph over the mighty Juventus. Lambert signed for Celtic where, within weeks of his transfer, he picked up a League Cup winner's medal, and he seems destined for more success with the rejuvenated Parkhead squad. This book takes us inside two of the biggest clubs in Europe as Lambert recounts the events of the past few years. He details how he helped tame Manchester United in the Champions' League and how he dealt with the threat of such brilliant players as Del Piero and Zidane in the final. He explains why he returned to Scotland and what life is really like at Parkhead—and why he believes Celtic are set to become the country's number-one club again.
