Book Description
The Elements of Style is the most comprehensive visual survey, period by period, feature by feature, of the styles that have had the greatest impact on interiors of American and British domestic architecture. Unsurpassed in its range of illustrations, this magnificent volume covers more than 500 years of architectural styles from Tudor to Post-Modern and includes a wealth of American and British vernacular styles. Everyone from owners of period houses, restorers, and architects to interior designers, do it-yourself homeowners, and all those interested in our building heritage will find this reference indispensable.
More than 3,000 analytical drawings and historic engravings are included in this updated edition as well as 400 photographs in color and over 1,000 in black and white. These extraordinary images provide a systematic guide to the features appropriate for every part of a building, from the major components such as doors, windows, walls, floors, ceilings, and staircases to the small but important embellishments such as moldings and door hardware.
At the heart of the book is a chronological treatment of the primary styles and periods of architectural design during the past 500 years. Each chapter begins with an illustrated essay, then looks in turn at individual features, from doors and windows to ironwork and woodwork. The usefulness of this book is further enriched by the inclusion of permanent or semipermanent fixtures such as lighting, kitchen stoves, and floor and wall coverings, as well as strictly architectural details.
A useful system of quick reference, employing color-coded tabs keyed to each feature, enables the reader to trace how particular features evolved over time. And at the back of the book, separate chapters dealing with vernacular architecture are followed by a glossary and a fully updated directory of suppliers of authentic materials as well as period and reproduction features. For this new edition, a biographical directory of architects and architectural practices has been added.
Compiled by a team of experts headed by Stephen Calloway and Elizabeth Cromley, The Elements of Style is the first book on architectural styles that is comprehensive, incredibly thorough, and accessible in its presentation of individual details. Equally invaluable for authentic period restoration or simply for saying to your contractor, "I want one like that" -- this definitive resource presents literally thousands of details.
Customer Reviews:
this book is like ordering not quite enough tapas. .......2006-08-10
It tastes delicious, but leaves you hungry.
the book is stunning. the pictures are inspiring. the information is rich. it covers a lot of time
now i want a book just as thick for each of the particular styles that are covered so i can actually learn and delve.
still, its a great start.
What a shock!.......2006-02-08
When this turned up on my doorstep, I got a real shock! I bought it as a reference book, something to "look things up in" from time to time, as needed. But, I found myself going through it, page after page after page. I couldn't put it down. It is jam packed with information, excellent drawings, photographs, text. I have nothing bad to say about it. The book is well bound, the paper excellent quality. Worth every cent.
Wonderful.......2002-12-11
As an Architectural Illustrator in black and white media, this book has been an invaluable reference tool. As a Librarian, no Library should be without this book. The only thing that one could wish for is that it was a multi-volume set with many more pages to peruse, like a novel you don't want to end.

should be required for the scenic designer.......2001-02-16
This book will save the theatrical designer a lot of time. It provides just the right amount of detail to get you going on the right track. This book is the first thing you should open when designing a period piece. My research time has been cut drastically. This is perfect for the junior high or high school teacher who doesn't have the time to spend hours and hours at the library. The drawings are wonderful. This book is worth its weight in gold.

Color Mixing .......2006-08-15
This book is an excellent book. I have just started art lessons and need a little help in knowing how to mix colors.
Helen Van Wyk books have all been excellent book. Easy to understand with great information and instructions.
Not enough demonstration.......2006-07-05
There are lots of words and sentences on painting but no demonstrations to explain what she is talking about. The words flow and not actually teaching methods.
Color Mixing the V.W.W........2006-07-02
This is a great book specially for beginner. Excellent reference book. I'll certainly read it several times.
Worse than useless.......2006-03-14
All the theory in this book is dead wrong. There is little by way of practical advice. The book is mainly a collection of amateurish paintings by Ms. Van Wyk that are supposed to illustrate how to use various tubed colors. You should aspire to paint much better than Van Wyk ever did.
To date, there appears to be no good book on mixing color. Instead, see www.handprint.com. It's about watercolor, but the color theory and mixing sections apply equally to oil paint. Also give a look to www.wetcanvas.com
Disappointed.......2004-05-20
As a beginner I regret having bought this book. Its content is too subjective, and has nothing to do with color mixing formulas
or theories. This book is like a step by step painiting excersise book with about 10 examples or so, nothing more. Very little substance.

Not Just for Oil Painters - a color reference for everyone.......1998-09-11
You will appreciate and use this book as a color reference, and as a philosophy explaining why we do paint and view things the way we do. The author Helen Van Wyk, in the introduction shares her invaluable experiences that she learned while studying with the Master M. A. Rasko in the 1940's. The articles he wrote are no longer in print and can't be found so she shares some of his fundamental approaches to painting here. A most important and valuable learning experience for me, was how the six colors of the spectrum and their admixtures, vary in three ways, in tone intensity and hue. In other words; brown, tan and orange are variants of yellow in regards to the tone, intensity and hue that you mix the colors. She uses the example of a Yellow Lemon on a table on a darker toned background, and you might describe the colors as brown, rust, tan or woody but it is actually a yellow lemon on a yellow table on a yellow background. Buy this Book if you want to enjoy the colorful world around you!
Book Description
Photographing People: At Home and Around the World is the 6th volume in a series of instructional books first started by internationally acclaimed photographer Freeman Patterson. Here, Andr Gallant, Pattersons longtime teaching partner and co-author of Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image, offers clear instructions for photographers who want to capture the free spirit of a child, the extraordinary life of a grandparent, or the mysterious draw of a stranger who compels the imagination. This edition features 100 stunning photographs with extended captions that include valuable technical guidelines for both film and digital photographers, and illustrates the superb craftsmanship behind beautiful photography.
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointing.......2006-04-08
This book is the sixth in the excellent series. with Freeman Patterson responsible for most of the previous volumes. "Photographing people" is aimed at the photographer without much experience. If this is you, you will enjoy the book. The photos themselves are certainly good, and the text covers all the common-sense issues encountered when photographing people.
If you are looking for a book that gives advice about complex lighting setups for portraits (eg multiple flash units and/or reflectors and diffusers), then this book is not for you. And personally I did not expect yet another book to tell me what kinds of camera equipment I need. This section covers roughly a third of the book.

Collect them all!!!!!!! I DID!.......2006-08-09
My mother had bought all nine volumns of The Saga for a person we knew who was struggling with peer pressure and drugs. She used these Christian comics as a tool to reach him and save him. The day she brought them home I sat down to read volumn 1. After that I couldn't stop until I read them all. I spend the entire evening reading them to my daughter as well. Soon I was at the book store buying all nine volumns for myself to keep as a collection. Some of the pictures are graphic and scary but the reality is that it's TRUE, not only are we at war in the Middle East but there is a closer war right here among us all. It's a spiritual WarFare. These comics explain in scripture and how we have a choice not to be victimized by evil. These comics are an excellent tool to express how much you care about someone by sharing this colorful illustrations and true to life story line with them. Highly recommended.
An exiting thriller!!.......1999-07-17

Awesome Comic.......2004-03-16
I first saw Archangels long before I was reading any comic, when a friend handed it to me. I never forgot it. From that moment on, whenever I had a chance to buy an issue, I'd jump at it! These comics are awesome--- action-oriented, emotional, and driven, with amazing artwork. Pick one up! There can't be a better demon/angel saga anywhere, unless you're looking in a Peretti book.
Book Description
A brilliantly witty and intelligent memoir of the adventures, discoveries, rescues, and narrow escapes of Martha Gellhorn, one of America's most important war correspondents and the third wife of Ernest Hemingway.
"Gellhorn is incapable of writing a dull sentence."
-The Times (London)
"Martha Gellhorn was so fearless in a male way, and yet utterly capable of making men melt," writes New Yorker literary editor Bill Buford. As a journalist, Gellhorn covered every military conflict from the Spanish Civil War to Vietnam and Nicaragua. She also bewitched Eleanor Roosevelt's secret love and enraptured Ernest Hemingway with her courage as they dodged shell fire together.
Hemingway is, of course, the unnamed "other" in the title of this tart memoir, first published in 1979, in which Gellhorn describes her globe-spanning adventures, both accompanied and alone. With razor-sharp humor and exceptional insight into place and character, she tells of a tense week spent among dissidents in Moscow; long days whiled away in a disused water tank with hippies clustered at Eilat on the Red Sea; and her journeys by sampan and horse to the interior of China during the Sino-Japanese War.
Now including a foreward by Bill Buford and photographs of Gellhorn with Hemingway, Dorothy Parker, Madame Chiang Kai-shek, Gary Cooper, and others, this new edition rediscovers the voice of an extraordinary woman and brings back into print an irresistibly entertaining classic.

A winner!.......2005-10-27
This is a truly delightful read...Gellhorn's wit and courage shine through. Her observations and insight are so interesting. You will enjoy this book.
the best.......2004-06-27
As a traveller and a reader, this is one of the best books i have read in a very long time.
Excellent!.......2001-09-10
One of the finest books I have read on the subject of travel, in a class with the best of Theroux and Chatwin. Take on your next trip along with a battered straw hat..!
Traveling with a world class traveler.......2000-06-26
This wonderful travelogue of "bad trips" to politically important places takes the reader on an incredible range of journeys to many world hot and "cold" war spots. China and a meeting with Communist leaders in hiding during WWII (with the writer's then husband (Ernest Hemingway) looming large but quietly in the background and a poignant trip to an aging Russian writer in the days of Soviet rule transport us through time and space. Martha Gellhorn, as journalist and fiction writer, needs to be "recovered" with the very best of war correspondents of any gender and the adventuresome and unbelievably courageous woman travelers of the 20th century. The section on Gellhorn's travels in Africa, because it is so "honest" and forthright on matters of race, will strike some as politically incorrect, but her descriptions of modes of transport, race, missionaries and the search for exotic animals are among the most vivid anywhere. This book moves the reader -- through time and space, brain and heart.

Some points...........2005-07-26
... he have, but overall he complains to much. What he has to give up, Ferguson yells, Keane says that....bla bla bla - and of course Stam never/selldom does wrong in/outside the pitch.
Over paid and over rated.......2002-01-12
Whilst the book itself is quite well written the contents reveal a professional footballer expecting sympathy for the fact that he has to travel long distances for out of season friendly matches and he had to sacrifice a lump sum payment to play for one of the best teams in the world. There is little real insight into the professional game or recognition that the top players are priveleged individuals who are extremely well paid but who have responsibilities to their adoring public. The book fails to provide a good insight into the pleyers views on the key issues facing the sport. It is a major disappointment.
A quick read albeit too focused on ManU.......2002-01-09
I have always wanted to know about the behind-the-scenes world of football and this book does the job. It drags on at times and is way too focused on Manchester United but Jaap gives a pretty decent account of his 3 years in english football.
