5 out of 5 stars To get started in architecture and design.......2006-06-16

this refers to the 1989 Penguin Edition-

Asa mechanical engineer in my late thirties I started to know what architecture was all about and its relation to design. It turns out that its not easy to have a comprehensive introduction to the theme. Fortunately, Through Amazon and its reviews and suggested I bought this wonderful book and I was captivated, not only by the perspective it gives on the architecs work, but also on the insight about design it provides.

4 out of 5 stars A subjective essay on the subjective task of home-building.......2006-05-12

This book by the author of "Home: A Short History of an Idea" (1986) is a more subjective and less disciplined examination of that same topic. Professor Rybczynski uses his experience as an immigrant trying to "fit in" as a lens for looking at what in means to build ones own home. The skeleton of this story is the author's own decision to build a shed to which he can retreat on weekends (for more on weekends, read the author's "Waiting for the Weekend," 1991) and build a boat he can sail away in. At some point the shed becomes more of a barn and then, when he finally abandons his plan to build a boat, it becomes a permanent home for himself and his wife. For me, the book is less about architecture, the act or craft of building, and more about morphing and the undpredictable ways life unfolds. Taken in that vein, Rybczynski's story can be appreciated as a spiritual journey with many sidetrips and gentle awakenings. He is self-critical, but not self-deprecating. And he infuses his tale with enough humor to keep the reader interested without taxing credibility. I especially enjoyed his description of his wife, Shirley, who does some morphing of her own. At the beginning (when the couple was building a mere boathouse), she is little more than an extra pair of hands; when the couple decides to make the structure they have been building into their home, Shirley suddenly becomes a full-fledged "client," full of opinions and demands.

Although, Rybczynski describes several impressive architect conceived and built houses (such as Wright's Fallingwater and Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth house), it is the houses built by their owners that he most celebrates--Mark Twain's home in Hartford, Connecticutt, Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford, Robert Lewis Stevenson's Vailima in Samoa, artists Carl and Karin Larsson's much documented Lilla Hyttnas in Sundborn, Sweden, and Carl Jung's home in Bollingen, Switzerland. "It is no coincidence," writes Rybczynski, "that Stevenson, Scott, Clemens, Larsson, Castrejon, and I were less than forty years old when we built our homes.... The process of building, for all of us, was a process of installing ourselves in a place, of establishing a spot where it would be safe to dream. We had to be old enough to recognize the particularity--and limits--of our dreams, but not too old to believe in them....My house had begun with the dream of a boat. The dream had run aground--I was now rooted in place." (pp. 190, 193)

3 out of 5 stars BLURRY WRITING.......2005-08-22

I have to agree with another reviewer this book has little to do with home building and is much adieu about nothing. In the end I was a little digusted at what got built....but then again what is beautiful?

I am a fan of the author and this is my 3rd read by him. I do have to warn potential readers that sometimes this book rambles on about topics most readers would have VERY little interest in. On the flip side the book does contain passages that are highly entertaining. Its about 50/50

This is a book that comes in and out of focus, a style of writing I believe the author enjoys. I guess in order to get books out in the marketplace as often as Witold does he must resort to digressing on just about any topic that pops into his mind.

With that said, he is an intellect...he's well traveled and leads what I believe to be a pretty interesting life.

This is an average book, I was expecting a bit more about home building and a bit less esoteric rhetoric. But then again, nothing churns out books better than rambling away.

1 out of 5 stars Holy Digression!.......2004-01-03

This book did not come close to meeting my expectations. Of the 200 pages in this book, scarcely 30 actually pertain to the author's house building experience. It appears "the Most Beautiful House" subject was merely a excuse to ramble from one topic to another. One minute he is talking about animal sacrifices & liver divining, the next he is discussing the verb "to habit". I was sorely disappointed and struggle to find any redeeming quality in this work. Readers be warned that this book is a motley crew of diatribes on topics having little to do with The Most Beautiful House in the World.

5 out of 5 stars See Under: Function and Form.......2001-07-14

This book, an extension in action of the literal expressed in the earlier historic study "Home," takes notion to application in the form of constructing a boat house. Interwoven into the text is an historic overview -albeit briefly- of seventeenth to twentieth century architecture (mies, le corbisier, wright), the elements, motifs, and functional aspects associated with the broader field. Along the way one has the sense the author is being contemplative (although not digressive) in the approach toward considering all phasesof development; a sometimes apt metaphor for the arrival at both the functional and practical. The book itself is well arranged, the letterhead holding sturdy upon the page. It is compact, holds well in the hand and is highly accessible: one could easily read in one sitting. Of interest for anyone engaged in projects in addition to their immediate structure.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but I think it needs updating.......2007-01-02

Basically the writing is crappy, the pictures are bad and the techniques described in this book are old and written from the 1960's. I also think the writer of this book does not stress the dangers and health hazards involved with printmaking enough...This is really dangerous stuff to work with and it is irresponsible to have a book that does not give a big warning about these hazards at every step of the way...Usage of some pigments can cause lung cancer if inhaled, inhaling orderless acid fumes can cause emphysema, rosin dust is highly explosive and can cause asthma, naptha causes lung damage, etc, etc...I think this book is old and kinda crappy. I only give it three stars because it does contain a couple of tips and tricks about printmaking.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding descriptions of many techniques.......2005-10-03

This is a brief book, just 100 pages or so, and heavily illustrated. As a result, I'm puzzled about how this author managed to cram so much great informtation into it. It covers the basics of etching, engraving, soft-ground, sugar-lift, aquatint, mezzotint, drypoint, and a few other techniques, along with preparing the intaglio plate, trial proofs of various kinds, and seemingly endless tips for the artist working in a small, self-equipped studio.

Banister puts strong emphasis on home-made equipment. The most exotic tool he describes is a glass muller for mixing ink. Even then he notes how to put it together, using the kind of glass blank used for telescope mirrors. The book has a few formulas for etchants and grounds, but fewer than other books - the real strength here is in discussion of tools and technique, down to very practical details. Photos showing tools and techniques are quite helpful, but Banister complements them with written detail of fine points that would be hard to capture photographically.

This is a great resource for an admirer of prints (like me), who wants to know more about how prints and the marks in them are made. I imagine that it would be very helpful for beginning printers, too, especially those without access to a big studio or expert guidance.

            5 out of 5 stars great for beginners-intermediate printmakers.......2001-12-14

I love this book. I am an intermediate level printmaking student and it has helped me so much. I have a lot more confidence with etching my plates, and I know how to get what I want out of them. It helps with techniques from learning to time your acid baths, preparing, tool orientation, etc. It has been a great help in the lab.

            5 out of 5 stars A good reference.......2000-05-21

A very good reference ,for beginners as for already experienced etchers. It has a very detailed explanation of each step, with very useful practical indications,b/w pictures and a short appendix of famous etchings. I really recommend it.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding text.......2007-08-10

Leaf's text covers a remarkable range of intaglio techniques. The first chapters cover the basics of tools, printing papers, and setting up a workshop. Next, she covers the basics of familiar printmaking techniques, etching (including soft ground), aquatint, and some interesting variations. This section also includes recipes for inks and grounds - not encyclopedic, but a basic set of materials for different techniques. Leaf covers each technique methodically, describing its goals, materials, and process. The end of each chapter offers an especially helpful "what went wrong" section.

Following the basics, Leaf continues with some elaborations, including multiple layers of aquatint and viscosity printing. She also lays out some unusual techniques, including collographs and "tuilegraphs." That's a fascinating variation on linoleum prints, but based on slightly different materials and very distinctive ways of creating the image in the printing surface.

Despite its strengths, this book has a few significant weak spots. Safety standards aren't always what a current reader would hope. For example, discussion of the corrosive etchants talks about flushing eyes with water in case of an acid spash, but doesn't mention goggles. Elsewhere, she mentions protective gloves in the text but omits those gloves from the photos that show the process under discussion. And, when it comes to disposing of spent etchant, I can't agree with pouring "neutralized acid on the ground where you don't expect anything to grow." On the positive side, techniques are profusely illustrated, showing both techniques and finished products.

Those problems just mean that the reader should approach this with a critical eye, not avoid it completely. There's just too much good here to give up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent on etching, needs more info on engraving.......2007-07-08

I cannot complain about Leaf's intro to etching. My only caveat is that although the title includes engraving, there is only one rudimentary chapter on engraving. But otherwise the structure and clarity of the the text is great. I'm always referring back to it.

As a retired professional photographer I expected the finer points of family portraiture to be missing. Instead, it was excellent both in the fundamentals and in the detailed aspects of photographing groups. As a retiree I am using it for in-depth review, and I love it. My wife and I studied with Monte Zucker many years ago and we were happy to see his work included, along with Bill McIntosh and other fine professionals.

I read quickly and started my own photography experimenting. I also enjoyed being able to go back and quickly find answers to my questions while working. This is a very user-friendly book.

I checked this book out of the public library and after reading it twice (the second time through taking notes) in the first day, I immediately came to Amazon to add it to my wish list. This book has some practical advice for not just how to set up the "natural look" poses that are popular today, but also has real advice on marketing your service as well. If you want to get started making money with portraits, this book is a great place to start. Four stars instead of five because the marketing section left me wanting more...

4 out of 5 stars The Queen of Sales.......2000-10-26

I have this book in my collection. If you are serious about family portraiture, generally regarded as the most profitable segment of portrait photography, you should own this and any other book by Helen Boursier. She is absolutely the best when it comes to maximizing your income from portrait sessions. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because there is a great range in the quality of the portraits included. This is a very small investment that will both give you photographic ideas and increase your income. Steve Bedell, Master Photographer Contributing Columnist, SHUTTERBUG magazine

            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-11-27

Although geared to the professional, the information is too vague. Too much emphasis on the artificial setting (old-time porch) and the beach. Also, the author seems to think all portraits lie in the medium format realm. I've learned much more about interesting ways to pose and light from wedding photography books.

This was a good book and kept my interest. I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to all the fraternity brothers as they went along in life.

I read 'Goat Brothers' a number of years ago. I found the author's sincerity and honesty to be very moving. Much of the behavior he chronicles is either sad, unpleasant, or both. Yet he doesn't flinch from his own flaws and shortcomings. Why care about these people? Because they were struggling human beings who, like many of us, didn't understand the meaning and consequences of much of their own behavior until much later---if they were lucky. 'Goat Brothers' is an extended snapshot of a particular time in American social history. I learned much from it.

Larry Colton does a great job of telling the tales of a group of college buddies. Colton, a former major league pitcher, does not favor his career over the stories of the others. He is blunt, funny, melancholic and pretty much every other emotion somewhere in the book. I thought I would enjoy the baseball parts (and I did), but I really loved reading about the rest of the college buddies.
With such great talent, I hope Larry writes another book, just on his own career.

This is an interesting book about some regular guys, thrown together by virtue of their fraternity affiliation. A terrific read, it shows you the twists and turns of some men's lives over the course of two (+) decades. By far one of my favorite books.

              Book Description

1958. Eisenhower is in the White House, Elvis is in the army, and eight-year-old Wade Parker is thrilled that Duke Snider and the Dodgers have moved west from Brooklyn. Yet all is not well in the Parker household. On the darkest day of his young life, Wade plunges into the midst of an unimaginable crisis. Worse yet, his younger brother witnessed what happened, and he can’t keep a secret for a truckload of Abba-Zabbas. With an abundance of brotherly love and the unseen grace of God, the brothers venture alone on dangerous exploits around northeast Los Angeles. A powerfully imaginative coming-of-age story seasoned with hooligan humor, Billy Goat Hill is an inspiring account of a young man’s quest for God. Culminating with a startling climax, the reader is embraced by the central theme of forgiveness and salvation that can only come from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Dorothy’s cyclone had nothin’ on Scar.

Los Angeles , 1958. Elvis is in the army. Eisenhower’s in the White House. And eight-year-old Wade Parker heads out for Billy Goat Hill to run the Crippler in the dark—just like Gooey dared him to. But Wade and his kid brother, Luke, run into Scar, the most fearsome character they’ve ever had the misfortune to meet at four in the morning. They won’t realize it for years to come, but knowing him will change their lives forever.

Wade’s family is already disintegrating over the loss of a child. If there’s no place like home, what happens when home is falling apart? Wade begins a decades-long journey, searching for answers. But when your life has been shaped by loss, murder, alcoholism, and betrayal, how do you find forgiveness?

              Story Behind the Book

“I wrote this novel to fulfill God’s plan for my gift...to glorify Him and evangelize the lost. Originally written before I gave my life to the Lord, I now realize how much God, through the writing, was working in my life. There is much of my own life story, some actual events, and a lot of metaphorical reflection, embodied in the fictional character of Wade Parker. The writing was deeply cathartic, and not long after completing the original version of this novel, I surrendered my heart to Jesus. By God’s grace I am now directed to write in His service.”

Thank you Mr. Morris! Billy Goat Hill is one of the best books I've ever read. I totally related to the character of Wade Parker. I laughed and I cried and I didn't want the story to end. I definitely recommend this book to teenagers. I am almost 16 and not the best reader but books like this one make me want to read.

5 out of 5 stars So easy to tell that this is something special.......2005-12-22

This book immediately caught my eye very early on this year in CBD's catalogue. And just when I saw the cover, I knew that this had to be something pretty special to the author's heart. I guess when it comes down to it, what author doesn't write about something that's in the blood, you know? Every book that comes out comes out with a reason. But this seemed to have more than just a purpose, and that was what attracted THIS man to read "Billy Goat Hill" by Mark Stanleigh Morris. I was correct, because this was worth every penny off the cover price, and then some.

Well, you meet the Parker brothers! At least you meet Wade and Luke, and Wade does a find job as narrator. He talks about how it all got started on Billy Goat Hill with a dare to ride The Crippler! You learn how him and Luke meet Scar, later in the book known as "The Sergeant" as well as his special friend, Miss Cherry. You will learn that Wade and Luke love these 2 special people. The love for them is like the love of their dog, Mac. You are taken to some of the glory days of Duke Snyder, and you may have inner debate of whether Don Drysdale or Sandy Koufax is the better pitcher of that era. Depending on your nature, you might develope a slight hatred for mockingbirds, or come to love them all the more.

But when it comes down to it, Morris has a message. Can we forgive? Can we come to an understanding at times? There is a quiet understanding in this, even through our inner demons, and it just goes to show that love can conquer all, and that Christ can heal a broken heart. While that doesn't give anything away, I think I'll leave it at that. But in saying that, do yourself a favor and check this out! Very special indeed!! This deserves more than a pat on the back. This deserves a big embrace!

I read the earlier reviews for this book and decided to ask for it. I am 12, so my mom read the book first and it made her cry and laugh. We both love to read novels. We are fiction freaks. This is a great book! It is my new favorite! I am planning to do a book review for school. I hope you read it too! Blessings to you all. Christina.

              5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars...It's About Time!.......2005-08-26

The field of Christian fiction for men is growing larger. Finally. The women have chick-lit, but until recently the men had sparse options. "Billy Goat Hill" follows in the steps of Michael Morris' "A Place Called Wiregrass," Brad Whittington's "Welcome to Fred," and Dale Cramer's "Bad Ground." This is literature, full of carefully rendered characters, memorable settings, and moral lessons that are powerful in their brevity.

"Billy Goat Hill" follows the lives of two brothers growing up in the suburbs of greater Los Angeles. They are typical boys, mischievous and adventure-seeking. But they are without a father, and their mother is very withdrawn after the death of their baby brother. A local policeman becomes a surrogate father of sorts, yet when one of the boys believes himself responsible for an accidental murder, all of their lives will be changed--for good and for bad.

Ultimately, Morris' story is one of redemption. Along the way, he shows the struggles of childhood, and the manner in which these struggles continue into adulthood. While keeping the story palpable for a Christian audience, Morris also portrays real issues in the lives of boys and men.

Although the story drags in a few places and the last third of the book switches quickly, somewhat abruptly into the future, I found the story engrossing. The endouement paints a clear picture of God's hand and forgiveness in our lives, even through the deceptions of sin and humanity. Thank God for quality men's literature in this market. It's about time.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.......2005-06-25

Billy Goat Hill is Mark Stanleigh Morris' debut novel. And what a debut! When I read, I read primarily for enjoyment. It's always a bonus if a book can truly touch my heart and make me smile, laugh, cry or just plain feel deeply about the characters and their circumstances. Morris has accomplished all of that and more.

It's 1958 in Los Angeles and eight-year-old Wade Parker's baby brother died. Wade's mother, Lucinda (he refers to his mother by her first name), is so grief struck that she's distanced herself from her two living children. And Earl, Wade's alcoholic father, has abdicated his parental responsibilities. To compensate for his parents' emotional and physical absence, Wade dreams (throughout the novel) that Duke Snyder, the Dodgers ballplayer, is his father. And he fantasizes what life would be like with Duke as dad.

One early morning, Wade and Luke, his six-year-old brother, take a journey to nearby Billy Goat Hill to slide down on cardboard (a poor kid's version of bobsledding). While Wade and Luke are waiting for another sledder to arrive and tackle the hill with them, they meet a man and woman and witness what they believe is a confrontation between a motorcycle gang and the police. Thus begins Wade's journey from childhood, as a vulnerable "lost" kid, to an adult man of God.

Billy Goat Hill allowed me to slip back in time, to an era that was simpler, but no less difficult because it's all about life and life is filled with drama, tragedy, humor and adventure. Morris' wonderfully complex, fully developed characters and rich prose is delightful. And the message of forgiveness and redemption left me feeling hopeful and satisfied.

Billy Goat Hill is a treasure waiting to be savored. The only regret that I have about this book is because it is labeled 'Christian Fiction' many people may pass on reading it and that would be a tragedy.

                          Book Description

Though Wild Bill and the other vintners of Mountain Drive in Santa Barbara, California, were serious about their wines, their hilarity suggests otherwise. Using winery names as various as Los Pinacates (The Stink Bugs), The Golden Goat Winery, The Pagan Brothers' Winery (pace The Christian Brothers), seemed to make light of their labors, and calling their wines by names such as Old Cellar Floor, and Old Barrel Wash tweaked the noses of sophisticated and snobbish wineries and their blarney. The 'Brothers' established the W.C.T.U., which stood for Wine Connoisseurs and Tasters United, whose slogan was, "United we stand; united we fall." A serious wine book.

                            Book Description

In this epic tale of sea-kayaking adventure, award-winning author Chris Duff places readers in the cockpit of his 18-foot kayak and lets them experience the full power and beauty of the South Pacific Ocean and the wild energy of the Tasman Sea as it thunders onto New Zealand's uninhabited west coast. Not just an account of human physical endurance and determination to attempt what had only been accomplished once before, this exquisitely written narrative reveals the philosophical and psychological life of a man who has chosen the sea as the master to sit before and to learn from. The intense and often terrifying sea journey is balanced by serendipitous meetings along the way with friendly New Zealanders and with the diverse wildlife of this tiny and remote island country. Southern Exposure is a force of writing that will captivate the armchair adventurer as well as the seasoned ocean traveler.

                            4 out of 5 stars A remarkable journey, well-told .......2007-03-05

Chris Duff's humility is one of the many striking attributes of a finely-written account of an often nerve-wracking and dangerous journey around New Zealand's South Island by sea kayak. Duff reminds us of the power and beauty of nature that so many of us have forgotten, lulled by the comforts of city life, and introduces the characters living around the coast whose goodness and moral support helped him get through the ordeal.

You don't have to be a kayaker to enjoy this book, but if you are, then you can empathise much more with the many challenges he faced. I was out there on the water with him, edging into the waves, fearing the surf, dwarfed by the Fiordland's cliffs. Well done, and thanks for sharing the experience!

                            4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-01-10

I took this book with me on a trip to New Zealand, and enjoyed reading it as I learned first hand the island's crazy seas, and the many interesting facts about the country. At times the author can be a little long winded, but I thought it was well written for a trip that inherently has so much repetition. If you like sea kayaking, nature, and adventure stories, I would recommend this book. If you get to a slightly boring part about being with one with the boat and sea, just keep reading, and more adventure is sure to follow.

2 out of 5 stars somewhat engaging but flawed.......2006-01-07

Unfortunately, I do not quite share the enthusiasm expressed by the other reviewers. Although Duff is an excellent descriptive writer, the numerous descriptions and philosophical musings in this book tend to go on and on needlessly; I do not need to read three pages about what it was like to find two apples in the ocean and eat them, or read description after description of the joys and epiphanies one experiences while paddling in a remote area. A little of that goes a long way.

I guess the upshot is that I was looking for an exciting adventure story, and what I got was perhaps the most thorough description of the New Zealand South Island's coastline, coastal waters, and weather patterns ever written. If you are looking for an "Into Thin Air"-type battle against the odds, keep looking. Although the journey required considerable paddling skills and Duff faced a few close calls, overall the book records little actual adversity aside from large waves and days of waiting out storms -- often in homes of hospitable New Zealanders rather than on his own.

I also agree with other reviewers that the photos are mediocre and certainly are not "stunning," as the back of the book claims.

                            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic........2005-07-06

A couple of years ago I saw Chris Duff speak at Canoecopia - a worldwide paddling expo held in Madison WI. One of his talks was about his solo circumnavigation of New Zealand's south island - the same topic as this book.
I, and I think the rest of the audience, was mesmerized as he told his tale. Even though he probably has talked about his trip many times it felt as if he was reliving it for the first time. His ecitement was contagious. The audience could almost feel the ocean swells and smell the salty air.
Chris Duff is as good of a writer as he is a public speaker. He vividly describes the scenery of his voyage, the people he encounters and his own personal thoughts. While, his adventures are WAY beyond my personal abilities I could actually feel what it would be like in his shoes (or in this case fast drying sandals) due to his excellent writing ability.

                            4 out of 5 stars Wow, Voyager!.......2004-12-04

By Bill Marsano. Chris Duff's photos, which are bundled together and whacked a little perfunctorily into the middle of this book, limp under the heading of 'snaps.' Duff belongs to the old school of kayakin' shutterbugs: compose any old how, so long as the bow of the boat is in the frame; shoot in any old light; and shoot, sometimes, any old subject. There's a darn nice snap of a Hooker seal here but what I really wanted was more pix of the damage (and later repairs) to his boat from the surf landing that nearly killed him. I'm just saying. (And the maps are even worse--clear, but seldom helpful.)

Never mind: This is a book of writing. Duff seems to have had no specific reason to try a 1700-mile circumnavigation of New Zealand's South Island (it's not even a first) but he is no virgin. He's looped the British Isles and then Ireland; he's paddled 8000 miles along the east coast of Canada and the U.S.; even now he may be paddling round Iceland.

He, too, gets into a little gauzy mysticism about the Eternal Why and his place in the universe, but most of the time he's a little too busy for that stuff. South Island's coast is a place that goes from bad to worse, and it's instructive to listen in as Duff relates his tactics and strategies for dealing with bad weather and dangerous, even life-threatening situations: You can learn from this stuff as well as be staggered by it. And just for lagniappe there are those occasional moments of perfect weather and following seas that surf him along in solitary joy. These usually come along just after the notoriously perverse Tasman Sea has, as they say south of here, "prit-near" beaten him to a pulp.

A particular pleasure of this book is the human aspect. Despite the solitary aspect of his circumnavigations, Duff is a sociable man who enjoys and appreciates the people he meets--and appears to bring out the best in them. Add that to the fact that Kiwis are notably kind and generous anyway and you are not surprised that Duff makes friends everywhere he goes and they bend over backwards to help him in every way they can.

Judging from the indications in the text, it's clear that Duff prepared extremely well for this voyage, and readers should pay close attention as they go along, because--probably because this stuff is bred into his bones by now--Duff spends very little time discussing equipment at the end. In fact, he's done with the subject in a single page.

There's one incident in this book that commands my admiration and will yours. I don't want to give anything away but at one point Duff receives some help of a rather expensive kind, and his response is to pull out his credit card. "No worries, mate," he's told, officialdom is budgeted for that. All very well, but Duff insists on paying his own way. He is well aware of the fact that a well-behaved guest doesn't batten on his hosts.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning editor and writer whose own kayaking voyages fill only pages, not books.
