5 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2007-05-13

This book is a fantastic reference for those interested in architecture or who just like to look at amazing houses. if you like this book, look into the rest of the series. Over all, a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book of Contemporary Homes.......2003-12-10

I love this book. Contemporary architecture is often misunderstood and misrepresented by focusing on the extreme or most useless of structures. In this book Ojeda takes us into some of the most beautiful, yet utilitarian, contemporary homes from the Arizona desert to Manhattan. He explains the design choices made and more importantly why they were made for the different designs. Included in the book are numerous beautiful photos of the different projects and architectural sketches of the projects.

This book would be a wonderful 'idea book' for an architect, or someone like me who is looking for ideas to give to an architect in preparation for building a new house. It is also a simply beautiful book to look at and learn from, both in design concepts specifically, and in building materials as well. I highly endorse this book as one of the best illustrated generalist books available on contemporary architecture. The ideas you will get for your own home alone are worth the cost.

5 out of 5 stars sweet book.......2003-09-07

While not an architect or builder, I am browsing various ideas and methods. This is a great book for getting all the flavors from concrete prefab and rammed-earth to wood-frame with copper exteriors. In one case, a pre-fabbed house is given a timeline picture page showing the construction progress to finish. The pictures are nearly perfect, both encompassing and detailed with briefs that are pretty informative for their length. It's the information that you want with little else. Materials, construction methods and in most cases, cost. Excellent diagrams and cross-sections too. Worth it for someone who wants to build but isn't sure about the materials and methods they want to use, as well as sighting some good ideas.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for Architects and Do-it Yourselfers alike!.......2001-01-08

The second covering houses and one of several in a series that highlight and describe the potential of American domestic architecture. It illustrates the possibilities and alternatives to the popular Martha Stewart/Bob Villa suburban style that has taken away so much recognition from American architects. Stunning photographs and simple detail drawings illustrate several different homes; each with it's own character.

If you are a do-it-yourself type or looking to hire an architect, this is a great place to start. This book will illustrate how a much a professionally designed house stands out from the Home Depot remodel or typical "custom" suburban home designed by a contractor.

If you are an architect, this is a great reference for residential projects illustrating rigorous use of materials and simplicity of concept, without the heavy "archispeak". It is also a great primer for potential clients, exposing them to the possibilities of design.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money........2003-05-26

After purchasing The New American House (Vol 1-3), The New American Cottage, and The New American Swimming Pool which are all excellant books, I ordered The New American Apartment and was severely disappointed.

I SENT THE BOOK BACK! (if that gives you any idea of my satisfaction.)

There are several interesting photos but unless you have several million dollars, the designs and concepts are so unapproachable to the average person that the book was useless for my needs. This is the same kind of stuff they show in Architectural Digest (as opposed to Fine Homebuilding.)

4 out of 5 stars its a visual feast!!.......1999-05-01

A must have book for a library collection of inspirational modern design. The Book outlines each architect's space with dramatic and all encompassing views along with drawings to further explain the concepts. It left me wanting more!

4 out of 5 stars A great source of inspiration.......1999-04-11

This is a very good looking lexicon from cover to cover, yet it is more of a starting point in the design mode than a technical manual. I usually don't spend much for books, but this is one exception I can make with little after thought.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative.......2007-09-27

I have admired Sueellen Ross's beautiful cat paintings for some time, and was delighted when this book was published. I am a cat artist myself, and good instruction books on how to paint cats are almost impossible to come by. Sueellen Ross has a very unique style which combines layers of ink, watercolour and coloured crayon, and builds a realistic and dramatic finished painting. The book shows step by step, not only how to paint cats, but also other animals, plants and furnishings. I tried using her techniques for a painting of my ginger cat in the washing basket, and was very pleased with the result. However, I feel that it was not quite as easy as Ms Ross claimed, and is most definitely not for beginners! This book will probably inspire you to give her techniques a go, and will therefore help to develop your art skills and knowledge. For those who are not painters, but enjoy good animal and feline art, this book will also serve as a good introduction to the work of Sueellen Ross and is a delight to look at.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent realism and creativity.......2007-04-08

The artwork is amazing. The best part for most I'm sure is her step by step instructions to create this work. She gives you instruction on her techniques that you could use on not just the work in the book but for your own work, based on your own reference material. It is realism at its best.

It is not for the beginner, you should be confident in your drawing skills, not just tracing or linework. You should know tonal value and be able to create the illusion of 3D...the better your drawings the better chance you have at succeeding with the techniques in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh watercolor techniques.......2007-01-12

Sueellen Ross has presented an excellent demonstration book on her special techniques in painting animals. As a watercolorist I learned quickly to ignore watercolor books that exhibit paintings I don't care for or am not inspired by. So it is my perception that Paint Radiant Realism in Watercolor, Ink & Colored Pencil, did inspire me to experiment using her techniques so that I could approach her desirable style.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2007-01-04

This book is amazing! For anyone who prefers the control of using a pencil-like tool to work with-whether it be a colored pencil, pen, or watercolor pencil-this book is a must-have. The techniques that the author uses in her paintings will inspire you to try her technique, or develop your own similar technique, to get the same realistic, yet whimsical, quality.
I, personally, like the sort of control that a pencil provides, and can see how this particular method can enrich my paintings. Although the precision of inking in the darkest areas may take some time, the depth it gives to the author's paintings is visually stunning and realistic. And her method of using watercolor as a wash to help fill in larger areas compensates for the amount of inking time.
I was almost finished with a painting in which I used only colored pencil when the book arrived, so I have yet to try the techniques. Even so, while I was working on the painting I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to make the time spent shorter and get the same, or better, results. I am happy with the depth created in the painting, but inking would have eliminated the need for, and the tedium of, building the layer after layer of color pencil that was necessary to achieve that depth. The use of watercolor would have also cut down on the time used to fill in the background areas. I will definitely try the author's technique on my next painting.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2006-06-02

I found this book to be expensive and wasn't sure if I should buy it, but it tempted me for so long that I ordered it eventually. I do not regret. There are many magnificent illustrations and very detailed instructions on how to achieve these results. Very unique approach to art and wonderful results. I have to warn however that if you are impratient type of person than this book is not for you. You have to have love for detail and accurate drawing to apreciate this mixed media approach. I recommend this book to all artists, who don't mind to spend great deal of time to achieve brilliant results.

If you're a photographer trying to earn a living from your work, The Photographer's Guide to Marketing and Self-Promotion may be the best investment you make. Maria Piscopo has been a photographer's representative for more than two decades, and she has honed her message at innumerable industry conferences and workshops. In brief but information-packed chapters, Piscopo explains how to define the type of work you do, research different categories of clients, and persuade them to hire you. She deals with the nitty-gritty of portfolio presentation (how much do you show?), writing the selling "script" (what do you say and how do you tailor it to your audience?), and negotiating costs. Other chapters discuss how to work with a rep and a marketing coordinator. Throughout the book, first-person accounts by successful photographers add welcome practical details. While the level of detail on most topics is unusually thorough (where else are you likely to read about how to leave a voice mail message for a potential client?), a few areas could profitably be expanded or tweaked. There is a lot more to be said about styles and pitfalls of Web marketing, and the chapter on press releases could use the cautionary advice of someone on the other side (a newspaper or magazine editor). And maybe the next edition could lose all those distracting exclamation marks. Piscopo's cheerful, down-to-earth style is plenty persuasive without them. --Cathy Curtis

1 out of 5 stars Substandard reading- Not worth your money.......2005-08-27

This book sounds like a sales person yelling in your ear. The author is NOT an experienced photographer, nor does the author offer any resonable, useful tips. Very outdated material also, from 1995-1999! Its not helpful for the serious digital or medium format photographer or even for an amateur. Its simply a waste of money. Amazon has better books for serious photographers for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Best photography marketing book I've ever read........2005-08-15

I really like this book a lot, and would recommend it to ANYone who is interested in learning more about photography marketing; more specifically, the different types of marketing.

It's written by a marketing specialist who works with photographers on marketing their own businesses. As a result, the book doesn't have many pictures, or a very interesting layout, but then again, it is a marketing book. I liked the testimonials given by professional photographers. They were very pertinent to the information provided, and gave the book more depth and application to real-life situations.

I would like this book a bit better if I were more interested in marketing, or if it made marketing sound a little more fun. It also wouldn't have hurt to add more photographs and color to the book. I'm a visual learner, and I think that may have helped me.

5 out of 5 stars Good Quality book, easy to read and understand.......2005-08-02

Even a novice with only a little bit of understanding of how the marketing and business aspects of life work, will find this book easy to understand. Its stragit forward approach with real life examples and situations makes me understand it and look back on the information for later.

The price of the book with the photographers market 2005 book makes it a deal!

3 out of 5 stars OK information.......2005-07-21

This book has some good information, but I was expecting a lot more. I would recommend "The Business of Studio Photography" by Lilley instead.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and sound guidance to help you go Pro!.......2005-01-14

This book offers sound practical advice that will help you take your business to the next level. Sure... you may be a great photographer, but effective marketing will get your work in front of the right people.

This book will help you achieve this goal. I occasionally re-read it and it's invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars The story picks up!.......2005-09-18

There's a lot going on in this volume. This volume is where the story really starts to pick up, and probably because of that, it's one of my favorite volumes. We finally introduce Subaru-kun, and thoroughly introduce Sei-chan, my favorite CLAMP character of all time. I know he appeared before, but you can't have Sei-chan w/o Subaru-kun and call either one introduced. It also reveals Kamui's choice and the effects of that choice. I won't reveal anything, but if you stop and think, you can probably figure it out.

Sei-chan and Subaru-kun's first fight is half of what makes this volume great. My two favorite characters not really fighting. The beginning is great, with both of them talking to each other w/o much hostility. The end is great too, with Subaru-kun angsting over Sei-chan. hehehe ^_^

Fun things: Sei-chan and Subaru's first fight, full of sakura petals, neither of them really putting up a fight, both of them looking scrumptious through the entire thing, and lovely little blood smears which don't disappear until the end of volume 9, the CCD boys (Nokoru, Suoh, and Akira) appearing, looking oh-so-bish, Kotori acting like she's completely lost her mind, and Kamui actually acting like he's going to do something other than just stand around. oh, and Fuuma's last moments as Fuuma *claps hand over mouth*

Not-so-fun things: Sorata calling Sei-chan "Guardian of the Cherry Blossom Burial Mound" (It's Sakurazukamori, people!! *kicks Viz*), some rather weird translations from Viz, and general confusion about which sword is which.

    5 out of 5 stars NICE :-).......2003-04-19

Uh....not much else I can say but this is a visual treat! EYE CANDY and a story deeper than....just about anything!!! Clamp is, by far, the best manga team ever! This manga is a turning point in the X/1999 series and is one that is needed in any collection... I have this book and I think this is one of the most essential part in the X/1999 series ... and you really can't NOT read this book if your looking to understand the story. OF COURSE you've gotta read the books before this one... but this book contains some sexy stuff (AKA FUMA/EVIL KAMUI) that any Clamp fan will want to take note of! If you like gore (lots and lots of blood) and some sexy yummies (FUMA...SUBARU) Ya gonna love this. ALSO! The first fight between Subaru and Seishiro!!! Anyone who is trying to follow Tokyo Babylon's story this is a HUGE part in the story....This manga is all around essential for any Clamp follower!

    5 out of 5 stars luminous!!.......2002-12-22

Clamp's art is incredible, with flowing details and beautifully drawn characters...they're the mangaka that keeps on giving! This one is especially yummy to those who enjoy seeing Kamui-tachi in bloody situations. I would recommend it to anyone, just for the art, but the poignant sadness of the story is another factor that keeps me turning the pages, to the ultimate destiny that will one day inevitably befall Earth.

New Yorker writer Lillian Ross made her reputation as a journalist on this 1950 profile of Ernest Hemingway. And she also made a lifelong friend of Hemingway on the head of it. Yet, strangely enough, despite her tremendous admiration for her subject--"the greatest American novelist and short-story writer of our day," she declares in the opening sentence--the piece was widely viewed as an assault. Some readers were "almost deliriously censorious," Ross writes of the book's original publication, "about the way Hemingway talked and the way he enjoyed himself and the way he was openly vulnerable."

Ross essentially made herself a fly on the wall during two days that Hemingway and his fourth wife, Mary, spent in New York City while en route to Venice, and she wrote down everything the great man said and did. Hemingway hit the airport bar within minutes of landing, proceeded (several shots of bourbon later) to his suite at the Sherry-Netherland, summoned his old friend Marlene Dietrich for caviar, champagne, and war stories, bought a winter coat at Abercrombie at his wife's insistence, looked at pictures in the Metropolitan Museum of Art while pulling on a flask, met with his publisher Charles Scribner, and ran into friends. And he talked ceaselessly, sometimes brilliantly, sometimes foolishly in a kind of pseudo-Native American dialect (dropping articles) about life and art, baseball and women, hunting and horseracing, writing and competing ("I beat Mr. Turgenev," he declares at one point. "Then I trained hard and I beat Mr. de Maupassant").

Whatever one feels about Hemingway, one has to admire Ross's extraordinary success in bringing the man to life in this slim volume. Her Portrait of Hemingway is worth any hundreds of chapters of standard, fact-filled biography in conveying a tangible, immediate sense of what "Papa" was really like. --David Laskin

    Book Description

On May 13, 1950, Lillian Ross's first portrait of Ernest Hemingway was published in The New Yorker. It was an account of two days Hemingway spent in New York in 1949 on his way from Havana to Europe. This candid and affectionate profile was tremendously controversial at the time, to the great surprise of its author. Booklist said, "The piece immediately conveys to the reader the kind of man Hemingway was--hard-hitting, warm, and exuberantly alive." It remains the classic eyewitness account of the legendary writer, and it is reproduced here with the preface Lillian Ross prepared for an edition of Portrait in 1961.

Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, and to celebrate the centenary of this event, Ms. Ross has written a second portrait of Hemingway for The New Yorker, detailing the friendship the two struck up after the completion of the first piece. It is included here in an amended form. Together, these two works establish the definitive sketch of one of America's greatest writers.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-05-31

As a true Hemingway fan, I found this book to be neither entertaining nor insightful... However, the afterword that follows it is quite interesting and contains a few fascinating stories. I recommend Hemingway's own book "A Moveable Feast" for anyone who wants to truly understand America's greatest writer.

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Non-Fiction.......2000-08-13

Lillian Ross has the eye and ear of a reporter and the writing ability of a distinguished novelist. This feature on Hemingway, originally a NEW YORKER piece, is a delight for fans of Ross and fans of Hemingway of which I can be counted as both.

The story begins as Miss Ross meets Hemingway at Idlewood Airport (now JFK) in New York City in 1950. Ross spends the next two days going to museums, shopping, and meeting Hemingway's friend Marlene Dietrich and Editor Charles Scribner.

She's so unobtrusive in the story, you forget that she was actually in the room. When Hemingway talks to her, it's like a character has stepped out of a novel to speak with the author. You get this feeling because "Papa" is so much himself that he doesn't seem to be hiding his true personality from a member of the press corps.

I learned a good deal about Papa in this short book. You will too.

5 out of 5 stars does what biographies of 'Papa' cannot.......2000-07-03

This slim volume covering a mere two days with Hemingway will take about an hour or two to read. However, it's merit is that it is presents us with a 'bird's eye-view' of Hemingway's later years, the alcholism, his relationship with his wife Mary, his son, and some of his old friends. It also gives us a glimpse of his feelings about his writing in his own words. For those who have enjoyed Hemingway's fiction and read biographies of his life, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Hemingway fans and fascinating overall........1999-08-04

Portrait is a glimpse into the life of Hemingway over a two-day period. For fans of Hemingway, this is a fascinating snapshot of the famous Hemingway bravado and an offering of the vulnerability and sensitivity flowing immediately under the gruff and overly-confident exterior. Hemingway's passion for art and alcohol is found here, and one can't help but be reminded of his earlier devotion to, and inspiration from, painting rendered in A Moveable Feast. Sadly, one also anticipates the later disability compounded by the excessive drinking that finally extinguished such a brilliant career. This book caused a commotion when it was first published because Hemingway came across as insensitive, but it is only the lazy reader not willing to dig a little deeper, and only the reader who allows the powerful prose of Ross to lull them into mere observation, who fails to recognize the whole of Hemingway's character. If you are a Hemingway fan, or you want to scratch the surface of the life of a great writer who showed no fear in displaying his faults as readily as his virtues, and you don't mind a few character quirks along the way, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable combination of objectivity and love........1999-07-26

It's a remarkable piece of work, both loving and accurate. If you don't like his kind of macho, I guess you could call the Portrait barbed; but she obviously loved it and him enough to win his trust. He opened up for her and, in the welcoming sense, took her in. I'm left full of wonder for the way she got his words, as well as his presence, down. You can see, too, how his early work, with its pared-down clarity, influenced her style. This is biography without conjecture -- biography at its best.

He wrote some of the best and most influential American prose of the 20th century. But even a cursory look at the marvelous photos, drawings, and paintings assembled for a National Portrait Gallery exhibition honoring Ernest Hemingway's centennial reminds readers that the author's enduring fame has at least as much to do with his riveting good looks, virile charisma, and macho lifestyle. This book of photos is buoyed by intelligent essays by curator Frederick Voss and Hemingway biographer Michael Reynolds that serve as cogent minibiographies of the man. They cover all the salient points: the great fiction, from The Sun Also Rises to The Old Man and the Sea; the four wives, subservient Hadley Richardson and Mary Welsh and Martha Gelhorn, the feminist exception; the energetic outdoor and public life that couldn't stave off bouts of depression that prompted his suicide in 1961. All the famous pictures are here: the 1934 shot of a cocky, mustachioed Hemingway kneeling with the horns of his kill from an African safari. The classic 1957 Karsh portrait of the writer as bearded éminence grise in a turtleneck sweater. But he isn't visible in the most haunting of all--a photo of his funeral, with a small group of mourners huddled against desolate hills and a pitch-black Idaho sky--an image whose existential starkness equals that of Hemingway's masterpieces. --Wendy Smith

5 out of 5 stars Portrait of the Artist in Pictures.......2007-06-20

After recently rereading A FAREWELL TO ARMS, I became interestesd in Hemingway again and revisted this book of photographs that I had purchased after having seen the National Portrait Gallery exhibit coinciding with the hundred birthday of Hemingway in 1999. This book accomplishes what few photography books do: it includes practically as much written information about the writer-- from the informative essay by Michael Reynolds to the well-documented captions that accompany the pictures-- as photographs, thus creating a mini-biography of the writer as well.

The lives of few writers of the 20th century were followed as closely by both the media and the general public; certainly no author was photographed more. There are pictures here of Hemingway by Robert Capa (1937); the most famous portrait by Yousuf Karsh (1957) and the shot by John Bryson (1958/58) of Hemingway with a most obvious comb-over. Also included are paintings and sketches of the writer in addition to pictures of his literary friends-- Fitzgerald, Joyce, Dos Passos et al.-- as well as photographs of his four wives and his first love, a Red Cross nurse, the inspiration for the character Catherine in A FAREWELL TO ARMS. You also get to see the covers of Hemingway's major novels as well.

Hemingway wanted to be the best writer of his generation. Whether or not he accomplished his goal, he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his short novel THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Considered tame by today's standards his novels were controversial during his time because of their profanity and sexual content. His editor at Scribner's insisted that he delete most of the profane language from his works, his own mother found his writing "filthy" and the Boston police seized the June 1929 issues of Scribner's magazine that contained the second installment of A FAREWELL TO ARMS from newsstands because of the "salacious" content.

PICTURING HEMINGWAY is a good introduction to a whole new generation interested in this writer as well as a nostalgic visit for already fans.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, riveting ... but little new.......2002-12-05

Ernest Hemingway found himself (or rather photographers found him) in some of the most diverse and engaging settings one might see a writer. From Key West to Africa to Idaho to Spain to Cuba to New York City ... he led a photogenic life. "Picturing Hemingway" does him justice with this collection, which is worth a hour or so paging through it. The most ardent fans of Hemingway, however, won't find a lot of new images to enlarge their view of the writer, even if this is worth adding to your shelf -- your likely sagging shelf -- of Hemingway biographical works.

3 out of 5 stars ...limited selection of pictures.......2002-04-19

This book was produced as a companion to the National Portrait Gallery's Hemingway centennial celebration. It is a handsome quarto. The book is only 160 pages and much of that is text explaining the pictures. I expected more pictures and was disappointed with this book. Having read several Hemingway
biographies and nearly all of his books I was disappointed that this book didn't even include everything I'd seen elsewhere. The recent Hemingway on Hunting compilation, for examples, contains many great pictures that are not included here. To give the editor credit, the pictures included are reproduced very
nicely. There are also some pictures included of the first edition dustjackets of many of Hemingway's classics. Inexplicably some of these dustjackets are shelfworn creased examples; I'm sure it would not have been impossible to find perfect examples to photograph for this book if some effort had been made. This is a book that is worth spending 30 minutes browsing through in a library but I can't recommend paying [money] dollars for it.

This volume is being produced to accompany an exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington, DC, June 18-October 3. Beyond simply another collection of pictures, this is more a visual biography revealed through family snapshots, paintings, and formal portraits with explanatory captions. It also includes book covers as well as images of famous friends like James Joyce, Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos plus a top-shelf essay by leading biographer Michael Reynolds on Hemingway as an icon. The perfect visual companion to the Hemingway centennial celebration. Highly recommended.--Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"

            Book Description

Ernest Hemingway's life was as romantic and exciting as anything in his novels and stories, and this magnificently illustrated large-format volume captures many of his best years. The text, recounting Hemingway's life and times between 1939 and 1960, is a remembrance by Norberto Fuentes, who was Hemingway's good friend during that period. In the book's vivid photographs, we see Hemingway on African safaris, in Venice with his wife Mary Welsh, fishing for marlin in the Gulf Stream, socializing at his favorite cafes, and relaxing at his homes in Cuba, Key West, and Idaho. Still other dramatic candid shots show Hemingway on movie sets with Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper, and Ingrid Bergman. The more than 150 candid black-and-white photos of Hemingway and friends at work and at play, were taken by his friend and associate, Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, and had never appeared anywhere until the publication of this book. Another 50 full-color photos taken more recently capture the different atmospheres of the writer's several homes.

            4 out of 5 stars Great Photo-Bio of Papa's Later Years.......2000-08-29

This coffee table book utilizes wonderful pictures of Ernest Hemingway to show "Papa" is numerous lights. Most pictures center around Hemingway in his years at the Finca Vigia. We see candids of Hemingway aboard the Pilar, or at work in his standing position in his Finca's tower. There are a few questionable facts.(They said that Hemingway's pet "Blackdog" was found around the Finca, when most scholars say he was rescued in Idaho). Still, this book is a must simply for the pictures alone. Out of numerous biographies about Hemingway, Fuentes chooses woderful candids I had never seen, plus wonderful photos of Hemingway's personal possesions, and the Finca as it is today. A must for Hemingway buffs.
