Book Description
The practical, comprehensive handbook to creating effective architectural drawings
In one beautifully illustrated volume, The Professional Practice of Architectural Working Drawings presents the full range of skills, concepts, principles, and applications needed to create a full set of architectural working drawings. This new Third Edition emphasizes the importance of communicating general design concepts through specific working drawings. Chapters proceed logically through each stage of development, beginning with site and foundation plans and progressing to elevations, building sections, and other drawings.
New features of this Third Edition include:
- Coverage of the latest CAD technologies and techniques
- Environmental and human design considerations
- Supplemental step-by-step instructions for complex chapters
- Ten case studies, including five fully evolved case studies
- Hundreds of additional computer-generated drawings and photographs, including three-dimensional models and full-size buildings shown in virtual space
- Tips for establishing a strategy for developing construction documents
This new edition also presents completely updated material on metric conversions, code analysis, masonry, and steel. Sets of working drawings for five different buildings are followed layer by layer from design concept through the finished construction documents. A companion Web site (www.wiley.com/go/wakita) includes summaries for each chapter, a glossary, review questions, laboratory problems, access to dozens of CAD drawings, a complete study guide, and much more.
The Professional Practice of Architectural Working Drawings, Third Edition is an invaluable book for students in architecture, construction, engineering, interior design, and environmental design programs, as well as beginning professionals in these fields.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-08-30
To chime in with the other reviewers, I am not exactly sure what is up with the one bad review, this book is excellent. I have read this book in its entirety and found that is very rich in content. The first section of the book covers various cad standards and conventions, however it is the latter part of the book that is pure gold. The book lays out the entire process of creating (as the name implies) architectural working drawings, and even gives examples of the development of the working drawings for various buildings of different constructions. It is in no way "out dated", some of the references to certain software and drafting technologies may be a bit stale, but the information contained in the book is timeless and applicable to both manual drafting, and CAD. In addition to this book I would also recommend the book on architectural detailing by the same author, as the two books make a good team.
From both the office and academia..........2006-08-02
I'm very surprised at the two star review below. This book is one of the most comprehensive and updated books on the topic of architectural working drawings to date. Each chapter is a literal list of things to do and strategies for preparing a full set of construction documents. There is even a CAD chapter and nearly 500 new CAD illustrations. Also, an appendix is available on the publishers website that has a comprehensive amount of CAD information. If you want more CAD information, google search "National CAD Standard". You're money is well spent on this book; look at the number of people who purchase it above 50%+ of the people who looked at this book and all others on the topic. Don't hesitate to buy it now :)
Last thing, Dr. Wakita's other books are just as informative. Check out "The Professional Practice of Architectural Detailing" for a well packed book of drawings and strategies.
very outdated book.......2005-09-07
This guide is based on a few specific projects which have little relevance to today's market. No outlines, guidelines, or checklists were available to help with the process of putting together a complete set of working drawings. If you are already in the field of architecture, this book is too basic and not applicable to more modern projects.
Great resource, even for CAD drafters.......2002-07-06
I bought this book when my younger brother started taking CAD classes to come work with me. I have found it to be an excellent resource, for the beginning draftsman, for putting together a set of plans. For the intermediate and advanced draftsman it is a valuable "checklist" book. The book only has one small section on CAD, but that is not the idea of the book.
This book will show you what is needed to be in a good set of plans. It has many examples of drawings and details and with good explanations for them. The explanations given also help you to understand what is being shown, but also why it is being shown. Having been in construction for over 20 years before I started drafting, I can say that the examples given are the types of drawings I wish came out to my jobs. You will be able to understand what information needs to be in your drawings, how to graphically show it. You will also be able to move around in the book and go to examples for whichever phase you are working on in your drawings and compare what you have done with what is given in the book.
No matter what level of draftsman you are, I would recommend this book. It will be an invaluable resource for you for years to come.
Great book that sets the standards for professionals!.......1998-01-31
This book sets the standards for professionals in the architecture field!!! Well done. I've never seen a book so comprehensive as this one for the field of architecture. This book does what Graphic Standards never did or CAN. It gives architects an easier way to communicate their ideas with effective working drawing techniques and detailing logic! A must-see for every student of architecture or professional who owns a drafting table...even applies to CAD drawings!!!

Excellent.......2007-05-27
This is not a how to book, but rather an exploration of the creative process. Well written, insightful and inspiring!
More of Carbonetti's gorgeous work--advice for creativity.......2001-11-21
This is not a painting how-to book. Making Pearls is Vermont artist Jeanne Carbonetti's attempt to verbalize her creative exercises she uses and teaches for her free style of watercolor.
If you are a fan of Carbonetti's paintings, there are many photos of her work in this book to drool and marvel over. There is one useful exercise--making a "creation cycle" using the seven colors based on the India Chakras. Her theory is that we are always within the cycle of creation and need to recognize where we are in the cycle to be in rhythm with the flow. If you can't take one of her workshops, using this book can lead you through the exercise.
Why "Making Pearls" as a title? This is a metaphor for taking irritations of daily life and making something beautiful from them, just as the oyster takes a grain of sand and creates a pearl.

Severely dated, but still has some validity for westerners living in Japan.......2006-08-18
Being immersed in another culture is a difficult thing, and when you have to conduct business as well, it can be intimidating, as there are so many ways to make costly errors. This book uses cartoons to illustrate daily life in Japan and how the western mind processes it. It uses a fictitious family of a husband, wife and two children under ten to demonstrate the problems and joys of living in Japan.
It all starts with finding a place to live, which can be one of the biggest culture shocks. Apartments in Japan are smaller and congestion everywhere is a part of life. One of my favorite cartoons is called "Still Life With Lily", which shows a lily on a shelf next to a convenience place or toilet. However, one must temper the humor with the realization that this book was written in 1955, so it does not reflect much of what is modern Japan. Nevertheless, it is amusing and does provide some significant pointers on how westerners can adapt to live in a country where the culture is so different from what they are familiar with.
Interesting.......2004-01-04
It's interesting to see this book 50 years after first written and to see what has (and hasn't) changed in the experience of an ex-pat family in Tokyo. The book simply contains several vignettes of life in Japan, as portrayed by the author's cartoons and captions. Interesting and amusing but not comprehensive or insightful enough for me to give it more than an average rating.
culture shock.......2003-07-01
This very funny bookis about an American family lving in Japan and trying to accustom themselves to the differences in cultures. M's Cleveland uses black and white drawings to show the family, the Wests, in various situations.
One particularly funny one is Mr West goesto a geisha party. Mrs West's imagination runs overtime, imagining her husband enjoying himself more than she think he should. The reality of it is quite an eye opener. All the cartoons are funny but also educational.
I recommend this book highly for those of you how Japan appeared to Americans living there in the 1950s.

Book Description
In one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe, in the region known as Périgord in southwest France, castles crown the hills, and the surrounding villages seem carved all of a piece out of the local stone. In 1985, in the shadow of one of these medieval castles, Betsy Draine and Michael Hinden fell in love with a small stone house that became their summer home.
Like any romance, this one has had its ups and downs, and Betsy and Michael chart its course in this delightful memoir. They offer an intimate glimpse of a region little known to Americans—the Dordogne valley, its castles and prehistoric art, its walking trails and earthy cuisine—and describe the charms and mishaps of setting up housekeeping thousands of miles from home.
Along with the region’s terrain and culture, A Castle in the Backyard introduces us to the people of Périgord—the castle’s proprietor, the village children, the gossipy real-estate agent, the rascally mason, and the ninety-year-old widow with a tale of heartbreak. A celebration of a place and its people, the book also reflects on the future of historic Périgord as tourism and development pose a challenge to its graceful way of life.
Winner of the 2002 August Derleth Nonfiction Award, awarded by the Council for Wisconsin Writers
Customer Reviews:
Take a joyful journey to a French summer home.......2006-08-17
This book is a charming joy. The authors' successful search for a modest summer home in France will take the reader on their own dreamy journey, exploring what it would be like to live in a French country village and to succeed in making friends with the villagers. Great insights into what rural French folks are really like, and how to make them your friends. The book also underscores the importance of finding what is truly important to you in your life.
what a great story.......2006-08-01
very entertaining book about buying a vacation home in France. I love sw france--the food, the villages, the people. This book is about an American couple from Wisconsin--looking for a house in SW France-- buying a house and then living there for the summers. They become friendly with the residents of the small village. They tell of how they were invited to dinner parties ---the food that was served-- the people the conversations etc......Its great! I really enjoyed it.
follow your dream!.......2006-05-07
I bought this book while we were looking for our own house in the Dordogne (most wonderful spot on earth -- go, see it for yourself!), and found it both comforting and helpful (as well as funny, touching and insightful). We found our own house a short time later (in Aubeterre sur Dronne, a village in the Charente just across the border from the Dordogne), and are giving this book to friends and family to help explain the experience and the lure of southwestern France.
A realistic fantasy.......2006-01-31
Like Mayle's YEAR in PROVENCE and Mayes' UNDER the TUSCAN SUN, this title follows a couple through the pleasures and pitfalls of buying a vacation home in a lovely, exotic locale. Draine and Hinden, both professors at UW Madison, purchase a home in southwest France. Much more low-key than the Mayle and Mayes books mentioned, CASTLE in the BACKYARD has considerably fewer pages devoted to construction pitfalls and perils as well as a cast of much less colorful characters. All in all, CASTLE seems like a much more realistic story than other tales of buying a dream home in a dream location, which in my opinion, made this tale a bit less compelling a read.
This book gives the reader the "real" view of France and the French.......2005-09-24
The title might lead the reader to think that this book is about how to buy real estate in France. It does provide some very helpful tips in that regard, but the book goes well beyond buying real estate. The authors provide insight into how cultures can interreact. The book is an absolute must for anyone interested in the nuances of the French as well as getting eyewitness tour of the Dordogne region. The book is educational, poignant at times, funny at times and always a joy to read.
