Book Description

Born out of fantasy and speculation, designed for fun and profit, Miami Beach has been, from its inception, a city of mythical composition. Its famed Art Deco District was designated a Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and today the area is basking in a revival of interest and attention. Nevertheless, while fashion photographers and entrepreneurs, artists, developers, restaurateurs and club owners flock to the neighborhood, it is still struggling, after years of deterioration and neglect, to recreate itself out of its own forgotten glamour. Despite a new palette of confectionery colors and the renovation of numerous buildings, the Art Deco District remains in need of urban cultivation, of a reinterpretation that transcends its original resort identity. Author Laura Cerwinske introduces Tropical Deco: The Architecture and Design of Old Miami Beach by discussing both the area's past and its future. Throughout her comprehensive exploration of the most concentrated neighborhood of Art Deco buildings in the world, she details the style's evolution and examines its design.

Tropical Deco: The Architecture and Design of Old Miami Beach treats its readers to a delightful view of a unique adaption of a historic architectural style. For, while Miami Beach's Art Deco architecture derives its stylistic roots from the streamlined and electric visions of the cosmopolitan North, Tropical Deco design is much softer and more temperately seductive. These are buildings whose narrative and evocative nature is at once sophisticated, naive and filled with humor.

5 out of 5 stars Love My-amah Deco!.......2006-03-20

I found this book years ago at the Delray Beach library. It had been checked out so many times that it was in pretty ragtag shape. I decided to order my own copy just so I could gaze at deco whenever I wanted to. This book is a fantastic primer for anyone interested in Miami. Read this book and then take it with you on the Miami art deco tour; you will be that much more prepared to appreciate the tour and prepared to ask questions to your knowledgeable tour guide.

4 out of 5 stars Remembering Old Miami Beach.......2005-01-08

This book has been around for 20+ years and is mostly photographs taken in late 1970's and early 1980's. Much has changed in the ensuing 25 years. Many of the buildings have since been repainted, as in the Carlyle featured on the cover. Some, as with the graceful St Moritz, have been restored (today it looks much different, and better, then in this book's photograph). Best of all this book documents some things that are no longer there as in the wonderful photos of the Tiffany murals, the old Cinema Theatre interior. and the demolished Sands Hotel.

The book is broken up into chapters based on architectural details (Facades, Doorways, Materials, etc). The text is well written and gives one a good grounding in the Miami Beach Deco architectural style. Best of all it is filled with wonderful photographs. A great historical record of a time when the Art Deco District had just been formed.

5 out of 5 stars Radiant Virtual Visit.......2003-07-26

Open the pages of this book to feel the heat on your face and sand between your toes. You're looking at some of the most whimsical and delightful architecture in the world. Imagine approaching this country for the first time from the water and being greeted by these buildings. They are a testament to this country's creativity, humor and ability to dream into the future. And the best part is that they are so well preserved so that you can experience them in person inside and out.

5 out of 5 stars For what I got this for, Its a 5.........2003-08-06

I didn't buy this as a study in the complex science of the study of color. I am an artist and I don't need this to choose a color scheme for a drawing...

      however...

When faced with trying to decide what to paint the interior of my house. I bought this book. I was able to choose colors for the wall, ceiling and trim and see how they looked together...and than take the book (which is a fairly small paperback) with me to the paint store. Perhaps painting one room isn't a challenge but trying to manage colors thoughout a house was daunting to me...This book allowed me to visualize them together and apart before I bought the paint.

I didn't find the text to be especially sophisticated but I didn't buy the book for the text. I bought the book only for the color examples and there are alot of them. The book has held together extreamly well and the pages are heavy and glossy. The binding is intact after several years.

For the price, for what I bought this for, this was an excellent investment.

1 out of 5 stars An insult to any but the color-blind........2001-01-09

This book seems to be for "color" ......... Color Harmony 2 is an absurdly shallow and garish overview of one of the most sacred realms in art (and the human sensory experience): color. The author has the arrogance to make ridiculous statements about color--"rules" that we are expected to believe without context or proof. Consider these quotes, "Color combinations using yellow-orange or amber are the most welcoming." What??? And, "Elegant color combinations use only the palest tints" (a statement too absurd for comment). This is a heartless book. Look elsewhere for inspiration!

3 out of 5 stars Thin on plot but rich in taste!.......1999-06-10

I'm not sure how appropriate this book is for the under-fourteen set. It seems the author had 82 Gremlins, because the drawings are all in marker and the plot has too many twists and turns. While this may seem like a fine how-do-you-do to most, other may see it the other way, or maybe not.

Color Harmony is bound, it has pages, it has both a back and a front cover, so I have to give it a sterling, or at least a pound, like with a mallet. 5 o'clock shadow is just the sort of thing to make you feel warm, but if your desk is tidy, you might not notice the squid.

Overall, detournement is humorous and does something, even if its effects don't strike you until much later. Color terrorists and small snails should beware!

I have Color Harmony 2 without the CD. It is a great book (5 stars in my opinion). Therefor I also got the one with the CD.

THE CD DOES NOT RUN ON WINDOWS XP!!!!!!

There is no update available from Rockport publishing.

      2 out of 5 stars Palette Picker.......2001-10-05

This book is ok for the beginner, but I should have bought something more like the Designers Guide to Color Series. First Color Harmony 2 is basic art class. Second the cd rom is not what I thought it would be. I was expecting something more like a paint palette where I could create, or mix my own colors and then have the software comeup with the complementary, split-complementary, analagous combinations etc. Instead I am limited to the 106 individual programmed colors. So I was really disappointed. And didn't think it was worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on color combinations, must-have for desingers.......2001-07-23

This is the best book on color I have found. It is a must have for anyone who has ever been confused about matching colors and creating the right mood. Though I was already fairly confident working with color, this book helped me a great deal by letting me see a wide variety of color combinations together.

The book begins by discussing the color wheel. This includes the facets of color such as hot, cold, light, dark, pale, bright, warm and cool as well as a great explanation of all the different color schemes. It is divided into over 20 different themes including romantic, friendly, earthy, fresh, calm, traditional, professional, magical, classic, tropical and energetic. For each of these themes a set of color schemes including monochromatic, primary, complementary, split-complementary, analogous, spilt, clash and neutral is shown. A brief tips section for using the themes in graphic design, interiors and fine art is also provided. In the back of the book there is a process color conversion chart that gives the CMYK values for each of the 106 colors used. Swatches that you can cut out are included. This is very useful for graphic designers.

A very helpful and versatile CD is included with this book as well. It allows you sort by color scheme or theme. You can also pick a color and then see all the color schemes that will work with it. Each color scheme is shown in several different forms and against black, white and gray. One of a color scheme's colors can be made bigger to be used as a background to the others as well. Colors can be saved and added to custom lists and exported to popular graphics programs like Photoshop and PageMaker. The color DIC number as well as RGB and CMYK values are also given.

The program does have some minor limitations. It can only search one aspect at a time. For instance you can't search for a rich theme with yellow. Also, if you search by color or color scheme you can't find out which theme set it originally belonged too. I found it a little hard to install and use at first as well.

This book and Color Harmony Workbook are pretty much identical in content. However, this one is smaller and contains a CD while the other has tear-out swatches. Because I was more interested in decorating my home the workbook was more useful to me. For a web or graphic designer using computers a lot this version will probably be of more help. If I had to select only one color book, this one or Color Harmony Workbook would be my first choice.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but the CD is severely outdated........2000-09-07

While I found the book to be useful, especially in the 'classic' swatch sections, the 'trendy' area is a bit outdated, being it's six years old.

Also, you're better off buying the version without the CD. Be cautioned, the CD is old, written for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, uses a primitive 'drag folder onto your hard drive, click file and choose program to associate with' install procedure, and uses an included, older version of Oracle Media Objects player to run...it will not work on Windows NT 4.

3 out of 5 stars Two Color Harmony 2's are the same book.......2000-06-22

There's a lot of confusion about the two versions of Color Harmony 2 because the difference seems to be the CD -- both versions credit Bride M. Whelan as author; the less expensive version doesn't come with the CD (which I haven't used).

The comments on color combinations have been helpful in convincing client/coworkers -- "but this is a Professional palette!" The book's palettes can be a useful starting place.

One caveat: written in 1994, the New Trends section is a bit dated, unfortunately.

This takes place fiften years after Zero Girl One . Tim has a daughter now, Nikki, about the same age as when he first met Amy. She's also about as messed up as Amy was, and that's saying some. Like then-Amy, Nikki has a lot of questions about her emerging sexuality, but they're very different questions than Amy's ever were. Her friend Rat (as if Nikki could have real friends) probably has the answers, but Nikki's not asking her.

It turns out that Nikki is pretty special, too, as special as Amy ever was. Somehow, Amy reappears, and acts as the Nikki's counselor, or big sister, or guardian angel, or some such. That guard thing helps when Nikki's deceased mother shows up. I mean, most teeangers have trouble with their parents but this relationship really needs work - she wants to connect with her daughter, but she's just such a square.

The first Zero Girl had visual style, novelty, and flair. Although the visual style is a good as ever and the sttitude is there, the flair somehow flamed out.

4 out of 5 stars For all those who wonder about Steinem.......2000-07-10

A sympathetic biography of one of the most famous leaders in the women's movement. According to Heilbrun, Steinem's beauty and ability to remain constantly in the public eye have been a constant source of irritation to other feminists. She presents Steinmen as a slightly naive, well-intentioned and empathetic individual who never intended to lead the feminist movement and indeed would have preferred remaining in the shadows as a reporter and writer.

                    5 out of 5 stars An inspiration.......2000-06-18

Growing up in the early 80's, I had a vauge idea who Gloria Steinem was and what she did. I was delighted to pick up this book and read the first (and probaly most accurate)book on such a revolutionary leader.

Denounced by the extreme right and extreme left, Steinem's life has taken her from Ohio to Massachusetts to India, Washington DC and NY. Having cofounded Ms. the National Women's Political Caucus, the Women's Action Alliance and Voters for Choice, Steinem is truly an example of a good role model.

Heilbrum's superb prose takes us into the infamous resentment born by Betty Friedan and Kathie Sarahchild. Although both of these women are famous in their own right, their inexcusable and childish tantrums undid their own feminist reputation without any help from Steinem. Also deserving of their repuation is Betty Harris who's paranoid delusions and lax work ethic jepordaized the working environment at the early MS. Steinem is a saint for having dealt with these crazies and still keeping cool.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific and enlightening book!.......1998-06-28

I have admired Gloria Steinem since I came to this country in the 70's to go to college. She has had to make some tough choices in her life and I respect her greatly for the path she took. I particularly liked to read about her early years, her childhood and family, prior to the more public New York life of the sophisticated writer and feminist persona she became. After reading this book, I feel that I understand much better where her strong motivation came from. The author deserves much praise for this biography.
