Book Description

From the first diner in 1872 to the "rediscovery" of diners in the 1990s, Richard J. S. Gutman's American Diner Then and Now covers the history, architecture, menus, and the appeal of this uniquely American creation. With 275 photographs in color and black and white, this book is the landmark work on its subject, a revised and expanded edition of Gutman's classic American Diner--the book, published in 1979, that inspired people to buy, restore, and reopen diners across the country. This edition includes a state-by-state directory, "Where the Diners Are," listing locations for currently operating diners.

5 out of 5 stars The Best book I,ve read about The Restaurant business!.......2005-06-28

What I like best is the Pictures of all those Stainless Steel Diners from The 40,s & 50,s.

Also what I like about this Book is their listing of at least
MOST of the Diner Builders from the past & present.

For I plan to very soon put up a Diner like that at my own
Home City & it gave me some tips & pointers on what a Diner should be & not to be.

5 out of 5 stars A complete history of diners.......2005-03-19

As the author of this book, I beg to differ with the reviewer who said there are no menus reproduced. In fact, five typical menus are illustrated, dating from the "dog wagons" of the 1890s to the "blue plate specials" featured in the 1950s and '60s.

This is not meant to be a cookbook or recipe source for diner food, but it does list hundreds of diners and their addresses where the reader can go and sample the real thing.

This is a history of diners that traces their development from horse-drawn lunch wagons to the neon-trimmed, stainless steel diners of today.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-05-15

Not a single menu photo or recipe graces the pages of this book. So little food info is included, in fact, that this book is just a dry recitation about the diner structures themselves, and the occasional interesting tidbit about the people who owned them. This leaves you hungry to know about the food they served. After all, the food is what diners were all about. If you want a diner history WITH menus and recipes, this is not the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars 4.9 stars.......2000-12-11

This is actually the third edition of this work. In 1979, Gutman took the plunge with the simply titled "American Diner" published in hardback by Harper & Row. Done in collaboration with Elliott Kaufman and David Slovic, it was shorter and more loosely organized than the later edition, but a nice and welcome diner book at a time when there still weren't many such books around. In 1993 Gutman came out with "American Diner, Then and Now" which sported revised and substantially enlarged text and better-integrated photos (the Kaufman photo portfolios had also been dropped). This revamped '93 version was a high-water mark for diner books, a now numerous field. With it's perfect balance between individual diner stories ("dinerlore"), photos, and history, and great attention to detail which bespeaks a real love of the subject, this has been an unofficial bible for diner afficionados for the last 7 years.

Now here is the 2000 edition, published in paperback by Johns Hopkins (apparently Barry Levinson's hometown has more interest in diners than the folks at Harper). This is basically just a reprint of the 1993 edition, with a different cover, a new introduction, and a few names added to the diner index at the end. While on the one hand it's great that this modern classic is available again (it had been out of print for several years) I had hoped that there would be some new material in it. To be sure, this book still teaches you how to tell a Paramount from a Mountain View, or a Fodero from a Worcester Lunch Car, and makes a fine gift (Christmas or otherwise) for someone who doesn't have the '93 edition. Nevertheless, at the risk of sounding like an ingrate, I would have to say I slightly prefer the '93 edition, mainly because the cover photo, an interior shot of a restored Worcester Lunch Car, with all that luscious wood, is more attractive than the rather bland shot of Ford's Diner that graces the cover of the 2000 edition. But make no mistake, if you don't have any diner books and are looking for a good one, this is THE one to get----and if you've already got five other diner books, you should still get this, as it has the clearest explication of American diner history you're ever likely to read.

5 out of 5 stars The Diner Bible.......2000-11-18

Gutman did it again - his updated study of Diners is the cornerstone of any roadside fan's book collection. If you only have room for one book on Diners, THIS IS THE BOOK. Lots of great pictures and stories from the early lunch wagons to the new super diners.

    5 out of 5 stars Serendipity.......2003-01-12

I am a teacher of gifted and talented students. The title of this book invites reading, as creativity is something we all seek in so many different ways. CREATIVE UTOPIA is a sincere and honest conversation with the author. Theo William's book (~ on paper that is silk to your fingers and its print, graphics, pictures, and color soothing for reading and calming to the soul) differs from many books of its nature. In many self help books, you read and read, and if you are lucky, you might find some advice in the last chapter. In CREATIVE UTOPIA, you learn and rediscover a potpourri of strategies from the first to last chapter that stimulates creativity. Theo opens your mind to different forms of creativity, some familiar, some not. If a reader wants more information, a plethora of popular resources Theo Williams has researched is offered - making just the bibliography she includes for each topic - alone - the best reason to purchase this book! Although the book is intended for a graphic design artist, I recommend this book to anyone seeking creativity and needing that extra boost of encouragement to realize creative potential. CREATIVE UTOPIA makes a great gift to yourself or a friend. Its quick read leaves you more time for your own unique creative powers. I have referred back for advice in this book of information repeatedly, especially the chapters on Fateful Encounters, Feng Shui, and Seeing Color Differently. In today's need for realization and simplicity, CREATIVE UTOPIA is my serendipity!

1 out of 5 stars Not very creative.......2002-09-15

Let me start by saying that I rarely read "self-help" books because I think they usually just state the obvious and helping yourself requres commitment, not ideas. Most people know how to help themselves. From the description I thought this book was more of an activity book rather than a self-help. I was wrong.

But even as a self-help book, I thought this one was lacking. I read this book in one setting too. Not because it was wonderful but rather because it lacked anything of substance. It has an entire chapter devoted to turning off you cell phone and other electronic devices. I thought you just had to hit the "power off" button. The back cover said, "Stimulate confidence with personality tests." But that chapter just describes different tests. I thought there would be at least one test included instead of a commercial for the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

Also this book is overpriced. Buy a blank journal and start writing or drawing ANYTHING. And save the money you would have spent on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth Every Penny!.......2002-06-06

Creative Utopia by Theo Stephan Williams was a wonderful book which proves that yes, you can read a design book in one sitting and not be able to put it down. I have a library of books that offer creativity advice and I use many of them for inspiration and reference. However, this book was very diffrent. It pulled me in and I truly read it from cover to cover in one sitting.

What I liked the most was how Theo Williams was able to speak with you through her book as if she was sitting next to you. Her down-to-earth advice and creative inspiration ideas were insightful and I'm already applying several of them while working on a very large and demanding project.

You won't regret this purchase, I promise!

4 out of 5 stars One of Marvel's most likable characters gets her first trade.......2007-09-07

I loved this book a lot more back when it first released. It is gorgeous to look at and contains some of Byrne's best panels from that period. The story isn't too hot. There is a major development for the character (Spoiler: She lost her ability revert to her "normal" self) and the book is historically important for that reason. Jen has a few good jokes and - as I said - the art is fantastic. Jennifer "She-Hulk" Walters was Byrne's muse at the time and he put a ton of effort into making her the most beautiful woman he's ever drawn.

But the more mature I've become (i.e., the less infatuated with a beautiful green comic book character I became) the more puerile and prurient this book feels. Half the story is an excuse to get Jennifer out of her clothes then bound and tortured naked. That Byrne tries to excuse this by putting the blame on the leering villain is mere flimsy misdirection. Byrne was pandering and fantasizing all at once.

If you can, find copies of Byrne's original run on She-Hulk's monthly comic from the early '90s. It was extremely funny and original (Jen knew she was in a comic book and complained to Byrne for pitting her against lame villains from the 60s and 70s).

        5 out of 5 stars Ain't She Un-Glamo-Rays!.......2003-12-12

This just may be the issue of John Byrne's amazing "Fantastic Four" comic book run you possibly missed. Tied in directly to the comic book series (as many of Marvel's graphic novels were) this lavishly illustrated oversize work is severely underrated and never re-printed outside of this format.
The story is a little odd, as it deals with a herd of radioactive roaches (yes, you read that right) taking over the S.H.I.E.L.D. heli-carrier by possessing one of its top agents. Shulkie is called in because she is a member of the F.F. as well as being very well accustomed to the effects radiation can have on a body. And what a body (more on that in a sec). The roaches are vanquished and national security is saved, but not before She-Hulk is bombarded with radiation once again thus preventing her from ever returning to her normal everyday alter-ego, Jennifer Walters.
This book is a key moment for the Incredible Hulk's less famous (but much cuter cousin) and shouldn't be missed. Byrne's art plays beautifully in this larger format and She-Hulk has never looked better. I was about 14 when I first read this comic, and She-Hulk immediately was catapulted to uber-babe status based on this work. And I still enjoy the work (albeit for different reasons) to this day. Buy it! It's cheap! No F.F. collection is complete without it!

On the outside they seem to be a picture perfect American family. Ted and Amanda are both business-professionals who enjoy a high standard of living. Though neither of them wants to admit it, they silently understand that their marriage is at a fragile crossroad, and it is their son, Thane, who holds them united. Thane, a college-student who revels in his newfound freedom, begins to form a set of independent ideologies that put him at odds with others in his family. His little sister Annie, a pretty young girl in her sophomore year in high school, aware of her blossoming curves but not sure how to behave in them, is preoccupied with her desire to fit in with the popular cliques.

When circumstances throw this family into the confining and stifling quarters of a remote and backwards Greek village, they are befriended by an old Greek man with the memory of an elephant, his dynamic and busy-body sister-in-law, his senile wife, a young beautiful village girl and a newfound cousin and friend. As these dissimilar individuals labor together to uncover dark secrets that transpired in their village during the Second World War and the Greek Civil War that followed, neither the Greeks nor the Americans are able to foresee how startling revelations will cause them to reevaluate the way they view foreigners, friendships, and family.

_Wild Sage_ by Melissa Orme is a striking novel which takes an affluent American family to the Greek island of Lesbos in search of Ted Pallis' shadowy heritage. Amanda Pallis, a successful lawyer who has dominated her husband, son and daughter for years, undergoes a subtle but significant change contronting the primitive simplicity and beauty of the Greek island. The members of my book group appreciated the character development of the family and their village counterparts. The author skillfully handles the suspenseful unravelling of the mystery of their grandfather's deeds during World War II and the Greek civil war following it. An added bonus are the wonderful descriptions of the mountains, ruins and flora of the island of Lesbos.
