Book Description
Known as "the bible" to Los Angeles architecture scholars and enthusiasts, Robert Winter and David Gebhard's groundbreaking guide to architecture in the greater Los Angeles area is updated and revised once again. From Art Deco to Beaux-Arts, Spanish Colonial to Mission Revival, Winter discusses an impressive variety of architectural styles in this popular guide that he co-authored with the late David Gebhard. New buildings and sites have been added, along with all new photography. Considered the most thorough L.A. architecture guide ever written, this new edition features the best of the past and present, from Charles and Henry Greene's Gamble House to Frank Gehry's Disney Philharmonic Hall. This was, and is again, a must-have guide to a diverse and architecturally rich area. Robert Winter is a recognized architectural historian who lives in Los Angeles, and has led architectural tours through the Los Angeles area since 1965. He is a professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

Lots of Modernism.......2007-03-12
This guide is about as good as one can expect for such an incredibly vast urban area. Lots of modernism. Very short entries. Only about one building in five comes with a photograph. Covers all of Los Angeles County, but nothing from Orange, Ventura, Riverside or San Bernardino counties.
L.A. Architecture.......2006-11-03
The book goes deep into detailing each of the buildings...It was definetely a good purchase. However, maybe just for architects, not listings of cool design bars or clubs, restaurants, etc. more the hardcore stuff like neutra, Lautner, case study, Eric Owen Moss, etc. but a lot of info. a very good source of information Very satisfy with my purchase. Spent 5 days in L.A. and got a lot covered thanks to this one.
Could have and should have been better.......2005-09-21
This book is a major disappointment, it is hardly thorough and tries to cover to much ground and in doing so really does not cover anything. The book has very few pictures, which is so odd in guide of this kind, all you get is short discriptions of each building and I guess from this you are suppose to glean the image of the building, uh o.k. This really is the worst city architecture guide I have come across, I usually love these guides, I have reviewed several and have given them high marks, I love L.A., I think that is why I am so disappointed in this particular book. I had expected so much more, L.A. has so many interesting buildings, it's a shame that it does not have an architectural guide to match. Hopefully someday someone will write a guide deserving of the title of this book; the city of angels desevers better, heck Buffalo deserves better than this.
An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles.......2004-04-18
The long-awaited fifth edition of an LA guide that's often called "the bible" is a major disappointment. Robert Winter is a perceptive scholar of Victoriana and arts and crafts, but he sensibly left modernism to his collaborator, the late David Gebhard. Now he has attempted to do it all, by providing entries on key buildings of the 1990s that he neither likes nor understands, and the result is embarrassing. Gehry, Maltzan, Mayne, Moss, Pei, and Yazdani will be surprised to find themselves bundled together under the label "Neo-Expressionism (Postmodernism)." Disney Hall, which is pictured on the cover, is described in terms of what happened ten years ago (plus cloddish public reactions to the first pictures of the model); there's not a sentence on the completed building. Other adventurous work is dismissed as "very strange." A long-winded entry on the Getty reads like a chatty letter to a friend; most are absurdly brief. The revisions add almost nothing, and are woefully incomplete; the publisher is guilty of gross negligence for not wielding an editorial pencil. Earlier selections have been edited, but the William Cameron Menzies house in Beverly Hills is still there, even though it was demolished three editions ago, along with Gehry's Venice restaurant, Rebecca's. The original 97 percent of the guide remains invaluable and engaging. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

Great Promise With Plenty of Problems.......2001-03-29
This book is a great resource for those interested in architecture in Los Angeles, but it has MAJOR problems. Not only are the maps inaccurate about 50% of the time (wrong intersection, wrong place along a street, or just plain wrong), but I have also found several listings for which the street address is wrong, including one for which the wrong street name is given. I have also searched for buildings only to realize that they have been demolished. While Los Angeles has gone through a lot of changes in the last few years, several of the buildings on question were demolished before this edition came out. So if you going to use this book to discover architecturally significant buildings, bring along a good map, a great sense of direction and allow plenty of time, you're going to need all of those to overcome the mistakes made by the authors.

If Amazon won't do a search, check out William Stout Architectural Books at 804 Montgomery St., San Francisco, CA 94133. tel 415/391-6757; fax 415/989-2341. I'm about to take an afternoon constitutional over there, enjoy the sunshine and mild breezes, schmooze with Bill Stout for a bit, and leave with book in hand and a smile on my face. Meanwhile, I'll be supporting one of the finest architectural bookstores in the world. Happy reading.
why won't amazon do a books search for this title?.......1999-05-03
this is a unique, one-of-a-kind guide to l.a. architecture, from the 20s (maybe earlier) to the 60s or 70s. pictures, addresses, etc. if anyone has a copy, i'll buy it. i can't find it anywhere and apparently, amazon won't do a search for it.

Book Description
The definitive L.A. experience may include a shopping spree or a celebrity sighting, but it will certainly involve a car. Without a complex network of subways and buses providing access to points of interest throughout the city, visitors to L.A. and Angelenos alike must spend much of their time navigating the city's vast but often-frustrating freeway system, away from the ground and the most endearing aspects of the city. Cruising L.A., the first driver's companion guidebook to Los Angeles, features an expertly guided seven-day driving route through L.A.'s most scenic neighborhoods, exploring their most vital and unique cultural and architectural features.

Inspiring for students and professionals.......2001-02-01
This is a much needed and appreciated book on clear and consice communication for students writing on their design projects, design statements for themselves about their portfolios, cover letters for employment purposes, not to mention all the aspects of proposals, business communication, applications, brochures, etc. As an educator in the design arts for over 25 years, I am especially happy to have this resource to share with design students and also find much useful information included for myself. Thanks for a great addition to my design library!

dowels, metal, and grommets, oh my! *yawn*.......2007-06-04
This book is so often mentioned and recommended that I bought it. I have produced some hand-built portfolios of my own, and was looking for more inspiration and practical advice. Instead, I found poor images, much of it in black and white, and the work in the portfolios is more interesting than the portfolios themselves.
This is heavily geared to architects and also to those with the means to have professional printing and a huge cash outlay for materials, cases, etc. I think some of the advice is good, but really for the un-initiated student, not professionals. A professional already knows that if the portfolio is sloppy, that it will not speak well of the designer and that a well-designed portfolio is an extra endorsement for the designer above and beyod the contents. There is little better advice/information in this book than that.
The portfolios showcased are very similar to each other, and there is little that can be produced by someone at home with a computer and a printer. I can tell you from my own experience that there is a lot you can do with a little elbow grease and less reliance on professionally assembled pieces.
A little advice of my own: A portfolio must showcase the work, must not detract from the quality of the work, and must be either changeable or expendable. Your portfolio should not be stagnant, but evolving with the new wonderful things you're doing and adding! Too few of the examples in this book provide for leave-behnids, inclusion of resumes, and the evolution of the contents.
Portfolio Design, Third Edition.......2007-02-18
"Whether you work in architecture, urban planning, landscape design/architecture, or interior design, a finely tailored portfolio is the most important element to include in your application for graduate school, a design grant or competition, or bring to a job interview. In addition to showing you how to assemble a portfolio that will display your talents and qualifications to the best advantage, the third edition of Portfolio Design adds a chapter on digital strategies, discussing all the elements necessary to bring your work together in a digital format. Also new in this edition is commentary and analysis of selected student portfolios by three experienced professionals who offers unique insights to help you develop your own portfolio.
From formats, bindings, and cases to reproduction techniques, content, style, sequencing, multimedia, and the latest in promoting yourself on the internet, Portfolio Design addresses every aspect of portfolio plannin gand production."

disappointed.......2006-11-04
Given this book was about presentation and promotion I was suprised to find the reproduction very poor, as if it was a photocopy in some parts. The paper selection was poor and some of the photographs of works approaching unreadable. The advice and text was good. Very, very diasappointed and in fact gave the book away.
PORTFOLIO DESIGN -indeed.......2006-09-20
Once again, I am writing a review for this book and specifically the third edition. I have noticed that a few people seem to be confused about what this book provides, so I'll give you my take on the publication.
This book is about designing a professional portfolio to showcase your work. This is not a "How To" for Photoshop, InDesign or for ways to resize renderings, although I would like to think that you would be able to easily utilize the technology at an educational facility, if you indeed have access.(If you can use AutoCad you can figure out PS and if you can use PS surely you can accurately resize an image...right?) This book focuses on layout, spacing, planning sequences, visual weight and just about any other visual design element that one might embrace when producing a portfolio. The outcome of using this book as a resource ends in your portfolio being stylized in a personal yet extremely effective design. The most beneficial aspect of this book is learning how to compose the whole thing as a piece of literature. Your portfolio should tell a story. A story with an introduction, an exposition, plot, peaks, plateaus and an appropriate finish. THIS IS ABOUT PLANNING, CHOOSING CONTENT AND DESIGNING A FINISHED PRODUCT THAT YOU CAN HAND TO PROSPECT AND KNOW THAT YOU HAVE CAPTURED THEIR ATTENTION. Of course, this book will not make poor work/pieces look fabulous. Sorry, no magic tricks are included.
Also note information on digital portfolios.
If you're an architecture student you have to buy this!!.......2005-03-10
This book will get you accepted in the best schools!!
I have read more than one book on portfolio design for architects, listened to many words of advice on the subject but Howard Linton's book was really the best resource I've ever had.
Other books are just vague and annoyingly general, they don't tell you how to organize yourself and your work and they don't discuss the many details you have to bear in mind and go through, or worse still have no lists of the dos and don'ts! On the other hand, Portfolio design by Mr. Linton does all that and much more.
I recommend it to all architecture students and professionals.

Durrance shines again!.......2003-03-27
Dick Durrance has come through with a spectacular follow up to his first book, "Golfers." In "The PGA Tour," Durrance combines his beautiful and evocative photos to give you a real inside view of life on the tour. From the incredible Tiger Woods image early in the book to the rows of early morning mowers preparing a fairway for the coming event, the book makes you feel like you are a part of the tour. A great gift for any golf player or fan of the tour. I highly recommend it.
