4 out of 5 stars a joy to read.......2005-11-11

as a lay person with strong interests in architecture, i found this book succeeds at informatively and practically presenting the landscape of today's architectural world.
first of all, it's not intended to be an in-depth analysis on any architect or style, but rather "a spotter's guide to the various breeds of architects", to quote the authors. there's only two pages (usually one full page of text and another page composed of three to four photos) dedicated to each architect, which is a format i happened to enjoy, for personally it served my goal of exploring the contemporary architectural scene at a relatively quick pace and without being blocked by abstract academic discourses.
secondly, according to the authors, the architects are chosen based on whether they are highly "influential", meaning, whether they "have changed the way in which their contemporaries and successors thing and practise". not being an architecture professional, i can not quite tell whether or not this book has done a fair job, but based on the introductory texts for each architect, i felt i was adequately introduced to their accomplishments and their influences.

"Bizarre omissions, weird inclusions-we can hear you muttering now. Any book that attempts to take a broad look at the peculiar world of comtemporary architects and architecture is asking for trouble." (p.7)

This is a direct quote from the introduction of the book written by the three authors. Ironically, I think they made a correct judgment about their book.

My simple critique is: Who are the target readers of this book?

If you are a casual architecture reader, a lay person, the content of this book will not catch your heart. The information about each architect and their works is too brief. Without knowing their works and their idiosyncratic aesthetics, the content in the book will not make much sense to you, not to mention the quality and fairness of the authors' opinions and critiques on those architects.

I truly believe that sincere and true appreciation of architect is much much more important than acquainted you with Who's Who. There are tons of good books with great presentations of architectural works. If you are particularly interested in certain architects, go and find a volume solely dedicated to them, analyzing how they've matured and built their own style.

On the other hand, if you are a professional and quite familiar with the architectural community, then what's the point of getting this book?

So I don't really know what's the purpose of publishing this book? What kind of message do the authors want to convey to the reader? If they had a unique and thoughtful criteria of selecting the architects presented in this book, then they did not fulfill this goal by organizing the architects alphabetically. If they planned to have an overview of the influential living architects (that's actually what they said in the introduction), then their list is far from being complete and representative. If they wanted to highlight some promising young and upcoming talents, they still did not do their research adequately.

The only value of this book, as far as I am concerned, is poping up some interesting architects in front of you (even if you are not familiar with their works). Then you can get more info from other resources.

I thought about rating this book at 2 stars. But considering their hard work of compling all these stuff, a 3-star rating is fair.

I use plenty of black and white forest plants and forest animal pictures for print. The included CD gave me what I needed. I have purchased several Dover clip art CDs and have always been satisfied. While some are definitely better than others, I can't say that I've ever been disappointed in the overall offering.

      Book Description

Larry Desmedt (1949-2004), genius motorcycle builder/artist, daredevil extraordinaire and introspective philosopher, will forever be known as Indian Larry. He remains the motorcycle world's most beloved figure, known equally for his wild antics, his gentleness and generosity, and the radical bikes that reflected his carnivalesque character. One of the originators of the hard-core-style custom chopper, he combined ingenious metalwork and inventive engineering in highly collectable chrome sculptures that have garnered worldwide respect and recognition. In Indian Larry renowned photographer Timothy White pays tribute to an intimate friend, a riding companion and his most compelling photographic subject ever.

      5 out of 5 stars Indian Larry.......2007-01-06

Breathe taking photos, with great detail and the highest quality I've ever seen. Timothy White did an excellent job, and I recomend it to any Indian Larry fan.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any bike fan.......2007-01-03

Timothy White has captured some great moments on this oversized beautifully printed book of Larry's personal life and his bikes, shot on location and in the studio, its one of my favorite bike books of all time.
I just wish there were some shots of Indian Larry's Indian choppper.

      5 out of 5 stars If a picture's worth a thousand words..........2006-06-16

...then you'll never get tired of 'reading' this book. I say 'reading' because it's not a book filled with stores and anecdotes of Indian Larry's life, it's more of a pictorial celebration of Indian Larry.

Don't buy this book if you want a biography.

It's an excellent 'coffee table' style book, something you'll pick up quite often just to flick through the pictures and look over them again. The pictures themselves are wonderful, and the large format of the book gives the whole package greater visual impact. If you're a fan of Larry then this book is a must have for your bookshelf.

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-04-17

A spectacular book that captures Larry and his friends in a wide variety of moods. Timothy White captures Larry perfectly, and now that Larry's gone, this document becomes all the more important.
A great book that should be looked at not just by chopper fanatics but by anyone who's interested in the inner workings of eccentrics.

      5 out of 5 stars indian larry.......2006-04-15

this book is awesome. and the pictures are out the world. if a indian larry fan this book is for you.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Collaborative Expressions.......2002-01-06

Caution: A few of the female images in this book exhibit "see-through" tops. If such things offend you, either avoid those pages, or this book.

In the foreword by Mr. Harrison Ford, Mr. Ford describes what he likes about Mr. White photography and why the two have been working together for 20 years. When Mr. Ford was first a contract player, the studio had his haircut like Elvis and then took a publicity shot to match. Even Mr. Ford didn't find the person portrayed to be appealing. Since then, Mr. Ford has sometimes been able to get approval over motion picture publicity stills. With this permission, Mr. Ford has called on Mr. White. "The work he does supports my ambitions . . . ."

That characterization is an important one for viewers and readers of this book. Many of the images are stunning portrayals of mood, personality, and identity. This is especially true where the person portrayed has a strong personality (Robert Mitchum), engaging eyes (Christie Brinkley), or fine acting ability (Sophia Loren). On the other hand, some of the images show the quirky, humble side. Those photographs work well with dead pan expressions (like Julia Roberts among discarded tires in an alley).

Among the subjects whose images strongly appealed to me were the ones mentioned above and those of John Sayles, Mel Gibson, Paul Newman, Eddie Griffin, Liza Minelli, Sylvester Stallone, Costas Mandylor, Queen Latifah, Drew Barrymore (Hollywood, March 1995), David Keith, Kiefer Sutherland, and the version of Nicolas Cage on the dust cover.

On the other hand, some of the backdrops and poses just didn't work for me. These images were like the flattering poses of wealthy people during the Renaissance, making everyone seem like they are larger-than-life. You can adjust the image in a painting to get that effect. In a photograph, the person's pose, expression, and intensity have to fit the backdrop. In a number of cases, the subject just didn't have enough of the right stuff to match. As a result, the people look slightly limp or out-of-place against the intense or heroic setting. This suggests that too much collaboration can possibly be harmful to ambitions as well, by causing weaknesses to become more obvious.

The book's paper quality, size of pages, and reproduction quality are all quite good. The photography is mostly in color, but the duotone effects are often the best. Most photographers are better in one or the other, and Mr. White's strength is duotone.

What do you want people to see when they look at or think of you? How does that expand your life? How does it constrict your alternatives?

Open yourself to others . . . in order to come closer to them.

        5 out of 5 stars High Art.......2001-11-16

Soulful locations, riviting compositions...Photography as a fine art meets the celebrity portrait. Timothy White is a master. The suprising candor that is captured in his subjects all share an honesty and intimacy that is so rare in the entertainment industry. This work inspires the amateur as well as the professional photographer.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrity Portrait Photography At Its Finest.......2001-10-28

The beauty and depth of this photography book transcends its celebrity subject matter. Timothy White has managed to capture a true moment with his subjects while at the same time making it about so much more than a photograph of a famous person. The richness and quality of this book has a place in my photography/art book collection as one of my favorites.

What is more dangerous than Groo in war? Answer: Groo in love. He fell and fell hard for the most dangerous warrior woman of them all, Chakaal, in a quartet of classic tales, now lovingly collected in this spiffy paperback. Critics agree that it's better than a lot of things that are not nearly as good. Dark Horse Comics and the Eisner-Award winning team of Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier continue to bring you these classic adventures of Groo, the world's stupidest barbarian. There's more mulch, more cheese dip, more secret messages, and almost as many laughs!

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Groo and Chakaal. Well, Groo wants it to be Groo and Chakaal. Chakaal is a woman that is pretty handy with the pigstickers herself, and, her brain actually works. There is no chance that she would ever be in love with Groo. Or, at least you would hope so. A besotted brainless cheese dipping barbarian is pretty funny though.

4 out of 5 stars Love and Mayhem.......2002-11-03

Groo the Barbarian's lady love Chakaal features in these episodes where despite her attempts to travel to the furthest place on earth to get away from him he's tracked her down. Chakaal is in fine form, defeating raiding female warriors from the sea. Groo is also in fine form, spoiling half her plans and coming up with a plan to save a village that works except the village doesn't need saving when he springs it - too late! Together they free a village of the terror of a resident giant spider and investigate a dragon hatchery scam. Chakaal manages almost with sentimental regret to get away from him in the end - or does she?

Note: the printing quality is generally okay to very good for the series, but this is generally a collection for Groo fans and comic book fans. The binding on some of my copies is broken (these are soft backs) and the print is now and then not the greatest. As a fan, I bought every collection I could, and enjoy them despite this! Not though for long-term pristine collectors though.

The only foreign photographer in the Soviet Union when Hitler's troops invaded in 1941, "Adolf Hitler's greatest enemy," the first journalist to enter the concentration camp at Dachau before American troops arrived to liberate it--these are descriptions of some of the courageous World War II correspondents who risked their lives to report on the outrage, devastation, and hope of war. What makes them especially notable is that they are all women. Penny Colman's remarkable book tells of some of the 127 women who defied the traditional gender barrier to become accredited war correspondents. Reporting on Iwo Jima, concentration camps, famous battles, and Nazi rallies, stellar writers and photographers such as Margaret Bourke-White and Clare Boothe Luce scooped many of their male colleagues, and gave the folks back home a real image of war. Breathtaking photographs, actual newspaper dispatches, and edge-of-seat descriptions of the near misses the correspondents experienced as they followed the war make this book the ultimate for girls in search of girl power inspiration. Penny Colman is the author of many award-winning titles, including Rosie the Riveter: Women Working on the Home Front in World War II and Girls: A History of Growing Up Female in America. (Ages 11 and older) --Emilie Coulter

            Book Description

During World War II, 127 women managed to obtain official accreditation from the U.S. War Department as war correspondents. In spite of U.S. military regulations that forbade women to cover combat, Martha Gellhorn, Margaret Bourke-White, Lee Miller, and many others found ways to get “where the action was.” Their tenacity, bravery, and fresh approach to reporting war news broke the gender barrier and opened the way for women journalists of today. This is the exciting story of what they did and how they did it—flying bombing missions, taking photographs inside Buchenwald, stowing away on D day hospital ships, dodging bullets on Iwo Jima, and much more. Penny Colman’s authoritative and exciting text also functions as an overview of the war and is profusely illustrated with up-front photos.

5 out of 5 stars Women Pioneers Go Down in "Herstory".......2002-06-03

..."There were many dead and many wounded but the survivors contained the fluid situation and slowly turned it into a retreat, and finally, as the communiqué said, the bulge was ironed out. This was not done fast or easily; and it was not done by those anonymous things, armies, divisions, regiments. It was done by men, one by one, your men." -Martha Gellhorn, writing on the Battle of the Bulge in 1944

Where the Action Was takes us on a journey through the past, looking at the pioneers of women journalists in action as they faced danger, death, and the images of war. Colman captures different moments throughout the war, from the very beginning, to Pearl Harbor, to the liberation of concentration camps, to the dropping of the atomic bombs.

The amazing tales of many talented women writers are accurately detailed, and they show us the adversities our female predecessors had to overcome for us women to be where we are today. Traveling as stowaways on boats, risking their lives to report the truth, disregarding orders given by military leaders, and being arrested all in a day's work for these stubborn and talented writers.

I'll bet you've never heard of Dickey Chappelle, Ann Stringer, Margaret Bourke-White, and Martha Gellhorn. Neither had I, until I read this book. Now I question the fact that none of this information is taught in class, or why these heroic, talented women must remain in anonymity. ...

5 out of 5 stars Especially recommended reading for ages 10 and older........2002-03-29

During the second world war, over a hundred women obtained official accreditation from the US War Department as war correspondents, finding ways to cover combat to break major war stories. Where The Action Was tells their stories and some of the incredible lengths they went to in order to provide inside coverage during the war. Over seventy black and white photos pepper this account of their lives, achievements and courage: ages 10 and up will find it intriguing.

5 out of 5 stars Classic adventure... and mostly true!.......2004-09-18

I confess: Richard F Burton is one of my heroes. In part, it's because much of my life has been spent in his traces, from India, through the Middle East, to Baltimore and the Great Plains.

He's simply a fabulous story-teller. Whether he's commenting on the sexual proclivities of the people of a region, their food, clothing, culture or religious practices, he's just fascinating.

This book really should not be sold separately from the second volume; they go together. That said, this is an excellent introduction to 19th C. Arabia. It's an Arabia that exists only in the minds of traditionalists--foreign or Arab--but it informs so much of how the Arabs see themselves that it's "must reading."

Burton was in his prime when he wrote this, before his misadventures in searching for the source of the Nile. His observations are acute; his writing clear. Make no mistake, Burton was a member of Victorian English society, even if he could laugh at the barriers of class when out of the country. His insights into Arabia, though, cast a very clear reflection of his upbringing, as well as the new sense of anthropological research he adds to the process.

4 out of 5 stars Sir Richard Burton - a man not of his time.......2002-12-18

Excellent writing about an arduous journey to meccah. While not the first European to enter the holy city, he was the first to pace off dimensions and publish an extensive survey of the area, the city and the muslims' sacred meterorite. Very interesting subject material particularly in the 21st century.

Its my opinion that though he wrote an amazing number of books none of them are really 5 star classics though there are some flawed masterpieces in there. He just wrote too fast to care about polishing his works.
As for racism, a charge that could be brought up against all Imperial Englishman, he is no doubt as guilty as his fellows. Not to excuse him for it but though writing within an anglo tradition and to a strictly anglo public he perhaps overstates his own anglo bias just to assure his readers he has not gone native, a charge which would be ruinous to any career, military or literary. I won't try to convince you one way or the other but any man who learns another mans language and his religion and his literature and pays so much mind to him that he can even drink a glass of water using his exact manner is paying that man and his culture some kind of compliment. I won't pretend to understand what exactly Burtons motives were from one moment to the next and one adventure to the next but his relation to all these cultures certainly cannot be reduced to a one word description. Burton is a man of immense learning , his enthusiasms are infectious and his appetites as well as his humor are outrageous. With Burton you always get more than you bargained for, you get the country he is in and all manner of localised detail but also you get Burton, his way of writing, his manners, and his customs.

              4 out of 5 stars A Riot.......2001-11-16

It's hard to take Richard Burton seriously nowadays. His sardonic humor and his hilarious deadpan observations about Middle Eastern life sound more like a satire on Victorian attitudes than an actual travel story. And yet, underneath the veneer one sometimes catches a glimpse of sympathy and actual respect for the people he writes about.

Under the veneer, too, there is a hard core layer of reality, and a surprising number of his observations are true even today. The thing that gets me is that he was able to pull off the pilgrimage at all! As a sometime traveler and student of languages, I have been in situations where I have tried to pass for a native, and regardless of where you go it is a difficult act to pull off for more than five minutes. How Burton got all the way to Mecca without being stoned to death is beyond me.

Which makes it a good adventure story as well as good travel literature. One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Great finish to an exciting journey.......2001-03-16

Here Burton finds Mecca and the long-sought Ka'abah. Along with descriptions of the Badawin of "Al-Hijaz," the "Bedouins" to us who "haunt" the normal caravan routes, Burton describes the people of Mecca and the religious observances and practices of the "Haji's" first appearance (and subsequent appearances) at the Bayt Ullah, the House of God.

While Burton keeps his condescension and moral superiority (if not sublimity) in check, he will occasionally weary the reader and try their patience with such observations as "the pigeons of Mecca resemble those of Venice" -- and who is to say that differences exist in those that seasonally appear in downtown Cleveland?

Altogether, along with the first volume, an enjoyable read and an intriguing catalog of relevant observations, historical detail, biblical anecdotes and legends, and at the end of the volume, excerpts from earlier European "Hajis" (a "Gentleman of Rome" in 1503 and a semi-educated English youngster in 1680).

A first-rate travelogue, peppered at times with overbearing detail.

Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton was a man of considerable talents. Liguist, swordsman, soldier, writer/poet/translator, explorer. The list is much too long to present here. This is as much an account of the Muslim world that Burton came to know and love as it is a telling of the Victorian age in which he lived. If you love history and great writing then this book is for you!
