Collaborative Expressions.......2002-01-06
In the foreword by Mr. Harrison Ford, Mr. Ford describes what he likes about Mr. White photography and why the two have been working together for 20 years. When Mr. Ford was first a contract player, the studio had his haircut like Elvis and then took a publicity shot to match. Even Mr. Ford didn't find the person portrayed to be appealing. Since then, Mr. Ford has sometimes been able to get approval over motion picture publicity stills. With this permission, Mr. Ford has called on Mr. White. "The work he does supports my ambitions . . . ."
That characterization is an important one for viewers and readers of this book. Many of the images are stunning portrayals of mood, personality, and identity. This is especially true where the person portrayed has a strong personality (Robert Mitchum), engaging eyes (Christie Brinkley), or fine acting ability (Sophia Loren). On the other hand, some of the images show the quirky, humble side. Those photographs work well with dead pan expressions (like Julia Roberts among discarded tires in an alley).
Among the subjects whose images strongly appealed to me were the ones mentioned above and those of John Sayles, Mel Gibson, Paul Newman, Eddie Griffin, Liza Minelli, Sylvester Stallone, Costas Mandylor, Queen Latifah, Drew Barrymore (Hollywood, March 1995), David Keith, Kiefer Sutherland, and the version of Nicolas Cage on the dust cover.
On the other hand, some of the backdrops and poses just didn't work for me. These images were like the flattering poses of wealthy people during the Renaissance, making everyone seem like they are larger-than-life. You can adjust the image in a painting to get that effect. In a photograph, the person's pose, expression, and intensity have to fit the backdrop. In a number of cases, the subject just didn't have enough of the right stuff to match. As a result, the people look slightly limp or out-of-place against the intense or heroic setting. This suggests that too much collaboration can possibly be harmful to ambitions as well, by causing weaknesses to become more obvious.
The book's paper quality, size of pages, and reproduction quality are all quite good. The photography is mostly in color, but the duotone effects are often the best. Most photographers are better in one or the other, and Mr. White's strength is duotone.
What do you want people to see when they look at or think of you? How does that expand your life? How does it constrict your alternatives?
Open yourself to others . . . in order to come closer to them.

What is more dangerous than Groo in war? Answer: Groo in love. He fell and fell hard for the most dangerous warrior woman of them all, Chakaal, in a quartet of classic tales, now lovingly collected in this spiffy paperback. Critics agree that it's better than a lot of things that are not nearly as good. Dark Horse Comics and the Eisner-Award winning team of Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier continue to bring you these classic adventures of Groo, the world's stupidest barbarian. There's more mulch, more cheese dip, more secret messages, and almost as many laughs!Customer Reviews:

Note: the printing quality is generally okay to very good for the series, but this is generally a collection for Groo fans and comic book fans. The binding on some of my copies is broken (these are soft backs) and the print is now and then not the greatest. As a fan, I bought every collection I could, and enjoy them despite this! Not though for long-term pristine collectors though.

The only foreign photographer in the Soviet Union when Hitler's troops invaded in 1941, "Adolf Hitler's greatest enemy," the first journalist to enter the concentration camp at Dachau before American troops arrived to liberate it--these are descriptions of some of the courageous World War II correspondents who risked their lives to report on the outrage, devastation, and hope of war. What makes them especially notable is that they are all women. Penny Colman's remarkable book tells of some of the 127 women who defied the traditional gender barrier to become accredited war correspondents. Reporting on Iwo Jima, concentration camps, famous battles, and Nazi rallies, stellar writers and photographers such as Margaret Bourke-White and Clare Boothe Luce scooped many of their male colleagues, and gave the folks back home a real image of war. Breathtaking photographs, actual newspaper dispatches, and edge-of-seat descriptions of the near misses the correspondents experienced as they followed the war make this book the ultimate for girls in search of girl power inspiration. Penny Colman is the author of many award-winning titles, including Rosie the Riveter: Women Working on the Home Front in World War II and Girls: A History of Growing Up Female in America. (Ages 11 and older) --Emilie CoulterBook Description
During World War II, 127 women managed to obtain official accreditation from the U.S. War Department as war correspondents. In spite of U.S. military regulations that forbade women to cover combat, Martha Gellhorn, Margaret Bourke-White, Lee Miller, and many others found ways to get “where the action was.” Their tenacity, bravery, and fresh approach to reporting war news broke the gender barrier and opened the way for women journalists of today. This is the exciting story of what they did and how they did it—flying bombing missions, taking photographs inside Buchenwald, stowing away on D day hospital ships, dodging bullets on Iwo Jima, and much more. Penny Colman’s authoritative and exciting text also functions as an overview of the war and is profusely illustrated with up-front photos.Customer Reviews:
Women Pioneers Go Down in "Herstory".......2002-06-03
Where the Action Was takes us on a journey through the past, looking at the pioneers of women journalists in action as they faced danger, death, and the images of war. Colman captures different moments throughout the war, from the very beginning, to Pearl Harbor, to the liberation of concentration camps, to the dropping of the atomic bombs.
The amazing tales of many talented women writers are accurately detailed, and they show us the adversities our female predecessors had to overcome for us women to be where we are today. Traveling as stowaways on boats, risking their lives to report the truth, disregarding orders given by military leaders, and being arrested all in a day's work for these stubborn and talented writers.
I'll bet you've never heard of Dickey Chappelle, Ann Stringer, Margaret Bourke-White, and Martha Gellhorn. Neither had I, until I read this book. Now I question the fact that none of this information is taught in class, or why these heroic, talented women must remain in anonymity. ...

Classic adventure... and mostly true!.......2004-09-18
Sir Richard Burton - a man not of his time.......2002-12-18
bibliography & note.......2002-03-09
Its my opinion that though he wrote an amazing number of books none of them are really 5 star classics though there are some flawed masterpieces in there. He just wrote too fast to care about polishing his works.
As for racism, a charge that could be brought up against all Imperial Englishman, he is no doubt as guilty as his fellows. Not to excuse him for it but though writing within an anglo tradition and to a strictly anglo public he perhaps overstates his own anglo bias just to assure his readers he has not gone native, a charge which would be ruinous to any career, military or literary. I won't try to convince you one way or the other but any man who learns another mans language and his religion and his literature and pays so much mind to him that he can even drink a glass of water using his exact manner is paying that man and his culture some kind of compliment. I won't pretend to understand what exactly Burtons motives were from one moment to the next and one adventure to the next but his relation to all these cultures certainly cannot be reduced to a one word description. Burton is a man of immense learning , his enthusiasms are infectious and his appetites as well as his humor are outrageous. With Burton you always get more than you bargained for, you get the country he is in and all manner of localised detail but also you get Burton, his way of writing, his manners, and his customs.
A Riot.......2001-11-16
Under the veneer, too, there is a hard core layer of reality, and a surprising number of his observations are true even today. The thing that gets me is that he was able to pull off the pilgrimage at all! As a sometime traveler and student of languages, I have been in situations where I have tried to pass for a native, and regardless of where you go it is a difficult act to pull off for more than five minutes. How Burton got all the way to Mecca without being stoned to death is beyond me.
Which makes it a good adventure story as well as good travel literature. One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I recommend it highly.
Great finish to an exciting journey.......2001-03-16
While Burton keeps his condescension and moral superiority (if not sublimity) in check, he will occasionally weary the reader and try their patience with such observations as "the pigeons of Mecca resemble those of Venice" -- and who is to say that differences exist in those that seasonally appear in downtown Cleveland?
Altogether, along with the first volume, an enjoyable read and an intriguing catalog of relevant observations, historical detail, biblical anecdotes and legends, and at the end of the volume, excerpts from earlier European "Hajis" (a "Gentleman of Rome" in 1503 and a semi-educated English youngster in 1680).
A first-rate travelogue, peppered at times with overbearing detail.
