Customer Reviews:
Excellent process driven guide to graphic presentation.......2007-10-03
An excellent process driven guide to architectural graphic presentation; supported by great examples from students as well as practicing professionals. I use this book constantly as a reference on all projects.
Architects Bible.......2007-10-01
This book is fantastic. I use it as my architectual Bible. It is not only good for educating Architects, drafters, and artists, but it is also a great book to use as a reference.
Exceptionally thorough reference w/ excellent examples & descriptions.......2007-09-14
Easy to understand, thorough examination of a range of methods used for architectural drawings. Clear, concise descriptions as well as clear graphics depicting methods and processes. Extremely detailed reading while avoiding the mash-up of other technical manuals.
Incredible Range of Insight; makes Architectural Drawing seem achievable at any level.......2007-09-14
I come from a background where architectural drawing seemed unobtainable. When I started graduate school, I was apprehensive about my ability as an architect because I had always thought that I could not draw. With the help of this book (earlier edition) and my professor, I walked through the door, into the center of the beast. It was as if a light had been turned on in a dark corridor, and I could finally see myself and my potential. I have repeatedly gone back to this as a source to help broaden my potential and ability to realize my ideas on paper. It continues to be useful for any level of reader trying to improve their ability to draw. A must have for any architect!
Most effective and fundimental for users of all levels.......1999-01-07
I found this book to be incredably helpful for its in depth look at presentation styles and presentation drawings. There is also a huge section on orthographic and perspective drawings, how to see them and construct them.
Book Description
"As Harrison ably shows, photos can inspire, capture what won't stay still, or serve as a personal reference file...[This is] a good first choice."--Library Journal
"A very helpful resource for both artist and art educator."--School Arts
A camera can instantly capture a fleeting moment in time--that shifting quality of light, a flash of emotion across a face--and preserve it for artists to paint at their leisure. Make your photographs an invaluable inspiration for great paintings with this inspirational guide. A technical discussion covers cameras, lenses, viewpoints, and depth of field. Themed mini-galleries place source photographs and the paintings they motivated side-by-side--including a photo of Paris by night that, in the artist's hands, becomes a glittering, romantic pastel of the city. Eight in-depth profiles of painters feature a selection of their art, conversations about their working methods, and a tutorial that follows the progression from photograph to painting.
Customer Reviews:
Now I SEE!.......2000-06-11
Whether photographing landscapes or close subjects, I could never remember what caught my eye or why I wanted to paint it. Harrison's book solved that problem.
She walks you through the various cameras and lenses to use, simple techniques of photography and then the best part; cropping, combining different photos, handling the lights and darks of your photos and composition. Then to the painting....she frees your mind to paint as YOU want to see it, choosing your own colors and giving it your own signature. In going through my photos once again, now I SEE why I took those photos! What was once dead, is now alive and begging to be painted.

Book Description
Sex clubs and hostess bars, love hotels and soap parlours, fetish parties and porno factories-photographer Romain Slocombe, a frequent visitor to Japan in recent years, has documented every aspect of this scene. Bondage models, porn actresses, prostitutes and party girls are featured in over 80 revealing photographs.
??
Tokyo Sex Underground is a sometimes poignant, always provocative collection of Slocombe's images, forming probably the most fascinating glimpse of Japanese erotic culture ever provided by an outsider.
??
Romain Slocombe's other photographic collections include City Of The Broken Dolls (Creation Books, 1997). He has also directed several films about Japan, and his graphic novel Prisoner Of The Red Army is now acknowledged as an S/M classic.

The Medium is the Message.......2003-02-09
Those who purchased TOKYO SEX UNDERGROUND by Romaine Slocumbe probably expected a titillating photo expose of the raunchy side of Tokyo at night. The majority of the reviewers listed above were clearly disappointed by what was admittedly a grainy set of pictures of women who seemed unwilling or unhappy about being included. The reviewer for Amazon.Com called this book 'stunning.' Stunning is not the right word although I saw a running theme that the other reviewers may have overlooked. What I did see was not porn although some of the women were porn actresses. The collective image that built over over the course of the pictures was one of sadness and distress. The smiling colorful face of the model on the front cover was obviously a marketing ploy, and I realized that even before I bought it. What interested me was a call for help that I could sense from nearly each woman. The harsh nightlife of Tokyo sex women can not be materially different from women employed in any other sex capital of the world. The stereotyped image of prostitutes as glamorous comes mostly from Hollywood sanitized versions of celluloid hookers like Julia Roberts. The women in this book truly were pretty women, but they were sadfaced women too. The scarcity of accompanying text accentuated rather than hid this subtext of women caught in forces beyond their ken. It is not likely that any reader seeking arousal will find such feelings here. What he might find instead is the more sobering realization that the sex industry is shiny only on the exterior, and even then the grim faces of the women pictured give the lie to that canard as well.
Give this guy his pencils back!.......2002-02-16
Like many of the reviewers for this type of book, I too am not interested in the subject of Japanese pornography because of any personal sexual proclivities - I am merely RESEARCHING the sexual ethos of the Japanese male. I might even write something about it some day.
Mr. Slocombe is, in all seriousness, a truly gifted illustrator but his photography is not compelling. Unlike many of his other projects, the concept for this work is nothing new so it's not worth getting just because of a fascinating main idea. Some of the B&W "snapshots" (it's all B&W) are interesting in that they document the environment these women work in but none are compelling or exciting. The photographer adds nothing of value to the scenes captured and often detracts. As another reviewer stated, the subjects more often than not look like they don't really want to be photographed and I doubt he was trying to capture that feeling (or to raise the issue of photographers affecting the subject or shame at being involved in the sex industry) because about a third of the photos don't have that type of atmosphere at all. Whatever his idea was, he should have drawn it.
underwhelming.......2002-02-02
I'm not sure whom these people are who are calling this sorry excuse for a book a masterpiece, but, let me tell you, it's far from. First of all, the photos are poor, grainy, amateurish, rather than stark and beautiful. The reader is given no frame of context. Instead of a book of pictures telling a story, you're given a lot of random images, which apparently aim to get by on shock value alone. Problem being, if it is your desire to see these types of images, you can probably find them somewhere on the Internet for free, with better photography and better sense of place--and in color. Therefore, Tokyo Sex Underground fails on that level. It offers nothing we haven't seen before. My hope from this book was to learn something about a world that I would probably never see, to get the sense that I'm a voyeur in a place I could never have access to. Instead I felt like a sucker who just wasted money on cheap, crappy pseudo porn. Honestly, I saw more Tokyo sex underground wandering the streets of Shinjuku. It was far more interesting and I didn't have to drop 16 bones to see it.
Comes as close to a vanity book as it could get.......2001-12-28
so I can tell you I was really surprised that the best picture in the book, and, the only picture in the book that is in colour is the cover ... for goodness sake ...
Look if you are going to flog a book as an art work in BW only, then the pictures better say something .... not in this book ... I think the photog used black and white to hide flaws ....
In this book the scenery is seedy, not because the author looked for it but because the areas where the girls practice their trade is seedy, the surprise here was that there is no surprise .... I think that no matter what the trade the girls aren't exactly too pleased in having their pictures taken since most of them have that 'deer in the headlights' kind of look and not the 'come hither' look one would have expected as requirement for the work ....
Instead of the eroticism of 'Tokyo Sex Underground' which I consider as vibrant and fun filled we just got some seedy sad dark BW stills of unwilling subjects ....
- SEX - UNDERGROUND - TOKYO - FANTASTIC -.......2001-11-07
Not as inspiring as the the 'City of the Broken Dolls,' but still as deeply motivating. That is to say it encompases the question: What is art? To present a portfolio of life 'unseen' in a documented way as many of the photos appear - leads one to question their reaction to the piece: Are you stimulated? Are you reacting in shock or disgust? Is your reaction an endorsment? Eitherway, Romain Slocombe has presented a beautiful portfolio - that raises many questions - the answers lie with the reader. The photography is stunning and if you like this then I would suggest descovering the work of Japanese photographer Araki (recently exhibited at the Hayward Gallery - London).

A thinking person's robot series, Mobile Police Patlabor avoids the overblown military plots of other mecha comics and focuses instead on robots' occupational uses. Its cast of memorable, likable characters and its plausible technology have made it one of the most popular manga around.
Customer Reviews:
Quite Good.......2004-05-09
Sadly, I fear the sales of this series of manga suffered from the movies. I believe people go into these books expecting to see what was shown in the three Patlabor movies... and find something completely different.
Patlabor, in each incarnation (Manga, OAVs, and TV series), has been a comedy. The movies were not. And so, a lot of the audience who had been hyped up by the earlier US release of the movies were... disappointed... by finding that the predecessor to those movies were comedies. Which is a shame, because these are such good works -- funny, smart, and well developed. Episodic in parts, yes, but with enough of a main storyline not to fall into a 'villain of the week' type format.
The TV series was a great series. The OAVs were a great series. The MANGA is a great series. None of them have sold as they should have, however, and I fear that is why this manga series release in the US was prematurely discontinued. I sincerely hope that one day, the remaining volumes are published... because it's a shame that this is all that we have.
It's really good........2000-10-02
I read Patlabor a few days ago, and i find myself flipping through the pages again and again. My parents read it after they found out i traded it for my allowance, probably to see if it was appropriate or not. My dad particularly liked it because he's the techie-battle type. they let me keep it, and my dad said that he'd buy me the second volume on one condition- if i put a review on amazon.
Amusing, but forgettable........2000-04-26
"Mobile Police Patlabor" began as a parody of the famous Gundam series, and it's very hit-or-miss. While some of the series will evoke chuckles, some of it is downright dull.
Yuki's art is entertaining, as is the storyline, but the story can often take far too long to get to where it's going. Often, one can turn past seven or eight pages and really feel like they didn't lose anything. Some people will argue this can be done with most manga, but I disagree.
If I seem like I'm being down on Patlabor, I don't mean to be, because I did enjoy reading it, but it isn't the kind of thing I will hold up and say is spectacular. It's the perfect thing for a lazy afternoon, as you can read it fairly quickly and once you're done with it, you aren't really yearning for the next book, although you might read it if you had it handy.
It's fun while it lasts, but easily forgettable.
honestly, the best anime there is.......1999-07-11
I've seen most of the mecha anime I can find around my area, including Akira and by far, this story is in my opinion, the best of the best. It focuses not on the mechs themselves, but rather the pilots and the idea, adding satire, humor and oh yes, mecha fight scenes too. With a solid story as it's backbone, Patlabor never ceases to amaze me with it's clever development. Truely the best anime there is
One of the most famous of Masami Yuuki's works........1999-04-03
A lighthearted look at the everyday adventures of a special vehicle police unit in Japan. Yuuki Masami delivers odd and subtle comedy with slightly eccentric characters in an every so slightly futurized word. You should also check out "Grooming Up!" another of his works about a young man and his trasposition from city and school life to working on a horse farm. Grooming Up has the same wit and even more superb character development.

Book Description
When Ernest Hemingway committed suicide in 1961 he left four unfinished works--A Moveable Feast, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, and an untitled work on his travels in Africa. The edited versions that have come down to readers and scholars of Hemingway appear as distinct, disjointed texts that fit oddly into his oeuvre. Through extensive literary detective work Burwell has uncovered substantial evidence that Hemingway in fact designed the three published works as a trilogy, what she terms "his own Portrait of the Artist."
Customer Reviews:
Groundbreaking Study.......2005-09-28
This is the only in-depth scholarly work extant on the mass of unfinished books Hemingway left behind in 1961. Besides that, it is fluidly written, thoroughly documented, thoughtfully analyzed, and excellent in all respects.
It matters not whether or not the thesis -- that the posthumous works constitute a loose unified work -- holds up. To state it and explore it, as the author does, is to cast a lot of light on the very complex issue of Hemingway's last works and their difficult manuscripts. No one had even gone as far as to lay the groundwork for such a question before Burwell. Indeed it was doubtless necessary to proceed on some sort of hypothesis to go through these widely divergent manuscripts chronologically, as the author does, and to then present a coherent text of her own regarding her studies.
The author also has a great openness and sympathy for Hemingway and his tortured, insistent aestheticism. It shines through the entire work and raises it to a very rare level in modern literary criticism.

Book Description
When, as a young man in the 1880s, Benjamin Lundy signed up for unimaginably hard duty aboard a square-rigged commercial sailing vessel -- one destined for a treacherous, white-knuckle passage round that notorious "graveyard of ships," Cape Horn -- he had no idea that his experience would also provide a window into an epochal transition that would fundamentally change man's relation to the sea.
The Way of a Ship is a mesmerizing account of Benjamin's life on board the square-rigger Beara Head. It evokes both the romance and brutality of that bygone era and illuminates the history of square-rigger seamen and the last days of the "beautiful, widow-making, deep-sea" sailing ships. Derek Lundy's masterful account of his forebear's journey reminds readers what Melville and Conrad expressed so well: that the sea voyage is an overarching metaphor for life itself.
Read by Richard Easton.

A Good Combination of Fiction and History.......2006-06-19
I find it curious that some readers found this book wanting. I would admit it had its slow times, but over all I was very impressed.
Besides a reasonable story line of the fictional voyage, the author had lots of the sea history of steam vs. sail, rounding the "Horn", navigating, scurvy, etc. I liked it all and appreciated the author's connection with long-lost relatives.
My recommendation: if you like "fictional history" from that era this is a good choice.
Fake stuff - why not read the real .......2006-02-07
This is made-up fake stuff by a wanna-be. Why not read the real - try Marryat's "Mr Midshipman Easy", etc. Marryat joined the Royal Navy in 1806 (yes 18) and fought against the French in the Med. He wrote this book in 1836 (yes 18) - it and other sources were used by Forrester to create the Hornblower character. Read this book and compare situations to the early Hornblower actions - like identical.
368 Pages.......2005-07-27
But only about 240 if you remove all of the quotes from Conrad, Dana, Mehlville, etc.
Truly a letdown.
Them was the days.......2005-06-11
"Them was the days, sonnies,
"Them was the men,
"Them was the ships,
"As we'll never see again."
(From the book)
This book is the author's imagined account of his grand-uncle's voyage as a crewman on the "Beara Head," a four-masted barque sailing around Cape Horn from Liverpool to Varparaiso, South America, in the 1880's. The author creates an engaging narrative of characters and things that may or may not have happened on the voyage, based on log information and what is known about the trip. Interspersed are chapters with general background material on the ships, history, and difficulties of the time.
I found this a very engaging read, and when I had finished it I was wishing for more. The life of a seaman in those days was truly harsh, a life of constant misery and hardship. The men live on short rations, long hours, little or no sleep, constant cold and damp, battling storm after storm, climbing up in the masts 160 feet above the rolling deck to deal with canvas sails weighing hundreds of pounds. Some men get their fingernails pulled out, some fall to their deaths in the sea, never to be seen again, and some live on to see the next port and another voyage.
If you are interested in sailing ships and stories of the sea, you will like this book.
the way of a ship.......2004-03-09
i didnt even get through the prologue when i found a poorly researched item, very jarring.then later on i find another .it kind of makes you wonder how well mr lundy does his research.
