Architectural Revolution by Information Revolution.......2006-11-21
We all know that information revolution has totally transformed the society. Architecture is no exception. Relative to industrial revolution's impact on architecture, "what has this recent revolution done to the field?" is the basic inquiry to the book. This book diligently answers to the question. It is extremely informative and provocative regarding digital technologies available for architecture.
As an outcome of a symposium held at U.Penn. in 2002, the book compiles various scholars and practitioners around the world. They grapple with the current technologies available to design and manufacture innovative shapes/forms/spaces that associate with digital aesthetics.
Spearheaded researchers such as Bill Mitchell(MIT), Chris Luebkeman(Arup), Ali Rahim (U.Penn), and Branko Kolarevic (U.Penn, chief editor of the book); and, cutting-edge practitioners such as Jim Glymph (Gehry), Hugh Whitehead (Foster & Partners), Bernhard Franken (Franken Architekten), etc.; both groups provide theoretical framework and actual applications.
It's interesting to point out that the authors deliberately associated digital architecture with smooth forms. Double curvatures deform structure/ skin/ space of the building. The new modes of design and production enables that complex geometries to be part of building industry.
As a reader, the most challenging claim of the book is that the authors
assert (some explicitly and some implicitly) on the new role of an architect. They believe that this new mode of production will revolutionize the client-architect-contractor relationship. Because architects will be the (single) dominant source of information on the three dimensionally morphed shape, manufacturers and fabricators would rely heavy on architects. The authors predict architect would regain absolute power of medieval master builders.

I'm getting my masters in Architecture and this book is a must-have, must-read for anyone designing in the digital age. It's informational and inspiring not only for architects, but anyone interested in using computer technology as a method for design carried through to manufactuing.

This book provides a great overview of the developing technolgies in digital design and fabrication. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a comprehensive study in the current trends in digital architecture. A series of 20+ articles by designers working in this area of architecture, this book updates the conversation to what is happening today and what is being projected in the future. Great resource!

Best Kaleidoscope book presently in Print!.......2002-07-01
Leaving politics aside, this book is a lushly illustrated book on contemporary Kaleidoscopes and Kaleidoscope Artists. The illustrations are rich and aewsome, and are of both the outside and inside images of many kaleidoscopes. I'm not aware of a better book in print for kaleidoscope enthusiasts and all interested in the art of Kaleidoscope making.
To be complete, combine this book in your library with other of Ms. Baker's books--especially Kaleidoscope Renaissance. Kaleidoscope Artistry primarily concentrates on more recent works by many scope makers, and blends well with the older scope info from her previous book.
Now, to address some complaints by other reviewers: This book is not, and does not try to be, an all inclusive encyclopedia of all active scope makers. Nor is it a philanthropic work of charity. Of course Ms Baker plans on making money from this book--just like John Grisham and Danielle Steele. Ms. Baker heads the Brewster Society, her private business. Like it or not, this society is the closest thing scopemakers have to a guild for their art. You may not agree with the society, but as of yet, there is not another organization which represents artists and enthusiasts alike. If Ms. Baker's distractors dislike the society so much, perhaps they should form their own group and write their own book.
It is unfortunate that such issues creep into these reviews. This is indeed a wonderful book that will grace anybody's library!

loveliest book on kaleidoscopes!.......2002-04-16
I adore this book. I know others have disagreements with the author and her selections, but even the cover makes an apology to an artist that was falsely harmed. The tree kaleidoscope is a definite "I am sorry" if I ever saw one. The book is great and so are the pictures and stories. I had wished to see a few more of my favorites in here, but do not blame the author who put in a lot of work! I am very glad to see the direction the book has taken as well as the author to make the kaleidoscope world one of true love, understanding, friendship and caring. I do hope this path continues with the disenchanted artists returning to the "family" they were once a major part of. Thank you for this book and it pictures and the stories, but most of all thank you for showing that you hold no grudges toward anyone and that you are truly the "first lady of kaleidoscopes!" I hope that one artist sees your apology and welcomes the hand of friendship you so kindly extended!
Nicely done.......2002-04-13
I want to say this is a great book. I am very glad to see it out now. Have been waiting a long time. I am also very glad that the author made up with an artist, Brett Bensley, by including one of his scopes on the cover no less! I didn't see any mention of his name in the book, but still it is nice to see his work and that the author has made some reparations. I have admired all these artists and hope you will include more of my other favorites in future books. Great job and bless your heart Mrs. Baker for making peace with ousted artists. I see he made peace with you buy removing his negative site as well. Thank you for this great peace offering!
Disappointed........2002-04-13
I had hoped to learn more about kaleidoscopes. It has great pictures. I just started collecting kaleidoscopes about three years ago. Even a novice, who loves to do research, finds this book lacking. I see that many don't believe it is missing some great artists and scopes, so I recommend great starting points: 1. the author's previous books, 2. [another website]. I do recommend that you look at Boswell's book and if you can get it, Gary Newlin's books. They don't seem to be "putting in plugs" for specific groups and artists, but just want to share information. This book does have some very good pictures and some good comments, but you know who the author loves and not who really should be included.

lots of useful information for those getting into microscopy.......2004-07-28
I spent a couple hours looking through this book while sitting in a bookstore, to determine if I should buy the book. I decided not to buy it because I had already learned most everything in it over the past several years of my own searches for information dealing with microscopy and photomicrography. So, if you are just getting into photomicrography, or need a good single reference book on the subject I would recommend it. I wouldn't say that I found anything really new in this book (except for an interesting epi-Rheinberg illumination image), but I was amazed at how much information was packed into it.
The book does cover a lot on film photography, in case you have any questions on that subject. The book is extemely easy to read and understand. A good deal of the equipement shown or mentioned is older, and can be found on the used markets at affordable prices (compared to new equipment). I didn't find a lot of pretty pictures (the ones in the book are very informative) in this book, but it's not intended to sit on your coffee table. I imagine its main use would be as a reference at your microscope bench (doesn't everyone have one of these?)

Exquisite photography using the scanning electron microscope.......1998-09-30
David Scharf is not only a master of the scanning electron microscope, a discipline that requires at least as much skill in sample preparation as it does in manipulating the instrument, but also an excellent photographer. His images are composed and executed as cleanly as any of the greats of photography.
Scharf goes beyond the commonly seen "monster bug from outer space" pictures to bring us images that are true photographs. His "Crane Fly" is more reminiscent of a ballet dancer than an insect. "Aphids Grazing on a Lemon Tree Leaf" has the peaceful, pastoral quality that the title suggests.
The pictures of plant life are my favorites. Some are beautiful patterns found in flower parts ("Candytuft Flower Petal" and "Untitled" Helxine, Baby's tears). "Hibiscus Pistils" reminds me of exploding fireworks. And "Fertilization," a picture of a bean flower, looks like something you'd see from Edward Weston.
Throughout the book you get little glimpses of his sense of humor as well.
This is a book for people who enjoy photography more than it is for scientists, though if you have ever worked with electron microscopy, your appreciation for the quality of the photos is that much greater. When I give presentations on the subject of "Excellence" this book is one of my examples.

Mangaka Kia Asamiya, the creative mind behind Silent Mobius and Nadesico, seems to have hit his mark again in the latest volume of his Dark Angel series, continuing the adventures of angelic warrior Dark (yes, that's really his name) and his cute fairy companion Kyo.
Sidetracked from his quest by the abduction of Kyo and the theft of his sword, Dark must get both back. But he can't do it without getting past a group of mechanical thieves known as the Gairana. And Dark can't complete that task without the help of a rag-tag team of fighters with old scores to settle. As the battle ensues, Dark's hidden power awakens and it will change the warrior for better or for worse.
For the manga newbie, the left-to-right format of this version of the manga is a breath of fresh air. For the manga buff, this book has enough riveting plotlines and manga archetypes to keep you happy; enigmatic heroes, ridiculously powerful foes, cataclysmic battles, and sexy heroines who can't seem to keep their clothes on. While it's fairly easy to pick up and read, the manga suffers from one major drawback-there are sound effects on nearly every single panel of every page, which not only prove annoying but distracting. And those with an untrained eye may miss a few details in all of the action. As an added treat, the manga also features a seven-page cover gallery where Asamiya's stunning artwork shines.
All in all, Asamiya fans know what they're getting here, and they won't be disappointed. Those who are into manga in general should give Dark Angel a try (Starting with Vol. 1, of course).
