Book Description
Comprehensive profiles of the world's 100 most extraordinary bridges.
Few humanmade structures combine the technical with the aesthetic in such an evocative way as bridges. From ancient times to the present, bridges have had a unique attraction on the imagination, eliciting awe, wonder and passion.
Bridges celebrates the stunning technical and artistic achievements in the creation, design, engineering, construction and social history of 100 remarkable bridges. The book reveals the secrets and science of the timeless masonry of imperial Rome, the elegant wooden edifices of ancient Japan and the soaring steel structures of today.
Organized chronologically to follow the stages in the development of bridge engineering and construction, each chapter has an introduction followed by fascinating details.
The vital stats for each bridge include:
- Location
- Date of construction
- Designer
- Construction materials and dimensions.
An account of the creation of each bridge includes the difficulties, hardships and disasters endured as well as the solutions and innovations conceived. Superb color photographs and specially commissioned artwork celebrate these soaring feats of engineering.
The final chapter explores how future bridges will look through examining the latest groundbreaking designs and projects.
Bridges is a magnificently illustrated non-technical reference to fascinating engineering discoveries and innovations.

missing something.......2007-02-22
This covers every possible aspect of bridge building that a layperson could think of. Except for one thing. It hardly mentions the laborers who are responsible for the work that made these bridges possible. Yes, a bridge is made from concrete, brick, steel, timber, cable, iron, and whatnot, but what about the blood, sweat, and tears? The book goes into the construction of piers, the methods used to erect various parts of the bridge, and so forth. But it stops short of mentioning how the laborers were organized, who they were, where they came from, and how many of them died building these works of art.
So, although the book filled me with knowledge, I finished it feeling a little bit empty, as if I had seen the surface of all the seas and oceans of the world, but never a whale or fish.
Customer Reviews:
nice photo gallery.......1997-07-16
A nice photo gallery for anyone who ever saw a bridge (and not just the Golden Gate) as something more than a road on stilts. There must be around 150 or so bridges shown here. Many of the views are stunning, and one can curl up with the book for many hours.
There could be more in the way of technical explanation. One wonders why they chose, for a given site, a suspension or cantilever structure, or one of these new weird-shaped things. The book may be a bit too democratic in allotting just so much space to each bridge--the Golden Gate gets the same two pages as some homely box girders. For some bridges, additional photos of construction history might have been nice.
Regardless, it's an absorbing bunch of pictures, and you won't look at bridges, even those faded cantilevers down the road, the same way.
Book Description
Attractive, practical treasury of 91 patterns adapted from The Book of Kells and other authentic sources depicts fabulous mythical creatures, human figures, birds, fish, and abstract designs —all incorporating the symmetrical weaves and interlacings characteristic of Celtic art. Perfect for use in window panels, mobiles, lampshades, and other stained glass projects.
Customer Reviews:
Useful patterns.......2004-04-30
I have used several patterns from this book with great results. I did make small modifications, but I do that with most patterns! Many of these patterns are quite complex and some involve many, many pieces, but there are also a few that are great for beginners as well. If you are interested in celtic designs, this is the best glass pattern source I have found.
Good Ideas.......2000-08-13
This book has some great ideas, but I found the patterns themselves crudely drawn. The images look like old hand drawn sketches that were enlarged to fit the page. You could tell where additional lines were added to allow for reasonable glass cutting, and areas of the patterns that should have been symmetrical were not.
I think a title of "Celtic Stained Glass IDEA Book" would be a more appropriate. I am not completely negative about this book. It has some interesting ideas, but just keep in mind that the pattern will have to be redrafted before getting a workable "pattern".

An Introductory Guide.......2003-08-31
Enfield's book has a very impressive sounding title but compared to The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes (Christopher James), or Coming Into Focus (John Barnier), it falls far short of being "A Complete Guide." This book is a nice introduction to some of the techniques a beginning student, interested in the subject, might investigate.
Buy this book.......2003-03-11
Photo-Imaging is beautifully written and illustrated--an essential volume for anyone interested in alternative photographic processes. The writing is clear and simple. Jill Enfield makes it easy to experiment with new photographic techniques. There are lots of helpful tips and hints based on Enfield's extensive experience with alternative processes. I particulary like the detailed supplier information she lists.
While I sometimes wished she had included additional historical and chemical details, it's a minor quibble because this book has carefully distilled the essential information needed to get up and running with each process. This book is a great value considering the low cost and the extensive information included. No fluff or filler--just concise information.
Winner of 2002 Golden Light Book Awards Best Technical Book.......2002-12-19
Photo-Imaging by Jill Enfield has received the 2002 Golden Light Book Awards Best Technical Book Award. The award is sponsored by The Maine Photographic Workshops, The International Film Workshops
and Rockport College. A panel of distinguished jurors reviews books and selects those that make a significant contribution to the art and literature of the medium. Submissions are judged on qualities such as writing, editing, photo reproduction, design and printing, and the contents' overall importance to their perspective mediums. The Jury, which reviews all entries, is comprised of several renowned photographers, filmmakers, publishers, writers and editors.
It's about time..........2002-11-21
I've seen Jill Enfield's work frequently in magazines and books, and was thrilled when I found out she was writing her own text. I teach experimental photography at a university, so any book of this nature that comes on the market, I buy. When this came in the mail from Amazon.com (promptly, I might add) I was impressed. Watson Guptill knows how to lay out a textbook so that it appeals to the reader, and is well supported by images, not only with examples of the processes but with "how to" pictures, also. It is user friendly, especially for those who are somewhat newer to the photographic medium and experimental in nature. That said, I learned new things (e.g. the chapter on tintypes) that I will use in my experimental photography class!
These topics are included: black and white infrared, liquid emulsion, enlarging negatives for alternative processes, ink jet transfers, polaroid processes, cyanotypes, kallitypes, platinum printing, palladium printing, tintypes, hand coloring, and other stuff. It is a good combination of what are traditionally termed "alt process" (platinum, cyanotypes, etc.) and what are more experimental things to try.
For this type of book the price at Amazon.com is excellent--most books of this caliber range from [$$$].

Good Intro for those new to the field.......2005-03-19
This title of this book is a little misleading. It isn't really a guide to "Creative" digital photography, and it doesn't really describe techniques for "Mastering" a digital SLR camera. Nevertheless, it is a comprehensive overview of digital photography and the various processes that distinguish it from film photography. A more accurate title might be "Amphoto's Introductory Guide to Digital Photography." In other words, the book is a good primer for those new to the field or those considering the possibility of switching from film to digital. It is not a book about creative techniques; it does not go into depth on any specific technique; and the information it discusses is not limited to SLR cameras. The book touches on many of the features that one might wish to consider when choosing a digital camera, although not in any organized way. It also touches on many of the techniques that can be used to manipulate digital images using photo editing software, but again, not in great detail. In short, the book is a good introduction to the subject, but not something you are going to keep on your bookshelf for future reference.
Big let down.......2005-01-17
I'm not surprised that no-one else has reviewed this book, as it was a great disappointment to me, even though I'm part of the intended audience - a professional photographer changing from film to digital. Unfortunately I found little new information here, and what I did find was not clearly enough explained for me to be able to apply. Perhaps the greatest disappointment, though, are the images. I never fail to be inspired by images in other Amphoto publications, but those in this book are too ordinary to warrant publication or emulation. Guess I'll go back to learning the hard way - by trial and error.

Not really a photography book more like digital imaging........2005-12-21
I've already passed the middle of the book and it's basically another Photoshop book. I knew that photo editing would be a part of the book but not the whole thing. In addition, they are not very good Photoshop tips you are better off just getting a Scott Kelby book for editing or Shoot like a Pro by Julie Adair King to learn digital photography basics.

Misleading title, but some good content.......2000-08-15
I agree with "Disappointed" below, in that the title of this book is misleading. There are only a few pages devoted to digital cameras, with the real focus being the bare-essentials of cameras in general: primarily, the differences between 35mm, APS, and digital.
I must say though that there are some great pictures in the book, all full-color, and some of the techniques suggested are worth a look. I'd recommend this book for someone who was an absolute newbie (like I was a year ago!), and then recommend they pass it on to someone else when they're done.
Disapointed.......2000-04-03
I bought this book for two reasons. First, because I thought it would help me make some choices about my upcoming digital camera purchase. Second, because it was cheap. This book, as it turned out, would be perfect for someone who who has never used a camera at all. I assumed it would be geared more towards what functions to look for in a digital camera, and how to use it once I brought it home. It did neither. This book has a great chapter on how to take pictures. Unfortunately, that was not what I was looking for. I returned this book after I thumbed through it and found nothing useful.

An irreverent look at life from a literary raconteur.......2000-07-10
Judging from these often humorous, sometimes poignant, but always brash and candid letters, it is probably safe to assume that few writers have had such widely varied experiences as has Larry L. King. Spanning over 40 years, King's fascinating and provocative letters--along with his no-holds-barred reminiscences interspersed among them--provide a virtual autobiography of this novelist, playwright, essayist, and commentator. What makes this epistolary volume especially interesting is that King suffers no fools lightly, appears to be intimidated by no one, and is always ready to prick the balloons of the famous--and oftentimes pompous. (His accounts of working with actor Burt Reynolds and dancer Tommy Tune are particularly hilarious.
Not for parents of small children.......1999-12-03
Parents of small children desperately need sleep, so I cannot recommend that they read this book--it has kept me awake for two nights in a row. It's as hard to put down as any thriller, and a whole lot funnier than most.
An hilarious and candid look at the writing life.......1999-11-08
King's book of letters take you inside the heart and head of one of America's most perceptive and humorous writers. Roy Blount once said that King writes like an angel would if it grew up in West Texas and drank. It's hard to improve on Blount's assessment. King's rollicking missives, directed to friends, family, politicians, critics, and fellow writers offer a fascinating portrait of the writing life. There's also the vicarious thrill of reading someone else's mail. Stories range from fellow author William Styron's run-in with "Mexican boo-smoke" to King's feud with the "alleged actor Burt Reynolds." The fact that a book this interesting has been published by a university press instead of a major trade house is as indicative as anything of the sorry state of affairs in the publishing industry these days. King's book, like himself, defies the mold.
A fascinating view of a writer's life.......1999-10-09
This book takes the reader inside the head and heart of a working writer and reveals the triumphs and the despair that are staples of a writer's life. There are a lot of famous people in it, too.
A terrific read.......1999-10-02
Larry L. King is an American hero. His work should be required reading for anyone who even thinks about the writing life. He ought to win the Nobel Prize, but then, he's a Texan so probably doesn't qualify.

Easy to read, Some very funny and interesting stories.......2003-03-20
This was a very delightful read. Some funny stories about every day life, living in an R.V. as a snowbird, and some of the funny things that can happen along the way..
A rib-tickling expose'.......2002-11-13
Much has been written about the humor and challenge of the R.V. life style, but this author has a fresh, easy reading approach to weird and funny situations; mostly true. which he and wife Del encountered in their ten year odyssey through the Western U.S. It is a tale of two very special pets who are daily woven into the joys of R.V. life in Yuma, AZ; offset by the horror of witnessing a murder near Yakima, WA (and testifying at the trial). But, the funniest half of the book deals with the comedy of house-sitting for total strangers; some situations that were so wierd and far-out that names and locations were changed to protect the author! I enjoyed this book because I am a 'senior' and it is printed in large print with lots of interesting pencil sketches by the author, and was short enough to finish in one night.
