The first desk reference on technical building systems for interior designers
Building Systems for Interior Designers is the first book to explain technical building systems and engineering issues in a clear and accessible way to interior designers. The technical knowledge and vocabulary presented here allow interior designers to communicate more effectively with architects, engineers, and contractors while collaborating on projects, leading to more accurate solutions for problems related to a broad range of other building considerations with an impact on interior design. Information on sustainable design is integrated throughout the book, making it a relevant tool for current and emerging trends in building design.
Written in a straightforward, nontechnical style that maintains depth and accuracy, this book is the first complete text applicable to interior design courses and provides thorough preparation for the NCIDQ exam. Engaging, clear illustrations support the text, which is accessible to those without a math or physics background.
Topics covered include:
- Heating and air conditioning systems
- Environmental issues
- Water and waste
- Thermal comfort
- HVAC systems
- Electricity
- Lighting
- Security and communications systems
- Fire safety
- Transportation systems
With numerous case examples illustrating how interior designers apply this material in the real world, Building Systems for Interior Designers is a valuable book for students, as well as a practical desktop reference for professionals.

Not a lot of creativity.......2003-03-28
I have the restaurants and hotels book, a portfolio of 40 designers( which is recommend), and thought that this one would be good too. There are a few good photos in it but most are a little outdated and old. not a whole lot of creativity being shown.

AWESOME!!!!!.......2007-01-10
For anyone that is interested in comics and how to draw them, this book touches on everything that has to do with comics. I recomend this book to anyone that is interested in drawing comics. I suggest that someone that buys this book have a little background in drawing skills.
This is the best book for drawing comics--PERIOD!.......2006-12-02
If you want to learn how to draw comics, there is no better book out there than this one. I got Draw Comics the Marvel Way, and You Can Draw Marvel Characters, but this one is head and shoulders above those other two as far as giving step by step instructions for someone who wants to learn how to draw in the first place, never mind how to draw comics. It is true that his style is old school, but if you're a beginner, just start drawing and worry about styles and schools after you've gotten some ability. Trust me, you'll love it!
This is a great book.......2006-09-21
I love comic books and superheroes. Blessed with a little artistic talent, some story/hero ideas, and no clue where to start I ordered this book a few weeks ago. I love it. Dick Giordano will admit himself that it is not a complete work on every topic covered. But if you have been drawing for years, and are somewhat experienced with recreating images that you have in front of you with a pencil, then this book is wonderful. I am very pleased with my progress and would recommend this book to anyone who considers themself at an intermediate drawing level who is looking to advance their abilities.
Few books I give 5 stars to.......2006-06-14
I loved this book! Infact, I've read it once and am reading it again! The cover art is cheesy, I'll admit, but the interior art is great! Y'know how Christopher Hart's books start off with somewhat okay drawing that just gets worse and worse? Dick's book does just the opposite. He's a living legend in the comics field and his book deserves a high review. This book is worth the cover price!
Disappointed Golden Age fan.......2005-12-07
Giordano is a pro from way back in the day... he hasn't been able to adjust to the changing styles and this art book is a sad display of that fact. I recommend getting a straight art instruction book from Bridgman, Hogarth, or Loomis. This book shows his deplorable lack of anatomy knowledge (seemed to be mainstay back in the 50's a la Ditko & Kirby anatomy), his simplistic 3D construction, and overdrawn oval shaped good girls, etc. He also graduated from the Wally Wood school of art where if you didn't know how to render anatomy you blacked it out. Still, he was one of the prime lenders to the modern comic language, so I suppose this is some publisher's way of patting him on the head and saying thanks for the memories.
Don't expect to come away with any newer material already covered in "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" by Stan Lee and Buscema (very simplistic book but the comic dynamics are much better) or any new sensitivity to modern storytelling. This book CAN NOT prepare you for any MODERN styles. Ranks slightly better than a Christopher Hart book (need I say more...?).

Without Arrowette, it's a little disappointing.......2001-05-31
Although this book was enjoyable, the abscence of my favorite character Arrowette (the girl archer) kept it from being an excellent graphic novel. It would have been great to have seen her as an adult. Her and Robin bring a little reality to these comics because they could exist in real life although such a pretty girl would probably want to be a supermodel instead. She is in the A League Of Their Own graphic novel which was a little better but just like this one they have to use a goofy artist in one of their stories which really looks odd compared to the majority of their art. Gen 13 also had this problem from time to time. Please stick with the original and best artists please.
As a Young Justice fan I was disappointed........2001-04-04
In a nutshell the basis for this book is as follows. Adults around the world are getting nervous about the Young Justice team and all other teen heroes. The world media, possibly being encouraged by some person or persons unknown, is making this worse by hyping the image of immature kids with a lot of power. Everybody's got an opinion and as things heat up a mix of magic and technology turns most of the adult heroes into kids and all the kids into adults. Everyone splits up into teams to try to find a way to reverse the mess, all the while the unknown factor behind the media is getting closer to their ultimate goal.
The concept is lighthearted and fun, but combining the stories from various titles meant that while some writing was good, a lot of the writing was rather weak. Overall the different writing and artistic styles made the book feel choppy, and not as though the stories belonged together. I don't regret buying it, but I was disappointed.
Try A League of Their Own (Young Justice) by Peter David and D. Curtis Johnson for a good Young Justice book.
A Reversal of Fortune.......2001-01-17
Personally I really enjoyed this book and the series it comes from the light hearted escapades of the group of youthful heroes--in-training turned adults is both humorous and engrossing. A generally fun read all around. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
An Excellent Read!.......2000-11-13
This book is marvelous! It all starts when Klarion (bum, bum, BUM) the Witch Boy plays a prank on the amassed groups of the Justice League of America, the Justice Society of America, the Teen Titans, several non-affiliated heroes, and, of course, Young Justice. In essence, the age levels of the groups are switched. The Justice Society of America all become near-infants (except for Star, who becomes an adult), the Justice LEAGUE of America all get reverted back to a teen-level, and of course, Young Justice, as well as Lagoon-boy, and Anarchy, are matured into adults. The first thing on everyone's mind is to revert back to their original ages. They all separate into groups to track down what each one thinks will be the cure to their unfortunate condition. The fairly cool part is that each (matured) Young Justice member pairs up with their (former) mentor (now teens). Even Secret pairs up with the enigmatic Deadman to track down Teekl, Klarion's cat-familiar. All in all, this is an AWESOME book.
There's just one thing that upsets me. Like its predecessor, This book glosses over several issues. As much as I would like to know what happens between the first book and this one, at least I can take comfort in knowing that there are no continuity gaps WITHIN the book. By the way, do you know that in this book, Arrowette is not part of the team anymore? I barely managed to discern the reason WHY from the lean background information given in this book. Other than that? NOTHING! This book is stupendous from cover to cover. Anyone who enjoys Marvel's Generation-X, the original Teen-Titans, or just loves a good laugh (especially with some of the teen-Superman scenes) should BUY THIS BOOK!

Picking Corporate Cotton.......2006-03-01
Jill Nelson is the modern day Harriet Tubman, leading the mentally enslaved from the chains of industrial oppression to the freedom of self-determined realization. If you read this missive and don't ask yourself if you've ever compromised your integrity to further someone else's capitalist agenda, you've missed the point of this brilliant body of work. Angst, inner turmoil, and introspection abound on the pages and tell the tale of a woman trapped in the web of office politics and backstabbing that eat at your joy, that erode your sense of self-worth. What is the price of voluntarily whitewashing your identity to please people with an agenda that does not validate or acknowledge the talents you bring to the table as a person of color? It's so much more than the reflections of a sista who got a position with the Washington Post who got a case of buyer's remorse and didn't like her job. This is the impetus to assess what it is that is important in life and to run towards freedom.
You would have to walk in her shoes to understand.......2003-02-04
It is ironic yet predictable that most of the people who don't "get" this book, tend to be individuals who are either not female, African American or both. Jill Nelson wrote an honest critique of the experience that many African American women go through when trying to attain the proverbial golden rings in corporate America. I am sorry some folks could not relate or understand Ms. Nelson's book because the points she brings up are true and still reflective of the socialogical culture most African Americans live in today--approximately twenty years later. The patriarchal blindness that many in this culture experience that prevents them from understanding or relating to another individual or cultures experiences is sad yet expected The best that Ms. Nelson and other writers like her can do is just tell the story and let those who get "it" get it.
Were some of her experiences hard to hear? Most definitely. Were the experiences unique to her? Absolutely not. Ms. Nelson says on in chapter 2, that she has been doing the standard Negro balancing act which is "blurring the edges of [her] being so that they [white people] don't feel intimidated." There are few African Americans, I would venture to guess, who haven't experienced this feeling at one time or another, yet it is virtually impossible to communicate this experience in a way that is understandable to someone who hasn't had to always be "aware" of how they are perceived and how those perceptions can affect other African Americans as well. Ms. Nelson does an excellent job explaining these details and if some people are still clueless, well, it's through no fault of her skill as a writer.
Keep on shedding a spotlight on these issues Ms. Nelson. There are a few out there who are truly looking for the light.
Nearly 10 years later and Nelson's words still ring true...........2002-07-31
Volunteer Slavery is STILL the book! Family, friends and coworkers are probably sick and tired of hearing me raving about the revealing, blistering and gossipy tell-all memoir! It's been nearly 10 years since the book was published, but I still regularly reread certain passages when I need inspiration, a good laugh, or a clearer understanding of the journalistic imbroglio with which I frequently have to deal with--after more than 15 years in the business!! Celebrate the anniversary of the BEST book EVER written about what it's REALLY like being a black journalist on the plantation...the newsroom at a daily newspaper!!
An insightful book........2000-03-27
As an African-American journalist, I found Jill Nelson's book to be very real. Those who criticize the book because Nelson strikes them as naive are missing the point, on at least two levels.
In the first place, though she naturally gets into certain generalities, the book is primarily about HER experience. It's not intended to be a handbook for reporters who are climbing the corporate ladder. Given her past, and her particular personality, this is the story of how she happened to react to a specific set of circumstances. How one judges her actions should be different from the way someone judges the book itself.
And secondly, to the extent that the book does have a larger intent, it calls for the dismantling of an outrageously unfair system. Should we all just accept the status quo, and find clever ways to navigate our way past pettiness and stupidity, or strive for a sane alternative?
The fact is that Nelson has done just fine since she left the Post. Viewed in that context, the book is a testament to her courage, and her insistence on personal dignity.
A rare combination of self-pity that still makes you laugh.......1999-12-16
The only other author I ever read who so effectively combined self-pity and wry humor was Erica Jong. Jill Nelson turns a wicked phrase and makes her characters and her situations jump to life. I laughed aloud at her description of her teenage daughter telling her "Mom, get a life!" in response to her lecturing about black conciousness. All through the book I kept wondering where Ms. Nelson's gripes came from. Because her dad left her mom for a white woman, as recounted in the book? She grew up in plush surroundings, with summers on Martha's Vineyard. As the number of unread pages shrank, I kept wondering if Ku Kluxers in white sheets were going to suddenly show up in the book to explain her bitter feelings about white males. Ms. Nelson said that white men are priveleged, but believe me, we too can be put through the grinder. I'm also a former newspaper reporter, born the same year as Ms. Nelson. When she complained about her reporting duries at the Washington Post, saying "I was too old to chase fire engines," I had to laugh. That's exactly what I was doing at another paper at the time she said that. I don't buy what Jill Nelson says, but I did enjoy the way she tells it.

Red Sea Peril - an eye opener!.......2002-09-17
Having spent my life at sea on Tugs, Ships, Barges & every type of pleasure craft I can get hold of, I have been traveling the world in sweet innocence! To read about such an obviously honest & gentle couple, who would do anything to help anyone they met, who might like help, taken prisoner in this way, seems incredible. I am so glad they were able to gain their freedom & let us read about their ordeal & their friends, relatives & captors. A gripping read, that shows a couple that are so definitely made for one another. Therefore a read with everything:- Travel, Drama, Adventure, Gentleness, Love, Compassion......... What else can a good book have! I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE!
A tale for sailors.......2002-06-21
I have really enjoyed reading Red Sea Peril. I found I could imagine Shirley and Peter, so different, and so complementary at the same time.
I liked the style, the sentences are short, precise, with just enough humor. In fact it was very pleasant to read.
The chapters are just long enough and the flashbacks permitted the reader to set the situation of a sailor's life and the choices you have to make. BUT I would like to have followed with small charts at the beginning of each chapter (what my own editor has asked me to do) with points where you were and where you go. Sailors like to see this.
However, I appreciated very much all the photographs, very well situated. I like very much too the "introspectives" and would have liked even more of them. I enjoyed too the poetry, it rings so "true" and I felt that very much. Even in drama I was aware of Shirley's "joie to vivre".
Finally you hae given me a taste and I wish to read more of your adventures because this book merits it. Ihope to read the next book soon.
