Pioneer cartoon strip, unexcelled for beauty and imagination, in 60 full sequences. Historical introduction.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brlliant, funny, and even a bit disturbing.......2006-02-23

"Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" is McCay's overlooked masterpiece. "Little Nemo" gets all the press (and it deserves the highest possible praise) but The Fiend is often equally compelling. More adult in subject matter than Nemo, it is less visually resplendant, but still quite powerful in its invocation of the fears and hopes underlying our day-to-day thoughts.

This collection is the standard, but it collects only a fraction of what McCay produced (this is a reprint of a 1905 volume, but the strip ran until 1910 or 1911). You can pick up the Checker "Early Works" volumes for a more complete run (in questionable quality) and there are more strips in the Canemaker book on McCay as well as the Fantagraphics "Daydreams and Nightmares" (which I highly recommend).

Someone really needs to do Rarebit right and issue a good hefty collection of the strips in good quality reproductions.

5 out of 5 stars Winsor Mccay in Rarebit land!.......2004-01-16

Winsor Mccay is considered one of the pioneers of cartooning AND animation. His drawing style is so architecturally fine tuned that each panel of his work is a piece of art itself! The Rarebit Fiend has a habit of eating toasted cheese before going to bed and consistently wakes up from a nightmare at the end of each piece. The nightmares vary from the slightly off-kilter, to the maddeningly surreal. This large paperback book reproduces a good number of these, and is well worth the price. Essential for fans of early comic strips.

5 out of 5 stars Nightmares in Cheese.......2001-01-23

Brilliant "grown-up" comic strips by the genius behind Little Nemo in Slumberland. _Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend_ is a sometimes disturbing and consistently amazing foray into some very inspired phantasmagorical scenarios, all resulting from the various dreamers' weakness for toasted cheese late in the evening. Let this be a warning to us all!

5 out of 5 stars Superb guide to children's developmental painting process.......1998-09-17

This book guides the reader through the process of children learning to paint with incredible insight into the child's thought process. Nancy was a mentor of mine at Boston University over twenty years ago, and I have used her ideas in every classroom I have taught in. Her insight into children and the painting process will surely answer many questions about the hows and whys of children's painting. I highly recommend this book to parents and educators, from preschool on up, who paint with children.

      Book Description

Originally published in 1979, Cape Light became an instant classic and one of the most influential photography books published in the latter part of the 20th century. Common scenestiny figures on a beach, a porch railing against a storm-darkened sky, a blue raft against a summer cottageall are transformed by the poignant light of the Cape and the photographers subtle and luminous vision. This exquisitely printed book captures every nuance of color and light in that unique juncture of sky, sea, and land that is Cape Cod.

5 out of 5 stars this is it!.......2003-01-09

I first saw this book while i was looking through the photography section at the University of Guelph library. This book probably influenced my photography more than any other. Unfortunately, it also made me start doing shots with my nikon that are better suited for a large format system. The introductory interview with the photographer is possibly the most interesting discussion on the topic of light and photography. If you plan to become anything more than an amature photographer, PLEASE get this book NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Takes your photographic breath away.......2002-03-04

Ansel Adams said that this book was his favorite book of color photographs (the reason I bought it, long ago). Meyerowitz's use of little contrast, incomparible colors, and unusual subject matter makes this a must MEMORIZE book for all serious photographers. If you don't go nuts over his photographs, you don't like photography as much as you thought you did.......

4 out of 5 stars When genius is bottled like Kandor.......2005-06-08

Thank the gods that Moore did not write many DC superhero stories. The DC universe is too limiting. These are all excellent stories (particularly the concepts), but the mind of Alan Moore is in a straightjacket. It's a little like watching a great pianist doing five-finger exercises: interesting and enjoyable, but not really what you want. By all means buy this book to complete your Moore collection, but buy his ABC work (especially the brilliant "Promethea") first.

3 out of 5 stars "For the Man Who Has Everything".......2004-09-13

It's hard to overstate exactly how much fun Alan Moore's comics usually are. They're inventive, witty, even erudite on occasion. This is not one of those occasions, unfortunately. The two Superman stories in the volume are very good, and a couple of the Green Lantern Corps shorts are very clever, but the rest of the book is marred by the catch-all approach to literature, in which DC apparently looks for a by-line and reprints on reflex, never giving a thought to the quality of the stories. The Vigilante tale takes up more space than any other story in the book and is frankly no good. The same goes for the smaller Batman story (a character for whom Moore seems to have some little antipathy - according to him, his acclaimed "The Killing Joke" remains one of his least favorite works), and the book is simply not large enough to excuse the reprinting of such deliberately shoddy material. Further, DC's new printing of "The Greatest Superman Stories Ever Told" does not, in fact, include the Moore stories from previous printings. Apparently, this book is the only place you'll be able to find those stories anymore, and you'll have to drop twenty dollars on mostly inferior material to find them! Is the book worth the cover price? Grudgingly, I have to say yes, but only for "For the Man Who Has Everything," "The Jungle Line," and a couple of the eight-page GL Corps stories. The rest is that least Moore-like of vices: boring.

4 out of 5 stars Nice stuff, but...........2004-05-09

...other than two very excellent Superman stories, the cream of this crop are three Green Lantern Corps stories. Great stuff. However, they were only part of an overall GLC backup series from the mid-eighties that were done by a who's-who of comics talent that was incredible!

As great as Alan Moore is, and I really do love a lot of his stuff, I would have preferred a full collection of these GLC stories. This collection sells entirely because of Moore's star appeal, but imagine how much better a collection would sell of stories by Moore AND probably one of the best collections of comic talent ever to work on one series (Dave Gibbons, Gil Kane, Don Newton, the list is ridiculous....).

And that, really, is my only problem with this collection. It's existence probably means the other, better collection will never occur.

4 out of 5 stars Some excellent short pieces by the modern master of comics.......2004-03-19

This collection has some excellent short subject work Alan Moore did for DC throughout the early '80s, before his falling out with the company over WATCHMEN. Moore tells several stories featuring prominent DC characters of the period. This includes a fantastic couple of Green Lantern Corps stories, a decent Green Lantern tale, an average Vigilante story, an Omega Men backup story with a nice twist ending, and a rather disturbing Batman/Clayface story. Of all the stories, the GLC stories got my imagination going the most, and whetted my appetite for more stories about them by Moore, which never came and most likely never will. These stories showed he had a real grasp of the Green Lantern dynamic and were wildly imaginative. I highly recommend this collection.

3 out of 5 stars A wide variety of quality, but good overall.......2003-09-26

This trade paperback should go over well with fans of Alan Moore's more prominent and masterful works (Watchmen, Killing Joke, Swamp Thing, LOEG, etc). I will admit that it is nice to have his more obscure DC work from the '80s under one cover, as there are several stories here that I was not familiar with. Even still, the presence of Alan Moore's name on the cover does not mean that this collection is perfect. In fact, if someone who had not read any Alan Moore began with this this collection, I feel that they wouldn't understand what the fuss was about. Some stories are quite good, and some are quite average. As he was just getting the feel of some of these characters at the time, I can allow for some slack. Plus, Alan Moore's "average" is another writer's "exceptional", so just keep that in mind!

Of course, opinions on the quality of the stories will differ between reviewers, but here are my thoughts:

The Good - A Superman/Mongul story that creeps along in the beginning but finishes with a nice dark touch. Three very tight and creative "Tales of the Green Lantern Corps", especially one involving a GL who comes from a world with no concept of light or color. A Superman/Swamp Thing team-up that would have been right at home in Moore's regular Swamp Thing gig. The secret origin of the Phantom Stranger, unnecessarily paralleled with a modern-day reenactment, but still interesting. A Batman story focusing on Clayface III and his obsession with a department store mannequin.

The So-So: A Green Arrow/Black Canary story that succeeds at being "officially grim and gritty" but didn't make an impression one way or the other. Two Omega Men back-ups that could have ended with rim-shots. A Vigilante 2-parter that is far too long - this one was my least favorite, and leaving it out would have been fine by me. I guess it was meant to be unsettling, and the basic story is okay, but the bright cheery art ruins the effect, and the involvement of two prostitutes gets old very quickly and contributes nothing but eye-rolling melodrama.

In closing, I will definitely hang on to this book, as the good stories more than make up for any faults of the others.

The true story of a courageous woman's famous journey in 1889 that took her all the way around the globe in record time NELLIE BLY WAS A NEWSPAPER REPORTER for the New York World in the late nineteenth century. But instead of writing about "ladylike" subjects like tea parties and charity balls, Nellie wrote about the social problems of her day: poor job conditions, dilapidated housing, and dishonest politicians. Many people objected to the things she wrote about. But Nellie Bly was unstoppable. If someone told her "It can't be done, Nellie Bly," she went right ahead and did it anyway. But when Nellie reads Jules Verne's novel, Around the World in Eighty Days, she is inspired to circle the globe even faster herself. Now everyone wonders if this time the plucky young reporter has gone too far. Young readers will cheer for Nellie as she embarks on her 22,000-mile trip equipped only with one sturdy travel dress and a small satchel, and a pet monkey she picks up in Singapore as her traveling companion. Traveling by ship, train, and foot, she has all kinds of incredible experiences-from surviving a monsoon at sea to visiting a leper colony in China. Here is the true story of a woman with an indomitable spirit and love of adventure whose amazing journey will inspire a new generation of young readers.

4 out of 5 stars Around the World in 78 Days -- a review by Maddy, age 9.......2003-11-08

"Most people would probably panic if they had only three days to get ready for a trip around the world. So much packing to do! So many details to arrange!" Nellie Bly, a female reporter from The World Magazine in New York, sets off to beat Phileas Fogg's record of going around the world in eighty days, and aims for 78. She boards the Augusta Victoria with her one little bag, promising The World she will send back cables of her trip. She glides gently on the Augusta Victoria to London, not knowing she has competition. Will she make it?

Nellie Bly's thrilling adventure is both educational and fasinating. Nellie Bly has great ambition and is breathtaking to read about. She is different from other women. She is brave and fair, tough but understanding. She travels the world, picking up culture along the way, with only one bag. How does she do it? She was one of the only female reporters then, and is a very interesting choice to write about. This book is so enjoyable to read it is hard to put down. A definite thumbs up.

But she has just met overwhelmingly sexy John at a business conference. Her head and her heart said, "no way," but her traitorous body shrieked "yes, YES!" Now Connie's deep into a tawdry affair, which is destroying her peace of mind and her grand plan for Happily Ever After. Maybe John is her destiny. After all, she's losing weight. It can't be a bad thing if she's losing weight, can it?

Connie longs to confide in her girlfriends. They've always discussed their sex lives before, preferably over cocktails. But this infidelity thing makes it a trifle awkward. Connie's not quite sure what she wants. And that's exactly the trouble.

A novel for every woman juggling the untidy mix of work, romance, sex, and marriage, Playing Away shimmers with equal parts comic relief and penentrating insight. Adele Parks has crafted a cunningly revealing portrait of the lives of hip, urban women, poised at the cusp of a millennium.

        4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, I enjoyed it.......2006-06-18

This is no great feat of literature - a novel about an affair which is little more than an obsessive ego trip, with a fairly transparent storyline, and main characters which are not entirely likeable -they run the range from too perfect (and arrogant with it) to downright frumpy by way of really annoying...

Despite all of this, however, I did enjoy the book - the subject matter (adultery) is unusual for what is essentially a romantic novel and it is dealt with honestly, though not sympathetically, and if you're looking for a fun read for the beach, it fits the bill.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting tale of love, betrayl and redemption.......2005-07-27

Connie Baker has the kind of fairytale life that other women envy: she is beautiful, has great fashion style, a great job, wonderful friends, and a loving husband of just barely a year.

Then she embarks on a passionate affair with a slutty male colleague. Instead of taking it for what it is - a bunch of shagging - she thinks that John is her destiny, and starts to fall in love with him, not giving a second thought to her devoted husband Luke, who has been putting in too much time in his thriving restoration business.

When she discovers that she is not the only one in John's life, she is devastated. I guess his comment that she is his 100th lover and the fact that they only get together once a week has slipped by her... Anyhow, after this devastating news, and the fact that he is suddenly distant, they end the affair and life goes on. News that her best friend's husband has run off with another woman cuts deep - especially to Luke who cannot forgive his friend for the infidelity.

John suddenly wants Connie back and Luke finds out about the deception. Once Luke is gone, she realizes that she was her destiny all along, and will have to leap through hoops to regain his love and trust again.

It is hard to like Connie. Despite seemingly having it all, she is so full of herself, which makes if difficult to feel she deserves a second chance. I would also have liked to see the characters of John and Luke more fleshed out. Particularly Luke, as he garners more than a casual mention throughout the book - no real time is spent to define his character. It is not the definitive book on the subject, but a quick and interesting character study nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Bridget Jones Diary.......2004-12-05

For us yanks, there just isn't anything this pervy and laced with that marvelous Masterpiece theatre dialogue in the American publishing scene. A romance novel for the new millenium.

1 out of 5 stars HAD to put down!.......2004-08-01

Boy, was this book a mistake to buy. I've read about twenty pages and just don't want to read another word.

When the story opens, the protagonist is meeting and flirting with a man she's met at a business affair (pun intended). First thing that annoyed me -- why would she get drunk and raunchy with a guy in front of her colleagues? Would any of them respect her at the next business meeting??

Connie is a self-adoring, obnoxious, spoiled woman who doesn't deserve what she has. Married to Luke, blessed with good health, good looks, good job, great apartment, her life is filled with sex, parties and happiness.

So what would any intelligent woman do in this circumstance? She has an affair with a guy who has slept with ninety nine women (ewwww) and wants to make her happy 100th. Not that Connie is so pure herself. We hear in great detail that she slept with pretty much anything that walked for any reason whatsoever before she got married.

One would think she'd have gotten it out of her system, eh.

The story may very well end up being one where Connie gets what's coming to her, but I don't care to hang around for another 330 pages to find out. It's not a moral issue, it's more that Connie is completely unappealing to me. She's an embarrassment to womankind and there seems to be nothing redeeming about her. She's the kind of woman where if she were a guy a woman's book would never expect you to sympathize.

I have another book of Ms Parks' to read. Maybe that one will be better. Sure hope so.

        5 out of 5 stars Did I like it? I loved it.......2003-09-03

You know when you watch a film you absolutely adore: you relate to the characters, you're entertained by the script and the undercurrent of creative energy? So you go back and watch the different scenes again and again? Well this was the first book which I had to leaf through to replay the events once I had read it and wished I could be back in the company of the characters. Grateful for the last two pages which at least gave us some hope and sympathy for Connie- oh give over, that ending was for the reader, not the character. Loved it again and again- and I'm a single, unmarried bloke - perhaps a different market altogether.

        5 out of 5 stars Interesting nonfiction.......2007-08-15

Michael Mewshaw's 'Playing Away' is mostly about an American author's living experiences in Rome. It has the 'to the point' nonfiction approach and brings out hilarious effect like only fiction could.

Mewshaw travelled a lot. He says, "in some inchoate way, I equated curiosity with creativity, mileage covered with imagination improved". Despite whatever he believes, the mileage does reflect in his writing.

Mewshaw has written well on what works in Rome and what doesnt, how effective the rules are. He catches the spirit of the place in the celebration around. When he talks about how much of logic and moral suspension you have to do to live in Rome, it is one place where you can easily make the decision of going there to just visit or stay.

In a very effective way he says how 'name dropping' changes to 'difficult-to-visit place' dropping.

The essay revealing drastic steps of feeding poisonous substances to pigeons to control their population made me wonder if someday humans would be exterminated too.

Expatriates would find a voice for their confusion of 'To stay or not' in his writing.

I like the essays on his interaction with Graham Greene and Gore Vidal best, even better than Greene's work.
