A must for young (and not so young) architects and designers.......2000-05-16
Great book on the work of spanish architect E Miralles hisstyle is very peculiar and not easy to pigeon hole as usually happenswith contemporary architects. Miralles work is very inspiring, free form and aggresive. All projects come with a clear description and lots of photographs and drawings. A down things is that graphics are too small some times.
Book Description
Cast and carve, weld and mold, model and rivet: whichever method you choose, sculpting is intense and rewarding. From assemblage to brazing, more than 30 techniques unfold in these beautifully illustrated pages. The pleasure begins with a chart of possible materials: the large menu of imaginative options includes clay, plaster, wood, stone, and papier mâché, as well as more unusual suggestions like aerated concrete block, rubber, and found objects. Create an armature for producing a life figure. Form a bird from such surprising items as plastic coat hangers, felt-tip pen caps, and a threaded steel rod. Form a steel fish by melting metal with an acetylene torch and welding pieces together. Finish off by coloring, make repairs when something goes wrong as you work, and find inspiration in photos of magnificent pieces, all arranged by theme. You'll build a solid foundation for your sculpture-making skills.

Losing place.......2006-06-26
Don't get me wrong, I'm nowhere near the photographer Arthur Morris is, but the emerging world of digital photography has taken the bloom off this rose. This title needs updating for the new world. This book focuses mainly on work done with full-frame film cameras (where Morris earned his reputation), and much of what's here would apply to full-frame digital SLRs. Problem is, most of us can't afford them, and we're forced to using APS-C, smaller-frame cameras. The most significant thing there is that the images delivered to the sensors are the central portion of the full-frame sensor, so a lens connected to the camera "acts like" it has a longer focal length. This impacts things like composition and lens selection, and some detail from the master would have been insightful.
I would like to have seen a more thorough discussion of the use use of extension tubes in front of long lenses (Morris uses them). I am inclined to compare this book less favorably with anything by John Shaw, who very clearly and amusingly gets us into the nitty-gritty details of what AND why we do things a certain way.
I was also a little surprised at the quality of the photographs. Morris is a fine photographer, and the book is chock full of his finest work - but the reproduction of them leaves a lot to be desired. This is not a knock on Morris, but this title is a decided step down from Amphoto photography guides.
I Shoot A Lot More Birds That I Used To.......2006-05-02
I bought this book on a whim, thinking, well I kind of like taking pictures of birds, but they are so hard to get. Then I read this book and learned that with the right techniques and preparation I could take great bird pictures. Birds are now my second favorite subject right after flowers. The author is really an inspiration and his photos are wonderful. Even if you don't focus solely on bird photography, this is a great book and it is fun to read. Plus I learned of the hot-spots in North America for bird photography, which I will be visiting soon.
Excellent guide to bird photography.......2006-03-09
I recently got interested in birding and photographing them to document my observations. This book provides you all the practical information you need to become an excellent bird photographer. The only thing missing is that there is nothing about using the digital camera because this was published before the digital revolution. Author also spends a lot of time discussing the shortcomings of some of the film cameras and lenses. These have pretty much been addressed by the more modern cameras and lenses. Photographs are outstanding. A book worth having.
The Best Bird Photo Book You Could Find!.......2006-03-04
Wow this book kept my attention. I read it in one sitting. I re-read it the next day. The photos are amazing and Mr. Morris is very generous with his descriptions, information, location advice and more.
It's a bit dated, doesn't cover digital and mentions equipment generally no longer available, but the instruction on exposure is as good as I have seen.
Mr. Morris also talks at length about exposure compensation which I found very helpful.
Mr. Morris has a well-deserved reputation as America's number one bird photographer and his background as a teacher comes in handy here. Even if you're not into bird photography, check this book out. Anyone can learn from The Art of Bird Photography.
Out of Date Information.......2005-11-14
This book points out such valuable information as: use a long lens (like the authors $9,000 glass,) and get close. Hey, I never would have thought of that! The book was written in 1997 and deals exclusively with 35mm film media. A large portion of the book is devoted to film types and uses, and exposure and development techniques. Virtually no one, including Authur Morris, uses film anymore. Additionally, the author makes many equipment recommendations for equipment that is no longer even produced. This might have been a valuable publication, when it was written, 10 years ago, but it is sadly out of date now.

Book Description
This book includes real-life examples from over 70 respected organizations, small and large, representing a multitude of industries using stories to drive results. Leaders from organizations such as Microsoft, Lands’ End, Verizon, U.S. Air Force, and World Vision demonstrate the strong positive influence stories can have. No abstract theories or platitudes are conveyed here. The book spells out how Kevin Roberts, CEO worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi, achieved sustained sales growth after several mergers and downsizings caused the organization to fall on hard times. It also shows how Erik Shaw, president and CEO of FivePoint Federal Credit Union, overcame resistance to an organizational name change, resulting in membership growth exceeding the national average.

Once Upon a Time.......2007-08-30
"Once Upon a Time"--when we hear that phrase, it brings back magical memories of someone reading a story to us during childhood. Suddenly, we have warm thoughts of fantasies, fairy tales, princesses, and pirates.
As a professional speaker, I have recognized for a decade that people never outgrow their love of stories. I share stories with my audiences to maintain interest, motivate listeners, change opinions, and relay information.
Prior to my speaking career, I spent twenty-three years in management. For the most part, I shudder when I recall boring meetings, with presenters suffocating participants with an endless avalanche of facts and stats--with nothing in between to inject variety and liveliness.
That's why I welcome this book. Silverman illustrates that stories fit every type of business situation. "Facts," Sylvia L. Lovely says in the Introduction, "inform, but stories resonate." She explains: "Stories connect us in profound ways that go beyond mere intellect and get to the
deeper currents that move us to reflection and inspiration."
This book offers numerous examples from corporate leaders who use stories for training, sales, fostering traditions, reinforcing policies, generating teamwork, mentoring, facing change, clarifying complex financial transactions, and instilling an organization's mission and values.
Even as she supplies many model stories, Silverman still encourages readers to constantly unearth stories from their own locales. They're there, just waiting to be discovered and told.
Wake Me When the Data is Over recognizes that stories cannot replace data--but they can make the necessary data interesting, even compelling.
The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-Change Your Life!
Wake me up when the data is over.......2007-03-31
I found this book to be full of practical guidance about how to use storytelling more effectively in business settings. The book reinforced many of beliefs about the use of story as well as providing a great deal of evidence about its effectiveness. I recommend this book to those who wish to be more effective communicators in business.
storytelling and the wider applications.......2007-03-29
I found this book to be extremely useful in exploring the various applications of storytelling. As a practitioner in the field of organisational storytelling, I am always exploring various applications of the use of story. Lori's research into how organisations have used it has really helped me in my thinking around the applications of this powerful business tool and helped me bring this learning to our Australian clients.
Wake me up when you get to some substance.......2007-02-25
Wake me up when you find some substance to this book! The entire book seems to be a "who's who" of people who use storys, complete with their job titles, degree listings etc. I found virtually no help in how to create or use stories. I found this book boring and a complete waste of my time!
treasures.......2007-02-15
Very stimulating, indeed! Provides a panorama of practical applications of story telling in the private or public sector, derived from interviews with people who use the approach in their daily work.

An interesting read.......2005-05-28
I found this book very interesting. I could relate to the overworked supermom thing and her collapse carried a good message. I saw Mary Kay speak in person and she was riveting. I was hoping the book would also be riveting, but I would have to say "interesting" instead, if only because of some repetition and a lot of talk about how much everyone loves her and thinks she's beautiful when she's in a coma. I understand that this felt wonderful to her, but it's one dimensional and got a little tiresome. Definitely worth a read though. I feel bad not being able to say "5 stars" because I really like her and she's a talented writer.
Burning a candle at both ends........2003-02-22
A witty, honest account of a women's journey to the edge and back.
Too many commitments, too many responsibilities and not enough self assessment on her physical and emotional needs, leads Mary Kay into a 9 day coma.
Her family and friend's love and support during these days and Mary Kay's determination to live makes this story heartwarming and real.
A must read for all women facing the "Super Mom " syndrome.

The story of a schnook.......2006-02-17
Howard Singer must have been or known a schnook. The story even if it seems unsaturated is too real.
Russ is a schnook. Therefore if something can go wrong it will. His wife is into insurance of all kinds. She wants him to get his GI insurance while he can. After she forces him to apply (schnook), he must explain that he has two serial numbers (schnook). When he was shot down over Germany he was presumed dead and needed a second number to get discharged (schnook). So naturally realizing that the (schnook) being in the service only one-day on the second serial number, is called up to finish his time.
He ends up on an island in the middle of the Sea of Japan. There he has a revelation that saves his sanity and that of 400 other servicemen. A plan so brilliant that I am not about to tell you what it is or how it is executed.
At none point when he is on the island he has to relive himself and gets poison ivy. No one believes him and thinks he was the victim of hanky panky. They all stay clear of him until the doctor explains it.
In the book the plan cured his shnookyness; in the movie it takes a trial. The cast includes Dick Shawn as the schnook and Ernie Kovacs as his commander and hotshot fighter pilot.
I am still waiting for the DVD.
I can relate to this as I also have two serial numbers.

Contradiction Sometimes Good.......2007-06-20
From start to finish, this book is about a seething mass of contradictions, named Page.
It's the contradictions that make him interesting.
On the outside, Page is decisive, cutting. On the inside, he hesitates, angling anxiously toward an uncertain future.
On the outside, Page is hard-boiled. He's rough. He's sometimes crude. On the inside, Page is vulnerable. He's quick to cry foul when life pricks his tender spots.
Throughout the book, Page rants, raves, cries, laughs, frets, jokes, mopes, takes a stand, takes a seat, lashes out, shrinks back, runs, hides, comes back.
In short, he's a well-crafted, compelling character - top to bottom, front to back.
Highly recommended.
My brother the author.......2005-08-20
I admit I'm biased, but my brother Jeff can write. Laughed hysterically and sobbed uncontrollably when I first read his manuscript. Now reading it for the 3rd time. He's witty and not so charming. It's amazing how the book reflects his true personality. A must read.
