Great Resource!.......2007-08-23
This book is an excellent resource for studying period fashion. Unlike so many period fashion books, which focus on evening wear or the clothing of the wealthy, this book gives great examples of what the general population wore every day. It will be extremely useful to costumers and fashion students.
excellent resource, lovely photos, neat descriptions.......2007-05-21
This book provides a comprehensive series of illustrations that immerse you in the world of fashion from this era. It is authentic and beautifully laid out, and depicts numerous costume items from the early 20th century, though mostly focusing on women. The pictures depict everything from dresses to shoes, hats to gloves; the women's hairstyles, makeup, undergarments, and overall looks give the reader the most authentic possible view of fashion and the aesthetic ideals of the time. The catalogue also shows the prices and features descriptions that include fabric and color. There are some pictures of men's and children's fashions. This book is thorough and unbelievably beautiful. The whole series of Sears catalogue fashions by decade is amazing. I recommend them all!
The Best Way To Study A Time Period Is Through Examples Of Its Everyday Life.......2005-09-10
Thru illustrations created for the Sears Catalogs of the early twentieth century, clothing--functional, extravagant, glamorous, practical--is reproduced for visual inspection. Great for research, for curiosity seekers who wish to know what our foremothers wore, or in the case in which I used it, this is a perfect reference book to give to a dressmaker to let her see an example of an outfit you'd like to have made. An great book!
Great Browsing!.......1998-09-24
I am totally hooked on this series and hope Dover continues it for 1899-1909 and the '50s and '60s, as well. Note in this volume that the brilliant folk at J. Peterman have copied some of the c1913 skirts in their mail order catalog (I now own two, and they're gorgeous). Thank you, Dover, and thank you, J. Peterman!

Not very pleased........2005-10-08
I can't say much for this book. It's not a tool I found myself using at all. The lessons and ideas aren't bad, but could have been planned out better. Ofton I had to read and re-read a section to understand what was going on, since the ideas presented are in story form, not lesson form.
I don't really use this book at all. I think How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way is a much better book that touches on similar concepts, granted not in a manga way.
Making your manga more dynamic.......2004-11-23
This is very informative book that goes into great detail regarding composition and creating dynamic and interesting panels for your manga! Easy to read with the topics covered mostly in manga story format. It offers lots of examples between non-interesting layout and interesting manga layouts throughout the book. More specifically: composition, character portrayal, voice portrayal, panel design, and manga portrayal.
The information in this book about composition of your drawing can translate to when you draw pin-up pictures. Otherwise, this book is for the person interested in perfecting their manga story-telling techniques. There's tons of info in this book. If you've paid attention to whats in this book, I have no doubt you'll be chucking out interestingly laid-out manga in no time.
All in all, this book focuses only on creating dynamic and interesting scenes and if you want to learn anything else like toning, this book won't help you. The artwork isn't exactly the prettiest but it's the info the matters. I wouldn't exactly call this edition a keeper book as once you know the info, you can't use the book for anything else even for reference. So I suggest you check it out in the bookstore first and determine if it's for keeps before buying. Otherwise, great info, and a recommended must-read for those who are already familiar with creating their own manga and want to add a little more "oomph".
nah..........2004-04-01
Okay this book may have had a few OK pointers and the illustration on the front in awesome. A true example of the saying 'Dont judge a book by its cover."
I'm sorry to say this is one of the weaker volumes of the How To Draw series, particularly in this artist's artistic ability.
I'm sorry to insult their art, but it frankly, well, SUCKED. If something THAT bad is meant to teach you how to draw manga then I dont know what to think.
There's alot of other GOOD books in the How to Draw series, so spend your money there instead.
Where oh Where?.......2004-02-01
This book was ordered on the 2nd of December, and now it is February 1st, i still don't have this book. It was supposed to be a christmas present, and they keep changing the delivery dates.
However, I have most of the series, and they're VERY good drawing/reference books. So if you really like it, its worth the wait.
Book Description
The newest volume in the popular Manga Techniques line is here! This volume focuses on constructing game characters designs for your manga, touching on all facets of manga storytelling and how to use various manga art tools.
Customer Reviews:
Ok, but not very informative.......2006-12-19
This book is mainly for giving you ideas for creating a anime game character. I think this book is cute, but not very informative. It's just samples of the characters face, hair styles, expressions, clothing, and weapon items. If you are looking for a book with a more detailed description of anime characters, then this is NOT the book for you. You will be sorely dissapointed. Well the good thing about this book would be that it can make a good reference book for cute little poses. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend this book for learning anything useful from it, but if you just want it to refer back to from time to time, then go for it.

Book Description
A first-hand account of the remarkable transformation of China over the past forty years as seen through the life of an award-winning journalist and his four Chinese classmates
As a twenty-year-old exchange student from Stanford University, John Pomfret spent a year at Nanjing University in China. His fellow classmates were among those who survived the twin tragedies of Mao’s rule—the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution—and whose success in government and private industry today are shaping China’s future. Pomfret went on to a career in journalism, spending the bulk of his time in China. After attending the twentieth reunion of his class, he decided to reacquaint himself with some of his classmates. Chinese Lessons is their story and his own.
Beginning with Pomfret’s first days in China, Chinese Lessons takes us back to the often torturous paths that brought together the Nanjing University History Class of 1982. One classmate’s father was killed during the Cultural Revolution for the crime of being an intellectual; another classmate labored in the fields for years rather than agree to a Party-arranged marriage; a third was forced to publicly denounce and humiliate her father. As we watch Pomfret and his classmates begin to make their lives as adults, we see as never before the human cost and triumph of China’s transition from near-feudal communism to first-world capitalism.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a novel, Worth reading before heading to watch Beijing Olympics 2008.......2007-10-07
If you like Dai Sijei's "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" or Ha Jins writings, you will enjoy reading this one. John Pomfret's narrative with its keen journalistic candor reads like a gripping novel, though written as a memoir or a travelogue. Just like Dai Sijei's fictional characters Four eyes et al., Pomfret's friends and classmates at Nanda, Little Guan and Old Zhu, real life characters in flesh and blood, stay with us like a Ken Burn's documentary, long after we finish reading about them. You ponder how often life is stranger than fiction ! This is a good book to read before going to China for collaborative work or a fun trip like the 2008 Olympics.
PS: I wonder if amazon.com like their corporate buddies, google and microsoft, censor these reviews about books about China for the Chinese web audience to placate the Chinese Communist Party's Thought Police !
Chinese Lessons.......2007-09-16
This is a fascinating read about life in China during the periods and events of several famous and significant leaders of the country. However, most revealing was the indepth discussion of the authors five Chinese friends and classmates; their lives, their loves and their experiences. His addition to the book of his first hand experiences as a journalist lends credibility to this effort. Well written and a pleasant reading experience; an essential "heads up" to one planning a trip to that country.
Chinese Lessons: five stars on the story.......2007-08-28
A Fascinating look at China from the cultural revolution to the present, as seen through the eyes of five classmates of the Western author. The pain, perseverance, and power of these stories comes through in ways seldom revealed by personal contacts or histories. A thought provoking read.
Wonderful!.......2007-08-18
My goodness, this is SUCH a wonderful book-a must read for anyone with any interest in contemporary China. Just read it!
Chinese Lessons.......2007-08-13
John Pomfret has written an insightful, thoughtful and interesting memoir of life as he knew it in China. This is a 'must read' for anyone interested in exploring the Chinese culture and the demands of everyday life in the People's Republic.

Book Description
Foreign correspondent Bronson Bailey, 49 years old, doesn't know what's wrong with him. Is he burnt out by his many years reporting human rights abuses? Is he simply lonely? Georgine Nichols, a decade younger, knows she's lonely-but it's a child she longs for, not a husband. Unable to have children of her own, George has long since given up hope of having a family, until she considers adoption as a single mother. In this tender, moving story, a little girl in a Chinese orphanage-a child whose very existence is a miracle-teaches them both the life-changing power of love.
Customer Reviews:
A tear-jerker!.......2001-05-22
Since I was a teenager, I have wanted to adopt. Then, when I went to China as a missionary. Many of my friends worked in the #1 orphanage of the city - a discouraging and sad place. My friends told me stories of children, usually girls, disappearing from the orphanages - the rumour was that they had been thrown over a cliff. I avoided the place like a plague until I was "forced" to go, leading a group of visiting students. My heart was broken by two little ones - a toddling girl, and a premature boy. The little girl, about 2, was all smiles & cuddles. The boy, actually a year old, was the size of a newborn. I held him the entire time I was there. Barbara Jean Hicks has expressed an enormous need through a creatively wonderful tale of seeking God's will in our lives. I hope you will all join me in thanking her and praying that God might use our lives to save just one little one.
Beautiful story of adoption and love, and very accurate!.......1999-01-29
When my husband and I began the process of adopting a baby from China, my mother gave us this book. We loved the story of Bronson and Georgine and their search for God, love, and a child. Barbara Jean Hicks has thoroughly researched the Chinese adoption process, and her facts are accurate. Her honesty about the situation of many women and baby girls in China is very touching. The story is more than an inspirational romance; it is a realistic look at Chinese culture, infertility issues, relationship with God, and what it means to be a family. ---Meredith

Book Description
In 1928, Edgar Snow (1905-1972) set out to see the world, hoping to make his mark as a travel-adventure writer. Shanghai was to be a mere stopover, but Snow stayed on in China for thirteen more years. The idealistic young Midwesterner became a journalist and ultimately developed close friendships with China's emerging revolutionary leaders. His 1938 classic, Red Star over China, strongly influenced American views of the Chinese Communists and is still in print nearly sixty years later.
This biography breaks fresh ground with its unique and extensive use of Snow's diaries of over forty years. These writings convey Snow's private hopes and fears, his moods and motivations. Thomas skillfully links them with Snow's public writings and deeds. By recreating the milieu in which Snow worked in China, Thomas provides a clearer understanding of both the man and his times.
Snow came to China devoid of any political agenda or sinological background. He returned home a politically astute China hand and famed journalist-author. His writing had taken on the nature of political action, which resulted in troubled soul-searching that Snow usually confined to his diary. Thomas's portrait of Ed Snow reveals a man caught up in an important historical moment, a man who profoundly influenced, and was influenced by, the events that swirled around him.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant portrait of an American journalist in China........1996-12-20
I read this book a few months ago, but I just stumbled upon
this site today. When I was a college student many years ago
I read Snow's famous book, "Red Star Over China," the work
that first introduced the enigmatic leaders of the Chinese
Communist revolution to a curious Western public. Thomas
deftly places us back in that era as we embark with Snow on
his journey of discovery. I particularly enjoyed the
descriptions of Snow's personal encounters with Chairman Mao,
which I found surprisingly poignant. You sensed that they
shared a personal bond which transcended the political and
historical stage upon which they acted.....

Marvin and Tige by Francesca Glass.......2000-01-06
I found this book to be very moving. It touched a place within my soul. I had to ask myself the question, would I reach out to an individual that is a complete stranger to me, while I myself am down? How many of us would? This book really opens the mind to many situations going on around me every day and am only made aware by reading this wonderful novel by Francesca Glass for people who hearts can stand to be stirred.
