Book Description
While the civil rights movement in America is officially recognized as the period between 1954-1968 ("beginning" on May 17, 1954 when the United States Supreme Court ruled on Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, a decision that outlawed segregation in public schools, through to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968), the struggle actually began long before that. The barbarity of slavery in the American colonies was protested against as far back as the seventeenth century, though it was not until the mid-nineteenth century that the resistance built momentum. This photographic journey of the African-American struggle for equality begins with abolitionists like Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery in 1849 and went on to help others to freedom, and continues to the present. This book chronicles the battle to eradicate slavery through the Civil War (1861-1865) and, then once slavery was officially outlawed, it traces the evolution of its dual! legacysegregation and racism. The struggle for freedom and equal rights involves small acts of personal bravery and sweeping proclamations of legal and moral import; it is the stuff of economics, war, tradition, despair, politics, hope, activism, vigilance and violence. It engages black and white, heroes and the unheralded, public acts of protest and private moments of introspection.

Gorgeous Book.......2005-02-01
This is an absolutely gorgeous book, very comprehensive and tons of excellent pictures
Freedom:Photographic History/African American Struggle.......2002-12-13
This book is a gorgeous coffee-table volume. It is divided into sections by time periods beginning in the 1840s and continues to the present. Each chapter is introduced with an in-depth discussion of what was happening at that time, then moves to captioned photos. The book is large, 10"x12", and is presented on heavy, high quality paper; a pleasure to hold and look at! My only criticism is that readability was sacrificed for design. The type is very small and, therefore, difficult to read, and the caption reference number below each photo is mircoscopic. Also, even though I'm sure the photos were reproduced perfectly, some are hard to make out (what do I expect for 100+ year old photos!) I recommend this book whether you are interested in this subject, interested in photography or just love beautiful books.

Quirky, Useful, Fun, Educational, Expanding.......2006-09-20
Quality, sparingly-used adjectives aren't the bane of good writing and vivid word paintings - ADVERBS are. I find this book invaluable in searching for the unusual, lyrical, 'dead-on' adjective to fit a particular scene or mood. I prefer it to a thesaurus because of its ease of use, smaller size, and 'quirkier' approach.
Yes, there are a lot of words that a reader would not be familiar with. But so what? Sometimes a word is perfect anyway, because of the image its sound invokes, the meaning made clear by the context. You are more likely to be tripped up by the 'uh oh, this writer is using a thesaurus' approach in using a thesaurus than this book.
Besides, thumbing through it is incredible fun, as well as opening one's eyes to potential new vistas.
It doesn't replace a thesaurus, but it's a more-than-worthy companion (I use it more often, by 2-3 times), and is seldom more than arm's length at my desk.
A Book For Rule-Benders.......2005-09-20
Who hasn't heard the belabored rule: Use Adjectives Sparingly.
This book is for those brave souls who resist the great English Teacher in the Sky and bend, maybe even break, the rules.
Almost entirely adjectives, the book provides a quick fix for that stubborn word-on-the-edge-of-your-tounge condition which so frequently afflicts aspiring writers.
Also, included at the end of the book is a Quick Word Finder:
1. Colors (who knew there where so many distinct shades of yellow-chrome yellow, butter, golden, blonde, ash blond, and linen to name a few).
2. Smells (putrid, rancid, stinky, stuffy, sweet, etc).
3. Sounds (bloop, blop, achoo, badow, bang, bzzzz, boyng, bradada to name a few of my favorites).
4. List of Prepositions (and, but, to, across, an, concerning, etc).
5. List of Interjections: (ah, boy, bravo, cheerio, aw, shucks, chop-chop, etc, etc).
Therefore, while not nevery writer needs this reference book, many can benefit from its easy-to-read format, lists and suggestions.
My suggestion: Don't pass this one up.
Awesome, but..........2005-01-01
I agree with the previous reviewers... this is an excellent alternative to a thesaurus. The lists of synonyms each have a definition, so that you can find exactly the right connotation for your taste. I can't count how many times I've looked up an idea in a thesaurus and all of the synonyms I found had exactly the same connotations (red, crimson, scarlet; instead of, say, bloody).
I do have one MAJOR complaint, though - there is no key to this book! There is no Table of Contents or Index appendix.
Sure, the ideas are categorized, but you have to scan through the entire book, page by page, hoping to run across the category you want. It's a HUGE problem unless you've got all of the categories memorized. Sample categories from pages 272-273: Observance, Obstruction, Occupation, Occurance, Ocean. I don't know about you, but those terms don't automatically spring to mind when I'm looking for a word.
Then you get to the "Quick Word Finder" appendix - pages 411-457 - and there are an entirely NEW set of alphebetized categories. You may have to check in both places.
I still think it's an awesome book... but please, please, please, I beg you, authors - add a key in the next edition! Please!
Over five hundred entries.......2003-08-08
Roget's Descriptive Word Finder blends a dictionary and thesaurus devoted exclusively to adjectives, offering thousands of descriptions for people, places and things and presenting a theme organization which brings related words together. There are over five hundred entries which are designed to appeal both as quick references and as browsing material.
Finding the right adjective.......2003-07-20
I am quite sure that almost anyone, who has ever taken an English course in high school or college, had to purchase at least one copy of Rogetýs Thesaurus.
I never knew, until recently, the derivation of the term ýthesaurus.ý Apparently the term had been derived from the post-medieval version of Latin, and it basically means treasure or a storehouse. We immediately associate the term thesaurus with Roget, whose full name was Peter Mark Roget. This brilliant individual was a medical doctor, philologist, scientist and lexicographer, and the first to create a thesaurus of English Words and Phrases.
Quite interesting, the first Thesaurus Dr. Roger had drawn up was in 1805 for his own personal use. Only after 47 years when he was 73 did he reveal this gem that to many individuals is the most important book ever written along with the Bible and Websterýs dictionary. Dr. Barbara Ann Kipfer, author of more than twenty- five books, and who holds a Ph.D. in archaeology, a M.S. in linguistics, a B.S. in physical education, and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Buddhist studies, has put together a book containing thousands of words for describing people, places and things with adjectives. As mentioned in the introduction to her book entitled, Rogetýs Descriptive Word Finder-A Dictionary/Thesaurus of Adjectives ýit is a combination dictionary and thesaurus exclusively for adjectives and adverbs.ý
The presentation is in the form of a detailed thematic scheme, providing a comprehensive reference on adjectives and adverbs for writers. As compared to a dictionary that places relating words apart in their alphabetical scheme of things, the human mind puts them together in categories. This book mirrors, to some extent, the human mind, in that it contains 572 easily understood categories.
This book will invariably prove to be a godsend when you are at a loss for the right word that accurately describes something, someone or some place. As a thematic dictionary, the book focuses on adjectives and adverbs that aid the writer in vividly painting a more accurate picture of what he or she is trying to convey.
As an example, suppose you wish to describe a room as being dark, however, you realize that ýdarký is not the most evocative word. You certainly do not want to resort to clichés, and thus you look up the term ýdarknessý in Dr. Kipferýs descriptive word finder. You will notice you have a choice of forty- four different terms. Perhaps, the room is gloomy, lightless, obscure, or you want to use the phrase ýshrouded in darkness.ý
Although this word finder should not be considered as a replacement for Rogetýs Thesaurus, it nevertheless deserves a place on a writerýs bookshelf as another invaluable reference tool.
Product Description
Roget's Descriptive Word Finder is a unique combination of dictionary and thesaurus devoted exclusively to adjectives. It contains thousands of entries for describing people, places , and things. What really makes the book unique is its structure: Unlike other thesauri that must separate related words due to rules of alphabetization, Roget's Descriptive Word Finder is organized by theme, bringing related words together under specific category headings. These 572 categories are designed to be easy to use and fun to browse. The number of adjectives covered ensures a wide range of both common and unfamiliar words--just what you need to add nuance and originality to your fiction, nonfiction, reports, letters, and more. Bottom line: This incredible collection of words and phrases will help keep your writing fresh, evocative, and accurate--all while avoiding the cliches that make the other writers' work ordinary.
Book Description
A beautiful collection of sensitive and often abstract nudes by award-winning photographer Robert Farber. Newly released in paperback, this bestselling collection is now available to a wider audience.
Customer Reviews:
Big and inviting.......2007-03-26
This is a mix, some sharp-edged still-lifes (e.g., plate 35) and skyscapes (68, 75), among other topics. This is really about Farber's nudes, though. A few (e.g. 37, 78) are shot outdoors. Many of the models appear indoors, where jagged plaster (74) or stony, spare surroundings (85) set off the smooth curves of the model. In others, domestic surroundings (17, 51) set a gentler tone. Most of my favorites are among the studio shots, though. In them, Farber captures many moods, from dreamy distance (22, 28), to affection (69) or a lovingly humorous sense (61) that works at many levels. One grouping conveys a much more complex emotion. In includes Farber's Newseek cover (4) on breast cancer, but others (5, 25, 65) give a similarly defensive feeling, somehow afraid of betrayal by one's own body.
Many of the images simply, almost abstractly express the elegance of the human shape. Some (83 and especially 49) examine the whole woman. A large number are faceless, sometimes captured from behind (6, 66) but more often cropped (13). Even the arms and legs of the model (39, 63) or group (40, 45) may be cropped, leaving only the elegance of the torso. I find something unsettling in these pictures - the anonymous intimacy, but also something I have no good word for. What's the opposite of "disembodied," when only the body is left?
One thing about this collection works badly for me: Farber's fondness for graininess or blur. I like the informal sense of having escaped from a razor-edged world, but the degree and frequency of grain and blur suit an esthetic that I lack. So, on the whole, I come away from this collection with a mixed sense. I enjoy much of it, and big parts of many individual works. Much of it does little for me, though.

Three and One-half Stars.......2006-07-21
This is a book that could have been much better. Most of the photographs present a grainy, soft appearance, with varying degrees of abstraction. Many of the pictures are much smaller than the book's page, and too many extend across two pages--something that spoils the natural coherence and visual flow of a composition. There is a good mix of black-and-white, sepia, and color shots. The variation of natural objects and scenes with nudes is largely effective. Most of the nudes are partial shots, such as a torso. A couple of the photographs are outstanding, but only a couple.
A close look into the world of natural beauty.......2005-01-28
Robert Farber is by far one of the most well known photographers of nudes and fashion. One can not mistake his work, his soft style with a mix of hard grain.
This book is a large collection of his work in nude photography throughout his years in photography. Each plate in this book has its own feel and meaning, drawing the viewer into his work even more. It is no wonder that Farbers works are displayed in permanent collections around the world.
The book is beautifully published on thick warm toned paper, which is perfect for displaying his work, do to the fact that these reproductions are about as close as you can get to the real thing.
The book does not display just nudes either. Scattered throughout the book are chrome shots of landscapes and portraits of flowers as well, hence the name "Natural Beauty". Every page in this book is a wonder. Once you get to the back, a small index of each photo is displayed with text by Farber on how he went about making each and every photo in the book. This is great because you really get to see how he goes about his creative process.
This is a great coffee table Monograph of beautiful photographs that cannot be passed up. This is a very important monograph that all photographers and collectors alike should have. Not many photographers are able to mimic Farbers style, other than the legend David Hamilton and the newcomer Richard Murrian, which makes the works in the book stand out like no other.
excellent artist and book.......2003-04-18
If you are a fine art photographer you already know the artist, he is without a doubt in the top ten today. If you are into fine art this book is a must for your personal library. If you are like myself a photographer who is inspired by incrediable work, both artistically and techincally this is a must for you as well. The images capture the hidden grace and beauty of the female form while avoiding being typed as graphic or other negatives. His style is well defined and the lighting is simple yet effect and the use of cropping guides the viewer along the lines like a short classical musical melody. Come and be inspired.
A beautiful piece of work.......2002-04-16
This book is a wonderfully presented collection of interesting fine art photos. The creative moody use of grain is quite inspirational. It occupies a proud place on my shelf.

Customer Reviews:
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book, but..........2004-08-13
I feel the real value in this book is in how Joe shares his learnings and experiences with many self-growth modalities. In the beginning of the book, Joe shares a few difficult experiences he had in his youth related primarily to his father. Then he moves into his experiences as a follower of Rajneesh. This is followed by his many experiences interviewing and/or participating in some of the most effective and controversial people and organizations in the human potential movement of the 70's and 80's. As you read his experiences you learn FROM him and THROUGH him. My only criticism is that I ran into some annoying typos. I will definitely invest in some of his other work.
Riveting!.......2003-09-21
I am amazed. I didn't know what to expect with this new one by Dr. Vitale. I stumbled across this one after reading his other best-sellers like "Spiritual Marketing." well, this one sent electric shocks through me. The first two chapters alone were riveting. I couldn't believe what Dr. Vitale had gone through.
Then the other chapters were inspiring and informative about healing blind people and walking on water and even---this was wild---astral sex.
This is the biggest book Dr. Vitale has written, except for the one he wrote on P.T. Barnum, and this may be his best. I can't believe he wrote it 15 years ago. Anyway, I think anyone wanting a fascinating book should get "Adventures Within."
A fascinating story.......2003-09-08
I was in my 30's in the decade of 1980. Joe's personal journey of enlightment and self knowledge was one common to mine for the 80's and the 90's.
Reading about Joe's adventures shed new light on my own experiences. It's his frankness of what he saw and how he feels about it in reflection that help me clarify some of my own thoughts and beliefs of the various mentors I sought during those years. Joe brings up many observations about the various high profile personal development movements and groups that most people would shy away from saying. Joe didn't hold back.
Frankly, once I started reading the book I just couldn't put it down. I had to finish it in a single reading.
Joe Vitale's semi-autobiography.......2003-09-06
I've been a fan of Joe Vitale's since I first picked up Spiritual Marketing. After that came The Greatest Money-Making Secret in History! Each book brought me a clearer understanding of Joe today. Then he handed me the draft of what would eventually be titled Adventures Within.
The story answered the question, "What happened to get you where you are today?" Boy, did it ever answer it!
The first 2 chapters are pretty raw and disturbing. At first, I didn't want to keep reading, but I'd promised Joe my thoughts and a quote on copyediting the whole book, so I continued. And am I ever glad I did. The following chapters are fascinating, evoking, thought-provoking and informative. I realized that the first 2 chapters had to be there for the readers to get the enormity of the changes as Joe gets freer and freer through his various courses of study and exploration. I think I've read the book 7 or 8 times, and I learn something new -- about Joe and about myself -- every time I read it.
Talk about SHOCK value...........2003-09-06
Joe's new book, is in a word 'shocking'.
You will absolutely be THRILLED by this book IF:
a) You are interested in what is termed the "New Age" movement
b) You've tried countless "self-help" books and you're still where you are.
c) You believe that miracles are possible.
d) You DON'T believe in miracles, because this book will make a believer of you.
You'll be even MORE thrilled if you know Joe personally, and you THINK you really know him, because you probably don't.
People know him as the World's First Hypnotic Marketer, and the author of countless best selling books, but Joe will introduce you to many other people... who has shaped and moulded his belief system, namely:
a) The boxer
b) The white Witch
c) The Harry Houdini Protege
d) The World's Greatest Preacher
e) Anand Manjushri
These are people you probably never knew existed.
As a bonus..if you read closely enough, you'll love how Joe's relative turned beef into fish, right in front of his very eyes!
And Joe will also take you on a cold hard objective look at the "woo woo" stuff like Fire Walking, Astral Sex...and what will REALLY bring you true happines and fulfillment.
I sincerely belive.. that unless Joe releases something else.. this is MY personal favourite book for the moment. I was not able to put down the book after going through the first chapter...and I don't think anybody will be able to..
It's definitely not hype to say that the first two chapters are 'forbidden'.
In fact I was puzzled when Joe didn't even tell me about this book...until I read it and realized why....
It'll make you laugh, cry, squirm in discomfort.. and go "How DARE he"..
To conclude.. if you love Joe's writings.. you MUST get this book because I really believe that this is the BEST EVER!
Get it!
Respectfully,
Jo Han Mok

Book Description
Travel is greatly shaped by those with whom we travel, and relationships are greatly shaped by the challenges of traveling together—which is precisely what makes this collection, with its specific focus on mother-daughter travel, so compelling. At some times irreverent and funny, at others, thought-provoking and reflective, these stories reveal what happens when mother and daughter step out of the complacent familiarity of routine into uncharted territory. Molly McHaney relates her struggle for independence as she, at twenty-seven, and her mother, at fifty-three, head off on an African safari. Janna Graber brings her ten-year-old daughter to Thailand while she writes an article on child prostitution—and realizes that the subjects of her article are the same age as her daughter. New York Times writer Susan Catto relates her familial adventures on a Canadian canoe trip. Forced to interact in a new—and sometimes harrowing—context, these women offer not only ample inspiration and insight into how travel shapes this most complex and intimate of relationships—but a delightfully engrossing medley of travel adventures as well.

heartwarming.......2004-05-26
The mother daughter bond has been explored from many angles, but never like this. It was heartwarming to read of the stories and see how travel had enriched their lives
A great read and excellent gift!.......2004-02-17
A great collection of stories which explore the internal and external excitement of travel, the cultures we experience, the comparisons to the one we come from, the reasons we are drawn to these places, and most importantly the insights we gain and how they relate to those we love and are closest to. A thoughtfully compiled, intelligently edited and beautifully written book.
Making Connections; Mother-Daughter Travel Adventures.......2004-01-13
I picked this book up to read the story written by Marjorie Ford, whom my husband knows slightly. I ended up reading the book from cover to cover--and I never traveled much with my mother, and I don't have a daughter. It is just a wonderful collection of stories about relationships.
a good read.......2003-09-06
this is a very good book that all mothers who have ever had their own travel adventure with their daughter can connect to. It is exciting and hard to put down. I suggest it to any mother or daughter!
