One of the most beautiful photography books to be published in years,Intimations of Paradise is a wonderful testament to the pleasures of craftsmanship in art. Burkett s masterful use of large format clarity and brilliant color place him in a league of his own. His images are simple yet mystical, reflecting his own unique personal vision of the everyday natural world. As James Alinder states in his introduction, [Burkett] finds the affirmation of life everywhere. In addition to Alinder s illuminating essay, this book also contains essays by noted portrait painter James Reid, Eastern Orthodox theologian and environmentalist Vincent Rossi and by the photographer himself. A must for every photographer. The book contains 73 exquisite color plates.

Christopher Burkett is the heir of Eliot Porter as a master of color photography. He finds astonishing beauty in intimate color landscapes, and this book has the production quality to convey it. If you liked "In Wildness is the Preservation of Life", buy this book! You'll love it.

            6(Luxuriant Red Maple/Kentucky)

5 out of 5 stars "A Cut Above" Color Photography.......2001-12-08

This book represents the best work of the individual whom I consider to be America's best outdoor color photographer. Burkett captures moments, light, and nature in ways that make viewers stand in awe of his photographic technique, photographic vision, and of nature itself.

The production quality of the book is surperb. You can feel the love (and probably pickiness) that went into it.

            Enjoy!

            5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2001-09-02

Unlike the sweeping landscapes we all have become accustomed to seeing, Christopher takes a focused look at the "ingredients" of those landscapes...namely tress and foliage. The vibrant colors are breathtaking and to see his perspective through tighter composition yields a look at nature I had not "seen".

While some of the shots may not have that "in your face" drama, the colors and textures are much more appealing and appreciated after a few moments of viewing. As a product photographer, my "world" is within my studio; all controlled and placed as I want to capture them. Christopher's images bring to mind the challenges of capturing natural subjects.

This book is a nice addition to your collection and a great value with the high production qualities it has.

5 out of 5 stars Out of breath!.......2001-08-02

Fantastic color nature photography book. The quality and reproduction is very high. The images are beautiful. The book is a must purchase for fine art photography fond of and Christopher Burkett is a great inspirer.

It is rather strange how differently comics are seen in different countries, in Japan and continental Europe comics are for children AND adults but the main image of comics in the USA and UK (And Iceland too) is that it is just crap for kids, but thankfully things are sloooooovly changing thanks too more and better comics for the adult market (and I'm Not talking about X-rated comix here) and books like this by Roger Sabin which is an excelent introduction to this genre.

His book start with a general intoduction and definiton of comics and some general terms then in part one he focuses on Britain, part two is about the United States and part three is about different aspects like Women in comics, world comics and comics and the media.

The book is informative, interesting and great fun too read, I would also like to recomend another book by Sabin which could be seen as a companion volume to this one, a coffe table book called Comics, Comix & Graphic Novels, A history of Comic Art, full of colour illustrations and interesting articles.

              Great Fun For Grownups.

                Book Description

When families are faced with crises and challenges— unemployment, the untimely death of a family member, natural disasters and chronic illnesses— those who seem to weather the crisis best are often those who have an active spiritual dimension to their lives together. And in times of joy and celebration families with strong spiritual lives rejoice in deeper and more wondrous ways. But what exactly is it that characterizes faith and spirituality in family life? Identifying resilience, strength, and faith in the stories of all kinds of families, Sacred Stories of Ordinary Families motivates readers to think about how faith shapes their own family lives. Drawn from Diana R. Garland's extensive interviews with 110 families, this book includes stories from ordinary families whose lives together both reveal and rely on extraordinary faith.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Importance of Story.......2007-09-06

Having read Robert McKee's "Story" (Great must-read, by the way, I can say that Diana Garland has captured the importance of "story" and understands the value and importance of passing down family stories. McKee writes that people have an instiable appetite for stories and who would not want to know the stories of our own families--how they got to the place where they are today, what they had to overcome, the values that were clarified by the choices they made.

I always admire real researchers, like Diana Garland, who go through the painstaking process of interviewing people and creating clarity from chaos and turn it into a story. Like bees collecting pollen, Diana has collected interviews and turned them into a wonderful and meaningful story.

4 out of 5 stars Busy and Broken Families CAN Nurture Faith.......2006-02-07

Somewhere someone somehow convinced us that the spiritual life is a private affair; a solitary venture that we undertake as sole individuals. Someone also made us believe that families don't have much to do add to a young person's faith - leave the religious stuff for the youth leaders to deal with on Friday nights. In believing this, we goofed.

Christian growth is a shared activity; it happens best among others, especially our family. Family is potentially the most significant site for spiritual nurturing. In Sacred Stories of Ordinary Families social scientist Diana Garland shows how the daily lives of families possess deep promise for spirituality. Faith shapes how we relate as family and, in-turn, family shapes our faith.

Garland interviewed 110 families and asked them to tell her stories about their faith. Listening to these tales from a group of families diverse in structure, faith, affluence, and experience, she found something very similar - the sacred is cultivated in the context of life lived with those closest to us. Indeed, the "kitchen linoleum becomes holy ground."

The book provides colourful examples of real families making faith real amidst the real challenges, tragedies, and routines of real life. Garland tells us their stories in their words, and we see that we are not so different. The book also includes useful reflection questions and a discussion guide.

We often only realise that what somewhere someone somehow convinced us of isn't true when we face a crisis. We breakdown and, only then, do we realise that the Lone Ranger isn't such an action hero after all; that individualism isn't all that its made out to be. Whether you are in a traditional nuclear family, a blending family, a single adult, or remarried, these stories will enrich your awareness of how faith is woven into our daily life with others.

Sacred Stories (2003) is a part of the "Faith and Families Series" by Jossey-Bass.

                  Book Description

Intimacy. What is it? Contrary to what the tabloids might have us believe, achieving true intimacy with another person is a multifaceted endeavor. Intimacy is the compelling desire and need to be linked to, or connected with, another person. And this linkage can occur in several ways.

Authors Brenton and Margaret Yorgason suggest that intimacy goes beyond the physical closeness a man and a woman can share. Physical intimacy in marriage, as important as it is, is superficial until elevated to the status the Lord intended.

                      Book Description

"Often through ordinary things and ordinary events we glimpse the divine." Living the Sacred Story tells of a seemingly ordinary journey that yielded extraordinary spiritual growth and understanding. From her arrival in Istanbul to her extended sojourn in the Old City of Jerusalem, Bonnie Glassford recounts scenes from an ancient landscape in which people of today live and work. From the perspective of the Ecce Homo Convent in Jerusalem, she encounters Christians, Jews and Muslims living their lives against the rich backdrop of the Holy Land.

Living the Sacred Story follows the footsteps of Biblical figures. It combines travel, spirituality, humour, pathos, new insights, personal growth and Biblical reflection. Within an exotic landscape that is the cradle of western civilization, through encounter with the lands described in classical literature and the Bible, and through meeting the people who now live in those lands, the reader becomes aware of a rich inner landscape that we carry around with us. Ultimately the story arrives at the awareness that in the most ordinary events, and the lives of the most ordinary folk, we see the divine.

This book speaks to the deep yearning and spiritual hunger of our time.

4 out of 5 stars An Incredible Journey.......2004-04-25

Bonnie Glassford has written an intriguing travelogue, and has proven to be a fascinating raconteur. Her story reads like a newsy letter to friends - filled with the minuitae of life in the Middle East and full of detail, wit and wonder.

As someone who has not yet visited the places she talks about, her book brings to life the lure of these far-off counties - their sights, sounds and smells; anyone even thinking of following her trail should have a read through 'Living the Sacred Story'. Her narrative is clear and descriptive, but never boring; the people and places she comes across are described in a style that is both reverential and real.

                      4 out of 5 stars Remarkable!.......2004-04-04

This book tells of the author's experiences and adventures when she went to the Middle East to explore her faith and spirituality. Her descriptions of the landscape, climate, culture and people make it easy to imagine you're with her on the journey. I particularly liked the addition of historical information that was relevant to the situation being described. The author's interactions and relationships with the people dispel the sterotypes created by the media coverage of the region.

By the time I finished the book, the Holy Land had become a real place, with real people, living real lives in a remarkable setting but often under difficult circumstances.

                      A facinating read!

                      Book Description

These stories about Kurozumi Munetada (1780-1850) show us a spirituality for everyday living. He was a Japanese priest, poet and healer who looked to the needs of all humankind. We see in them Shinto affirmation of life, for he was a healer of both spirit and body. He was a teacher, showing people of all walks of life the Confucian emphasis on sincerity as the principle of true life. The key to both sincerity and health is overcoming egoistic attachment, a basic teaching of the Buddhist side of Japanese culture. Making it all possible is devotion to Amaterasu the Kami of the sun, who entered his life in a moment of ecstatic unity and who may be realized in each moment of anyone's life as the source of happiness and vigor. His ability to show how that is so drew thousands to his side in his lifetime, sparking a movement that continues to this day in the Kurozumikyo Shinto denomination.

                      Book Description

Why would a promising young lawyer pass up high-paying job opportunities to work with the poor? Why would anyone trade security for service? Why would any of us give of ourselves for those in need?

In this compelling new book, Michael Maiello does much more than take us on his journey from law school to Catholic Charities, the largest social service agency in the country. Through poignant vignettes and stories of people whose lives have intersected with his, Maiello offers us glimpses into the hearts of those in need and into the heart that serves them. His rhythmic writing and incisive insights call us back to what really matters in life and teaches us how much our help is needed in healing one another.

Having spent the past twenty-four years as a social worker, attorney, and administrator at Catholic Charities, Maiello shares his profound belief that no matter how vulnerable and downtrodden we are, God's limitless love infuses us with dignity and offers us hope. The stories that comprise Sacred Moments, Holy Days tell the much bigger story of God's love and the human capacity to embrace and share it. This is a book for anyone who believes in the vocation of service and solidarity.

Here's the disclaimer: My father is the author.

So I'll keep this brief -- folks who are interested in the facts of hard living in an era of urban decay will enjoy this book and find it quite informative -- drifters, homeless men and women, mentally disabled people about to get evicted... they all get an honest and fair hearing in this book. If you're interested in theology and religion, he provides much to think about. But there's no dogma in these pages. I would honestly reccomend this even if I weren't related to the author but I also honestly wouldn't have picked it up on my own. I guess I'm doubly lucky to be his son.
