Lots of info but not needed........2005-10-09

bought this book for a building systems class (something i dont normally do) but my prof asks questions out of it every class. that said, this book has a lot of stuff in it that relates to construction, which is nice. although as a senior level architecture student i dont think this book is really needed. most of the stuff i know, as common sense, or is easily availabe on the internet and in other resources. overall though id say if you dont know alot about construction of residential buildings id try to find a used copy or get a copy from the library and copy the pages you need. deff not worth the 80 some dollars for it.

A modified "Fundamentals of Building Construction".......2003-02-04

This is awfully similar to the book in the title. Even down to the same photos separating the chapters. I'd buy F of BC if I had to choose, since it has so much more material. There's nothing in here that cannot be found in the two other Rob Thallon books.

Great book, but overpriced.......2002-10-24

I bought this book sight unseen because I also have Rob Thallon's book "Graphic Guide to Frame Construction" and was pretty impressed with it. While "Fundamental of Residential Construction" is a very good book on all aspects of residential construction, there's isn't that much of an improvement on the typical voc-tech textbooks on construction (which are available for less) to make it worth the price.

THE reference for Designer, Builder, or Student.......2002-03-12

Fundamentals of Residential Construction is a welcome update for my reference library. As a residential architect, it is refreshing not to have to wade through irrelevant commercial methodology. This edition is residential specific, but broad-based covering alternative building systems and the most current construction materials. I especially appreciate that it begins with chapters on the context for construction, and the construction and design communities, areas of discussion most often neglected. The well-balanced mix of diagrammatic and photographic details is very helpful. I highly recommend it for both the student and the professional.

A Great Book!.......2002-01-03

Its simple, well-illustrated explanations make understanding and implementation easy. It covers every aspect of residential construction, including trowel trades, mechanical and structural systems, and landscaping! In a nutshell- this is a 'must-have' for anyone working in residential construction!

this is the core syllabus for a class i'm taking. we complete the assignments that are in the book. the projects are useful and clearly explained and comes with all files on a cd.
after completeling the book, one should have a solid foundation of basic operations w/in photoshop, illustrator, indesign, etc.
i'm happy with it.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach........2006-12-17

This takes the basic information that can be found in the manual or anywhere on the 'net and repackages it as yet another How-to computer book.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, it is full of errors and examples that make you cringe, both in taste and demonstrating the author doesn't really know how to do it.

When you are reading how to correct a photo in Photoshop, nothing puts you off more than that the example shown is badly corrected. The same goes for all the aesthetically challenged examples and the book itself.

How difficult is it to design and layout an attractive, easily navigated and organised book on graphic design if you are in fact a capable designer?

Unless ofcourse you are not.

A good choice for use in a classroom setting.......2006-02-28

I found this book to be very useful in the introduction to digital graphics I teach at a community college. Because we have to go over OS X, Photoshop, Illustrator and QuarkXpress in one semester, time is limited for each of these software programs. However, by choosing the tutorials in the book that address specific techniques needed to complete the semester projects, I can cover a lot of ground in a relatively short time. This procedure worked especially well in the Photoshop chapters.

This is the best resource book I have ever seen about all aspects of digital design. It covers computer basics then has sections on print and web. Descriptions are clear, easy to understand, beautifully illustrated and absolutely up to date. This is a must-have book for teachers.

This is something a new graphic/web designer will refer to, if he/she needs to know about certain terms used in the business or about the tools that he/she may need to get his/her job done. It doesn't go into details but provides enough information to go further. Excellent layout, design and printing.

At the turn of the last century, there was a sense of dissatisfaction within both the American and European photographic communities. In 1902, an avant-garde band of photographers, led by Alfred Stieglitz, began to champion their work as art, rather than as a mere form of documentation, in an exhibit at the National Arts Club in New York. They called themselves the Photo-Secession and are considered to be the best and most original photographers of their day. This group included luminaries such as Edward Steichen, F. Holland Day, Frank Eugene, Gertrude K&aumlsebier, Clarence H. White, and Stieglitz himself.

Stieglitz and the Photo-Secession, 1902 is the first book to re-create that monumental exhibit, with 100 color plates complemented by text from noted art scholar William Innes Homer. This beautiful book and remarkable tribute to Steiglitz and his contemporaries is a must for all lovers and students of photography.
