This book is very helpful for students and professionals seeking to further knowledge on the history of architecture and interior design. Very detailed information.

5 out of 5 stars A definitive must for ID Students studying the History.......2007-01-26

Well, I youre thinking between this and Piles' History of ID then this is a much better book. Each style is explained with great details, and black and white photos and sketches are really helpful, and in the middle of the book is about a dozen of color photos of interiors.
I used this book a lot for my studies of the history of id.
If you're looking for a book full of photos of interiors and fancy words then just don't bother buying it since you wont find them in this book

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book -Dont miss it.......2003-06-10

This is an outstanding book, with plenty of pictures - great insider material on furniture and architecture. And I already have a design MA with my own firm.

2 out of 5 stars Underwhelming and overpriced.......2002-02-02

The text of this volume is decent and well organized but in the area that most designers are interested in, visual examples, it is sorely lacking. A very minimal section of color photographs (which jump from Roman to the Renaissance. No sign of the Gothic)and a series of low contrast black and white ones are augmented with a series of uninspired drawings. All of this might still be helpful and useful were it not for the price. There are many volumes on furniture and decor that have come on the market recently which are superior in their content and priced more reasonably.

3 out of 5 stars Better for furniture/antiques dealers than designers.......2001-03-27

This book is a good encyclopedia of the history of interior design going back to ancient era- it catalogues the general overview for each period chronologically, explaining the function and materiality of a space or piece of furniture. The book is particularly nice for classifying particular styles of furniture and may be more suited to an antiques dealer or furniture dealer than a professional interior designer. The major problem i have with the book is that most if not all of the photographs are black and white, and it completely skips the modern era of design, pretty much ending with the turn of the 19th century. No mention of my favorites like Mies van der Rohe or Mr. Wright. This absence somehow makes this book seem incomplete.

Book Description

A fascinating overview of the golden age of floral art! The Art of Flowers is a magnificent look into the very best in 19th century botanical illustration by such renowned artists as Pierre Joseph Redouté, George Brookshaw, Jane Loudon, Georg Ehret, James Andrews, Rogert Tyas, James Sowergy, and Clarissa Badger. Packed with scores of dazzling, full-color reproductions-many of them rarely seen before-this incredible book displays how the best artists of the era coaxed blossoms to flower on paper. The Art of Flowers begins by exploring how this artistic genre developed, discussing how some simple botany basics came to enhance the art of drawing flowers. It goes on to celebrate the wonderful passion for flowers that flourished in the Victorian era and discusses the beautiful botanical periodicals that swept through England and America. In fact, many of these periodicals are still popular with today's collectors for their dazzling illustrations. Next, readers will discover the intriguing phenomenon of language-of-flower books: charming and hugely popular references that assigned sentimental values to flora . . . and were often accompanied by poetry and delightful dashes of morality. These guides explained to gentle readers how to use flowers to send secret messages to lovers and admirers. Finally, The Art of Flowers provides a fascinating section of rare how-to-draw flower books from the 19th century, complete with ready-to-use templates for copying such flowers as anemone, clematis, dahlias, daisies, lilies, daffodils, pansies, roses, and more. Written by an esteemed authority, The Art of Flowers is a magnificent display of rare art and how-to instruction-the perfect addition to every art lover's library and a delightful gift for anyone who gardens, paints, or simply loves flowers.

This book is a compilation of several of the masters of botannical illustrations -- and even has a few how-to pointers. I found the stories about the painters interesting the the color plates irresistable. If you seriously like botannical illustration, this one is an excellent addition to your collection

    Book Description

Daughter of Art History is an elaborate deception; a fake art-history in which Rembrandt, Jesus Christ, Van Gogh, the Mona Lisa, Frida Kahlo, and Cindy Sherman have all been hijacked and replaced. Where once the viewer’s gaze met the eyes of a reclining female nude, a European master painter, or a Western religious icon, that gaze is now returned by the hauntingly photo-realistic eyes of a Japanese man.

Since the early eighties, Yasumasa Morimura has been invading the established canon of Western art—offering both wry commentary and loving tribute—by replacing the figures and faces of its well-known masterpieces with his own. After painstakingly recreating the surroundings of some of art-history’s most iconic paintings, like a chameleon, Morimura assumes their subjects’ identities through elaborate makeup and costume, and inserts himself into the scene. To view the resulting photographs is an uncanny experience.

Daughter of Art History begins with a foreword by renowned art historian Donald Kuspit who describes Morimura's art as "a kind of Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk, in which painting, sculpture, and photography form a seamless conceptual whole. His photographs may be mock masterpieces, but they are nonetheless masterpieces, for they show mastery of three mediums usually regarded as irreconcilable."

Morimura has shown extensively in international solo exhibitions, and his work is in the collections of the Yokohama Museum of Art; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; The Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth; The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

5 out of 5 stars Funny in Every Way.......2001-10-23

Bill Hoest is one of the best funny men around. And Leroy and Loretta (the Lockhorns) are his champions. These two blast one another in every possible way, and their marriage counselors as well, while delivering tons of laughs.

If you want to have a really good time, lift the cares of the world off your shoulders for awhile, and enjoy a tremendous laugh or two along the way, turn to the Lockhorns. It is a book I have read more than once, and I laugh outloud every time.

I highly recommend this book and any book by Bill Hoest about the Lockhorns.

    5 out of 5 stars Funny.......2001-10-23

I love the Lockhorns. Larry and Loretta fight their way through married life like two champions who just will not go down with a punch. Bill Hoest has a really good look at life in all its inexactness and irony. And we can laugh. There is a lot of Larry and Loretta in every relationship and it helps to see the real pros going at one another and still managing to stay together. If Larry and Loretta can stick it out, so can we.

There is real fun here, and that is the main reason to visit with Larry and Loretta. Fun. You will laugh with each turn of the page, and be truely sorry for the end of the book.

I highly recommend the Lockhorns by Bill Hoest.

    5 out of 5 stars A real hoot!!.......2001-06-30

Everyone's battling couple are at it again. These strips from the 1970's are from creator Bill Hoest, not his wife who currently writes the strip. Not appearing in enough newspapers, this is perfect for anyone who needs their Lockhorn fix.

Leroy drips venom and Loretta is perfect as his long suffering wife. Leroy always criticizes his wife's cooking and once he told her he wanted to use it for exhibit A. In this mood, my favorite strip in the book is where they are eating out and Leroy says to the waitress, right in front of Loretta, "What do you mean home cooking? Why this is delicious!!"

Have a hard day at work? This is the perfect antidote to make you forget your day. Buy it right away.

    Book Description

In the second volume of his autobiography, Mencken recalls his early years as a reporter. On January 16, 1899, H.L. Mencken applied for a job with the Baltimore Morning Herald, much to the editor's amusement. But Mencken persisted, and came back to the offices night after night until finally, in February, the editor sent him out into a blizzard to see if anything worth printing was happening on the snow-covered streets. Soon, Mencken was assigned to the police beat, and then to city hall, where the really big crooks worked.

Mencken learned his craft so well that by 1901 he became the Herald 's Sunday editor, and by 1906 was hired as an editor of the Baltimore Sun, where he quickly attracted a national following. Sustained by a steady diet of crabs, cigars, whiskey, and beer, he haunted Baltimore's jails and courtrooms, its churches, theaters, and saloons, and chased fire wagons, interviewed cops and coroners, battled politicians and crusaders, and raced back to the newsroom to beat his deadline by a second or two.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars H.L. Mencken: The Sage of Baltimore.......2000-06-16

It's great to see that much of Mencken's work is still available to the common people. It shouldn't be isolated in Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library, and/or Johns Hopkins' University.

The H.L.Mencken room at the Pratt, has been called "the cradle of 20th Century literature." Alistair Cooke, said it exists..."for the comfort of sinners and the astonishment of the virtuous."

As you can see, the author of "Newspaper Days: 1899-1906", was regarded as an iconoclast during his lifetime, and is still celebrated for fresh, refreshing views and commentary. H.L. Mencken was, above all else, a critic.

Mencken wrote his autobiography in three separate volumes cumulatively known, in the world of journalism and literature, as the "Days Books". In addition to the work under consideration here: "Newspaper Days", the other two are "Happy Days: 1880-1892", and "Heathen Days: 1890-1936." As the title suggest, this book looks at H.L. Mencken's life from 1899, when at 19 he began his half-century career in journalism - at the now defunct Baltimore Morning Herald - through his move to the local newspaper of record: The Baltimore Evening Sun. This relationship with the Sun Papers (there was also a Morning Sun) lasted until 1950, when H.L.M. retired from the board of parent A.S. Abell Company.

It was apparent, even this early in the career of "the irreverent Mr. Mencken", that his niche was writing opinion and criticism; some of it shocking to the establishment; all of it entertaining.

Don't let the early period under discussion in this book (1899-1906) lead anyone to believe that the material is dated or old fashioned. Au contraire, Mencken is indeed talking of events which occured a long time ago, but evey word is perfect for the job it is called upon to do. His diction and syntax are all-important.

After all, the reason for remembering and reading a critic of an earlier time, like Mencken, is not the issues he wrote about, but the manner in which he said what he said. It is the WAY he said it -- he was a stylist.

A great man. A great book. Enjoy!

                      Book Description

Knut Hamsun Remembers America is a collection of thirteen essays and stories based largely on Hamsun's experiences during the four years he spent in the United States when he was a young man. Most of these pieces have never been published before in an English translation, and none are readily available. Arranged chronologically, the pieces fall into three categories: Critical Reporting, Memory and Fantasy, and Mellow Reminiscence. The pieces in this collection tell us something about the development of the worldview of a man who became a great writer, only to jeopardize his reputation by defending the Nazi oppressors of his own people.

4 out of 5 stars Growth of the Author.......2007-08-28

"Knut Hamsun Remembers America" is about the 10th book by this Norwegian author that I have read. I was fascinated by his work ever since I read "Growth of the Soil". In "Knut Hamsun Remembers America" we get 13 seperate stories/essays about America and/or his observation of life in America. I was particularly interested in the accounts of his time spent on a bonanza farm in North Dakota, my state of residence for over 25 years now. Hamsun isn't above complaining about a variety of the aspects of American life. He especially seems bothered by the extent of our work ethic (at least in the last 15 years of the 19th Century). His thoughts on the subject are that we do not take sufficient time for relaxation, arts, and literature. It was an interesting insight to the European perspective of American culture that is largely still true in the 21st Century.

The best part of "Knut Hamsun Remembers America" is to be found in the middle of the book amongst his semi-autobiographical fiction about life in the Upper Midwest. Several of these stories were part of the collection found in Hamsun's "Tales of Love and Loss". The stories display the talent of Hamsun as he engrosses us in stories that lack much flair but convey an atmosphere worth experiencing. His final story is another fine example of that style. I enjoyed it yet had to admit that it concerned a recollection hardly worth sharing. Hamsun has always been a shrewd observor of people around him. Unfortunately, his observations during WWII left him without much support as an author in later life. Enjoy the man for what he wrote rather than what he was and you'll see why he won the Nobel Prize for Literature back in 1920 or so.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing perspectives on American civilization.......2003-08-08

Written by Knut Hamsun (1920 Nobel Prize winner for his novel "The Growth of the Soil", and who later became infamous for betraying his country of Norway to support the Nazis even as Vidkun Quisling did), Knut Hamsun Remembers America: Essays And Stories 1885-1949 is inherently interesting presentation of thirteen essays and stories based on Hamsun's experiences during the four years he spent in the United States when he was a young man. Translated into English and edited for a contemporary readership by Richard Nelson Current, these individual pieces reflect the negative side of "Yankeeland" all too well, though they are not unilaterally anti-American, and some even recall fond images. Knut Hamsun Remembers America is recommended for its gripping and absorbing perspectives on American civilization, while reflecting Hamsun's anti-Americanism in his perceptions and writings.
