Eye-candy -- but also brain-candy.......2006-01-31

I've long been interested in the Japanese approach to design of all sorts, but especially architecture. Coming from a much different tradition, the solutions to problems and needs for shelter are often very different than those arrived at by architects with Euro-American tastes and training. Some of the examples depicted so beautifully and discussed so shrewdly in this volume are rooted strongly in Japan's history, such as an old farmhouse relocated to Tokyo and fitted into an urban neighborhood. Others are playful, like the house with a lawn on the peaked roof, watered by a sprinkler system on the ridgepole, and with the courtyard floored in clay roof tiles. There's a two-story "miniature" house with a footprint not much larger than two parking spaces, but which still manages to be a very comfortable environment for actually living in. And, naturally, there are structures *so* experimental, you might not realize they were houses if you weren't told. There are homes in this collection I would love to live in, and others that would probably give me nightmares, but all of them are fascinating.

This book provides total eye candy for design enthusiasts. Not your typical formulaic shoji screen stuff. Very original solutions to design problems from a Japanese perspective. I find it very inspiring and look at it all the time.

Stunning spaces!.......2002-02-08

This book is filled with page after page of stunning rooms and living spaces in Japan. A must for anyone who believes all Japanese live in cramped, dark, unattractive homes. An excellent conversation starter and coffee table book.

I looked at the book Draw 50 Aliens. I thought it was a good book because it has easy steps for drawing the aliens and UFOs. I think kids in 4th and 5th grade who are good drawers would like this book I recommend this book to people who love to draw.

This really helped my drawing talent. It taught me How to draw in a different way then i am used to. i rate this book five stars 'cause that is pretty much what it deserves.

Draw 50 Aliens plus.......2000-06-04

I bought this book for a younger friend who likes to drawstange creatures. I used to teach art to children and used a number ofthe Lee Ames books in my classes which were always a big hit. I noticed that not all children can follow the visual step-by-step instructions but those that did usually had a great time and good results. This books seems to be of the same quality as the other Lee Ames books I've purchased.

A Wonderful Book for Children.......2000-02-04

Ric Estrada, who illustrated this book, has come up with some wonderfully imaginative characters that show the younger reader the basics of drawing a cartoon character. Mr. Estrada, a forty year veteran of comic books and animation, shows how the building blocks of solid design are formed from the simplest of shapes. Not only is this a great learning tool, but the names and commentary inside are quite entertaining as well. I highly recommend this book.

Lotsa Laffs........2001-10-26

"Pogo" is side-splittingly, screamingly funny. The southern-fried gumbo dialect, absurd notions, manic action, and lush artwork put slapstick, satire (plenty of satire, you'll learn a li'l history reading Pogo), and recycled old vaudville gags in a congenial mixture that stands up extremely well two generations after the strips in this volume were penned. The forewards to the strips are helpful for us young 'uns that don't get all the silly Adalai Stevenson gags. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the funnies.

Second time around, still a fun book.......2001-06-30

I have previously purchased all ( over 20 ) of the POGO comic strip collections. This book did not add any new material, but since it is a current printing ( some of mine date to the 1960's and all are in paperback ) with high quality printing, I think it is a keeper. By the way, I am not a "serious" book collector, I buy books I want to read, share, and have fun. None of my collection is for sale, and no "serious" collector would want paperbacks with pages falling out and wrinkled covers, but for me -- for me, the delights of having my Dad read POGO while putting on special voices for Pogo, Albert, Churchy, Howland Owl, Deacon muskrat, and lots of other critters...

This is a fun book.

Rick Fung is mistaken when he writes that these are previously uncollected strips. I purchased the book for someone who already owned "The Incompleat Pogo", and so far we've been unable to find anything that wasn't included in the earlier collection.

Worth buying if you don't have access to the larger out-of-print collections, but a great disappointment to us -- it's heading for the used bookstore....

Walt Kelly at his finest!.......2000-09-15

Volume 11 of Fantagraphics continuing series shows us a selection of previously unprinted strips. This book falls neatly between Pogo Papers and Incompleat Pogo. The wit and satire are just as strong as ever.

Buy this if you like Pogo. Buy this if you enjoy well drawn cartoons. Buy this if you like a little odd ball humor and a touch of pathos along the way.

Just buy this and get in line for volume twelve. Right behind me.
