Book Description
1,200 high-quality color images of landscape and garden elements, in print and on CD-ROM (runs on Windows and Macintosh platforms). Third in the Surfaces series, this collection of photographs catalogs elements of the natural world: trees, shrubs, flowers, foliage, grass, fruits and vegetables, stone and sand, water and sky. The photographs catalog images of nature used in art and design, with detailed views of natural elements, plant portraits, and pictures of landscape installations, gardens, and scenic vistas. Horticultural pictures are captioned as to botanical and common names. Images are coded and cross-referenced in the index and on the CD-ROM, making the book a compact picture file for illustrators, landscape architects, designers, and graphic artists. With an illustrated glossary, resource sections, and interviews with professionals in landscape design and botanical illustration, this is a great book for students.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource Book.......2007-01-05
I bought this book as a resource for Theatre Design and it has proven to be a valuable asset. I can look through the photos in the book while researching and use the CD to put together presentations. The book's overall content is wide ranging and detailed, and is organized well. I would recommend this book to anyone in the arts, even if you don't use it for research, it's cool to look though.
Once again... Amazing.......2005-08-19
This book is one of the best references for any designer and painter in the industry. Color Photos are amazing and complete. I have been wanting to purchase it for years now and am very glad to add it to my collection. All of her books are worth having in any artists library.

Book Description
One of the first modern European artists to be acknowledged in Latin America, Lucio Fontana is also one of the first of his ilk to be influenced by the cultural reality of this region. Through his poetic inventions, he impregnated the Brazilian art scene with a hypothetical problematization of space and subject; his "wish for space" paralleled similar concerns expressed by his Brazilian counterparts. In Lucio Fontana Brasil, the dialogue between the two is explored through instances of collation, approximation, and comparison, and is traced to their shared origins in Western art traditions and its developments in South America.

Customer Reviews:
LOVED IT.......2006-01-25
This book is amazing!!! The photos are spectacular, and the author is very descriptive -- he makes you feel like you are actually there. Recommend highly.
what it is like to work and wonder way way down under.......2005-06-28
This is a clearly written, funny, moving and fascinating account of what it was like for the author to work in Antarctica over a number of years. While he has told it like a one-year trip, in fact it is a distillation of 14 years experience.
The book is distinguished in several respects. First, the photography is wonderful - just it is worth the price of admission. Second, there is the story of working there as a scientist, in particular the work underwater. It is really fascinating and full of quirky tidbits, like mummified seals thousands of years old or the faulty insulation of some fish. Third, there are the personal tales of what it is like for the residents, and they are harrowing not in any adventuresome sense, but in the psychological demands placed on them. Women beware of living there with so many hungry males!
Warmly recomended. It is also beautifully written from a stylistic standpoint. Truly a mini-masterpiece of the genre.
First Person Text And Beautiful Photographs.......2005-05-08
The author, Jim Mastro, got to spend one year at the bottom of the world and he wrote first person text and included beautiful photographs in his presentation. Some of the photographs capture the incredible beauty of Antartica and of the beauty of the wildlife.
Better than expected.......2003-06-19
I expected a tome from someone who worked in Antarctica, heavy on the narrative, light on coffee-table book quality photographs. I was pleasantly surprised to find a fine quality book with excellent photographs. Well-written and nicely laid out, this makes a good introduction to modern-day Antarctic history.
I've read the account of the doctor who had breast cancer and her rescue "Ice Bound" as well as a scientist's account of working in the Antarctic area, "Crystal Desert". Neither of them were as good as this book.
I've travelled to the Antarctic peninsula (as well as the fantastic South Georgia Island, a sub-antarctic island), and it's a wonderfully beautiful place. Some of the photographs capture the southernmost continent's incredible beauty and equally fantastic wildlife.
Recommended.
The reader is part of the voyage.......2003-04-06
If you are in the least bit interested in Antarctica, as I have been for about 20 years, READ THIS BOOK. Mastro is a brilliant travel writer whose simple, witty, easily enjoyable style keeps you feeling as though you were there experiencing the whole thing yourself. An amazing narrative insight into several different areas of the frozen continent, in weather conditions beyond belief, as well a trip below the ice on a diving expedition, and a trip to Bird Island on the Antarctic Peninsua. I learned so much form this book! It would be well worth the price even if it were only in text form. The amazing pictures throughout it really add to the sense of what it is really like there.

Customer Reviews:
A Seasonal Feast of Hilarity and Fun!.......2007-08-09
Get ready to Ho Ho Ho and Ha Ha Ha your brains out with this truly wonderful collection of Garfield Christmas Comic strips to the year 2002! Although, like many Garfield fans, you probably have either read or read and memorized all the Christmas comics from the furry fat cat over the years, there is something truly wonderful about having them basically gift-wrapped and put into one book to peruse at your leisure.
But that's not all that's in this wonderful collection. In an effort to keep Garfield-addicts like myself in perpetual penury, Jim Davis and Co. have added about 15 pages of extras such as "Big Fat Mery Holiday Tips" and "The Twelve Snacks of Christmas" sections that are found in the middle.
This alone might not be enough to induce anyone but a hard-core Garfield fan or collector to buy the book, yet they do add a few nuances not found in the collection of strips that are published annually. Moreover there is something very nice about being able to turn a few pages and see how the strip and the writing has evolved since Jim Davis began publishing it in 1978 - and it's all in colour too.
A really neat little collection and a great book to buy for the Garfield fan at home or abroad. And whether it is December or July, cold or hot, "Season's Eatings: A Very Merry Garfield Christmas" is sure to keep the spirit of Season, and the spirit of humour, alive and well throughout the year.
A Very Merry Garfield Christmas.......2006-02-21
Despite the fact that the Garfield comic strip seems to be heading in a downward spiral, the majority of the books still remain good, and this compilation is no exception. Printed in full color (even the daily strips) and containing all Christmas comics from 1978 to 2003 (as well as some cute drawings), this is the ultimate holiday collection for Garfield fans. This book is also unusual in that it reveals more of Garfield's soft side than ever before. As he said one Christmas day, "Christmas. It's not the giving. It's not the receiving. It's the loving." Happy Holidays!
Rehash, but good rehash.......2004-07-09
This a great book. However, if you have all the strip compliations already, the only thing new is the 2002 strips for Christmas, and the fact that many of those from the 80's are now in color. Still, it's Garfield, its funny, and its nice to have them all in one book.
Best Christmas Ever!.......2004-05-27
This book was given to me Christmas 2003. I immediately started reading it and declared it was fun having xmas w/Garfield and Odie.

Fantastic!! Should be a children's classic........1999-08-25
I remember reading this book to my much younger brother, he absolutely loved it and would check it out of the library at every opportunity. It is truly a wonderful children's book, and I am amazed that it is out of print. If you get the opportunity to read it, do so! Your children will love it, and so will you.
A very magical spin on the true meaning of Christmas........1998-11-05
I can't believe this book is out-of-print! It has all the right ingredients for a really lovely Christmas story: orphans, a dog, and a wonderful ending. I had to make a decided effort to obtain this book, but my search was well-rewarded. However, my desire to purchase it as a special Christmas gift for three children who love Leon Garfield's other work will not be satisfied...'tis unluckily out-of-print! Very un-fair!

Book Description
In the household of Eleanor Mallet's book, The Notion of Family, resides the power of unconventional mystery. For in these unusual and animated essays, nothing is ever quite what it seems. In the bosom of family, for instance, a bookish boy playing the cello becomes a soccer goalkeeper. The heads-of-household--one a soft touch, the other a hard-liner--unsurp one another's positions. Are dishes merely receptacles, or do they have talismanic power? Such a mystery is a family! The reader plunges into a beguiling drama featuring a constellation of relatives including sons, sisters, and husband; old-world Bobbie; Aunt Izzie of the blueberry pies with crisscross crusts; the mother-in-law, Sarah, who loves Elvis; and Sarah's bookish Arthur, who keeps a bathtub mat by the front door. In this accelerated narrative are the mysteries of growing up, growing old, and growing together. "At one time," Ms. Mallet writes, "I had all the answers." But, she wisely decided, what endures is one's passion for the whole enterprise. Her fast-forward chronicle of the perils or progeny--and related hazards--encompasses the happiness and heartbreak that make up all families. But it does so deftly, so lovingly, and so concisely, it is as if the reader had been given a flawless and heartfelt summary of the wisest family novel ever written. Eleanor Mallet has written a beautiful, funny geographer's guide to the uncharted wilderness that is family. Her rich and glowing collection demonstrates that the besieged notion of family is--at least in this household--as strong and remarkable as ever.
Customer Reviews:
refreshing book about family life.......2004-03-10
I just recently discovered this book and enjoyed it immensely. As my children are teenagers and leaving for college, many of her writings described so well the experiences we have had within our own family. You will enjoy it, and I'm sure you will identify with many of the pages, or will know a friend that will.
A rich and glowing collection. Beautiful. Funny........1999-11-04
In these unusual and animated essays, nothing is ever quite as it seems.Mallet teaches us that families are mysterious and complex organisims, forever moving and changing and growing. The reader plunges into a beguiling drama featuring a constellation of relatives including sons, sisters and husbands; old-world Bobie; Aunt Izzie of the blueberry pies with crisscross crusts; the mother-in-law, Sarah, who loves Elvis; and Sarah's bookish Arthur, who keeps a bathtub mat by the front door. Exquisitely-written and touching family vignettes.......1999-11-01
Mallet gets at the essence of growing up and family life in this lovely little book. Mallet's former Cleveland newspaper columns were among the best Northeastern Ohio has ever seen and I miss them. It's a joy to have this book and get a taste of her sensitive, sometimes humorous and thoughtful writings again. An excellent book to take a break from the "fray" and look at the reality of living to its fullest.

Book Description
ONE WAY or ANOTHER - a travelogue of adventure ( and misadventure) stories
Armed with a healthy skepticism of authority, a wicked sense of humor and a reporter's notebook, Richard Meredith, the world's most (in)famous balding backpacker, goes walkabout on the crazy planet of ours.
Customer Reviews:
Ever dreamed of chucking it all?.......2002-07-02
Who has never fleetingly dreamed of just "chucking it all" and taking off on a nomadic trip around the world?
Richard Meredith, finding himself at a mid-life crossroads, did just that, and shares insightful, often humorous, vignettes of his yearlong adventure in "One Way or Another".
His book is a witty, entertaining hodgepodge of observations, personal anecdotes, historial background and information.
It will surely leave some readers, with their own wanderlust aroused, wondering: Could I? Should I? And if not now, when?
