Book Description

Perched atop the African continent where East meets West, Morocco has been a destination for Europeans and Americans since before the turn of the last century. With its intoxicating mix of Berber, Arab, Spanish, and French Art Deco styles influencing and informing both homes and hotels, this country may be the birthplace of fusion. And as new waves of travelers succumb to Morocco’s charms and make it their home, they have added their own styles to the mix, respecting the roots of Moroccan design, yet altering it in subtle ways.

In New Moroccan Style, author Susan Sully reveals four emerging trends in this world of design: Delirium, Fusion, Minimalism, and Repose. Each represents a different aesthetic—whether it be the clean, elegant lines of Minimalism or the mingling, sinuous Asian and Islamic notes in Fusion—yet all are distinctly Moroccan. In chapters replete with gorgeous photographs by Jean Cazals, Sully takes readers on an unprecedented tour through private homes, stylish resorts, and intimate guest houses—many never before published.

We visit Dar Tamsna, outside Marrakech, the epitome of Moroccan fusion, and a riad, or courtyard dwelling, that is a meditation in gray and white. Orientalism reigns in a villa in a date palm grove and an old stone house outside of Essaouira has been transformed into a sensually rustic retreat. Sully catalogs both traditional crafts and contemporary arts to show readers how to introduce the beauty and spirit of Morocco into their home décor—as Gogo Ferguson has in her Martha’s Vineyard house.

Entertainment is as much a part of the Moroccan experience as the glorious rugs and intricate furnishings. Complementing the various houses are twenty-five recipes and tips for entertaining Moroccan-style, as well as a comprehensive source guide for travelers and shoppers.

A treasure trove of ideas and images, New Moroccan Style is a treat for the eyes, palate, and imagination, brought to light by a fresh new voice in design.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great..........2005-02-15

I confess that I was a bit disappointed by this book. I was hoping for a book about sumptuous Moroccan decorating and living the Moroccan lifestyle. This book really only barely touches on that. The actual focus of the book is concentrated on a few hotels and restaurants located in Morocco but owned mostly by people foreign to Morocco, with the addition of a few homes of wealthy people in the United States who have been somewhat influenced by Moroccan style. This book contains no pictures of the interiors of homes of the average Moroccan citizen at all.

Also, the decorating style advocated in this book is one of an overall Contemporary style with Moroccan influences. In the case of this book, "New" Moroccan Style equals an almost Asian minimalist approach with a few Moroccan handicrafts thrown in. If you're looking for a book with pictures featuring the more well-known "More is better!" Moroccan decorating approach, with layer on top of layer of textile and color, you are bound to be as disappointed as I was. The decorating style featured in this book is very restrained compared to most other books on Moroccan style that I have encountered.

I still give the book four stars overall for content and information. For what the book actually is, it's not a bad book at all. It just isn't exactly what you'd expect it to be, either. The text discussing the origins of Moroccan style, from the Berber influence to Andalusian style, is especially informative. The recipes included in the book, along with pictures, are also a nice bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2004-05-17

This is such a great book! Spare yet sensual interiors, there are ideas for interiors in here that everyone can do. Moroccan interior design is not based on lots of money, or elaborate settings, but rather arranging things you have in unexpected ways - decide what's pleasing to you, and get bold with color!

4 out of 5 stars Really nice book.......2007-07-31

I got this book for my life drawing class and I really like this book. It does not teach anatomy or proportion. It shows the classical way of doing figure drawing and how to do finish rendering. It's more traditional approach and really helpful. I have learned a lot from it.

5 out of 5 stars Good for drawing "live".......2006-07-17

Very usefull, very pleasant to read. I was expecting more explanations about the relationship between anatomy and the human pose, but it's more about how to look at the model to draw it well.

4 out of 5 stars Thank God for an excellent figurative painter!.......2006-03-04

Ryder's book is a delight to leaf through, looking at the excellent life drawings in red earth, done with the same accuracy and passion as the masters of the past.
He gives a very clear account of how to tackle the drawing in phases, until it is finished.
I would have rated the book a solid 5, were it not that in my opinion Ryder spends too little time giving advice on how to measure proportions, which are the basis of a successful life drawing or portrait. He is undoubtedly a masterful draftsman, but the less experienced artist reading his book would expect to be led step by step on such an important aspect of drawing from life.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but..........2005-11-05

The general consensus of the reviews I've read is that this is a fine book, but not for beginners. My take is somewhat different.

First of all, I think this is a fine book for a beginner if she or he is not (unlike most beginners it seems) indignant at the idea of having to have exercise patience and concentration.

Anthony Ryder is a fine draftsman and, to judge from this book, a fine teacher as well. He explains his method quite admirably. How others can think otherwise is a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, he does an excellent job of combining instruction in mechanical technique with broader insights into the process of drawing. While I have never met him, I find he comes across in this book as quite a likeable person.

I do, however, have a reservation. The author seems to have little understanding of, or at least does not convey, the limitations of the method he teaches.

For accurately conveying the appearance of still subjects in controlled lighting, I think this method is without better.

Many subjects, however, cannot be portrayed accurately using this method. You simply cannot make a good drawing of a living deer or chickadee, for instance, using this framework. Nor can you portray human subjects that are impractical for studio sessions, for instance a battle scene with many people (try paying just one model for 8 hours of posing) and in positions that no model can hold for very long or at all. All the work of A.R. that I have seen is either of inanimate objects or of human models in relatively leisurely poses, and his method reflects that.

Nonetheless, learning to draw accurately from still life is an essential skill for those who want to do realistic work, and this book is an excellent foundation. However, if you want to work with subjects other than lounging models and objects on table tops, you will need to go beyond it.

5 out of 5 stars Figure Drawing.......2005-08-12

Mr. Ryder has compiled wonderful book for the figure drawing beginer that includes many types of drawings and drawing media, from pencil to charcoal to pastels. It is extremely well ilustrated with many great tips for the beginers. This is a book that I highly recomend for those just starting to those are already on their way.

                    Book Description

Earth is the cradle of humanity, but one cannot live in the cradle forever, said Russian rocket pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovksy in 1899; his words introduce this lavish and exhilarating vision of the time when man will not merely explore space, but actually live there.

In text, photographs, and nearly 100 dazzling paintings, Leaving the Cradle offers a startling vision of our future in space, from the authors of the Hugo-Award nominee The Grand Tour. The full-color paintings depict the human adventure in the cosmos, with habitats and colonies offering the comforts of home, way stations and solar collectors turning vastness into territory, and robot "astronauts" that allow the journey into the unknown go deeper and deeper.

With special attention to Mars, the Moon, and satellites Ganymede, Callisto, and Enceladus, Leaving the Cradle also features a wealth of supplementary photos, charts, and diagrams.

2 out of 5 stars Good artwork, but really just a children's book.......2002-01-25

"Out of the Cradle" is a great book to buy for children who are interested in space, to get them more excited. However, the artwork in some places is outdated, and there is little but token human presence in any of the pictures. For the purposes that this book serves, I think that the original pictures are far more tantalizing than some watercolor facsimiles.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book to read on space exploration........1999-11-05

This is the finest illustrated book on space exploration I have ever come across. The knowledge of the authors is impeccable, the illustrations are stunning, and the captions are evocative. Though most visuals are "artists' impression" of the scenario, the imagination behind the art is mind-boggling. Whether it is Jupiter as seen from Io, or Saturn looming over mysterious Iapetus, the pictures are truly amazing. A must read for all space buffs.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book about space exploration.......1998-06-27

This is a very beautiful book. Besides well-written text, dozens of full-color paintings fill the pages of this volume. I have never seen our hoped-for future in the solar system portrayed better than here. Buy this book so that you, too, can be inspired by its message and awed by the wonderful artwork.

William Shirer, best known for The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, here presents a fascinating account of the first 25 years of his life. Young childhood in Chicago, growing up in rural Iowa, then being lucky enough to land a newspaper job on a trip to Europe (days before having to head back to Prohibition-time rural America), and then spending his young adulthood in the glorious cities of Europe in the Golden Years, before the shadows of Fascism and Nazism began to dim the lights...(but that leads to the second book of his autobiographical trilogy).

I find this man's accounts of life in the U.S. Midwest, of meeting celebrities and writers and leaders of the thriving, to-be-short-lived Europe of the Twenties (and falling in love as well..don't we all), to be gripping and entertaining. I envy Mr. Shirer's life, too. My favorite autobiography of any I have read, bar none.

                                4 out of 5 stars Powerful Memoir.......1999-12-20

Shirer's moving account of his formative years in Chicago, Cedar Rapids, and as a young reporter in Paris ranks as solid autobiographical writing. I like how this renowned journalist parallels history with a revealing narrative of his youthful yearnings, setbacks, and rebellious insights. Future historians will read this volume to feel the rhythms of everyday life from 1904-1930. Career, personality, and luck exposed young Shirer to many notables, and his portraits of acquaintances like Hemmingway, Sinclair Lewis, Isadora Duncan, and Eamon De Velera add spice to the narrative. Some academic historians jealously dismiss Shirer's best-selling books, but I find his eyewitness accounts illuminating and his prose superior. The first of three volumes, this memoir is more personally revealing than The Nightmare Years, Shirer's superb account of Nazi Germany and A Native's Return, his homecoming finale. Writes Shirer in the introduction, "...it is an interesting fate being an American in the Twentieth Century. I am glad it was mine."

Anyone familiar with William Shirer's spectacular and varied career as an international journalist, war correspondent, radio commentator, and best-selling author of such tomes as "Berlin Diary", "The Rise & fall Of The Third Reich", "The Nightmare Years" and many others will appreciate this interesting and down-to-earth autobiographical effort covering Shirer's formative years. It includes the obligatory starving young newspaper correspondent phase, lived on the run as a poor but socially active and well-fed expatriate dwelling on Paris's famed Left Bank just after WWI in the early 1920s, rubbing shoulders with a young and unknown Ernest Hemingway, interviewing literary maven Gertrude Stein, or chatting with James Joyce.

This is fascinating stuff, a tale heartily told by Shirer, who originally wanted to follow in Hemingway's illustrious footsteps but soon recognized his own talents lay in reporting and non-fiction rather than with creative fiction writing. Soon he was of to India, Pakistan, and China, and by the early 30s had earned a reputation for reporting that eventually led to his assignment for a Chicago paper in Berlin in the mid 1930s. So strategically placed, it was inevitable that a man of his talents and gifts for writing would find himself famously chronically the rise of Hitler and the National Socialists with verve, clarity, and an uncommon gift for recognizing where all this was going. AS the book closes, he is leaving Berlin by express invitation of the nazis, and goes home to write his first tome, "Berlin Diary".

I must confess to being a Shirer addict, having read just about everything he has published. Now that he is finally gone (having died within the last few years), we are left with few of the brilliant cast of WWII alumni like John Toland, William Manchester, Cornelius Ryan, and William Shirer that so often illuminated us with their native intellect, writing skills, and sheer presence. But be of good cheer; they each have left us with a treasure trove of literary gifts we can enjoy at our leisure. Read this and remember.

4 out of 5 stars A journalist's account of his years in Nazi Germany........1999-10-22

It's ridiculous that this book is out of print, especially as it adds so much personal detail to Shirer's best-seller The Rise And Fall Of the Third Reich, and his earlier Berlin Diary. There is a certain amount of overlap, but the picture of daily life for a foreign correspondent in Nazi Germany is extremely vivid - much more so than Shirer's heavily censored despatches, which have just been published as This Is Berlin.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read!.......1998-09-29

This is the classic definitive account of the events leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War and the early years of the war in Germany. The book is exciting, exhilirating and beautifully written, not by someone purely with an interest in the War but by a journalist who was actually there and experienced it all first hand. Shirer was an amazing man. If you never read anything else again - read this book! How could the publishers let it go out of print!

5 out of 5 stars It was so easy to become the author and live the pages ........1998-09-26

Several years ago I picked up THE START, not really expecting education but not necessarily interest or excitement. It was a pleasant surprise to be captivated by the experiences of Mr. Shirer and his interaction with many reknown personalities of the day, Grant Wood, Sincalair Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, and others. At the finish of THE START I rushed out to purchase volume 2, THE NIGHTMARE YEARS, but could only find volume 3, A NATIVE'S RETURN. It was equally as absorbing as volume 1 and included more insight into the personality of the author in addition to a great perspective on the events of the time. A great education on much of the 20th century made easy, interesting, and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a classic........1998-09-22

The Nightmare Years is the best account of the years in Germany leading up to World War II and the Holocaust and the global tragedy of this era. It was written by a superb reporter who lived through the story himself. I find it incredible that the publisher would let this go out of print.

                                      Book Description

In STANIEL CAY, old Nick Finneran finally tells his story of how, as a teenager in post-World War II 1948, he and his cousin Tony leave the cold Massachusetts winters behind to begin a life's journey. Along the way Nick and Tony do a lot of fishing, meet colorful characters from the pre-tourist days of Miami, and discover a wrecked sailboat in the mangroves, which they rebuild and sail to the Bahamas. The teenagers experience the tranquil life in the Caribbean before the tourist boom, but soon uncover a plot that could prove to be the opening salvo of the cold war! The boys are incredulous to find themselves in a life and death struggle for survival.

STANIEL CAY (pronounced "key") is a story of youth, adventure, and mischief, that hasn't been concocted since Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn sailed the Mississippi. The vivid descriptions of small boat sailing are reminiscent of Joshua Slocum and Tristan Jones. The action is interspersed with an expert's detailed description of the endless days of sailing, fishing and "bumming in the islands mon".

This book will take you back to a simpler time, when young boys took to the sea to live the adventures they dreamt. This book will take you back to your youth."

Looking for a great read to help savor those lazy days of summer? Well search no more! Nick Finneran provides a lively tale based upon his recollection of events of his youth. Readers cannot help to recall the optimism and carefree times of their own youth's as they join Nick and Tony on their adventure. While there are times in the book you wish you could prod the author with a disbelieving "your-pulling-my-leg" stare, it only serves as testimony that you are enjoying a great storyteller who can capture your imagination. Nick's storytelling is a credit to his craft, and I look forward to reading more about his adventures in the (hopefully) not so distant future. Ole!

I liked this book very much. Nick's descriptions of life in Miami and in the Bahamas in the 1950s is vivid. As said by previous reviewers, Staniel Cay is mostly a sailing-cruising book ala Joshua Slocum or Bernard Moitessier. But it also has a nice plot that is very much reminiscent of the old Hardy Boys books. I got the shivers when Nick and Tony were sailing across the many cuts in the Exuma island chain. Finneran is a perfect example of how every man is still a little boy inside (sigh).
