A nationally recognized artist,
Wing Young Huie's first critical success was his Frogtown project (Frogtown:Photographs and Conversations in an urban Neighborhood). In 1999 Huie was featured in two major Walker Art exhibitions, and his work has been displayed in exhibits across the country, including New York, Florida, Connecticut, and Chicago. Huie is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Bush Artist Fellowship, the McKnight Photography Fellowship, and the Forecast Exhibition Grant. He is a native of Minnesota.

Wing Young Huie has done a beautiful job of showing the people of Minneapolis to themselves and the world. Much of Lake Street in Minneapolis is regarded as a problem area, ripe for urban redevelopment. But to see it that way is to miss out on a million fascinating details -- the headwrap of a young Somali girl, elderly women giving each other manicures, the eighth grade class of the Montessori middle school. It has people seeking attention and people minding their own business. Elegant churches and sad storefronts. Many of the subjects could easily lend themselves to cliche, but the photographer doesn't let it happen. My only quibble is that the text could be more focused and edited -- but he is a photographer, not primarily a writer. A fun book, for fans of this city or any other.

Fifth collection of drawings.......2005-04-11
Adult black & white collection of drawings.
This is the fifth collection of drawings involving housewives. There are exactly 36 well-drawn detailed drawings of women inside the book. Obviously enough, all the pictures have some connection to mothers and daughters. The pictures range from somewhat tame (I guess the tamest ones involve the mother and daughter being happy about the action) to somewhat extreme (involving bondage in one form or another, humiliation, getting caught in action, whipping). Not all of the women included in the pictures are mothers and daughters, but most are. I could be overlooking someone, but I believe that there are no men in this collection. The action occurs in-doors and outside (like the picture where the mother has chained her daughter outside in the cold for all to partake of the whipped spoiled girl).
Overall, the collection is interesting, and well-drawn. The collection contains pictures of incest, bondage, whipping, and humiliation. Note: some of the collections contain a page that collects the title of the pictures, and this is one of those collections. The page is at the very back of the book and is called the "Table of Contents." Obviously enough, this isn't a collection for just anyone, and probably not the book to be used to enter the Rebecca world.

Ok, my recipe is in this book, but I have never made it from the measurements listed. It would probaly make 40 pounds of noodles anyway. On the lot I just kinda put things togther without measuring (My bus did not have room for measuring cups anyway) But this book is fun!!! Elizabeth wrote this with a lot of love. I would still be out there cooking for everyone if I could. So much love for one lifetime!!! Thanks Jerry!!!

"Cooking With the Dead" is full of fabulous pictures and interviews with Deadheads and some great recipes. I was kind of disappointed that there were recipes for beef kabobs and tuna melts in what I had thought would be a vegetarian cookbook, but I overlooked them. 3 Bean Veggie Chilli is a tasty dish I have enjoyed making. The Gilly Melt is quite tasty, and I am very intrigued by "Wheel-of-Creation-Vegan-Organic-No-Electricity-Sprouted-Wheat-Berry Pizza", I long for a wheat grass grinder. The Energy Nuggets are really great as are the Apple space cakes. Its a fun cookbook, and memoir of a people.

I bought this cookbook while on vacation in the north woods; lots of the recipes were perfect for cooking in the tiny cottage kitchen and on the grill...but I had to wait until I got back to my local organic co-op for a lot of other frequently-used ingredients like tahini, tamari, nori, and rice wine vinegar.
The best part for me is that this is the only cookbook that ever caught my husband's interest and inspired him to do any kind of cooking that didn't involve a box of mac and cheese and the microwave! Since I bought this book he's made three kinds of burritos for dinner!

While I love the Grateful Dead and had many great times in the lots eating and partying, I was a little disappointed in this book. It oversimplifies the variety of people in the lots and the food offered. But, for nostalgia's sake, I have to say that I read it a number of times and got a lttle teary looking at the pictures. If anything, buy it to support a fellow Deadhead and get a few good recipes in the meantime.

I prepare the black bean burrito recipe often, and it's a family favorite. There are many other nice recipes as well. The stories are also interesting, especially when one considers that the GD touring lifestyle is pretty much over.

I have a warm spot in my heart for Don Nix. He always seemed to be one of those just off the radar guys who made things happen. Also his brother Larry was kind enough to give a friend and me feedback on a project we did 20 years ago. That afternoon he told Don Nix stories that left me in the floor-none of which made it to this book.
So when I saw this book last week i had to have it. It is an entertaining story of the early days of the Stax record scene, written lovingly. However Don, if you read this, I'm still waiting for the book about the Stax Christmas parties. I hear it would be a bonafide best seller

I READ THIS BOOK SEVERAL YEARS AGO, IT'S INTERESTING IF YOU ARE FROM THE MEMPHIS AREA. IT MAKES IT EASY TO RELATE TOO. HE SPEAKS OF HIS FAMILY IN THIS BOOK, BUT ONLY HIS SONS. NEVER SPEAKS OF HIS DAUGHTER, WHY? THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENT RECIPES INCLUDED IN THIS BOOK ALSO.

I don't know if there is a connection or not, but after reading this book I cooked up a batch of Little Milton's catfish head soup and went to a bingo parlor, where I promptly won $42.50 and a box of cigars.
