Book Description
A remarkable coincidence of unplanned historical events has preserved Newport, Rhode Island's architectural heritage in a way that is rare among American cities. Newport has the largest number of pre-Revolutionary War buildings in North America, with some 800 in its old historic districts.
In the nineteenth century, Newport was the summer home to America's most prominent families and patrons of outstanding architecture. With a diverse range of styles, Newport exemplified the greatness of mid-nineteenth-century American architecture. As Newport gained social importance in the 1880s, the Bellevue Avenue and Ochre Point neighborhoods became the sites of lavish Beaux-Arts palatial residences.
Newport's twentieth-century architecture explored all modern currents, ranging from progressive Bauhaus functionalism as it evolved into the International Style of the 1950s to more conservative Art Deco and Scandinavian Modernism. After 1975, the postmodern era gave rise to a spirit of preservation and adaptive reuse, inspiring the Modern Traditionalism of architects such as Robert A. M. Stern. In a more vernacular vein, postmodern shopping centers, restaurants, and commercial establishments provided fertile ground for an especially well-informed postmodern kitsch.

This book is wonderfully organized. The description of the styles and the economic environment in which they were hatched is beautifully done. Wonderful photos and illustrations too.

The best one.......2007-09-22
I've bought several books on this argument and i think this one is the best one. It starts from ABC and is rich of usefull tips. It's technical enough to tell you why things happens but not enough to be boring. I love this book. Just a remarque for the next edition: too many pictures are black and white.

Blake begins by discussing the pros and cons of acrylic painting as well as a brief history. The chapters that follow go over the basic tools and several basic techniques ranging from easy to complicated.
It is a very comprehensive guide to arcylic painting, complete with 32 plates in full color and 125 black-and-white illustrations.

feet in nylon, need i say more..........2002-01-25
great book for a leg and foot fan.
Elmer Batters : Legs That Dance to Elmer's Tune.......2002-01-09
Very good. I've always loved Batters work. I only wish the pictures had some documentation. Dates, names, locations, ect. Still, you can't go worng with this book. Does anyone know if any of his VHS tapes are still around?
Girls will like this too!.......2001-07-12
I suppose men will think this book is just for them. But it will also appeal to those of us who like wearing stockings and lingerie. It will give us some ideas of how to do it!
ELEGANTLY SUCCULENT!!!.......1999-05-06
Perhaps you prefer piggies to peaches!? If so, you could not buy a better book!
Profiles the beauty of women in a different way........1997-06-04
I thought this portfolio was put together quite well. The pictures are distinct in their own class. Many would look at this book as a form of pornography, it may have been for it's time. But you have to consider what is printed in todays world. Elmer Batters pictures are pure, honest, and show beautiful women in the way that nudity should be shown
Customer Reviews:
Quality but Tiny!!.......2005-02-19
This book has some great pic's of legs, stockings, and feet, but please please notice the size is SMALL, LITERALLY 3x4 INCHES! If you are looking for a Christmas Tree decoration, this is perfect, but a coffee table book it isn't! Hopefully there are other books out there that exhibit Elmer Batters quality work.
Wonderful photos but *sigh* SIZE does matter..........2002-06-05
If you're into this sort of erotic photography (as I am, having discovered Batters' work in LEG SHOW magazine -- BTW, God is a woman and Her name is Dian Hanson, say it with me, guys...), then getting a book of pure Batters photography is a must. But read the specs on this paperback book carefully! The book is smaller than a deck of cards. In fact, its pages are about the size of the screen of a PalmPilot.
I didn't read the specs very carefully and was hoping for a full-size paperback, not the PostItNote-sized book that I was shipped.
Buyer beware!
That said, it's the only book I know of [other than his CARUSCA SITTINGS similar paperback] that features all Batters' leg/feet photos, and, as I said up front, if you like his work, you know you sort of need to have this. (Who knows, maybe the palm sizing is useful ;-)
If you like toes and hose, this is your book.......1999-12-05
Elmer Batters does not create fancy, elaborate sets for his models, nor are his models particularly good looking. However, he does know how to pose them (not sexually graphic) to get the best angle on their feet and legs, and from that level his work is honest, straightforward, and very well done. If your fetish runs in this direction, this book (and all the Elmer books) are must-haves.

Product Description
This is Marvel Comics Amazing Spider-man, #356 from Late Dec. 1991.
Book Description
In 1984 journalist Peregrine Hodson crossed the Pakistan border into Afghanistan with rebel mujahedin smuggling arms and ammunition, beginning a thousand-mile journey through the war-torn nation. Fluent in Farsi, he was able to observe the war with stunning intimacy and eloquently capture the essence of the Afghan people and their culture. As the travelers survived bombings by Soviet aircraft, an ambush by a rival faction, and becoming swept up in a major offensive, Hodson would come to gain a unique perspective on their hopes for peace and religious devotion. Bringing together travel writing, war reportage, and history, this is a richly rendered portrait of a complex people. "Gripping and moving ... [a] powerful account of a war that has often been described as 'forgotten.'" -- Gail Pool, The Christian Science Monitor "Will long remain the most vivid account of a strange and horrible wrong." -- Ahmed Rashid, The Independent (London) "Vivid and intriguing." -- Jonathan Kirsch, -- Los Angeles Times Book Review

Under a Sickle Moon: A Journey Through Afghanistan .......2007-01-15
If you are looking for a war story then this is not the book.
Provides A Useful Perspective on Islam.......2003-03-26
I agree with the other reviewers.
More important for me was the perspective Hodson gives concering Islamic attitudes and beliefs. That those fighting the Russians often saw Russia and the US as similar is sobering and can help us to better appreciate Islam and its adherents.
As a WASP, personal experience and books like "Under a Sickle Moon" have contributed to my recognizing that the concerns expressed in the Middle East and elsewhere have validity and must be addressed before many thorny issues can be fully resolved.
a refreshing account.......2002-12-23
Hodson succeeds because he avoids the self congratulatory tone of many of this kind of travel narrative. He suffers with acute diarrhea, fever and eventually contracts hepatitis as a result of his arduous trip through the mountainous regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, mostly the latter. This account avoids taking sides and does an excellent job showing what everyday life in the 80's in Afghanistan was like. Interesting how the "common" people often resented the Mujahedin for bringing attacks to their home turf. Sometimes the rebels are treated as heroes, sometimes as villains, but in any case we view all the contradictions, narrow point of view (one group thought Hitler was a great man simply because at one point he fought the "evil" Russians who were at war with their country) and fanatical devotion to the Islamic ideal. Though not as literary as other travelogues, Hodson achieves a gritty, down and dirty tone that serves his narrative well. An excellent read and an impressive journey into a dangerous and complicated land.
A journey through Afghanistan.......2001-10-24
This book is really great. I loved travelling with Peregrine Hodson (figuratively) as he walked the walk through Afghanistan. He describes the people and landscape very poignantly. We see the war with Russia from their eyes. If you want to understand the mindset of typical Afghans, as they fight to defend their country, and struggle to survive a war they don't understand, this book is very helpful.
Stimulating first-hand view of the Afgan-Russian conflict........1998-10-11
As a cousin of the author, I read with interest Peregrine Hodson's first-hand account of his travels through the Afgan hinterland. Reminiscent of "The Great Game", Hodson's accounting of the Afgani resistance leaves one with a keen appreciation of the struggles and hardships they encountered. Well worth the read! Book Description
The Book "I Planted A Seed" has a beginning in the Pan Handle of Oklahoma during depression days. Life was at its worst for Bill Quisenberry and his family. Starvation and other hardships were a threat to them all. Finally, the family moved to Pomona, California. There, in church, he met his wife and eventually they served on two foreign mission fields. Much of that part of the story depicts raising their six children on the island of Okinawa. Since they were Faith Missionaries they learned early how to trust God for their needs.
Customer Reviews:
The "Seed" is now a fruitful tree..........2001-07-01
This book is testimony to a couple who yielded themselves to God for service and who will forever be near and dear to those of us whose life they touched. They planted much more than "a" seed... there are presently more than a thousand "seeds" involved in either full or part time ministry around the world. As one who lived a small part of what is outlined in this book I cannot recommend it highly enough. I pray that it will inspire others to follow in their footsteps and encourage more to become missionaries... rather overseas or right in their schools or workplace.
It Planted a Seed in ME!.......2000-10-31
This book kept me up late! It was hard to put down! I had to remind myself over and over that what I was reading was actually true. What adventure! Many people go through "hard times", but this family showed me how their faith "got them through" those times. I have it so easy in my life, comparatively, I kept asking myself, "Would I have had that much faith?" - Don't think I can answer that, really, I'm not who they are, BUT I now have a "real life" example of "faith in action" that I can remember to encourage me while I'm going through "hard times".[The seed] This book is a story of how God really does hear believers' prayers and answers them and is always watching over us. (I also see one of the authors "walk the talk". She is genuine.) This is a GREAT GIFT for friends and family! Enjoy the exciting stories! P.S. I'm assigning it for homeschool reading material for my 11 and 9 year olds
Real Faith.......2000-09-29
This book is a testament to what real faith in Jesus Christ is all about. It is a real story about real people dealing with real life and how their faith got them through it all. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to read what real faith is all about.
I Planted A Seed.......2000-09-28
This is one of the best and most interesting books I've read in a long time. After I finished it, I passed it along to my family to read and they all loved it as well. If your looking for an inspiring book to read, this is it, order it now.
I Planted a Seed.......2000-08-28
This book is better than it looks. Some of the stories in it are fantastic. It made me wonder about my own faith, and how easy we have it these days.A must read for Christians.
