Customer Reviews:
Fabulous book with fabulous houses and pictures!.......2005-08-20
I saw this book and as soon as I started looking through it I fell in love. This novel chronicles the expansive mansions on Boston's North Shore, with black and white photographs of both the exteriors and interiors. These pictures made me feel like I was part of that life, and helped me understand how people actually decorated those "Maderley" type manor houses. I was shocked to know families actually lived in them, and furnished them so lavishly!
For anyone who is a fan of architecture or old houses, even victorian decorating, check this book out! I love old houses and seeing the way people decorated them, and this HUGE book took me further in than I ever expected. Some of these have blueprints, which helped me figure out the layout of these grand mansions, and how many rooms there really were.
Boston Brilliance.......2005-07-15
This is a beautiful book and a great follow up to the book on Chicago's North Shore. These books are so luxurious and elegant, the craftsmanship is just amazing, I highly recommend both. It is wonderful to explore this well researched and interesting book. The black and white historic pictures are crisp and detailed and the history well researched. Anyone who has any interest in historic estates or just appreciates fine craftsmanship in a book will not be disappointed. I commend the authors and publisher for a job well done.

Book Description
Crystalline glazes have a magical quality that appeals to many ceramicists. Unfortunately, producing these glazes can be technically difficult.
Diane Creber tackles the problems involved in using this challenging medium. She describes the clays and kilns most suitable, explains how to glaze, provides glaze recipes, and discusses how to fire in both oxidation and reduction conditions. She also briefly sketches the history of crystalline glazes.
A useful guide to this exciting subject, Crystalline Glazes is perfect for both the student and the practiced potter experimenting with this technique. The second edition includes a new chapter, profiling the work of 14 potters from around the globe. These artists discuss their approaches, techniques, and recipes for achieving successful crystalline glazes.

good information if you're firing cone 10.......2007-05-31
Almost all of the glaze recipes and firing schedules designed for very high-fire kilns (cone 10 and above). More information on achieving the intended effects at stoneware temperatures (cone 5-7) would have been more useful to me.
Wow! Material is hard to hard on Crystalline Glazes..........2006-01-31
this is the most comprehensive book I've found. It has firing techniques, lots of glaze information and the technical information you need without it being overwhelming.
Diane Creber "Crystalline Glazes".......1999-12-24
This is a well written book dealing with crystalline glazes. If you have tried to find material on crystalline glazes you will realize how scarce it is. I have tried four of her glaze formulas and followed her instruction on firing.
Results: Two terrific glazes, one very nice glaze, and one which remained underdeveloped.

Peter Ilsley has spent alot of time figuring out crystalline glazes, and in his book he explains plainly and simply, the intricacies of this particular artform. Clay bodies, glaze recipes, and firing techniques are closely guarded secrets for lesser artists: this is an honest attempt to pass on valuable information.

From the supplier: Studio potter Jody Scott manufactures all of his porcelain pieces one at a time and favors crystalline glazes because of the intensity and color depth that the technique provides. Scott first sprays, brushes or pours a slurry of about 25% zinc oxide, 25% silica, 50% low alumina 3110, colorant and water on top of the surface of a pot that has already been brisque fired at 1020 degrees centigrade. The pot takes its distinctive colors and shapes as it is fired in an electric kiln, then cooled.

Book Description
These studio visits with some of today’s most popular and innovative comic artists present an unparalleled look at the cutting edge of the comic medium. The artists, some of whom rarely grant interviews, offer insights into the creative process, their influences and personal sources of inspiration, and the history of comics. The interviews amount to private gallery tours, with the artists commenting, now thoughtfully, now passionately, on their own work as well as the works of others.
The book is generously illustrated with full-color reproductions of the artists’ works, including some that have been published and others not originally intended for publication, such as sketchbooks and personal projects. Additional illustrations show behind-the-scenes working processes of the cartoonists and particular works by others that have influenced or inspired them. Through the eyes of these artists, we see with a new clarity the achievement of contemporary cartoonists and the extraordinary possibilities of comic art.
Extensive interviews with: Ivan Brunetti, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Robert Crumb, Jaime Hernandez, Gary Panter, Seth, Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for Crumb, Spiegelman, Ware Fans.......2006-10-05
Since this is my first ever review for Amazon, I am compelled to tell you that Todd Hignite has delivered a powerful statement from the masters of modern comic expression. The Robert Crumb interview alone is worth the price of entry. Crumb digs deep and comes up with some terrific historical perspective plus a treasure of new things you have not read or heard before.
Almost as good are the pages devoted to Spiegelman. You won't be disappointed; I promise.
Additionally, the production values of this book are excellent. "Printed in China" doesn't mean falling apart on cheap paper anymore, apparently.
Kudos to Yale University Press for publishing.

Book Description
A visual smorgasbord from a legendary newspaper and its illustrious illustrators, this oversized book taps into the current craze for graphic novels and vintage comics. Joseph Pulitzers New York World flourished at the turn of the twentieth century, and out of it grew what we think of as the modern daily paper. The World was famous for muckracking and sensationalism, but to a contemporary eye what is most striking about the paper (and in particular the Sunday edition) is that it was filled with colorful artcaricatures, full-page cartoons, disaster drawings, fiction illustrations, hand-lettered typography, weird science, halftone photographs, maps, and more. For The World on Sunday, Baker and coauthor Margaret Brentano have selected 85 of the finest examples of period reporting, bold and playful graphic design, long-lost comic strips, and society pieces from the heyday of The World for reproduction in this delightful oversized volume. Bakers introductory essay argues the significance and beauty of Pulitzers paper, and Brentanos detailed captions and notes accompany the colorful reproductions throughout. The World on Sunday is a visual treasure trove that will appeal to newspaper and history buffs as well as graphic designers, artists, and writers.
Customer Reviews:
A lush example of newspaper history at its finest........2007-01-07
Joseph Pulitzer's New York WORLD flourished at the turn of the 20th century and grew from a modern daily paper to a sensationalist publication packed with striking colorful art, from photos to cartoons and drawings. THE WORLD ON SUNDAY gathers over a hundred of the best from WORLD and places them in an oversized presentation to display their color on single and double-page spreads. A chronological arrangement lends to a fine sequence of reproductions tracing editorial and news highlights of the times, while colorful commentary accompanies the pieces and provides the necessary background for appreciation by all audiences. THE WORLD ON SUNDAY: GRAPHIC ART IN JOSEPH PULITZER'S NEWSPAPER (1898-1911) is a top pick not just for art or newspaper library holdings, but for general-interest collections as well: it captures the art, craft and style of a bygone era and is a lush example of newspaper history at its finest.

Homage to Baker and Brentano.......2006-12-17
As a librarian, I am horrified, but unfortunately not too surprised to learn that few libraries have kept back issues of the newspaper put out by one of the great figures in USA publishing. And that's before I saw how beautiful it is! The idea that not only all this information but all this art was nearly lost is appalling. (I'm glad Duke University took it, but I hope the gift requires them to return it if they decide to throw it out.) I've been on the losing end of these fights, and no, one can't always assume that someone else kept the material.
Meanwhile, enjoy a glorious and gorgeous piece of historic publishing. I had no idea that color printing was so widely used ad so good at such an early time. The pictures often show great artistic skill and witty humor. There are also some fascinating bits of newpaper history.
A fantastic gift to the nation and the world. I can only show my appreciation by buying my own copy.
Old-Timey Magic.......2006-09-26
A treasure of a lost time and a lost art. Aside from the short-life expectancy and lack of modern conveniences like, uh, cars, ATMs, antibiotics, radio, microwave ovens, television, computers, etc., this book makes you wish you lived back then- when science, technology, and journalism were in their infancy and every day held some new, authentic wonder- not just a smaller cell phone. It's also quite amazing to see how advertisements, typefaces, layouts, and prose have radically changed in a century, and not necessarily for the better- unless you're one of those "Form Follows Function" kooks. A must for all you Luddites out there.
Thank you NIcholson and Margaret!!.......2006-01-30
This book celebrates one of the high points in American popular culture. In the late 1800's, Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York World, purchased the first great high quality color printer for newspapers. He then used it to publish beautiful color graphics every Sunday. This is both great art and great entertainment. But the story of how the author Nicholson Baker and his wife, Margaret Brentano, tracked down the last surviving complete collection of this work just before it was to be lost forever is just as thrilling. This is an exquisite book that is the product of great work by great people. Get ready to enjoy a true treasure.
Wow! Mere words cannot do justice to these graphics..........2006-01-25
Amazingly, there almost no collections of Pulitzer's ground-breaking newspaper in existence. At considerable personal expense, authors Baker and Brentano rescued a trove of New York World papers from a library in Britain. Here they reproduce a selection of the Sunday pages, mostly covers. Included are covers by comic artists like Outcault, Herriman, and McManus, but also by "fine" artists like George Luks -- and a fabulous graphic artist named Biedermann, among many others.
Words just cannot do justice to this wonderful volume. The use of color separation here is just incredible, and is something that anyone who loves printmaking or beautiful graphics will treasure. Comics afficianados who love Winsor McCay and Lionel Fenninger will find much to appreciate here, as will those who love Chris Ware. But it is also a great coffee table book with historical interest that everyone will love. Just great.

Beautifully written by the master with wonderful black and white photos to match re Buk's trip to Europe. He gets kicked off a French tv station for drunken behavior and also visits his place of birth: Hamburg, Germany. Who could ask for more? Nice job all around. Love the title.

here, and nowhere else is the edge between life (read madness) (screaming late at night alone in the bathroom about toads and death, until his girlfriend brings him to bed, and not remembering it in the morning) and art this thin. ever. if you are curious about these things hold this up to the light like a black and white negative and regard it carefully.
Bukowski at play in Europe..........1996-05-29
Shakespeare Never Did This is the full account of Bukowski's
literary trip to France and Germany. Michael Montfort
accompanied him and adds some terrific photos.
Full desriptions of interviews, readings and parties are
included in this interesting autobiographical notebook.
Montfort's photos capture the mysterious essence of the poet
as he travels Europe as the "Ugly American". Bukowski comes
close to the same brilliance found in Ham On Rye as he visits
his birthplace in Germany. In a haunting dialog he contrasts
his Uncle's views of his father with the frightening images
from Bukowski's past. Included are about a dozen poems
written during his trip, some of which will interest
any Bukowski fan, and the photos help round out our idea of
the enigmatic writer. While this is not fiction, it is an
honest account of an interesting journey. Bukowski
fluxuates from relative obscurity in France to immense
popularity in Hamburg Germany, where he reads to crowds of
thousands. This book is a must for the Bukowski fans
who wants to see more of what Charles Bukowski was
really like. Both the honesty of Montfort's camera and the
straightforward style of Bukowski's prose help achieve this.
