Book Description
The houses we dwell in, the cities surrounding our houses, even the clothes we wearthese are all shelters we erect against the elements. They are also the embodiment of intuitive rituals, individual and cultural responses to nature's rhythms. Life in the 21st century has separated us from those traditionsnow, Ritual House reawakens us to our lost natural heritage. Celebrated architect Ralph Knowles, Distinguished Emeritus at USC's School of Architecture, has carefully crafted a book for architects, designers, plannersanyone who yearns to reconnect to the natural world through the built environment. He shows us how to re-examine a shadow, a wall, a window, a landscape, as they respond to the natural cycles of heat, light, wind, and rain. Analyzing methods of sheltering that range from a Berber tent to a Spanish courtyard to the cityscape of contemporary Los Angeles, Knowles shows us the future: by coining the concept of solar access zoning, he introduces a radical
yet increasingly viable solution for tomorrow's mega-cities. Understanding how the elements affect our lives is more vital than ever. High-energy enclosed building systems have cut us off from nature, but we can re-connect to our landscapes and to humanity through buildings that honor ecological balance, personal choice, and creativity. By engaging nature in our designs, we can create shelters that are unique to their climate, their region, and their relationship to the sun. Ritual House will take its rightful place among those classic works that become touchstones for the culture.

more than green by design.......2007-03-11
Ralph Knowles book has been a great help to my husband and me, as we plan a home for our empty nest. We are nearly 80 years old and wanting a house that is environmentally responsible. We also are deeply interested in integrating our lives, mentally-spiritually-physically-emotionally. A good home in rhythm with the world we live in has become a real focus, thanks to this book. We read it to each other in the early morning and become more awake and aware because of the ideas in Ritual House. So, we are including nature and the rituals we treasure in our house design. Thanks for a book with ideas and depth of soul.

Architecture that Interacts with People .......2006-08-15
This book is an uplifting invitation to explore architecture's 4th dimension. The rituals described here are those associated with the sun, and the seasons that result from earth's rotation around it. From migrating Paiute Indians within the Owens Valley to the seasonal changes in the nave of cathedrals [and diurnal changes in the transept] this book illustrates how users of buildings celebrate change over time. With so many detailed examples, the designer is invited to create settings where nature can inspire people to use their buildings and outdoor spaces in ways that enrich daily life. The invitation is made even more appealing by the many sketches that capture the essence of each topic.
In separate chapters on migration, transformation, and metabolism, the focus is on people: their movement of within buildings, their manipulation of building elements, and the extent of their awareness of fuel consumption. While there is well-deserved criticism of modern buildings' exclusion of nature, there is far more to excite designers to find ways to help nature to lure our buildings' occupants into patterns of self-expression and acts of creativity.
An eclectic and innovative introduction and study of urban planning and architectural design .......2006-05-04
Ritual House: Drawing On Nature's Rhythms For Architecture And Urban Design is an eclectic and innovative introduction and study of urban planning and architectural design drawing upon the years of experience and expertise of academician, researcher, architectural policy and design consultant Ralph Knowles. Ritual House is presented to the reader in a easy and engaging manner, with Professor Knowles depicting several particular housing developments and major historical projects, including their architectural significance and architectural design. Ritual House is very strongly recommended to students of Architectural Studies and Urban Development interested in the process of architectural design, students of architecture, as well as the non-specialist general reader wanting a better understanding of the esthetic and mechanical particulars of architecture.
Required reading.......2006-03-02
This book should be required reading for anyone interested in architecture and the urban environment. This thought-provoking work is the result of more than 40 years of careful university research by one of the most important figures in solar access design.
Rhythms, Rituals and the Quality of Life.......2006-02-25
RITUAL HOUSE is the latest book by Professor Ralph Knowles of the University of Southern California. Based on more than 40 years of research, the book describes how so much of the modern built environment has missed opportunities to reinforce powerful connections that people have with nature. Prof. Knowles provides examples of how designers and planners can and do improve the quality of peoples' lives by making direct connections to between the rhythms of nature and the rituals of human life. He talks about the importance of access to sunlight and natural ventilation in buildings, and provides specific design strategies to help . Ralph Knowles is internationally recognized for his important contributions to research in solar access and natural forces in architecture. Every architecture student knows of his work, and now he has written a book that the rest of us can understand. The text is easy to follow and does not require a degree in architecture. If you don't know if it is raining or sunny outside right now, you need this book. Think about how important this is the next time you are in your office breathing recycled air while you don't have any idea what the weather is like it is because you don't have a window and can't see the sun.
Read this book. You'll feel better. You might even be able to make small adjustments to adapt your own home or apartment to improve your quality of life. If you are planning to build, give this book to your architect.

Good Paintings, but Little Instruction.......2006-08-01
The book has excellent paintings throughout; however, this is an instruction book and it fails in telling or showing the reader how to develop the painting in pastels. The first few steps are the foundation of any painting and in this area the book is inadequate. Their is some instruction in this area, but not enough.
The author also fails to show alternative ways to achieve the results desired. I like art instruction books that show more than one way to get to certain results but few do this. It is important, especially in books that are introductory in nature, to show more than one way to get to a result. Most art books fail to do this and this book is not an exception.
Pastels Made Easy.......2006-07-01
All a person needs to get started and keep going. The demonstrations and directions when done her recommended way create a sense of accomplishment and curiousity to try the next hurdle.
If your looking for a Pastel book, This is the one........2005-11-08
In my travels between EU, USA and Argentina I have been looking for a book that would provide me with the basic pastel information, and this is the one. I have looked everywere and reviewed other books before I purchased. Anne Heywood has a great way of putting things in a way that help you imagine and understand and this is something that a lot of books lacked. I have read the review on Amazon.com noting that her book needs "step by step on how to", I would agree if this was a book that was meant to be a Basic Pastel learning with step by step, but it is not. I am hoping to find a step by step Pastel book from Anne Heywood, if anyone is aware of one by this artist, please post it, as in my office 5 personal (including myself) have purchased this book and would like to read and learn from her being she has a way of making you understand, not many people have this talent. I was on Amazon looking for Anne Heywood step by step, but as of today, nothing yet.
Extremely Basic.......2005-04-05
The art work in this book is beautiful; she is a talented artist. She gives some good ideas however her book is too basic there are not any real step-by-step projects to put to practice what you learn in the book. I am looking for a book that give basic explantion and projects to work on.

Customer Reviews:
good teaching tool, butý.......2000-08-08
Mr. Cartwright's book is a excellent teaching text for high school or college students studying video and multimedia production. It does a great job of taking the beginner through all of the steps needed to ensure a successful production.
However, one can't help overlook that a text written four years ago on this subject is LONG overdue for a new edition.
Many software applications that are referred to as "soon to be released" are now in their 3rd or 4th version. Likewise, the hardware section of the book is terribly behind the times, as their is virtually no mention of digital video cameras, digital capture cards, current generation non-linear editing systems, or DVD.
Also disappointing was the 3.5" disc that's included, which contains all of the forms in the book. The disc is specially formatted so that it cannot be read on a Macintosh-which CAN read any commonly formatted PC diskette! Instead the publisher encourages Mac users to send in the PC disk and receive a Mac disk at no charge. Why not just use the standard 1.4mb formatting for a PC disk and let users of either platform access the material? Or better yet, just put the forms on a hybrid CD-ROM. This is especially irksome to Mac devotees, when practically all of the computers pictured in the book doing video editing are Macs!
Yet, despite its need for a new edition to address the latest and greatest in hardware and software, and its platform specific floppy, Pre-Production and Planning for Video, Film and Multimedia will serve as a valuable resource for those new to the pre and post production arena, as much of the planning and organizational approaches in the text never go out of style!

A sweet, but somewhat unsatisfying saga.......2004-10-01
Linda Medley's, "Castle Waiting," is a sweet and gentle comic book series that manages to blend the genres of fantasy and fairy-tale quite effectively in entertaining fashion. In Volume #1, The Lucky Road, readers are introduced to the series' protagonist, Jain, as she looks to escape her past and start anew in a castle populated with whimsical characters both human and animal alike. While Medley's black and white art does little in the way of stylistic expression, it is perfectly suited to convey her simple and somewhat predictable storyline. On the whole, this series doesn't contain much 'wow' factor by way of story or art but nevertheless the charming characters and sugary storyline lends itself to an entertaining afternoons worth of reading.
The Lucky Reader.......2003-01-30
CASTLE WAITING was one of those books that I always looked at suspiciously. Try as I might, it seemed like one of those well-meaning independent comics that was a labor of love that would be so embedded in fantasy traditions, or so hellbent on smashing those traditions, that, in my mind, I granted the books the appeal of cod liver oil.
Instead, CASTLE WAITING is quiet. Linda Medley's linework is a touch too well-defined for my tastes, but it suits her characters and setting. Here, she creates a fantasy world that brings to life the types of characters that populate fairy tales and gives them comfortable personalities, warmth, and time to develop. The residents of the castle are much like the supportive but easygoing neighbors we see in contemporary stories in other media.
Though Medley creates some conflicts and a degree of pending menace, this volume's greatest fault may be it's relative lack of dramatic tension. Comic book readers used to rapidly propelled stories may find themselves having to adjust to the more relaxed pace. That is really just your cue to sit back and enjoy the details.
Excellent Collection of a Great Comic.......2003-01-02
I always enjoy this series whenever it comes to my local comic shop. It is an excellent fantasy story that has very memorable characters that are truly likable and you connect with quickly. The issues collected in this volume are just the beginning of what feels like an epic story. You will be right on your way to becoming hooked if you purchase this book since it collects the first eight issues of the series. And it establishes the setting well and leaves you wanting more when you get to the last chapter.... Linda Medley publishes "Castle Waiting" through her own company Olio, and every new issue that sells I'm sure will help her keep publishing.
One of the best that snuck under the radar.......2001-12-18
Go buy "Castle Waiting". Now. Whatever you can get your hands on, however many copies you can find. This is one of those amazing books that you just don't come across often enough.
Linda Medley's artwork is charming. Her stories are delightful. I don't think I can recommend this book *enough* to anyone who loves faery tales, graphic novels, comics in general, or just good stories and good art. I keep going back to re-read this one, and it's spent more time lent out to friends than sitting at home on my bookshelf.
Her characters are a treat. Her women are real: not glamorous, not perfect, not stereotyped, but portrayed like - *gasp!* - actual humans (a stunner in a graphic novel)! More wonderful than that, she has real male characters at the same time - there's no reverse-stereotyping going on, making for a full, well-rounded cast of characters that's remarkably true to life (no small feat in the fantasy genre). Issues like domestic abuse and loss are addressed, but not in obvious or preachy ways, and VERY positive male characters stand in direct contrast to the off-screen baddies that you never see in "The Lucky Road".
Her characters are just marvelous and memorable. I can't stress this enough. The book is sweet without being cloying, and just very, VERY clever.
I think it's appropriate for older children as well as wonderful for adults. This one goes on my holiday list for any moms with a sense of wonder, grownups who like fantasy and/or comix, and mature kids who like some substance to their stories. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.
Charm, Style, and Humor. And you thought comics were dead!.......2001-03-03
At first glance, CW appears to be a warmly illustrated children's comic. After awhile, however, parents and older siblings will realize that the book finds its most appreciate audience in themselves. (Subtle adult jokes sneak in between the all-ages appeal.)
With a delightful fairytale veneer (and a pleasantly researched medieval backdrop), quirky and endearing characters, and the promise of many unfolding storylines to come, it's no surprise that Castle Waiting is a rising star in the industry.
Linda Medley's narrative wit and lovely artistic style (not to mention Todd Klein's typically excellent lettering) make this entire book a pure delight. Here's hoping the word gets out about this wonderful effort.
Book Description
Henry Villard was one of the most remarkable and important figures to shape the tumultuous history of nineteenth -century America. A preeminent Civil War journalist, an industrialist, and a financial maverick, his courage, perseverance, and farsightedness made him the equal of such titans of his day as J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie.
Penniless and not speaking a word of English, Villard emigrated in 1853 from Germany at the age of eighteen, leaving behind the privileges and expectations of his affluent, stifling parentage. Within five years of arriving on American soil, he had mastered the language and was covering the events of the day for the nation's top newspapers. Villard reported firsthand on the Lincoln-Douglas debates and later, from the front lines of the Civil War, filed graphic, hard-hitting reports that earned him the admiration of the newspaper community. His circle of acquaintances included President Lincoln, General Grant, and the famed abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison, whose daughter he married.
When the Civil War ended, Villard's penchant for risk-taking and adventure and his uncanny business acumen led him to become a restless innovator, breaking new ground in many areas. In journalism, he launched the first news syndicate in the United States; in the world of finance, he was a pioneer of venture capitalism and one of the first to employ the leveraged buyout. He catapulted himself into presidency of the Northern Pacific Railroad and shared with Thomas Edison the vision of an electrified nation. His investment in Edison's electrical enterprises eventually paved the way for Villard to mastermind the consolidation of what is now known as the General Electric Company. In 1883, triumphantly driving the last spike himself, he completed the nation's second transcontinental railroad. Later that year a financial panic nearly ruined him, but within a few years he made a phenomenal comeback based on his faith in Edison and the future of electricity. Throughout his life, Villard's unfailing ability to impart his convictions to others, his talent for meeting the right people and gaining their confidence, enabled him to conquer adversity.
Drawing on unpublished letters, Henry Villard's German and English memoirs, and many other sources, Alexandra Villard de Borchgrave's and John Cullen's fast-paced, absorbing biography vividly re-creates Villard's times and tells the rags-to-riches story of a German immigrant who made major contributions to his adopted homeland.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable book about a remarkable figure.......2007-01-22
This biography by A.Villard De Borchgrave, Henry Villard's great granddaughter, and the knowledgable man of letters, John Cullen, is an admirable book and much more than a biograpy. It follows the life of Heinrich Hilgard resp. Henry Villard in all its ups and downs, its great asset however is the comprehensive representation of Villard's worlds. The Palatine history after the failed revolution of 1848, Bismarck and German history before and after unification, the German-Americans in Civil War America, the rise of American journalism, the immensely detailed history of the Civil War with close-ups of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Garrison and of course the history of transcontinental railroads.
The book is well written, clearly structured and contains a fine selection of photos graphically documenting Villard's life. I was most impressed by the close scrutiny of young Henry's seemingly unending struggle to survive in his first few immigrant years. He retained his optimism even after hard blows, he stuck to a life in style inspite of his spare means , his determination to succeed to prove his critical and somewhat narrow-minded father wrong - these character traits mainly make him an "American Titan". The "wanderer between two worlds" finally turned out to be a true American when he freely extended his generosity to manifold causes, especially in his home towns in the Bavarian Palatinate where his philanthropism is still very well known. In Speyer ( and not in Zweibrücken!- p. 344) he helped found a hospital with a nursing school whose huge buildings you will today find in "Hilgard-Straße" not far from his birthplace and the fine and ancient cathedral. Hilgard/Villard surely loved this imposing building, but as a catholic place of worship it could hardly have been the place of his protestant confirmation(p.11). While the book dutifully covers Villard's contacts with the most influential German-American at that time,Carl Schurz, it is a pity that it does not refer to the Palatine Thomas Nast, the Father of American Caricature and creator of Father Christmas.
A 19th Century Forrest Gump.......2002-12-30
This book delivers on two levels. First, it is a well told journey through 19th Century American history. Henry Villard personally witnessed many of the transformational events of that time: the Colorado gold rush; the 1860 Republican Convention; Lincoln's journey from Springfield to Washington for his inauguration; the Civil War Battles of Bun Run, Shiloh, Corinth, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Cold Harbor and Petersburg; the completion of the second transcontinental railroad; and the clashes of the industrial barons of the Gilded Age. This book takes you briskly through those events with Villard as the central figure. The story is that of a 19th Century Forrest Gump.
On another level, the book describes the rags to riches personal journey of this extraordinary man. Indeed, Villard's own life is a quintessential American story: a penniless immigrant becomes a star journalist and acquaintance of legendary generals and a president. After the war, he metamorphoses into an industrial titan and rival of Morgan and Gould, before suffering substantial financial setbacks and then revived fortunes that permit him to regain his place at the pinnacle of American Society.
The book is a very enjoyable read that describes important events in American history and the story of a man who played a significant, if largely forgotten, role in those events. It deserves more attention and a wider readership.
Empathic history of grand-visioned man.......2001-12-22
This well-written biography gives a very empathic account of Villard and his contemporaries. Characters' weaknesses are described as forthrightly as their strengths.
The account covers more than Villard's participation in the financial world. It also tells of his experiences as a poor immigrant. Most vivid are the chapters that describe Villard's career as a Civil War correspondent, a 'special' to coin a period term.
Reading this book was enjoyable both because of the story, and the way it was told. The writing style is sometimes poetic, sometimes cheeky, but always concise.
I would highly recommend this book to those interested in the Civil War, or in war journalism. The chapters dealing with Gilded Age industrialism were more biographic than historically comprehensive. For a better historic account, I'd recommend "Titan : The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr" by Ron Chernow.

railroad titan.......2001-05-05
This book is throughly researched by Harry Villard's great grand daughter. Despite the relationship the author looks at the pros and conns of the man.
This book is able to appeal to many interests. It is the story of a very young man, new to America who eventually makes it to the very top of society. It is a lso a story about the politics and battles during the Civil War; and it is a story of the Guilded Age and the railroad wars.
All this history centers on the life of Henry Villard, German born, young immigrant, newspaper reporter, and fiinally tycoon. A fascinating read with lots of history.

A much needed comfort & inspiration.......2007-09-14
I bought this for my sister who relocated to Kansas and is having a tough time in her life; She is one who doesn't like books and never picks up a book; however she LOVES this book! the short stories filled with courage, love and inspiration help her get through this chapter in her life.
Helpful and supportive.......2007-01-21
A reminder that others have made their way, and we can too.
Puts life in perspective.......2006-03-31
My friend gave me this book a few years ago, when I was going through a rough time.
I give it 4 stars, because it is not as great as previous Chicken Soup books. But the stories are still very inspiring.
Each story is more emotional & moving than the next. Lots of tears were shed, as I read these stories. It makes you realize that your problems aren't so bad & there are a lot of people who have it worse off than you. You must keep a positive attitude & remember that 'life goes on.'
If you are looking to put your problems into perspective & see the big picture, then this book is for you.
tough times.......2004-03-24
i found that when reading a few of the stories i felt greatly moved, more books like Chicken soup should be written as i feel deeply emotional especially as something unforgettable happened to me recently that has made me look at life completely differently.
Above most servings, but still far below the first one.......2003-10-05
Perhaps the words "for the Unsinkable Soul" had misled me to over expect, I was quite disappointed. The stories are relatively plain and uninteresting. It's a complete stereotype of the first three servings, but with much less glamour and appeal.
In case you are still very satisfied with the third serving, which I believe only people who had completed the first three servings would look for a book like this, go for it. If you had already been tired of the third one after the first two, this book is not for you.

Everybody's Dream.......2001-09-29
The Unsinkable Spirit is truly the book about the dream we've all had at one time or another in our lives. It's amazing that Boris and Shirley sold everything at 24 years old and bought a boat. Even more amazing is that Boris, a native of Croatia, bought books and taught himself to use a sextant - and had only one day of sailing lessons before embarking on this awesome journey!
The Unsinkable Spirit takes readers along on a journalistic journey as the Kings learned to navigate around the world. Boris and Shirley are excellent narrators and readers will be held spellbound as they read about encounters with cannibals, sharks and a face-to-face battle with a large eel!
Through it all, the love Boris and Shirley have for their families - and their dreams - comes shining through.
I've never read a book like this. I honestly couldn't put it down! I can't wait for the next episode! Don't just take may word for it. Read the first chapter for yourself at wwww.theunsinkablespirit.com. Only then will you begin to understand how this couple fought valiantly to make their dream a reality. You'll want to stand up and cheer at their triumphs and cry at their tragedies. Through it all, the spirit of living one's dream will challenge even the most insecure reader.
Shirley says it this way: "It doesn't take an extraordinary person to do extraordinary things."
This book is a keeper. You'll want extra copies for your friends!
Could not put it down........2000-12-05
WOW. This book was a real great read. If anyone out there has ever dreamed of sailing the south pacific, this is the book to read. A real treat.
