Book Description
Santiago Calatrava established his reputation as the preeminent engineer of our time with a stunning series of bridges designed for cities around the globe. Renowned for being a universal designer, devoting equal time to architecture, engineering, and sculpture, Calatrava has been a singular force in reviving an excitement for construction technology and ambitious architecture projects. This authoritative monograph on Calatrava's designs for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens is a splendidly illustrated presentation of the architect's celebrated stadium as well as the various plazas and ceremonial spaces created for the event.

good follow up to "Santiago Calatrava: Complete Works".......2006-10-25
i recommend getting "Santiago Calatrava: Complete Works" first...(by same author) pretty sure that's what most of people would do.
this book is somewhat expensive ($35), but my adoration for santiago calatrava led me to get this book. this book has some of santiago's paintings, and some greek buildings, sculptures... which i think are just there to fill up pages.
i should rate this item with 3 stars. but since i like santiago calatrava's work, i rate this 4 stars.

Shop Savvy.......2004-01-02
I was indeed fortunate to obtain a copy of Shop Savvy about twelve years ago and it has been one of my favorite books for years. I keep it at the head of our bed and have spent countless hours reading all the really neat shop tips Roy has compiled. Though it was written in the 80s, the information in this book is timeless and completely useful in today's world. This book is a must for the home workshop and will remain extremely valueable and useful for many years to come. I have enjoyed the book so much I even called the author to tell him how much I have enjoyed his book over the years. He is in his 80s now and will not be blessing us with a follow on. I have managed to make some of the tools he recommends and have been able to purchase some of the tools pictured. I have also applied many of his tips in everyday activities over the years and have never found anything he recommended to fail to work following the descriptions.
The photographs are very good and the written descriptions are outstanding. Without this book to explain the usefulness of the tools/techniques he explains I would have passed them by without ever realizing what I was missing.
If there was ever a book that was the ideal gift for the woodworker, metalworker, home repair specialist, or future engineer/technician this is it. I would recommend this book for all ages and skill levels. If I were a shop teacher at a school I would have this book available to all the students as a reference work.
I think so much of this book I refuse to loan it to anyone as I feel it will not return to my possession. I feel that anyone that likes to work with his hands and purchases this book will never regret the expense. I count it as an investment that has paid off handsomely with the knowledge he imparts.
Every home workshop person should have this book!!!.......2002-05-15
This book is just plain neat! I acquired the book about a year and a half ago and I have used many of the techniques detailed in the book since that time. On more than one occasion, I have just sat reading about many of Mr. Moungovan's projects and admiring his accumulated knowledge and skill.
For a woodworker to get a view into the world of the metal worker, and vice versa, IS EXTREMELY USEFUL AND PRACTICAL -- especially in this day of one-size-fits-all Home Depot's and the like. What do I mean by that? Most of us had to spend many years in the company of serious practitioners to have the kind of skills and techniques - at-the-ready - like those detailed in Mr. Moungovan's book. I am a woodworker who has a bench metal lathe, but not until I acquired this book did I realize the full utility of this piece of equipment! I use an oxyacetylene torch now. The book conveys a definite confidence about home workshop problem solving. I'm still primarily a woodworker, but now I have so many more approaches, materials, and techniques available to me. This book is unique. It will get you over the hump and help you maintain a real and genuinely useful home workshop.
Seriously, here we have a guy -- Roy Moungovan -- who has been there and done it! Hats off to Mr. Moungovan and I really respect what he has accomplished here.
Book Description
Since its original publication in 1982, Remington and Russell has become an essential introduction to the work of these artists, and this revision substantially enhances the book's strengths. Every painting in the Sid Richardson Collection has been rephotographed for this edition, including one Russell and five Remington paintings not included previously. Numerous black-and-white illustrations have also been added to give insight into the evolution of the paintings. Brian Dippie has considerably amplified his commentaries on each painting with new information. His revised introduction places Remington and Russell in the historical and cultural contexts of their time and draws intriguing comparisons between the two artists.

Many Frightmares later, "little Jeffy" is now Bil Keane's assistant. Asked what was the worst dream he ever had, Jeff said: "I dreamt I picked up the morning paper and "The Family Circus" wasn't in it."
Rest assured, Jeff. It won't happen.
The Family Circus now appears worldwide in more than 1300 newspapers!
Customer Reviews:
Never fear! The Family Circus is here!! ^_^.......2003-05-31
Bil Keane delivers to us a wonderfully created comic story, of the fabulously famous: Family Circus! He delights us with hilarious lines ("Read faster, Mommy, I can't stay awake much longer.") that remind us of when we were children.
The drawings are fairly well done, and it's one of those books you can just finish in one sitting. A funny line is: "This is my favorite pie, Mommy! What kind is it?"
It just goes to prove that we all have a little bit of kiddishness inside of us (Don't be silly, Dolly. They're freckles, not age spots."). It's a fun read, and if you don't like it, it certainly won't waste too much of your time if you're an avid reader, seeing as how it's only roughly around 50 pages (there are no page numbers).
So, enjoy! ("No, Grandma is ON Social Security, she's not a security guard.")
Not a bad effort, Keane.......1999-06-14
The Keane-ster dazzles us again with his light-hearted depictions of weekend life in an American family. My family and I get many laughs from this! Each cartoon is well drawn, and the puns are hilarious. Keane really creates a positive, happy feeling. It would be great if Keane brought back Not Me and Ida Know for the next book!
I was so impressed, but luckily no frightmare after reading!.......1999-04-18
God bless you, Bil Keane, for keeping something wholesome in our newspapers. Oh, the joys of the Family Circus! From Billy's library trips, to Jeffy's "frightmare" to Dolly's dollhouse, to P.J.s weeping, to Daddy being the wonderful Dad he is, I really liked the way Keane deals with the American family. Who says that all is bad and corrupt with art today? This is so refreshing!
A candid endeavour.......1999-04-18
I was really pleased by Keane's output this time around. He keeps his illustrations and subject matter simple, and are never off-colour. Thusly, the whole family is able to appreciate his works. The Family Circus is a great source of amusement for me, and it is also some thing that I am able to share with my children. We enjoy many laughs together over it.
Bill Keane does it again!.......1999-04-16
This man is so prolific! Hes been drawing the family Circus for decades now! This reminds me so much of what American life is all about, each cartoon does. Those ghosts are so funny, and so are the little children's malapropisms. Bill Keane does poignantly capture the American family's essence.

"WHAT ABOUT WHAT THEY DID TO MY FATHER?...
THE JAPS KILLED HIM!"
Adam Pelko witnessed something horrible: the sinking of the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor -- with his father aboard. Since then, Adam and his mother and sister have moved to California, where they are trying to rebuild their lives.
But no matter where Adam goes, he can't get away from the effects of the war. His best friend, Davi, has asked for help. Davi is Japanese American, and his father has been arrested, taken to Manzanar, a Japanese internment camp.
Adam isn't sure what to do. If he goes to Manzanar and starts asking questions, he could be risking his own life. But can he simply do nothing and risk losing Davi's friendship forever? Are Davi, his father, and all the other Japanese Americans taken from their homes responsible for what happened at Pearl Harbor?
In this riveting follow-up to his acclaimed book A Boy at War, Harry Mazer explores questions of friendship and loyalty against the backdrop of World War II, a time when boys had to grow up fast.

A Boy No More.......2007-03-08
A Boy No More is a great book. I would recomend this book to any one who needs to read a historical fiction book. A Boy At War is the first book in this series. It is about a boy named Adam who father was killed during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Later in the book he goes to visit his Japenese friend father in a prison camp. Just because he looks Japanese he was sent to a way. When Adam comes back home his mom is angry because he did not tell her where he was going and he went to the camp called Manzanar and he was gone for a while. So she does not speak to him for a while Adam wants to go to his grandfathers because he wants to sign up for the marines. His mom won't sign for him to get into the marines. So he's going to go down to his grandfathers and ask. Will his grandfather say yes for him to come down? I will have to read the rest of the series to find out.
A Boy No More.......2007-01-10
I bought this book for a gift for my 11-year-old nephew. He wrote me when he had finished it - he loved it!
A Boy No More.......2006-12-15
The reason why I rated this book a two is because it jumps from day to day so fast. I couldn't tell where I was. Another reason is the main character was not believeable. He would do things that teenagers wouldn't do. He went on a train for two days. I thought that it was going to have a little action, but it was nothing like the first book. The first book had Pearl Harbor in it. I thought the second have another important battle/event of World War II. Over all this book stinks, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
My Son Loved This Book!!!.......2006-11-10
I have bought all 3 of the books in this series for my 10 yr old son...and he has loved them all.....I'm sorry there aren't more lol...So this year for Christmas I am buying any other books written by Harry Mazer...Just this week we cleaned out my sons closets and packed away things he no longer uses or plays with...and he said he wanted to keep this series of books so when he has a son, his son can read them...when a 10 yr old is planning to save a book for that lenght of time then the book made an impression....
Reprinted from the Aug 2006 "The Historical Novels Review".......2006-08-26
In this sequel to "A Boy at War", author Harry Mazer picks up the story of young Adam Pelko after the attack on Pearl Harbor, where he witnessed his father's death on the USS Arizona. Now evacuated to San Diego with his mother and sister, Adam is faced with the task of rebuilding his life. However, the effects of the new war follow him in many ways, most of all in the form of a letter from his best friend in Hawaii, Davi Mori. Davi's father has been arrested and he needs Adam's help. This letter launches him on a mission to get word to Davi's uncle in Fresno. On the subsequent journey Adam not only is forced into conflict with his mother, but learns first hand of the nation's new fear and hatred of the Japanese. When he finally reaches the uncle, Adam finds his friend and his entire family have been relocated to the forbidding internment camp at Manzanar.
The author does a masterful job of blending the issues of a boy becoming a young man with the larger reality of the nation's treatment of its citizens of Japanese descent. Mr. Mazer was inspired by the tragedies of September 11, and he wished to have his readers recognize "the parallels and perils" of the prejudice and guilt by association mentality that gripped the nation after Pearl Harbor. I believe he has succeeded in this, telling a story that is at once historical and deeply human. He also includes several pages of factual background, an excellent addition for young readers who are probably not familiar with this period of history
Having visited an internment camp similar to Manzanar, I find the author's descriptions to be accurate. The thoughts and actions of Adam Pelko also ring true. This is a wonderful book, well suited to its intended audience of ages 10 to 14.
Book Description
Lost Boy No More tells the incredible true story of Abraham Nhialbut the story is not his alone.
As a nine year-old child, Abraham found himself orphaned as civil war in his homeland of Sudan ravaged his entire village because they refused to embrace Islam. His journey is one of a perilous walk along with 35,000 lost boys of Sudan who fled to Ethiopia. Abraham and others like him made it to the border but hard times were not over as he endured the refugee camps of Ethiopia. Abraham becomes a lost boy no more when he discovers real salvation through Jesus Christ. Lost Boy No More gives more than a narrative of Abraham's story. It also gives a history of Sudan and the persecution of Christians by Islamic militants.

Lost book.......2005-07-19
I couldn't read this book. I skimmed it, but I couldn't read it. It was disjointed and disappointing. I don't think it adequately portrayed the situation. Also, I don't mind reading religious material, but I like to know it's religious material before I buy it.
A story of hope.......2005-02-05
So begins the story of the Lost Boys, children, some much younger than Abraham, who fled from the horror of those who butchered their families into the desert. They fled without adequate food, water and clothes. They fled, pursued by soldiers who found pleasure in torture. Yet, despite the hardships, many not only survive, but found their faith sustained them.

An Emotional Read.......2005-02-02
Lost Boy No More will touch your heart and set your soul on fire! I cried as I read this emotional journey and the tribulations these boys went through. My heart cried out to them. Powerful and insightful, this is a must-read. For more of my reviews, visit my website at www.robinmillerbooks.com
The Real Thing.......2005-02-02
It is one thing to read about the atrocities in the Sudan in the daily newspaper. It is quite another to hear first-hand the stories of real people who witnessed and experienced unspeakable crimes against humanity. I was shaken to the core by this book. It is one that everyone should read, especially those of us who will never travel to the Sudan in person. It challenges us to pray, to write to our government for assistance for these people, and to give from our own wealth to help in whatever way is possible.
What an eye-opening book!.......2005-01-18
This book draws attention to unimaginable atrocities in Sudan. Thirty-five thousand boys, caught in the crossfire of a religious and civil war, are stripped of their families, homes, and food sources. These orphaned boys join together to trek across Africa to refugee camps, and thousands die during their journey. However, by relying on each other and God, many boys rise above the violence they have witnessed. They vow to get an education and somehow make a difference in their native land.
This is a book that everyone should read. The Sudanese genocide represents an era in recent world history that the media has overlooked and under-reported. Kudos to DiAnn Mills for bringing these boys' true stories to life. This book will make your heart go out to the "lost boys" while you realize how much we take our religious freedom for granted.

From Booklist
Gr. 7-9. This sequel to Mazer's A Boy at War (2002) picks up after Adam, his mother, and his little sister have left Honolulu and moved to Bakersfield, California. Still under the shadow of his father's death at Pearl Harbor, Adam struggles to get his bearings. When his Japanese American friend, Davi, writes from Hawaii to ask Adam to find his father, whom the authorities have taken to California, Adam begins a quest that takes him to an internment camp. Written in first person, the novel chronicles the emotional confusion Adam feels as he looks for the right path and his satisfaction when he finds it. Although reading the previous book is not necessary, the scene in which Adam first sees Davi's father again as well as the many mentions of Adam's father will resonate more powerfully for readers familiar with it. The book ends with a time line of the Pacific war in 1942, a discussion of the home front, and quotes from documents related to the Japanese internment. A satisfying coming-of-age story in a well-documented historical setting. Carolyn Phelan

A Boy No More .......2007-04-17
If you like war or history books pick up A Boy No More. The main character is Adam. Adam's dad was in the attack on Pearl Harbor and is said to have died so Adam goes to find him. He still believes he is alive while everyone else thinks he his dead. A one point in the book, Adam is on the road and out of nowhere a Japanese plane starts to fire at him and the other cars around him. That is just a small part of the book and if you want to find out what happens to Adam you have to read this book. If you like action and nonstop reading, or if you want to find out if Adam's dad is dead or alive read this book. I give it two thumbs up so pick it up and read it!
VIDA'S REVIEW.......2007-04-09
One of the events in the story "Boy no More" tells about a local farm boy from Hawaii and his best friend Davie who is of Japanese decent. The story takes place in the year 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. Davie lives with his dad and grandmother in Maui. Adam lives on the other side of the island in Honolulu. Adam's dad is a leutinent in the Navy onboard the U.S.S. Arizona. His mother works at the Naval factory as a rivitor. Davie's Dad works at a restaurant in downtown Maui. Davie grandmother stays home and takes care of Davie and his Dad.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Davie his dad and his grandmother were
arrested by the local Military Police and taken to a Japanese prisoner
camp. The U. S. Government was suspicious of all Japanese civilians and
they were held at detention camps in Northern California. Davie wrote a letter to Adam from the detention camp asking Adam to bring food and
water and money to help him and his family. Adam did not know how to
begin to find a way to get to Northern California from Hawaii. Adam
develops a plan to go to the detention center by way of San Francisco by pretending to visit his grandfather to help him with his farm. With his
grandfather's help he gets to Northern California and helps Davie's family
with the supplies and money they needed to get them through the war. The
conflict is the feelings that Adam has between his loyalty to his country
and the belief that his friend is being wronged and needs his help. Adam has lost his father in the bombing of Pearl Harbor and he feels that he should believe in what his country is doing to the Japanese Americans. The resolution is that he decides to help his friend because his believes in his friend and knows that he has had nothing to do with the bombing in
Pearl Harbor.

Children can discover a great deal about their parents.......2000-11-10
Mr. Lackner expounds, from a very personal viewpoint, on a life of considerable experience. The patchwork of vignettes makes it challenging to imagine that one man has lived this story. Nevertheless, these tumultuous episodes frame common themes. The author's account begins at his birth in Romania, describing a lost era of extended family and pre-war innocence. We follow the first person narrative through adventures and tribulations during World War II, then in Chile during his developmental years and exploring the nascent dream of coming to the United States. I personally appreciate reading this because I recognize the sources of all the parental advice that a son benefits from. What anybody's children can really gain from reading "Our Family Saga" is that their parents are fascinating people. Before assuming the responsibility of raising their children, they have led amazing existences. I am lucky enough to have a father who rose to his children's challenge of capturing his life on paper and now have the opportunity to understand him, and therefore myself, on a whole new level.
