Book Description

Philippe Starck describes him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Drew Philip calls his buildings "land art" that "struggle to emerge from the earth." He is the only architect to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is the world's greatest living architect. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed in architecture. Ando has designed award-winning private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, as well as in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA. This book, created at the height of Ando's illustrious career, presents his complete works to date.

5 out of 5 stars Sensibility.......2007-02-17

Thanks Taschen, this book is perfect, the size, the case, the cover!!! beautiful picures, plans and text. That is how a archtecture book is done, in years, people will talk about the sensibility in put Ando's work in a book.
The travel begins in the case, with a familiar pattern of Ando's work, the cover, beautifully taken, and the climax of book presentation is the hardcover, with Ando pattern, perect!
Inside, have everything oh Ando's work, the text, the picures and the plans are superb, but the top os te top is the sketches os his works.

Thanks again Taschen..

5 out of 5 stars Awesome photos of Awesome architecture.......2007-01-29

A wonderful, large format, book covering all of Ando's significant work into the early 2000's. It is so interesting to see his early work, how clear a path he set for himself in his career and how carefully he has kept on the path.

4 out of 5 stars ando's huge book.......2007-01-18

the book is amazing... arrived in great condition and amazingly quick... the book was much bigger than what i had in mind though... huge and heavy...

5 out of 5 stars Great monograph for your collection~.......2005-01-29

This is the latest monograph on Tadao Ando and despite its steep price, its sheer size alone can justify its value. Although the title states "complete works," the monograph focuses on select projects from the mid-70's to the present (there is however, a list of his complete works in the back with single b/w photos in an index format). Although many of the projects that are featured here can be found in other Ando monographs, the extra large photographs of his projects reveal a new sense of space to projects that we are already familiar with. In addition, this monograph also features preliminary sketches of projects and some photos that have not been published before. New projects that you won't be able to find in his other monographs include the 4x4 house, Ground Zero Project, etc. A great book to have in your collection and so far, the grandest of all of Ando's publications.

Tadao Ando, one-time truck driver and boxer, is a self-taught Japanese architect whose winning of the 1995 Pritzker Prize has given him preeminence among his gifted generation. Ando reinvents Japan's architectural tradition in contemporary terms, using minimalist concrete structures of monumental scale, reminiscent of the Brutalist architecture of America's Louis Kahn. Editor Francesco Dal Co, an Italian architectural historian, has produced an excellent survey of Ando's career to date, along with a critical assessment of his work.

5 out of 5 stars See my dream in atchitecture.......2005-11-07

I think he's slightly old-fashioned but he's still attractive person. I took part in his lecture in Seoul. He looks vert kind and ordinary old ages. But he always try to find new aspects in buildings.

5 out of 5 stars a very impressive work ...........2005-10-18

i have to call this book a work of art, because it shows Ando's concepts starting from the cover design, then shows us the works of ando which i think are connected with his soul and not just a repetitive themes....

5 out of 5 stars Touching silence.......2002-09-08

Francesco dal Co. give us the best aproach to Tadao Ando work. An architect that focus on the most subtil things that makes a certain space (prototyped space, like he says) sacralized. The perfect control of the light and shadow, the minimalist use of the materials in harmony with the also minimalist use of the forms themself wich, in the most poetic way, express the Japanese filosophy (ZEN thoughts) of continous space - a space both of the contruted and non-construted (natural) life.

Much more aspects of Tadao Ando architecture and life (can we distinguish between the work and life of an artist?) are treated in the best way in this book, wich includes a compilation of his own writings and an antology of the critic on his work. The quality of the paper and photographs are also very good, although architecture can't be experienced trough a simple 2 dimension layout (there is nor the 3rd dimension nor the 4th - time).

Now, it's all about architectural taste...

5 out of 5 stars Genius........2002-08-01

Ando is amazing. Recommended if you like him or just concrete/glass construction.

4 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to Ando's work........2000-05-03

Very comprehensive with a lot of good photographs, although too many of them are monochromatic. To someone who's familiar with Tadao Ando's work it emphasizes important aspects of the architect's work such as the penetration of light and the feeling of his transcendental spaces, but to a "novice" it may be a little bit hard to swallow. The presentation is excellent with some additional information about the sites, time of construction etc. The last part includes instructive articles written by critics and by Ando himself. Tadao Ando's own writings are a must to anyone who loves architecture. A good book on a stupendous architect!

      Book Description

The new edition is basically a complete overhaul of the original, very popular edition. The design process is explored in incremental stages, taking one elemental at a time. Each section offers advice on methods and uses of self-assessment. Book is made up of 3 sections each with topics illustrated with 9-12 specifically- commissioned mini designs to show options, set exercises for reader and then self- critique and professional examples from around the world. Sections are:

Basic design principles (60 pps) teaches ground rules of balance and harmony in design including basic design, typefaces, color

Design decisions (36 pps) looks at areas of design and how each may be analyzed including initial brief & decisions, analysis of copy, analysis of imagery, analysis of results

Design projects and categories (38 pps) showing how the principles have been applied including information design, text & display type, primarily display type

This edition contains updated examples from international designers and design agencies and newly worked examples and projects to meet the needs of a younger generation designing in the new millennium. One added area of particular interest is the Internet, with examples and a project on home page and links design. The book is four-color throughout and has a completely new and modern design that focuses on style, clarity and ease of learning. Exercises have been devised to enable the reader to practice as they learn. Revised by David Dabner with Alan Swann's name still attached as primary author.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, Horrible, Horrible!!!!!!.......2007-01-15

Hear, hear to David M. Chess. Your review was right on the money. In addition to his comments, I was horrified at the minute size and choice of the overall text and captions used to design this book. It's very tedious to read. And....the constant references to rag right (or rag left) that are incorrect show me that the author is not typographically savy.
For all of you beginner designers who have the unfortunate experience of trying to read this book-"rag or ragged right" is just that, ragged on the "right" side of the copy which is also referred to as left aligned, and visa versa. Ragged left=Right aligned.
Also, the concept of including working exercises is a great idea, but... assigning an excercise and showing an "exact" sample of the various results does not encourage the reader to experiment further.
This book is uninspiring to say the least, and will not be taking a position on my graphic design bookshelf any time soon. I'm happy to say that with my college training, I can tell a good design book from a bad design book. Beware!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Bad Book.......2006-10-11

This is a patheticly designed design book by David Dabner that shamefully claims is "based on the best selling edition by Alan Swann" NOT co-authored by Alan Swann as the Amazon listing claims. The original book by the same title, actually written by Alan Swann and was Published by North Light Books in 1987 and paperback 1990 is the bible for understanding graphic design! Nothing short of brilliant! Do NOT buy Dabner's book when you can buy the original by Swann

2 out of 5 stars Less than useful continued... (tip of the hat to David Chess).......2006-08-16

This book disappoints in many ways. There are other books available on the topic of graphic design that are far more helpful, such as Robin Williams' "The Non-Designer's Design Book".

The most logical place to start with a book on graphic design is with an introduction to the elements of design before then speaking of the principles of design. The book's first chapter is titled "Basic Design Principles" and confuses by mixing elements of design with principles of design.

The layout of the book is uninspired. The pink horizontal hairlines on every page do nothing to improve the look of the book but are instead distracting. The one nice thing about this book is that the examples used are generally high quality design.

This book does not deliver good value for money, especially considering the other graphic design books on the market.

2 out of 5 stars Lazy and lacking in explicitness.......2004-05-27

Please read David M. Chess's eloquent review of this poor-quality book. I intuitively felt much of what he was able to say with his obviously greater design education.

4 out of 5 stars Book not for General Designers.......2004-05-03

This book targets all Designers (Designers in Print, Packaging, Web Design...etc), so I would not suggest it if you are looking for a specific book about your choice of field in design. It is also not suitable for designers who knows the basics of design, because it talks a lot about elementary stuff. Generally it is a good, easy to read book with lots of examples and excercises.

          Book Description

As Alan Rosenthal states in the preface to this new edition of his acclaimed resource for filmmakers, Writing, Directing, and Producing Documentary Films and Videos is “a book about storytelling—how to tell great and moving stories about fascinating people, whether they be villains or heroes.”

In response to the technological advances of the last six years and the demands of cable TV stations like Discovery and A&E, Alan Rosenthal reconsiders how one approaches documentary filmmaking in the twenty-first century. Foregoing theory and hardware, Rosenthal tackles the day-to-day problems from initial concept through distribution, emphasizing the research and writing approach.

He offers examples of interviewing, narration writing, and the complexities of editing. Simply and clearly, Rosenthal explains how to write, direct, and produce the documentary, whether film or video. New aspects of this third edition include nonlinear editing techniques, a complex budget example and its analysis, plus a chapter on “Staying Alive,” which details how European and U.S. stations approach documentary and how the Internet can help filmmakers find new markets. A new chapter has been added to address the growing genre of family films.

In starting something new, the potential making missteps that can derail the whole process is always present. This book helps you avoid those and has advice on how you can develop a quality product that people will want to see. Very worthwhile.

          5 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2002-04-27

Even while reading this book I was able to pitch an idea for an event and documentary project, my first, and gain acceptance for the project. The concepts are helpful as well as practical.
I read a lot of books once I am interested in a subject and I would place this one at the top for documentaries.

5 out of 5 stars Sell your kids to buy this book.......2001-09-27

There is little in written text that summarise the worth of this book. I was so moved by its detailed and incisive content and direction that I sold my kids to afford the time and space, the peace required to absorb the rivetting content.
As I sat at my video production terminal I realised that the nirvana of books on docudrama had been produced. This is the sort of book that makes you go and get the authors name tattooed on your butt.
          Buy , buy , buy ..

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS, excellent, excellent, excellent........2001-06-25

This book is a masterful resource for any filmmaker regardless of their expertise.

No one has come close in their summation of the documentary process. It is 2001, the book was released in 1996, it is timeless. The best book on the market, a better book could only be devised by the author.

Four years of preperation in one book. Every student, professional filmmaker, enthusiast should have it. I have even allowed persons/subjects whom I was documenting to read this book. It made the process that much easier. They were extremely thankful. PURCHASE THE BOOK.

"For me, working in documentary implies a commitment that one wants to change the world for the better. That says it all."—Alan Rosenthal

An international documentary filmmaker with more than 60 films to his credit including the Peabody Award winner "Out of the Ashes," Rosenthal has written the first book to address the realities facing a documentary filmmaker. Rather than dealing with theory or hardware, this book tackles the day-to-day problems of the documentary filmmaker from initial concept through distribution. Rosenthal explains in a down-to-earth manner how to approach, create, write, and direct the "new" documentary He emphasizes the research and writing of documentaries, from approach and structure through interviewing, narration writing, and the complexities of editing.

The organization of the book follows the process of making a film. Part 1 discusses ideas, research, and script structure; parts 2 and 3 go over preproduction and production; part 4 explores film editing and narration writing; part 5 discusses distinctive film styles; and the concluding chapter offers a perspective on the entire filmmaking process.

In this, her third volume, Molly Ivins (columnist, NPR commentator, and three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize) sheds light on the "great clouds of obsfucation" that stymie attempts to clearly analyze President Clinton's job performance. Ivins stayed a Clinton supporter after most of her fellow liberals bailed--up until 1996, when Clinton signed the welfare "reform" bill. "My expectations of Democratic politicians exceed my expectations of Republicans by only the smallest of margins," Ivins states ruefully, "but real Democrats don't hurt children. Clinton did." Nevertheless, current Clinton bashing defies logic and she provides a levelheaded analysis of the wave of anti-Clinton sentiment by distinguishing between the usual brew of Republican and Democrat animosity and such phenomena as "the well-financed propaganda machine funded largely by Richard Mellon Scaife of Pittsburgh."

The title flushes out the core concern of the collection. One of the oldest sayings in politics, "You got to dance with them what brung you," points to the reality that special-interest money rules today's politics. For Ivins, the centerpiece of corruption is gold, and such inevitable consequences as the tax burden shifting from corporations to individuals; the widening gap between rich and poor. You've Got to Dance with Them What Brung You, inimitably bold and broad, attacks racism, homophobia, terrorism; offers a terse and dismally delightful excoriation of the "ineffable" Newt Gingrich; reports on political farces at both the state and national levels. It's full of incisive gems that offer insight on some of our national extremes (Timothy McVeigh's obsession with the bizarre and racist book, The Turner Diaries, replete with the bomb recipe that blew up the Murrah Federal Building).

Champion of commonsense and compassion; frank and boldly funny, Molly Ivins has been called by the L.A. Times "H.L. Mencken without the cruelty, Will Rogers with an agenda." Those of us who love Molly Ivins read her for her gutsy, lively, liberal values, and those of us who don't ... should.

                  Book Description

It's been five years since Molly Ivins's last book, which is probably too long a time in the opinion of her many fans. But the intervening years have given the bestselling author and syndicated columnist some of the best raw material a political writer could ask for. The Republicans staged a revolution, Clinton was reelected, welfare "deform" swept the country, and the militia movement came out of the bunker: in short, it's been a banner time for Molly's brand of shoot-from-the-hip commentary and uproarious anecdotes.

You Got to Dance with Them What Brung You brings together a first-class collection of smart, spirited, and fiercely funny writings. From the wild and woolly politics of her native Texas to the waffling in the Oval Office, Molly exposes the fatuous and hypocritical at all levels of public life. Whether she's writing about the 1996 presidential candidates ("Dole contributed perhaps the funniest line of the year with his immortal observation that tobacco is not addictive but that too much milk might be bad for us. The check from the dairy lobby must have been late that week"), conspiracy theorists ("Twenty-five years in the newspaper bidness have given me a fairly strong faith in the proposition that if you haven't read about it in The Daily Disappointment or seen it on the network news, it's probably not true"), or cultural trends ("I saw a restaurant in Seattle that specialized in latte and barbecue. Barbecue and latte. I came home immediately"), Molly  takes on the issues of the day with her trademark good sense and inimitable wit.

"I can think of few causes more important than keeping free voices alive in a world of corporate media," Molly writes. She is one   of those voices and a national treasure; as the Los Angeles Times put it, she is "H. L. Mencken without the cruelty, Will Rogers with an agenda." Whatever your political persuasion, you're bound to agree that Molly Ivins is one of the sharpest and most original commentators on the American scene today.

5 out of 5 stars "Do what?" That says it all in Texas.......2005-09-15

I must admit, right off the bat,I've never heard of Molly Ivins;but I sure know who she is now.I loved this book from beginning to end. What this book is,is a collection of her columns from a Texas newspaper 'The Fort Worth Star-Telegram' during the 1990's.She cut her teeth on journalism working for peanuts on a little Texas leftist paper called 'The Texas Observer'.
She is an avowed left wing liberal and makes no bones about it;and you can't fault anyone for being honest;which more than anything else she is.If you ask me,I would call her down home Texas Redneck. She came from an upper middle class family. Her mother was a lifelong Republican;but as she maintains on page
118 that "there's nothing you can do about being born a liberal-fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed".On page 206,she also talks about a group of people who want Texas to separate,as being "born in a state of high indignation and profound misunderstanding". So it seems that this trait in leftists is inbred;I guess that explains a lot.
When her columns deal with Republicans, she can see no good and when she deals with Democrats she sees no wrong;and even if there is,it's the devility of the conservatives at work.Hey,I'm not faulting her for that, that's where she comes from, and more power to her.At times I get the impression she is a Texas Redneck and strives hard to be a liberal at the same time;not an easy course to sail.
She's at her best in writing about Texas politics and comes up with much better lines when on home turf.If she comes up short sometimes ,it's that liberal trait of believing that politicians and government will look after her and all the ills. This is an approach that always leads to disappointment whether one is left or right wing inclined.
This book was published in 1998,while Clinton was still President and little did she know what disappointments were lying in wait. She was also very surprised that Richards had lost to George W Bush as Governor of Texas. The liberals are great in deluding themselves, and that was just the start of things to come.If someone told her at the time, that GW wound not only win the Governorship of Texas but would go on to win the Presidency--twice;she would have thought them ridiculous.Again, they deluded themselves over Gore and Kerry being unbeatable.Let's not even talk about the Terminator and his Democratic wife in California.
There is no reason to lose any sleep over why things turned out that way.All she has to do is to call Rush and he will explain it to her.But therein lies the problem, she knows what he would tell her,and since she could never believe him, the libs will continue their worn out tactics.
Another thing she had no inclination of when she wrote this book is that something even more prepostrous was in the future.Kinky Friedman is now running for Governor of Texas and he says if elected he will put his friend Willie Nelson in charge of ATF(Alcohol,Tobacco &Firearms).Willie has been pretty opposed to Bush,so that must make him a liberal and Kinky is a Jewish boy from the Village in New York come Cowboy and writer and that sounds kinda liberal as well;so we could be in for some interesting times.Hey,Jessy Ventura,The Terminator---and now the dynamic duo of Kinky and Willie.Buy the way, Kinky tells us the Jews and Cowboys have something in common---"we both wear our hats indoors".He also has a idea of replacing the Star of Texas with the Star of David.
Molly reminds us on page 200:
"Before you accuse me of hopeless parochialism, consider the
one great truth that all Texas liberals grasp in their cradles:Things Can Always Get Worse. In fact, they often do.Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to rejoice now, because these will turn out to be the Good Old Days".
Hey,it ain't over yet.I am going to read another book by Molly published in 2005,"Bushwacked",this should be a humdinger too.And if I'm not mistaken,I think I saw another at the bookstore a couple of days ago.

                  3 out of 5 stars A Change of Pace.......2003-08-07

After reading this authors book on George Jr. - Shrub, I was excited to pick this one up. I figured I was going to get non-stop chapters of defense and support of President Clinton. Unfortuantly what I wanted only covered 50% of the book. The other half of the book covered Texas politics and personal columns on people she admired. The book is just a few years of her columns arranged by topic into sections of the book. This did make it easy for me to skip through the areas I was not interested in.

Overall the book was funny and interesting. I found that when she was writing on national political issues, I tended to be with her step for step. She is not a blind supporter of President Clinton, but takes a more practical approach to her politics. She does not just disagree with all things Republican and agree with all things Democratic. I found that I even liked it when she did give Bill some grief about some of his many missteps. So I really enjoyed half of the book, and given the title was surprised that anything-other then national politics was covered. I just was not that interested in reading about a local Texas Senator working on a road project.

5 out of 5 stars Ivins is liberal -- sensible and factual.......2003-02-10

Molly Ivins is simply a top-notch columnist who documents her opinions with facts that cannot be denied. So, her detractors resort to calling her "liberal" as though that word has the Magical Power to transform sense and reason and humor and documentation into a negative.

The far right, filled with paranoia and mistrust, needs to resort to name calling when they deal with this witty, tough, and very well-informed treasure. Why? She's got the goods on them. (She has been a thorn in Bush's side relentlessly cutting through his misdirection to reveal what he does. And, oh, how that annoys those who want to revive the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities -- that wonderful little gang that brought blacklisting and mud-slinging to the halls of congress.)

Ivins is a patriotic writer -- too in love with her country and its Constitution to sit by quietly while it gets dismantled in the name of "security" by those who use fear as their political cover, and too sharp to allow the politics of destruction to go unpunished.

Thanks to Molly Ivins, there is something to love about Texas after all!

4 out of 5 stars Political Insights with Wit and Texas Charm.......2003-01-02

Whenever I see a Molly Ivans piece on the op-ed page of my morning paper, a warm feeling of anticipation comes over me. So when I came across this collection of her essays at an airport ``bookstore'' before a long trip home, plunking down the $12 was a no-brainer. I wasn't disappointed.

The pieces in this book are full of Texas charm, humor, and just plain common sense, but also the facts that so often go unreported in today's news. Her topics are many, but three that come up often in this collection are media ethics (got that? media ethics debated by a journalist!), hypocrisy (Al D'Amato conduct an ethics investigation?), and her favorite, the U.S. campaign financing system (which she refers to as ``legalized bribery'') and its fundamental effects on our society. ``The truth is that there is no political story more important than campaign financing. It's not just the hottest political story---it's the only story. It's the key to the real source of class warfare in this country.'' Not only are these issues and many others addressed intelligently with an eye toward ferreting out the truth, but they are often a laugh riot!

The introduction to the book was written in January, 1998, just after the Lewinsky scandal broke, and all but one of the pieces were originally published from 1993 to 1997. Some of the events Ivans refers to are thus a bit dated today (early 1999), but her writing still packs a wallop.

Vance Randolph and Gershon Legman are the Johnson and Boswell, Lewis and Clark and Will and Ariel Durant of coarse and vulgar humor as a literary subject. Randolph's Pissing in the Snow is the standard popular introductory work on the subject, just as Legman's two volume masterpiece No Laughing Matter sets the standard for deeper historical, semantic and psychological consideration of dirty jokes. Here, Randolph and Legman do for the dirty song (or vulgar version of a standard song) what those works did for the dirty joke, namely provide an exposition of the funny material along with a discussion of its historical context, how the information was collected and some comparisons with other similar treasures. As the other reviewer in this thread noted, the irony of this as a subject of serious study is entertaining in and of itself. While this book is a bit pricey, I will vouch that it is worth every penny and might be the finest thing to come out of Arkansas in the 1990's.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Songs and Jokes as Folklore and Literature.......2000-06-01

When the Univesity of Arkansas Press published this Vance Randolph classic it almost completely made up for giving us Clinton and that admits a lot. This is another portion of Randolph's work on Ozark mountain folklore and generally follows up on his more popular paperback classic Pissing in the Snow. Without saying anything more, this book, although apparently not intended primarily to amuse, is very, very damn funny. It's expensive but worth every penny. No collection of Dirty Jokes as literature can afford to be without it and it deserves the highest recommendation.

I enjoyed this book so much! The irony of an academic study of something usually ignored drew me to the work, but its bawdy and fascinating content kept me reading all the way to the end. I've heard some of the versions of the hymns and bluegrass songs parodied by the Ozarkians interviewed, but some were totally new and entertaining. Read it and you'll be laughing silently every time you hear the "usual" versions of Casey Jones, Frankie and Johnny, At the Cross, Ida Red, and so many others.

                  Book Description

William Childress has roamed the Ozarks of Missouri, Illinois, and Arkansas for 13 years. His training as a poet—he has published three books of poems—helps him create splendor and grace in a description of a sunset or shape the mood of a rainy autumn day.

Through striking word-pictures of his life, you will meet Chilly’s irascible, lovable stepfather, his three sons, and long-dead members of his family whose lives or deeds touched him and were chronicled. And you will laugh with his neighbors and friends, whose humor helps them through life in a county that has been called “one of the poorest in America.” They are not all saints, nor are the Ozarks heaven—just “paradise with the gate left off.”

For more than a dozen years, William Childress has written of southwestern Missouri in magazines like Reader’s Digest, Sports Afield, McCalls, Country Roads, and Friends (the Chevrolet magazine that has carried his national column since 1979). But his millions of readers know him best through his thrice-weekly column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and through his frequent personal appearances, where he sometimes sings his own songs and plays a mandolin, harmonica, and 12-string guitar.

First read this one in the mid l980s and enjoyed every page and word. This is a loosly attached group of stories, one man's expierences living in the Ozarks of Missouri. Having grown up within a few miles of the setting of this work, I found the author captured the spirit of that wonderful place perfectly. It is a shame that this is considered a "regional work" as the author's wit and observations could quite well fill any setting. If you can get a copy, this is certainly one you will want to add to your library. Recommend this one highly.

I really enjoy this cookbook. It reminds me of a church cookbook where every receipe is submitted by a different person. I find that you can make almost anything out of this cookbook. The poultry and fish section has so many receipes. Everything I have ever made from this cookbook has been a great success. The other nice thing about this is that the ingredients are normal things you can find at any grocery store. Down home cooking at its best.
