Book Description
Until the early years of the twentieth century, horses played an essential role in the agriculture, transport, industry, warfare, and sport of Britain. Their stables were practical shelters, but they were also more than that—in many cases a handsomely appointed stable served as much for the elegant display of horses as for their shelter. This beautiful book, illustrated with over one hundred specially commissioned photographs, focuses attention for the first time on the history, the variety, and the importance of stables in the British Isles.
Leading architectural historian Giles Worsley examines stables from the twelfth century through 1914, with special attention to country house stables—including those at Chatsworth and Kedleston—where the finest examples of stable design are found. Worsley discusses the factors that influenced the architecture of stables, whether owned by noblemen, great brewing companies, or the British army. Fascinating and lucidly written, The British Stable will appeal equally to those with an interest in horses, country houses, architectural history, or the special relationship between horses and the people of Britain.

The British Stable.......2007-01-12
I would have like to have seen photographs of the beautiful west front of the Chatsworth Stable. Also, some of the blueprints did not reproduce well. I think it would have been a more pleasing read if these were clearer. Instead of angles of the rooftops, it would have been nice to see the whole stable.

Customer Reviews:
Not for Beginners But Good for Reference.......2006-06-23
**The following is from the back of the book, I DID NOT write it**
This book is an updated, omnibus edition, bringing together the sevel titles which previously formed The British Horse Society Manual of Stable Management. (The Horse, Care of the Horse, The Horse at Grass, saddlery, specialist Care of the Competition Horse, The Stable Yard, Watering and Feeding).
Essential reading for students taking the British Horse Society examinations - invaluable to amateurs and professionals alike
Compiled by a panel of experts, this book offers career students and horse owners a comprehensive guide to the care and management of horses and ponies.
Previously published as a series of seven books, the new BHS Complete Manual of Stable Management brings together all seven volumes, conveniently providing a single source of reference. This all-in-one volume has been fully revised and updated to bring it into line with current thinking in the horse world.
Filled with reliable information and advice on modern stable management practices, the book provides a sound foundation for Horse Knowledge and Care Stages 1 to 4 and the BHS Stable Manager's Certificate.
Throughout, the emphasis is on the adoption of correct and safe procedures for the welfare of all who come into contact with horses, as well as for the animals themselves.
*******
My Review: I think that this book has a lot of very good information, certainly the most comprehensive guide on the market that I have found on all things "horse care." I do not believe that a beginner or person lacking a good amount of horse world experience would have the best of luck with it though.
This hefty book had excellent text but not enough pictures to illustrate its procedures and advice. As an example, the adjustment of a bridle and use of different bits. A person with experience can read the text and understand what the book is talking about but I honestly think that a beginner would have been completely lost. The book mentions different bits but does not have them illustrated - which I consider essential for them to be able to differentiate in the descriptions.
Needless to restate, it is not a waste of money. This book is cutting-edge in British horse care and does cover much of the dismounted material that is seen in the BHS Horsemastership (Stages) examinations. I can easily picture an experienced horseperson keeping this as a reference and often using it. I also think it would be a good addition to a public library because of the sheer volume of material it contains.
For beginners I would recommend starting with books by Cherry Hill such as her "Horse Handling & Grooming" or "Horse Health Care" books.

The definitive textbook for corporate video writing.......2001-10-27
Using Morley's book and his MS Word formatting templates, I have been able to make a great living the past 12 years writing and producing videos. This is the perfect textbook on the subject: like his scripts, its tightly written, with a strong structure and a wealth of detail where it is needed most, all in an entertaining style. The examples really make sense, the guides on research, treatments, and pitching alone are worth the price. Order the MS Word templates with the book, they are worth it in time and money saved. If you work in an organization without creative writers, and you need a script forged, buy this book and become a god in the office. I love you, man!;-) A great companion to this work is Donna Matrazzo's Corporate Scriptwriting Book, a Step-by-Step Guide.
I like it; I wrote it........1998-06-21
Here are lessons learned from two decades of writing for a living. All of the concepts presented have stood the test of demanding clients and unforgiving deadlines. All of the ideas are supported by examples taken from the several hundred scripts the author has written and sold.
More than a book on writing, this steps you through an entire process for managing clients, organizing research, developing a creative approach, word-smithing the finished script and surviving in the food chain.
Two case studies (sales training and orientation) lend continuity throughout and show how each step of the process works within a real-world context. The appendix includes completed scripts for both case studies, a creative treatment for the orientation case study and a list of research questions. The questions alone have generated many enthusiastic comments from writers who modify and use them as an agenda for client input meetings. These writers credit the questions with saving time and enhancing their professionalism.

Two of the wackiest crossovers in the tortured history of comics -- Nexus Meets Madman and Madman/The Jam -- are now stuffed kicking and screaming into a single package, bursting at the seams with rampaging robots, giant insects, optical illusions, and... well, the Gloved One. A four-alarm rush-hour pileup masterminded by the freshest creative talents in the industry. Boogaloo, baby!
Customer Reviews:
The Literary Equivelant of Pixie Stix.......2000-05-16
This snappy collection of Madman guest appearances in the equally-cultish "Nexus" and "Jam" books makes a pleasant addition for fans and collectors of these respective authors and artists. As an introduction to either Madman, the Jam or the world of Nexus, it can be a little jarring, with only the basics to fill in newcomers. Still, the art is vibrantly alive and the stories zing along like a neighborhood big wheel race. It's not unusual for comics these days to have an attitude about them, but in these stories the feeling is one of pervasive whimsey. Bernie Mierault and Allred have collaborated before (and continue to do so) on the short, "Dr. Robot" and the one issue "Everyman". They share an artist's empathy and enthusiasm for their creation that leaps off the page in the back and forth collaboration of the two heroes. The universe within Mike Barron & Steve Rude's"Nexus" is already so hyper-detailed and complete, the only room left is for Allred to supply Madman with his trademark "ginchy" dialogue. But it's not such a bad thing. Bound together the stories have the effect of an exhibition of classic "Amazing Stories" pulp fiction art crossbred with the eye-popping post-modernism of Roy Lichtenstein. So, if you like what you see here kids, there's worlds of boundless artistic joys to be found in each one of these giants of modern comics own works. Check 'em out!

In this lively book, an American expatriate tries to make a new home in a small Italian city famous for its clannish ways. He succeeds in many ways, but not without plenty of gaffes and cultural misinterpretations--all of which make Michael Rips's memoir that much funnier.
"If you live in Sutri for a hundred years, you won't have a friend; if you live in Sutri for five hundred years, you'll have a friend, but you'll regret it." So runs a proverb from the Tuscan city in which Rips, a sometime attorney and full-time student of the good life, sets his narrative, a place that defies guidebook description and most of the rules of logic. There, a first-class idler in a town where no one is in much of a hurry, he encounters such figures as a diviner who heals sick tractors by touch; a Calabrian outsider who gauges people by the smell of their feet; a chef whose favorite dish is porcupine; and an illiterate postman, plus a bewildering array of secrets and strange encounters that test the innocence of our innocent abroad.
Tinged with the bittersweet, Rips's extraordinary memoir will please Italian and armchair travelers alike. --Gregory McNamee

Customer Reviews:
Zen Italy.......2006-12-31
Michael Rips described himself as a lost soul who has no useful skills and can find no direction in life. This is the author, lawyer and writer Michael Rips, speaking about a character, "Michael Rips," who bears no more relation to the author than the character "Woody Allen" bears to the famous film actor and director.
I was pleased to learn in another review that the town of Sutri actually exists. Although that other reviewer states that this town is perfectly described by Rips, I had my doubts whether there was such a town, or, if there were, it bore about the same relation to Rips "Sutri" that Rips the author bore to his character. In any event, it would not matter, because despite the local color it lends to the book, the place is not in itself of great importance. Quirky people can be found making a life together everywhere, and that is what this book is ultimately about.
The book consists of short chapters composed of shorter vignettes. The first chapter establishes the character "Rips", the setting "Sutri", and the situation that brings Rips and his wife to that town: the author's inability to do anything useful. The character then hangs out in cafes and tries without much success to engage the locals and understand them.
Unlike the authors of Italian Neighbors (Tim Parks) and A Small Place in Italy (Eric Newby), Rips never succeeds in penetrating the town, and his character descriptions of the locals are mere anecdotes describing their incredible eccentircities. As one friend expresses it, the Sutrini are "mad, mad".
But about halfway through the book, this premise sufficiently established, Rips stretches out. The eccentricities are replaced by genuine paradoxes, and each anecdote becomes something of a zen koan. Reflections on these may be highly amusing, but will not yeild to rational understanding.
By the end of the book a convincing world of paradox, a zen world, is established. In creating their town, the Sutrini have relied on collective myths (many not merely mythic but demonstrably false) which over time have affected the being of each of the residents as they strive to fit in and make sense of their lives. In this way the town is more than the sum of its parts, and each resident is less an "individual" than a living "particle" in this larger whole. It is impossible to live in this world as a rational autonomous "individual" or to understand the Sutrini one by one as individuals.
Thus the portrait of the town comes to its own sort of wholeness and completeness, not merely despite the absence of penetrating character studies of the locals, but because of it.
A Nose for Humor by Uriel Dana.......2005-06-19
"The kind of book you want to read out loud to someone.... even the stranger sitting next to you!" Uriel Dana
History, eccentric characters & dry wit synergistically arrange themselves into laugh-out-loud combinations in Pasquale's Nose.
In each chapter Rips demonstrates brilliant observational and storytelling abilities.
By the end of the book, all of these surreal characters began to develop a larger, over-soul quality. They reminded me of cultures like the Aboriginal Australians that perceive realities on more than one level. The stories and the history of this place are not only extremely interesting and funny, but they left me pondering the possibilities for hours.
The place is for real..........2004-09-16
Having read and greatly enjoyed this story, I later found myself at Sutri enroute from Rome to Tuscany. My wife and I stopped to stretch our legs and see the town. It is as described, and so are the people. When Michael's name and/or book were mentioned, most people rolled their eyes (lovingly). This book made a visit to Sutri infinitely more enjoyable, and made it a special place among places on the Via Cassia (SS2).
Nice Stories: Disjointed, Sometimes Funny, Meandering.......2003-05-13
Read the rave reviews and then read the book yourself. Pasquale's Nose is a big disappointment and not tied together well, chapter to chapter. Michael Rips flits from subject to subject, character to character without developing anything enough to make you care and there is a rich seam of stories about the residents and history of Sutri to be told here. The book is unsatisfying and unfinished and attempts to be philisophical at the end with a discussion of Adam and Eve and the question "Where Are You?". Even so, I am glad I read the book because it opened up the village of Sutri, Italy -- and surrounding area -- for my further investigation. It whetted my appetite. I'll give Paquale's Nose that.
Hilarious.......2003-02-07
This book had me laughing out loud. Sparsely written but very much to the point. Rips captures the Italian character precisely.

Book Description
Michael Rips quit his life as a major trial lawyer and went with his wife and new baby to Sutri, a tiny Etruscan village outside of Rome. Once there he headed straight for the local caf and there begins the hilarious journey of Pasquales NoseFelliniesque characters, local folklore and the surprising revelation that this small town mirrors the authors own eccentric family. Pasquales Nose is a journey, a memoir, and a story about finding home in the weirdest place imaginable.
Customer Reviews:
Incomparable!.......2007-08-13
It is like nothing else I've ever read before. I laughed out loud several times. The author obviously has some "issues." We learned very little about his history or his family, and that was frustrating. However, lucky for us that he sought to resolve his existential crisis by writing about a small town in Italy (where? I have a HUGE map of Rome and still can't find it). The characters and situations are so improbable. I wanted to believe I was reading fiction but was assured several times on the book cover and in reviews that it was all true. It got me thinking about the characters in my own multicultural family (including Italians). The book is a short breezy read. I won't remember it forever, but I did enjoy it while it lasted.

I think Rips describes italian people in a very real way...reading this book, my firsi impression was "but what kind of idea do americans have of Italy and Italian people?" but when i finished the book, walking in my town ,Collecchio,in Emilia(north of Italy) I realized how many Mezzadonnas, Vittore, Pasquale ecc.ecc. are living next to me! That's strange but that's nice...very nice...that's ITALY!!!
Pasquale's Nose.......2004-09-10
The subtitle says it all, "Idle days in an Italian Town". In order to get through this, you would have to be very idle, with little to do. The opening to this book by Michael Rips is inviting, and he has good skills, but there is little story for the first 1/2 of the book. The pedantic descriptions of the town becoming boring as you wait for the story, ANY story, to unfold. I wanted a plot of some kind, or perhaps a little character development. If you are looking for a detailed description of Sutri, Italy, this is the book for you. If not, steer clear.
Rich with Stories.......2004-04-25
Michael Rips was a hotel dweller and a cafe sitter. It was the life he preferred. So when Sheila, his girlfriend*, an artist, and the mother of their new daughter, suggested that they move to a small Italian town, he refused. Italian town life was not what he had in mind. It wasn't until his favorite cafe announced their impending closing that he resigned his opposition, packed up his resistance and went reluctantly to Sutri. Thus begins his travelogue, the bizarre, funny and enjoyable Pasquale's Nose.
Once in Sutri, he was pleasantly surprised to find that his life could follow the same course, minus the hotel dwelling. He joined the older men in the cafes morning till evening, expecting to while away the time, and never expecting to become so involved in, and even influenced by, the town of Sutri.
Sometimes cynical, sometimes idealistic, Rips looks to find himself in Sutri. In a way, he did. Rips takes the charms and peculiarities of Sutri, breathes them in and makes them his own. He becomes involved--if not mired--in aspects of Sutri including generations-old arguments about the origin of Pontius Pilate, decades-old rivalries over the best beans, hushed-up secrets of porcupine eaters, and debates about everything from Etruscans to horse meat to reality.
Sheila and their daughter are only briefly mentioned, and exist as only shadowy figures. The reader will know Pasquale, the Guidi's and Vera--even the town square itself with the palazzo built with wine in the mortar-- far more intimately than they will Rips immediate family. I couldn't help but wonder if Rips might have found himself more easily had more time been spent with them than with the Sutrini, but. . . Well, I, too, fell under the Sutrini spell so I can't really blame him.
This is a amiable book, with no definite conclusion, no sense of an ending, just a suspension as if the town (and the reader with it) had gone to bed for the evening. Sutri will resume on the morrow, the book will continue, Rips will continue in this fairy tale/alternate universe/timeless place. It was with deep disappointment I noticed that at the time of publication, Rips was living in a hotel in New York City.
*On the book flaps, Shelia is referred to as his wife. There is no basis for that in the book or in the one line about the author. The cover also mentions that Rips "quit his life as an appellate lawyer" to go to Sutri. That's another bit that has only the jacket to back it. I was puzzled that details that were so unimportant in the book itself would surface in the advertising thereof.
A drudge of a book.......2002-03-09
Oh dear, where to start: there are some interesting stories here and it really is the essence of Italian village life and I really wanted to like this book BUT it is so poorly written that is hard to want to continue very far. Though a small book I had to force myself to finish it. Peter Mayle understands character and Frances Mayes is a poet of place. Alas, Mr Rips needs a creative writing class or two as this book reads more like a series of high school essays than a professional manuscript. A real drudge of a book.
