Book Description

The Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages are among the world's supreme architectural achievements. Hundreds of these great churches were built throughout Europe in a rich variety of styles between c. 1130 and c. 1530, all of them representing an investment of money and effort so immense that it is difficult to find a modern parallel.

Christopher Wilson focuses here on the interaction between design and the requirements of patrons, following the creative processes of architects by reconstructing the problems and opportunities that they faced. He discusses chronology, structural techniques, and stylistic developments and then goes further, seeing the story as a sequence of choices from which new challenges and solutions arose. 221 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars The Gothic Cathedral is comprehesive AND readable!.......2000-02-04

How I ended up being the first to review this book is beyond me. I would've guessed that many a learned architectural scholar would've long since sung the praises of this wonderful book. I, however, am just a layman with a lifelong passion for Gothic cathedral architecture, which started in the Washington National Cathedral and became educated, at least partiallly, in this book.

I consider Wilson's "The Gothic Cathedral", a 'must own' for anyone who has ever felt a yearning to know more about the soaring arches, brilliant glasswork, and impossibly high, vaulted ceilings of these magnificent medieval structures. This book, details the development of this unique form of architectural artistry; beginning with it's modest antecedents in Romanesque architecture and the groin-vaulted churches of Normandy and England and continuing through even the most elaborate and extravagant versions of late-Gothic throughout Europe. Mr. Wilson moves the reader, comfortably and comprehensibly through the chronological development of Gothic architecture, while neatly detailing the differences in coincidental development in several diverse geographic regions. Even I, with no formal architectural education, can now explain most of the finer points of Norman Romanesque, French High Gothic, and the Rayonnant styles of architecture, as well as explaining the odd metamorphisis of the English Decorated style into the very uniquely English, Perpendicular style.

The text is brilliantly cross-referenced with the illustrations, diagrams and photographs, which are both descriptive and beautiful, despite being all black and white. Finally, the glossary, index, and bibliography are complete and very helpful. If you think you MIGHT like this book... you will. Buy it.

I Couldnt even a imagine the effect this book would have on me before i first stumbled upon it. Recommended first by my high school film teacher, my whole preception about framing and especially lighting was changed completely!

Nestor is a Myth, his work is amazing... READ THE BOOK!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cinematography at its best!!!!.......1999-10-19

Nestor Almendros is brilliant in describing his every techniquein regards to achieving the magic like visuals of his films. A greatbook for the film student or the film lover. Alemendros gives interesting insight into the political reasons that took him out of the Island and into the world of exile and Truffaut. But still I'm unable to get a copy of the book!!!!!! One last word.... ViVa Cuba Libre y el buen cine.

5 out of 5 stars In praise of Vertov.......2004-05-09

This is the only professionally written, highly analytic, examination of the greatest documentary film of old times, Dziga Vertov's "The Man With the Movie Camera," which includes a formal analysis of virtually every shot, simultaneously represented with the respective frame enlargement.

5 out of 5 stars Don't just name drop Dziga Vertov!.......2003-08-21

This is an excllent title for degree level students studying film, art or european history. I found this an extremely rewarding analysis of Vertov's work and working practice. Petric writes in a way that is academic but also easily understandable for the lay. Petric does not just an analysis 'The Man With The Movie Camera' he also looks in depth at the political and artistic conditions that gave rise to constructivism.

Film studies students often drop the name; Dziga Vertov without actually knowing anything about the man or his work and this book is an excellent way to learn more.

                        Book Description

Well-drawn black and white manga is already some of the most visually expressive fiction available today. Let's Draw Manga -- Using Color adds a powerful weapon to an aspiring manga artist's arsenal. A graduate of this book may use color to heighten the glitz and dazzle of an onstage performer in lights, capture the gloom and doom of a mad professor's castle, or heighten the tension when a cornered heroine is forced to draw a glistening weapon against a moonlit backdrop.

3 out of 5 stars On the payroll.......2006-11-04

Anyone who has read Stone's account of the Korean War (as I did a few decades ago) cannot be surprised at what is implied--strongly implied--by the Venona transcripts, and that is that Stone was a mouthpiece for Comintern in the US. Everything he wrote in Hidden History is not just wrong, but despicable lies...and Soviet records confirm this. If Stone had been an independently-minded journalist with a different slant, there is no way he could have been so far off on the origins of the Korean War. The only explanation for his take on it was...surprise!...it was the view being promulgated by the Soviets/Chinese/North Koreans.

To call this guy an independent journalist is like calling Rush Limbaugh a socialist. He was, if not a spy, an agent of communism. And if you missed the launches of NK missiles and their nuke test lately, you missed the fruits of Mr. Stone's labor.

                        3 out of 5 stars Hmmm...think of Ezra Pound...........2004-10-29

Iggy Stone was a terrific jounalist, holding the powers that be feet to the fire,as it were.Howevere, his undying Stalinist sympathies and loyalities suggest a blind eye, which discolrs much of what he wrote, for me anyway. Whether or not he was a paid soviet agent[professor Cottrell dismisses this] or not, would we be as tolerant of his leanings if he were a Fascist? Think of Ezra Pound, his vitriolic and poisonous braodcasts, and hgow he has been tarnished.Or Lindbergh. To be preached to on moral responsibility from soemone who ignored the atrocities that were day to day life in the Soviet Union is bizzare,if not wilfully ignorant. We have a responsibility to satnd up for all victims, as Albert Camus said, not to be on the side of the exucutioners. Stone was not, despite all his acumen and style...

                        5 out of 5 stars My Book.......2004-03-28

The review you have unstarred was delivered by me to offer a sampling of positive analyses about Izzy. I gave my own book 5 stars, not 0, as you have indicated.

1 out of 5 stars I.F. Stone: Confirmed Communist Spy and Traitor to America.......2003-07-20

The Venona decrypts of Soviet cable prove beyond any doubt that I.F. Stone was a paid Communist spy. If you don't believe me, read the decrypts yourself (do a search here on "Venona"). He worked to spread propaganda in America for a brutal Soviet regime that killed tens of millions, and he was paid to do it. When he died, his family burned all his private papers to conceal the truth, but ultimately he was exposed by Venona in 1994.

I read this book with morbid fascination at how the liberal media touted this guy as "a Gibraltar of journalistic integrity" and "The most honest reporter in America" even as he worked to destroy our country. It's sad that even today few people are aware of the truth about this evil man who hated our American democratic, free-market values but embraced the monstrous totalitarianism of the Soviets.

                        5 out of 5 stars Cottrell's Stone: Startling Insights.......2001-04-07

Professor Robert Cottrell's biography of I.F. Stone offers startling insights into the complex world of one of the 20th century's most captivating journalists. This book, obviously the result of years of dedicated research, says as much about I.F. Stone as it does about the author Cottrell. Not only does the book depict Stone as a central character in the radical left, but also it places Cottrell as one of our most significant biographers of left-wing intellectuals (also see Cottrell's other biographies about Roger Nash Baldwin, the founder of the ACLU, and Nicholas Comfort). A biography should be assiduously researched and fair-minded, coveying its subject's contributions and conflicts. Cottrell accomplishes this, but the biography goes beyond a factual depiction, in that it also conveys both its author's and its subject's passion for left-leaning ideals. This is a brave work about a brave man.

3 out of 5 stars Must know French..........2006-08-07

This bk was written in 1953. The author uses many French and Moroccan arabic phrases in his writing which makes the experiences & people he encounters feel more authentic but if you aren't familiar with those languages it'd be a frustrating read. Mayne's vignettes are quirky...I never felt as though I got to know him or like him but it was a fairly quick read so I didn't care that much.
There are other books that get to the heart of the Morocco better & deeper with more humor & humanity such as Tahir Shah's "The Caliph's House."

5 out of 5 stars A book that makes me jealous.......2004-08-05

Oh to be able to relocate to an exotic city and write for an occupation! That's what occurs in "A Year in Marrakesh". While other English citizens are touring Morocco, Peter Mayne relocated there, to become a part of the city of Marrakesh and to come to know it. There are many lively characters here, painted with a comprehensive brush that shows them to be, if not real people, than so realistic seeming that you never find yourself saying, "Yeah, right, like you'd actually meet someone like that."

Also, this book give a gentle entry into the mindset of average Muslim people.

This book will not shake your world-view, but it may give you the hankering to pick up stakes and relocate for a year or more. And isn't that what good travel literature is supposed to do?
