5 out of 5 stars Pop up book making instructional.......2007-03-12

This book is great for the beginner. It shows you some basic folds and it is good that you have a regular pop-up book there so that you have the instructions and an example.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2007-01-11

For anyone interested in making pop-ups, this book should be on their work table.
What I especially like about it is, the many simple sketches of the pieces and how they are applied particularly in the more complex figures, where clarity is needed and often times not as well done in other books on the subject. I have bought more than one to give to friends that work in this area as well.
One of the best books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to Pop-Ups.......2007-01-09

This little book is packed full of easy to understand directions and very practical do's and don'ts that only come with experience. If you don't want to waste time making your own mistakes, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Pop Up!: A Manual of Paper Mechanisms.......2006-10-19

Excellent Book! I have a nice collection of pop up books as well as books about their construction. This book is outstanding. The drawings are clear in their explanations and descriptions--much more so than photographs would be. You can see the fronts, backs, sides, edges--whatever is pertinent to understanding the form being illustrated. One especially nice feature is the author's explanation of things to watch out for--potential stumbling blocks to creating a functioning mechanism. He begins with the basics and then demonstrates elaborations. I think his illustrating applications of the forms is inspiring and informative--he goes beyond showing how to make, for example, a pop-up box and uses examples that show what a pop-up box might be. I consider this book a "must have" for those interested in the subject.

Book Description

Corporations, government offices, and academic institutions have long used video to educate and inform. The only thing that's changed is the people who are producing them: With low-priced equipment and easy-to-use software flooding the market, now you're the person behind the camera, not some high-priced video specialist! This is the guide for you, then-and all of the other nonprofessionals who've been called upon to produce top-quality videos. Long on essentials-like where to place the camera, how to connect microphones, and which font to use in titles-and short on theory, this guide focuses instead on the simple steps and best practices needed to produce great videos. Veteran author Jan Ozer gives you the lowdown on shooting, audio, and lighting before describing the workflow and procedures involved in converting raw DV footage to streaming video and DVDs, and distributing the final product. For software-specific guidance, you can purchase downloadable PDF workbooks that use the book's projects to walk you through the production process.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Resource for Educators.......2007-01-09

I had to read this book as part of a multimedia course that I took. The information for me as an IT educator was just what I needed. Jan takes the time to explain things in a level that we all can grasp. His pictures also are extremely helpful in reinforcing the concepts. He also adds humor (self-deprecating at times) which I enjoyed. I can appreciate that after going through a list of codecs. As a fellow college instructor I would love to take one of his face-to-face classes!

5 out of 5 stars DV 101 is Essential.......2005-12-18

This book delivers exactly what it's title states, and does it very efficiently.

Over the years, it's become evident that Jan Ozer is the best source of DV information. He relentlessy becomes an expert in all of the newest features long before the rest of us, and his books provide a wide range of knowledge that even the most novice reader can understand. I highly recommend his entire line of books.

5 out of 5 stars For the non-professional who needs to make a professional video........2005-08-14

I've just read this book and found it to be a great resouce. In the introduction the author wrote that his " ... main aim was to provide a book that would help a complete novice shoot, edit, and output high-quality video ...." Ozer's intended audience is the person who has been given the responisibilty of creating instructional, training and corporate videos and needs to quickly learn how to do it. This is not a book for the person who wants a full time career in video, but rather for the worker who finds that this has been added to his or her job tasks. It may be a HR person who needs to make a video explaining new company policies, a teacher who needs to shoot a lecture, or a salesperson who needs to "interview" an engineer about the latest and greatest widget he's going to sell. While Ozer does not cover shooting weddings, news gathering, or documentaries, the techniques and methods learnt here can be used in making those as well as videos for family and friends.

Ozer makes four basic assumptions about the reader:
* They are working alone.
* They have only one camcorder.
* They are editing digitally.
* They are producing for professional distribution.

The three shooting scenarios covered are:
*Executive Briefing - a single person, facing the camera delivering a message to an audience.
*Interview - asking questions of one person.
*Discussion / Training - asking questions of two or more people who may be interacting with each other.

The first section of the book covers capturing audio and video, and lighting. Realizing that the reader may not have the budget of a major television network, he confines his discussion of these things to finding inexpensive solutions.

His next section covers workflow, editing and converting dv video to streaming video and DVDs. The book is not tied to one specific editing program or operating system. Specific instructions for different editors for each chapter can be downloaed from the author's web site. I found his discussion on choosing codecs for publishing to DVD or the web the best I've read. For once I have a roadmap to follow that I can understand.

Finally he covers distribution by using video in presentations, streaming and using closed captions. For those in education there is a great introduction to creating closed-caption text and why it's different from simply adding sub-titles.

It gives you practical information on such things as shot lists, lighting, audio and how to shoot an interview when you are both the interviewer and camerperson. This is a book about shooting in the field, not in the studio.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This will get you going.......2005-07-08

I'm not a pro videographer -- I got this book to help me take better video at my church, and at home and on some ocassional business videos. I thought I needed separate books on lighting, audio and how to shoot and edit the video itself, but this book tells me what I need to know with screenshots and illustrations that make it easy to understand. The first chapter in particular, "mastering the video shoot" illustrates some common techniques - where to place the camera, where to place the subject in the camera - that have improved my videos immensely. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Hands on Guide for Volunteers too!.......2005-04-21

Libraries need to interview and archive footage from their interesting seniors, scouts need to capture their jamborees, and coaches need to focus on what is going right (and wrong) with their team. The list goes on forever, and all those volunteers out there doing the heavy lifting need to read this book, mark the pages and follow the steps! Jan Orzer's book is really saving me from a lot of errors, steering me in the right direction and giving me the confidence to try. If I follow the directions that he illustrates so well (and humorously) I expect to produce video that teaches, entertains and maybe even inspires the viewer. I have never taken a formal course and am finding my way as an amateur, but so far, with Jan's help, I am getting there with better results than I deserve to have, so this book is very good value, and I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Animation 101 presents an overview of animation past and present from an insider's point of view. Includes materials on breakthrough animators from the amazing Walt Disney to the irreverent Ralph Baksi.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2002-10-15

From the front covers and reviews, I was expecting better. If the editor was such an expert in animation, he should have noticed the blatant errors within many of the works inside.

For example, when they talk about Ralph Bakshi (who is one of my animation idols) they said that "Fritz the Cat" was a low budget animation picture. Wrong! They went over budget in "Fritz the Cat", and in fact when news got out that this X-Rated film was not only animated but on a large budget, it brought more people to the theaters. Another error in the same article was referring to Ralph Bakshi's "Streetfight", aka "Coonskin." It says that it appeared to bash blacks, Italians, and Jews. Jews? Maybe if you count the one rabbi that was on the screen for ten seconds just to tell Sonny he was supposed to kill the rabbit as making fun of Jews...but how can that be making fun of? Did the writer even see the film?

The biggest error in this book, however, was one that made my blood boil. I can't remember what the title of the piece was, but I will never forget the dumbest, most inaccurate words I have ever read:

"...after the release of Hayao Miyazaki's 'Ghost In the Shell,' Disney studios..."

Excuse me? Hayao Miyazaki did "Ghost In the Shell"? I know he did "Princess Mononoke" which caught the attention of the Disney company, but I thought "Ghost In the Shell" was released by Manga...? It was. "Ghost In the Shell was made by Mamoru Oshii, not Hayao Miyazaki.

I wouldn't be surprised if I saw this book accrediting the film "Grave of the Fireflies" to Chuck Jones.

There are better books on animation out there. I suggest the autobiographies of the animators themselves, not the so-called "experts."

3 out of 5 stars Ditto!.......2001-01-25

I suppose it's hardly worth it to write a review when I agree with everything the former reviewer said...but just for those who want a second opinion, he's absolutely right. If you want animation lessons, look elsewhere.

But it's rather interesting to have a look through.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but the title is misleading.......2000-06-26

Ernest Pintoff is a renowned animation teacher and Oscar-winning filmmaker. In this book, however, he doesn't teach the reader how to animate. The book provides a brief history of the animation industry, before presenting 20 short articles by famous animators. These articles make up most of the book. Nearly every article reads like an interview, with the famous animator summarizing his or her career in animation. These articles did give me some insight into the animation industry, but I was a little disappointed and thought the book should have been titled "Animation History 101" or "Interviews With Animation Professionals". The book does provide a list of recommended books and films (with no explanations), a short glossary of terms, and a list of animation schools.

Some exellent books I have read on the subject are "Chuck Amuck" by Chuck Jones and "Talking Animals and Other People" (animation industry), and "Animation From Script To Screen" (animation technique), both by Shamus Calhane.

5 out of 5 stars One Very Neurotic Cat Who Can Stop Whenever He Wants To..........2004-01-30

This is a simply delightful little book about a cat who has a whole bevy of modern psychological issues, and finds relief in the miracles of Prozac, Xanax, Valium, Ambien, and a whole host of other medicinal delights! I was surprised to find that the only disorder this poor kitty didn't suffer from was Attention Deficit Disorder, but given his daily dosage of mood altering substances, I'm betting he'll feel just fine even if ADD is diagnosed in a sequel.

This is a very funny book, and is a quick read. The narrative is funny and crisp, the illustrations are wonderful, and the whole thing serves as a witty parable of the excesses of modern life, and the easy way out so often prescribed by so many Psychiatrists today.

This book includes Sanger's writings on marriage and children, the labor movement, socialism, prison reform, pacifism, eugenics, and sex education. The documents illustrate Sanger's impact on these issues, the development of the struggle between the working class and middle class, and the clash between conservative mores and the freethinking women that have shaped today's society. It features the original articles Nothing and What Every Girl Should Know from The New York Call which sparked the ongoing struggle for women's reproductive freedom.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2004-05-03

An interesting book on early 20th century America that many of the recent immigrants like me are not aware of. It is fascinating and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars All the truth, painful or not.......2004-04-29

First, I'm a Margaret Sanger fan. Her work did as much to ultimately liberate women as did the right to vote and the attempted passage of the ERA. I love this book because Dr. Reed has read every single piece of primary research available on Sanger, and then overlaid it with her own (Reed's) summations and conclusions. It is deeply researched, has the blessings of the Sanger family, and provides a non-biased look at a woman, though changing the world, who still had personal flaws and failings. It's arranged chronologically and also contains short biographies of each soul mentioned in the book, an in-depth section of footnotes, a thorough bibliography, and a complete index. This was not Dr. Reed's disseratation -- but it certainly could have been.

5 out of 5 stars Margaret Sanger continues to inspire.......2004-04-22

A beautifully written, passionate, intimate look at a seminal figure in America's history. While Sanger has been justly honored as an early 20th century feminist icon, her fight to publicize the importance of family planning and legalized birth control have shaped rights and institutions we take for granted today. Miriam Reed has crafted an excellent new resource for anyone interested in learning more about this fascinating woman. Good job!

1 out of 5 stars Sanger's Life NOT in Her Own Words.......2004-03-25

This poorly written book offers more of the words of the author, Miriam Reed, than Sanger's. There is no doubt that Margaret Sanger was and is one of the most unforgettable and fascinating figures in American history, but this book (I don't know how to define it) does not do her justice. Snippets of Sanger's words arescattered throughout undermining the author's intent, the documents are badly introduced and oddly over-interpreted. If the author wanted to write a biography she should have. If readers want to read Sanger's own words, check out her Autobiography. This one just doesn't do it. I, for one, am extremely disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough Sanger.......2004-03-12

This selection of Sanger documents is odd and not made with the best of care. While Reed claims that this is Sanger's "Life in Her Words" there is probably more of Reed than Sanger in the book, if you counted words. Each document is introduced by a lengthy and not all that well written essay, and equal weight (and space) seem to be given to Sanger's views on race and eugenics and her recipes for chicken curry. There is some very sloppy research here as well, with no attribution. Reed's biographical sketches are incomplete and in one case, "Oliver" Johnson instead of "Olive" Johnson, downright embarrassing. The fact that Reed disputes Sanger on the name and gender of her British associate would be laughable if it didn't raise so many questions about her other identifications. Reed claims a Ph.D. on the cover, but I don't think it could be in history.

There is no greater pilgrimage for the die-hard outdoorsperson in the U.S. than hiking the 2,100-mile-long Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Pioneered in the 1920s and '30s by thousands of nature lovers who recognized the importance of setting aside land for outdoor recreation, the trail is one of America's most ambitious and impressive wilderness-preserving achievements. A Journey North is environmentalist Adrienne Hall's candid account of completing the grueling "thru-hike" (the hikers' term for the end-to-end trek), a feat more commonly accomplished by men.

A young woman brimming with idealism and ardor for the outdoors, Hall is nevertheless challenged to her core by the hardships of daily exposure to nature's elements. At the outset she naively imagines the trip as a six-month-long "date" with her boyfriend, Craig; that romantic notion is soon numbed by the duress of hiking 20 or more miles a day. They cheerfully begin their journey on February 15 at Georgia's Springer Mountain, each carrying backpacks overstuffed with provisions they would later abandon. While traversing the trail's 14 states, they battle snow, sleet, rain, mosquitoes, biting flies, and flooding rivers; endure the pains of blisters that can't heal and muscles, joints, and tendons weary from endless trudging; and adapt to a monotonous diet of dehydrated foods, Snickers bars, granola, and peanut butter. They cope with the miseries of stepping into frozen boots in the morning, going unwashed for days, and sleeping in cold, wet sleeping bags. Of course, there are uplifting moments, too, such as meeting fellow thru-hikers--characters named Seldom Seen, Otter, Nudeman, and Yard o'Beef--and "trail angels," folks who nourish and house the bedraggled travelers. Most importantly, there's the transcendent immersion in nature: waking up in the crisp mountain air, the hours of solitude and self-reflection, the sunsets, the satisfaction of subsisting close to the earth.

By the end of A Journey North, Hall has known both suffering and bliss. Her happiness peaks when Craig proposes marriage on Saddleback Mountain as they gaze on their final destination, Mount Katahdin, Maine. Throughout, Hill's narrative is vivid and insightful, ranging from honest acknowledgements of her doubts and fears to expositions on the environmental issues facing the Appalachians (and the world in general) to confessions of growing affection for Craig. While prone to descending into cliché, Hall's acute awareness of nature's endangerment is authentic and inspiring, and her awakening to both her emotional and physical strength as a woman is poignant. This book will be invaluable to anyone considering a journey north, or south, of their own. --Rebecca Wright

      Book Description

"Hiking 2,159 miles from Georgia to Maine was not my idea...I was not a lost youth searching for an identity. I was not retired and looking for a new way to spend my time. I was not sorting through death or divorce. I was not recently fired from a job. The truth is, my boyfriend asked me on a date." So begins the story of one young woman's journey along the legendary Appalachian Trail. What starts as a date turns into the experience of a lifetime as Adrienne Hall faces blinding snowstorms, flooded rivers, and seemingly endless mountaintops. Yet despite the physical and mental hardships, she finds her commitment to her hiking companion and the AT experience growing with every mile. When she emerges from her trip - a million footsteps, countless candy bars, and one engagement proposal later - Adrienne has lived an adventure that few will ever know. Written with warmth, insight, and a keen sense of observation, A Journey North is a personal story about discovering what it means to hike the amazing corridor of wilderness that is the Appalachian Trail.

3 out of 5 stars Nice story, if you skip the preachy sections.......2007-05-04

I enjoyed reading Adrienne Hall's story about thru-hiking the AT, especially because so few women complete such a journey. I began by reading every word she wrote, but about halfway through the book got so depressed at her scientific reality checks about salamanders, wolves, bald mountains, and all the many wild things threatened by human encroachment, pollution, etc., that I began to skip these sections (there's only so much guilt you can feel and continue with your everyday existence) to find out if they made it all the way to Katahdin. Wish there were more details of her current life and how the trail changed her, but it doesn't detract from the story to leave these facts to the imagination. A good read, especially for AT afficionados, but don't expect miracles beyond two people walking 2,135 miles through wilderness without killing each other. Which, in and of itself, is pretty miraculous.

3 out of 5 stars I'm an environmentalist too, but............2007-02-13

I normally greatly enjoy reading accounts of women hiking the Appalachian Trail. Hikers telling their own story don't just tell about the trail, they tell about themselves. Often they have a very unique personality and it is interesting to get to know them. In this case, not so much. The author of this book, Adrienne Hall, is very young, and her interests and personality are those of a self-important high school girl (think Meadow Soprano from the HBO series). She writes very long passages about the environment that are very preachy and sanctimonious. She writes a lot about her boyfriend and what other people should do about the environment, and not so much about how the trail helped her grow as a person. This is one of the very few Appalachian Trail books I have read where I found myself struggling to stick with reading, frequently skipping pages.

3 out of 5 stars For your pleasure from her side..........2006-12-27

(12/27/06) Looking for a book about facts on hiking the trail, then maybe this isn't quite the book for you. However, if you do enjoy reading accounts of experiences during the hike, then this might be a read for you. The story is an account of the author, Adrienne's experience in hiking the trail, as a last minute decision to join her boyfriend.

The story spreads off onto Adrienne's views on some of the ecology of the App. Trail. There are stories of environmental issues woven in to her accounts of her hike with her boyfriend and his dog. The book is her account and is entertaining and at times emotional.

This is certainly not a "best of hikes" recommendation book, or a "how-to" guide, but a wonderfully written account of one's personal reflections of the trail. 3.5 out of 5 stars

update 6/18/07: I have picked this up for the rereading adventure. In my humble opinion, this is one of the best [female] accounts of a hike on the Appalachian Trail.

Adrienne Hall was not a novice backpacker, when starting this Trail. Her first hike was around age 11, but she was not all that thrilled taking the 2100 plus mile hike. She decided to go when her then boyfriend asked her on a "date". Adrienne writes about their hike together and how this turned into a journey of a Woman on the trail.

There are stories about heavy rains, mosquito bites, rivers running over and unexpected snow; most stories center around environmental issues. But throughout the pages, the underlying story of Adrienne's commitment to her hike and her partner show growth with every step.

This book is well written and enjoyable. Ms. Hall's attention to detail derives from the amount of time she spent observing the wild surrounding her during her trip.

2 out of 5 stars Not a story of hiking the AT..........2006-07-17

I have to admit to being disappointed with this book. I expected (and wanted) to read an account of Adrienne Hall's AT thruhike. Instead this book reads more like a collection of essays done for a college course that have the AT as their main theme. As an example, pages and paged were dedicated to the acid rain problem and the extinction of salamanders in the Great Smoky Mountains, and then a paragraph would be dedicated to their actual hike through the same region. Don't get me wrong, the essays seemed very well researched, but that is not what I wanted.

There was very little info on the day-to-day issues that an AT hiker deals with, plus when she did talk about the hike, it was mostly a lot of complaints... too cold, too much rain, too many bugs, and most of all too many people. I got the feeling that she forced herself to do the hike and then after decided that maybe it wasn't so bad. She kept mentioning that she wished she had spent more time on the trail appreciating the hiking life more. For most people, the chance to do a thruhike is a dream come true, for Adrienne it seems to be just something to do because she knows she is stubborn enough to go the whole way. For me, that is the wrong reason and it made the book tough to enjoy.

For a much better account of trail life, I suggest Robert Rubin's "On the Beaten Path" or Kelly Winter's "Walking Home."

3 out of 5 stars Two books in one is problematic.......2005-07-08

I enjoy most books about thru hiking the Appalchian Trail and this was no exception. It held my interest enough to read it through on a six-hour airplane trip without once putting it down. It is better written than many other trail tales and one grows to like the author. However, there is a major problem with Hall's narrative: she can't stick to the subject. This is the reason the book somewhat misses the mark.

When I purchase a hiking book, particularly one about a six-month AT trek, I expect to read about just this: the hiking. Hall commits the egregious sin of weaving in and out of the narrative long-winded treatises on environmental issues. While I agree completely with her liberal philosophy on the environment, I don't want the look littered with this every few pages. It breaks up the rhythm and becomes increasingly frustrating. In one paragraph she'll be describing the verdant forests of New Hampshire and in the next she'll be off on a diatribe against Ronald Reagan. I can only shudder at what Hall would think of the environmental Neaderthal, George W. Bush, but he hadn't entered office yet when this book was penned. One fervently wishes he had never entered office at all...

Adrienne would have been successful had she followed Sergeant Joe Friday's advice and offered "just the facts, Ma'am." Tell the reader about the rigors of trail life, lack of food and sleep, trail angels and bugs. Save the (valuable) environmental advice for another book, or at the very least keep in for an appendix at the conclusion of the book.

Another criticism I have is the constant gushing over fiancee, Craig. She doesn't say whether she ever married this man or not, but the over-the-top mooning over him grated on the nerves. He seemed like a loveable teddy bear of a guy, but enough is enough. Other reviewers have begrudged her supposed "whining," but I didn't notice much of that. If you want to read whining taken to a high art in AT literature, check out Blaney and Ullyart's book "A Journey of Friendship" for the most nauseating, childish complaining known to mortal man. Much of Hall's displeasure could easily have been avoided had she not made the inexplicable decision to begin hiking from Springer Mtn. in early February!! What was she thinking?

I recommend Hall's book, but be forwarned about its tendency to meander and not stick to the subject at hand. Aside from these few criticisms, the book belongs on the shelf of any real or vicarious AT enthusiast.
