Landscape Lighting 101.......2006-04-17
The Landscape Lighting book, by Janet Moyer, provides both an academic and practical level of landscaping lighting knowledge. Another good book, if you can find it, is the Ortho's book of How to Design and Install Outdoor Lighting.
In comparison, the Ortho book has more colorful pictures and offers a very colorful education - I'd say, more or less at a good high school level. If you want more of college level introduction to landscape lighting - perhaps, to start a business or to broaden your knowledge, The Landscape Lighting book is the book for you.
The Art and Craft of Landscape Lighting.......2006-03-08
The second edition of Janet Lennox Moyer's THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is an absolute necessity for everybody who works in landscape lighting or who is seriously interested in creating their own garden lighting. Ms Moyer has greatly revised and expanded the color plates and Chapter 4, "The Design Process - Documenting and Installing Landscape Lighting" as well as writing an entirely new Chapter 5 "Follow-up Work - Record Documents and Project Maintenance." These changes and additions and the many other updates make the new edition well worth the purchase price.
First published in 1992, THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK has served as the single and indispensable reference for the landscape lighting industry. It has offered all new landscape lighting practitioners guidance and provided an emerging industry the foundation necessary on which to build solid practice. While there is a wealth of other books that offer how-to help and publish pretty pictures, none of them even attempt to define and explain professional practice for the landscape lighting industry with Ms Moyer's authority and confidence.
THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is not an easy book to read but it is well worth the effort. Once you understand the theory behind the short cuts and rules-of-thumb that other how to books offer, you are free to create your own. With the freedom you gain when you understand and can apply those fundamental principals and concepts to your landscape lighting, you become like the cook who ignores the printed recipe and creates a masterpiece of culinary art.
expert opinion.......2000-07-13
Still the best book for the professional. Invaluable resource for architects, landscape architects and landscape lighting designers. Broad and deep with plenty of technical information. I purchased this book in 1992 and I bought it again today (an electrician friend "lost" my original copy). A second edition (if planned) should include better information about transformer regulation (the ability of a low voltage lighting transformer to maintain 12v under load) and voltage drop (the dreaded decrease in voltage through the main supply cable) which are presented as formulae rather than actual measurements. Great photographs mostly of large scale projects. This book should be in every outdoor lighting designer's library.
There is a second edition (Wiley 2005) of the book revised and updated by the author to reflect changes and improvements in techniques and equipment. The second edition is easily recognized by the illustrated four color cover; the original had an illustrated dust cover (missing from the last run of the first edition) by the cover itself was plain black.
I have both editions and consider them a bargain in terms of concentrated relevant information.

Beware home owners!.......2004-01-01
If I had been looking for a book on commercial residential lighting,(apartments), this would have been an excellent book. Single home lighting patterns are not included.
expert opinion.......2000-07-30
Read the editorial review thoroughly. This book is about large-scale public lighting such as streets, parks and parking lots. The title misled me but my wife, an architect, commandeered the book for her own reference library. I, of course, was looking for something more like Jan Moyer's "The Landscape Lighting Book".

Vintage Middle America.......2007-09-22
What A Find. Incredibly crisp, clear photographic reproduction that takes you back to a seemingly more simple time in what appears to be the rugged mid-west. These photographs are far from the more professional, technically lighted, studio column props and heavily oiled beefcake models featured years later that made Bruce Bellas famous. This is truly a must have for any fan of vintage male photography.
Beautiful images, beautiful book.......2000-11-01
I returned to my copy of Naked Heartland after reading the negative review here, perplexed. What I found was the same excellent book I remembered -- not just Bruce's extraordinary early photographs, but also the printing and design, are, as far as I'm concerned, splendid. There are some typos, but this hardly seems a grave (or unusual) problem in a photo book from a foreign publisher. The volume is clearly a labor of love, reclaiming and rescuing a lost world of homoerotic experience and images, as well as a thoroughly professional and serious undertaking. This is a gorgeous book that I can give the highest recommendation.
Stunning Pictures.......2000-11-01
This collection of photographs are stunning, I had never heard of the photographer until I chanced on this wonderful collection. That they were taken in the 50's makes the erotica much more subtle but beautiful. I could spend hours staring at these amazing pictures.
Dishonoring Bruce of LA.......2000-10-17
Customers who buy Naked Heartland-and the vast majority will be either gay men, photographers, or sociologists-will experience both the pleasure of a formerly hidden slice of American History and the supreme disappointment of a, theoretically at least, "coffee-table" hardcover book whose quality is the worst I've ever seen. Bruce Bellas' studio work of the 50s and 60s is deservedly famous; it's arguable that the elegance and perfection of his images and prints equals those of any American photographer past or present. That he flourished in the tawdry, hidden world of so-called "physique photos" does not denigrate his achievement nor diminish the beauty of his work today. This book is from private collections of very early Bruce, before his studio was set up in L.A. The images are stunning, informal, and far more erotic than one would think-people really did have sex before the fig leaves fell in the mid-60s! However, this is a book from a publisher who apparently has never heard of graphic design, art direction, or typography. It is the ugliest book-for $50-that I have ever seen. The English text is filled with unbelievable typos, apparently introduced during production. A competent proofreader could have fixed this up in less than an hour. Worse, about 10% of the photos are filled with vertical stripes-artifacts that indicate either a dime-store scanner and/or complete incompetence in terms of production. The printing-barely adequate, with a single black ink, is subpar. And the type looks like Mac 1984 desktop publishing. It's absolutely awful. So, although I would rate the content 5 stars, I wouldn't even give the book itself-the product-a single star. Bruce of L.A. deserves much better-such as the earlier Bruno Gmünder collection-and the greatest tragedy is that this material fell into the hands of people who know nothing about art, or at least book design. (By the way, I was an art director for 30 years before retiring and have designed many books.) This hideous book is probably all we will ever get of this material, and more's the pity.
Hidden Gems from a Homophobic Past.......2000-04-08
Finally there comes a book that does justice to Bruce of LA's work. It is merely a start: the photos in this collection deal with Bruce's early efforts at photographing the male nude, miles removed from his signature pieces of oiled-and-pumped bodybuilders in the 1950s and 1960s, and miles away from California. There is a definite charm to these images, a naivete that is preferable in many ways to the later works. Most of them feature ordinary men in humble, prosaic settings that evoke the works of Walker Evans and other itinerant photographers of middle America in the 1940s. The images reveal a charming aspect of that world with their dingy, apple-pie interiors that one only finds nowadays in early TV reruns and on the American Movie Classics channel. The male nudes planted in these settings hint at a subtle truth about men of the time and about American life generally. What's more they pose intriguing questions about the circumstances behind the images. One is tempted to piece together narratives, for in an age before Elvis and Rock in which male bodies were covered most of the time, one can't help but wonder how it was possible for Bruce to capture so many men in such uncompromising and revealing poses? That we're only discovering them now implies several possibilies: that there was an agreement that the photos would remain uncirculated; that Bruce himself considered them early works and therefore not worthy of reproduction; that legal restrictions about male frontal nudity precluded the possibility until the 1960s, at which time they were already dated; or perhaps all of the above. We can only be thankful that we have this book to round out the current image of Bruce as a photographer of slick hardbodies. These photos shock doubly in that they expose both the softer side of Bruce and a more hard-core side of middle-American life in the mid-twentieth century.

Neither Naked nor the Truth, But Hilarious.......2004-02-02
I love the comedies that Leslie Nielsen has made over the years including the Airplane! series and The Naked Gun series. When I saw a copy of this book at a used bookstore, it attracted my interest. I thought it was an actual biography until I started reading through it.
Nielsen writes a fictitious acount of his career in The Naked Truth, and the result in very funny book. The story sees him narrowly missing out on the legendary roles in Hollywood or finding some other way to escape notoriety. For example, his story of being in Lawrence of Arabia as Lawrence's lover is laugh out loud funny. His reason for not actually being in the film is because the scene ended up on the editing room floor. There are numerous movie stories like this throughout the book. Nielsen also discusses his influence on other entertainers including Elvis and James Dean. The tall tales don't stop at his love life, as Nielsen discusses all of his wives and lovers.
There are plenty of puns, wise cracks, and one-liners as we have come to expect from Nielsen in this book. I completely enjoyed reading this book. Despite the fact that this book is over ten years old, it is still a treasure for fans of Nielsen.

Naked New York
ASIN: 0393318745 |
Book Description
In this unique and startling collection of portraits following Naked New York, we see the "beautiful people" of Los Angeles first clothed, then completely naked. The people of Los Angeles are men and women of all shapes, ages, colors, and professions living in a city famed for its Hollywood glamour and perpetual summer. Photographed outdoors we see a magician, screenwriter, trapeze artist, unemployed surfer, filmmaker, casting director, aerospace engineer, and many more. This serious and, at the same time, amusing group of portraits shows the surprising differences and not so surprising similarities we have to one another clothed and unclothed. Unlike traditional nude photography, these portraits don't have erotic or sexual overtones; they are simply real people who reveal both their clothed public selves and their naked private selves. Greg Friedler's work as a documentary photographer is a kind of anthropological survey of people. If clothing is a voluntary choice, unclothed we see people in an involuntary state-we see their bodies as we see their faces, unmasked. These images are at once deeply intimate and refreshingly matter of fact.
Customer Reviews:
NAKED IS NATURAL.......2003-01-09
Besides what may be its voyeur value for some, "NAKED LOS ANGELES" also shows what it is to be real and unvarnished. The naked self that many of us see in the morning before we dress for the day, though many of us are at times loathe to embrace and accept it. Friedler, through this book, shows us people who are brave and honest enough to throw off pretense and bare themselves unabashedly. Well done! Take heart when reading this book and be proud of your naked self, too.
Very interesting.......2002-04-13
A lot of people would think this is quite a boring book, but I found it fascinating to see how much clothing changes someone's appearance. It just reinforces the idea that we're all naked under our clothes.
Novel Idea.......2002-01-18
Grab this book while you can. The NAKED LONDON book is out of print already.
Great look into human beings.......1998-11-06
Both Naked NY and Naked LA are wonderful human studies and are highly recommended. The contrast between the New Yorkers and Anglinos is facinating.
What does the girl next door look like with her clothes off?.......1998-10-27
This book taps into the deepest part of human curiosity, namely what does everybody around you look like with their clothes off. It's like ordering the x-ray glasses from the back of the comic book and having them really work! When I got this book I sat for hours with a couple of friends fighting over which page to look at, making comments on this photo or that one, engaged in discussions of whether tattooed people where more likely to want to take their clothes off, etc. It is a very honest and straightforward look at people's most intimate side and very well shot. Definitely worth buying.

Book Description
'Beating about the Bush' is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 'Barefoot Over The Serengeti', the tale of a young boy's life with the Masai, on the predator-rich plains of, what is now, the most famous game park on Earth. This book charts the life of David Read from the period of 1936 to 1952 in the colony of Tanganyika (modern day Tanzania), as he comes to grips with his first schooling, his move to the Lupa Goldfields and the onset of adult life. Caught up in the War he marches his regiment of Masai and Samburu warriors from Eritrea to Kenya before leading them via Madagascar to the jungles of India and Burma. After demobilisation he becomes a vetinary officer, and it is here that his childhood experience comes into its own, as he roams the African bush, gazetting East Africa's game parks, investigating ritual tribal murder and learning about the reclusive hunter-gatherer Ndorobo people.

A must if you want to understand the Australian outback........1998-02-11
Len Beadell is regarded as Australia's last true explorer. His exploits in building over 6000kms of roads (such as the Gunbarrel Highway) through outback Australia in the 50s and 60s are legendary. This book is about building a road west of Alice Springs, near the Gibson Desert. It includes an account of Australia's longest towing exercise: a bulldozer towing a grader for 800kms at 3kph! A challenge to all who are leading a soft life!

Great -- if you live in South Africa!.......1999-07-11
This is a clever witty introduction to birding, with some good advice on binoculars, telescopes, etc. The main drawback for most people will be that it focuses exclusively on Southern Africa. Newman has written the definitive field guide to South African birds, and Beating About the Bush is keyed to that guide. More than half the book is devoted to particular identification problems in South African birds, and a large part of the first section deescribes what kinds of birds to look for in various South African habitats. While there are tips which can be useful to any birder -- beginner or otherwise -- and while the cartoons by "Dr. Jack" are delightful, birders who plan on doing their looking outside South Africa might be well advised to get a different introduction to birding.
